Javaans Eetcafe Groningen in Centrum

This was my first time eating Indonesian food, and I loved both the food and the drinks! I was especially pleased with the good vegetarian options! :)

Great food! We had the rice table for 4. Food was well seasoned and there was a good mix of spicy and non spicy options. The waitresses served with a smile. Would visit again!

Unfortunately, it's only open until 9 p.m. today and tomorrow (contrary to what the website says). It's a shame, but luckily it led us to another wonderful place.

After a pleasant day in Groningen, we wanted to end the day with a delicious meal, but unfortunately, that turned out to be a disappointment. For €27.50 per person, we received a "65+ rijsttafel" (rice table) that looked more like a Chinese takeaway than a Javanese restaurant. Frozen green beans, pre-boiled eggs, and a portion of rice barely enough for a two-year-old. We feel utterly ripped off. For this price, we expected a table of fresh dishes, but instead we got the culinary equivalent of an empty doggy bag. In short: a nice day in Groningen, but this dinner was the anticlimax. Next time, we'll have a croquette sandwich at the train station; at least that's filling.

The worst rijsttafel ever for 32 euros per person. The vegetables (corn and beans) were soggy like out of a frozen bag. A bowl chicken mush was tasteless. The peanut soup was too greasy like a diluted satay sauce. The chicken soup was tasteless. The 3 rices were of poor quality, mushy and bland. The 2 chicken satay sticks were alright but flavorless. The fruit salad was out of a can with a sweet syrupy sauce. I wish I could give this meal 0 stars.

We had a Javanese rice table for three people, and the flavors and quality were good. But the portions were far too small. The salad bowl for three people was truly ridiculous, a tiny mini bowl. The concept is that you can order more (except for the satay), and you get a small bowl that's just enough for one person. A table for two got the same amount in the same-sized bowls. We also ate at the old location a few years ago. It was good then, but now it's a letdown. The staff wasn't interested in your experience; everything was perfunctory. We definitely won't be back.

Too bad there was a piece of plastic in my soup! I wasn't happy about it at all! And the kitchen didn't look very fresh, unfortunately! It could be so much better!

We had a delicious meal and ordered a rijsttafel (rice table). There were three of us, but it wasn't enough, and we left feeling hungry.

Recently enjoyed the Rijsttafel Deluxe, and what a fantastic experience it was! All dishes were carefully prepared and beautifully presented. The flavors were rich and authentic, from the spicy rendang to the tender satay, everything perfectly seasoned and wonderfully fresh.

Few vegetables, a lot of fuss (all kinds of very small containers with dishes), the flavors were reasonable but ultimately much too expensive for an unhealthy meal.

The price of the luxury Javanese rice table at 38 euros per person is way too high, for the same money I can go to the Toko and pick up food for 4 people. And then I still have much more food than we got from you and a better quality. And then I hear you think but that is not the same but that I do how the customers think!

Javaans Eetcafe serveert authentieke Indonesische gerechten. Voor de doorgewinterde kenner van de Indonesische keuken misschien niet heel spannend maar voor degenen die nog niet bekend zijn met de smaken uit de Gordel van Smaragd is dit eetcafe een uitstekende kennismaking. Enig minpuntje: de rockmuziek tijdens ons bezoek deed afbreuk aan de sfeer. Buiten eten direct aan de weg is ook niet echt sfeervol

Had dinner at De Javaan this Wednesday, May 7. It was delicious again and a surprise what we got to eat. And what a beautiful restaurant you have now and what a beautiful space you have now. We'll definitely come again.

The taste is fine but not authentic, relatively little food and a high price. You can order some dishes but there was no one to ask.

We had a very nice meal here and a nice evening. The rice table is definitely recommended. There were many different dishes, so something for everyone, and it all tasted very good. This is a great place for a pleasant evening. The tasting for dessert was also a good choice and a nice, tasty ending. What made the evening extra pleasant was the staff. They were friendly, took the time to properly introduce the dishes and provided the necessary service. That was appreciated. All in all a great experience and definitely recommended. We would love to come back again!

Yesterday we had dinner with our team at this cozy café! Javanese rice table: highly recommended😁 food was delicious! Atmosphere was good too!

Disappointing experience. Firstly, it was very cold in the restaurant, so I sat at the table with my coat on for half an hour. The food was then served ala tapas in small bowls, a nice idea in itself, but this meant that the food cooled down very quickly. Finally, I saw the chefs walk through the restaurant 7 times (a period of 1.5 hours) to smoke at the entrance. Not very representative... and also not a very tasty idea regarding the preparation of the food. So yeah, I won't be going here again anytime soon

Air conditioning was not set properly so it was cold. Food was a bit bland in taste. Frozen beans? Little taste, watery.

The food was very tasty. Good taste and really more than enough. The option to order from the rice table is a great way to keep all guests at the table satisfied. The service is friendly and the atmosphere pleasant. We will definitely come back.

We had a delicious meal here (for the first time). The extensive rice table was excellent, delicious dishes with nice and friendly service with explanations. The grand dessert was also delicious. Very fun and delicious to taste the specific Javanese dishes! We will definitely come back.

Has more street food quality then authentic kitchen and that’s ok because it’s catered to the tastes of the Dutch.

Typisch Indonesisch restaurant met een leuke kleine kaart. De nasi rames was erg lekkeren een lekker bord vol. De bediening was attent en vriendelijk, de prijs gemiddeld.

Wir freuten uns darauf, hier essen zu können, aber als wir um 20:30 Uhr ankamen, wurde uns gesagt, dass nichts mehr da sei. Es waren offensichtlich noch viele Tische frei – bedeutet das, dass an einem Samstagabend alle Speisen ausverkauft waren? Sehr enttäuschend.

The food was of excellent quality. However, the portions were far too small, especially for the money you pay. We ordered the Javanese rice table for 5 people. We barely got more than the couple in front of us who had ordered a rice table for 2. Really not enough meat, vegetables and rice for 5 people. We raised this with the waiter, but he only said that we could have asked for more rice and vegetables. Afterwards we went to a kebab shop to end the evening with a full stomach. Can't recommend this tent…

¡Encantador lugar! Gran personal, comida de súper buen gusto y un buen ambiente. Elección más que suficiente en el menú. Si desea obtener más arroz o extra es su más que bienvenido a pedir como se indica en el menú. La nueva ubicación tiene un ambiente diferente al anterior, pero el personal y la comida hacen que realmente valga la pena 😍😍 Definitivamente vale la pena una visita!

Nice restaurant with many authentic Indonesian dishes. Food tasted very tasty and the cafe is nicely decorated. Service was also good, very friendly. It was a bit cold in the restaurant itself and I think the atmosphere comes into its own more at the weekend when it is a bit busier.

We had dinner here on Boxing Day. We had a choice of a special Christmas menu or dishes from the “normal” menu. We opted for the Christmas menu. This contained many different tasty dishes. It was delicious, sometimes you have dishes that are predominant with certain herbs such as lemongrass or the like, but that is absolutely NOT the case here. We were two adults with children, the room looked cozy and the food was on the table in no time. I would definitely eat here again. PS: I really liked the homemade sambal. I don't like spicy, but this one was really tasty and not too spicy! 🌶️
