Ukiyo - Japanese Cuisine in Binnenstad

We thought we were spoiled for choice with good sushi restaurants in Amsterdam, Ukiyo can compete with the best. Delicious dishes and excellent sushi, everything fresh and prepared with attention. A bit far, but we will definitely drive back there especially for it. This makes a weekend in Middelburg something to look forward to. Thank you for a beautiful evening, also because of the service and hospitality. It's a shame that you are closing, perhaps to open a branch in the Randstad?

I ordered the duck breast, it was painfully average, cold, and tasted even a bit stale. There wasn't even a complimentary rice or anything, just two slices of aubergine and some jam. Aubergine was burnt and dry. Jam was good.

Such a full flavorful experience! Ukiyo's fav sushi mix, chicken gyoza, harumaki, ebi ipin, mochi mix and lastly one of the very best double (japanese) espresso I've ever had! Service was stellar as well. PS: Mr Daniel, the owner, was super helpful and friendly, with a great personality to top everything off! 5/5 - Amazing!

We just stepped outside this restaurant!... now the thing is, hold on tight! We (two adults and two kids) sat down at our table at 6:30. We ordered a mix of sushi and sashimi almost immediately, along with some loose sushi. The sashimi would take about 45 minutes. Okay, that's okay...but we were supposed to get it for dessert😱. Furthermore, we ordered the sushi without cucumber and asparagus. The loose sushi arrived fairly quickly; they were excellent and very tasty. Then, after over an hour, the sushi platter arrived, and it contained several rolls filled with cucumber. So we sent it back...we waited another hour for the new one. Unbelievable. I called the manager and explained that this wasn't right. He didn't seem to mind that we wouldn't be coming back because of this...sorry...what?? I told him I thought this reaction was really wrong. I don't think you want guests leaving with a bad feeling. I think that's how it should be, no matter what; guests should leave feeling good. The manager also excused the busyness of online orders... I don't know, but you're a RESTAURANT first and foremost, where you deal directly with your guests. The fun was gone for us, and unfortunately, so was the taste. It took too long. It's just 8:30 now, and we just paid a lot of money with one roll too many on the bill. It's truly incomprehensible. We won't be back, but hey, the manager didn't mind.

Sushi can only be ordered per 6 or 8 of the same. The only mix offering has a waiting time of 45 minutes. No alcoholic drinks.

The dishes are a bit pricey, but the quality is excellent! I was able to try new Japanese snacks so I can't complain about the choice. The service is friendly and they were polite enough to improvise a table because we had not made a reservation and they were actually full.... if I am in the area again, I would easily walk in here again....

It was good and cozy, and very clean and tidy. It's not exactly cheap, but it was tasty. And that's what it's all about. Everything is expensive these days.

The food was excellent. (Sushi variations). We were surprised with a greeting from the kitchen. Super nice and courteous service. Everything perfect.

You will read about the Ramen soup in several reviews. It started well (although it is quite expensive because you have to pay for everything separately). Unfortunately things went wrong at the Ramen. There are only 4 small pieces of meat in it and we didn't think the soup tasted good. There's no real taste to it. If you report this to the service, nothing will be done about it! We didn't eat the soup and the Ramen soup cost 19 euros. Really a shame!

We didn't booked a table but we are lucky enough to get a table for two. Loved the ambiance in the restaurant. We got a portion of deep fried calamari and we got a platter of maki sushi. The sushi was very good, nice portion of fresh fish as well. As for the main we got fried rice and a bowl of ramen. The ramen was a bit salty but everything else was fine. And last best: for dessert we got the pistachio lovers which personally was the best course.

We had a delicious meal at Ukiyo. We hesitated for a while before coming here because we thought it would be pricey. That wasn't too bad: we paid just under €100 for 2 people. Why do I think that's not too bad? Because you spend about the same at the average sushi “all you can eat food bar”. However, this is really a big difference (and not a huge difference). The food was delicious, fresh and prepared with care. Only the beef sticks were disappointing, they were a bit tough. But we will definitely come back more often :-)

We had heard good stories, so expectations were high. Unfortunately, we had a disappointing experience. We had vegetable tempura which was oily, some vegetables undercooked. The gyoza itself was tasty, but fried very briefly. Our ramen barely had any flavor. The ramen had very salty pieces of mushrooms and sour pickle in it. The noodles were cut short so that we couldn't get them out of our bowls with either chopsticks or a spoon. The service was attentive and friendly, yes.

Never had such a culinary experience when eating sushi. The varying selection was delicious and the staff was extremely nice. We are not from the Middelburg area, but we will definitely come back! Thank you Ukiyo.

An evening at Ukiyo – a culinary experience! Last Sunday, January 5, we had dinner at the Japanese restaurant Ukiyo. What a wonderful experience! We chose the menu and shared a sushi roll with the four of us beforehand. One sushi each, perfect to start with. The evening started with an amuse, and what an appetizer! A snack full of different flavors, really surprisingly tasty. We also got a Basil Smash, a non-alcoholic cocktail that was insanely good. Later I ordered another one, so tasty! The amuse was a little extra on the house, and every guest receives this. The sushi we ordered came next. The rice was still lukewarm, as it should be. It couldn't be fresher. The sushi itself was delicious, rich in flavor and perfectly prepared. Starters that impress The starters were served one after the other, which I really liked. This way you could eat everything while it was still warm. It started with a miso soup, which – as someone who normally doesn't like miso soup – I found surprisingly tasty. Then we got a caramelized scallop. This was definitely a highlight! What a great taste and prepared with so much love and passion. There was only one, but I could have easily eaten a whole plate of this. The last starter was a salmon tartare with a crispy crust. Really tasty and generously filled. The combination of soft, very fresh salmon with the crispy was great. Moreover, we even received two pieces of this. One would have been enough, but you won't hear me complaining! Main courses: salmon or steak As a main course I chose the salmon fillet with rice, vegetables and a slightly sweet teriyaki sauce. The salmon was delicious and cooked just right. What I really liked was that there were plenty of vegetables. At many restaurants this will have to wait and see... A little tip: the vegetables floated a bit in the teriyaki sauce. For me that would have been less desirable. It might be an idea to serve the sauce separately or add less, with the option to ask for more separately. I just ate it, because it wasn't that bad. My husband had the Black Angus steak with sweet potato fries and truffle mayonnaise. The steak was delicious and the fries were nicely served in a small frying basket. A really beautiful dish. Desserts and a small adjustment For dessert there had been a small problem with purchasing, which meant that one option was not available. Fortunately, there was an alternative that also sounded very good. I chose a lemon pastry, and that made me very happy! The combination of sour and sweet was perfect. The red fruit on the plate was covered in a bit of chocolate mousse, probably to prevent it from sliding off the plate. I personally didn't like the combination with the lemon pastry, because I find milk chocolate just too sweet. This is of course a matter of taste; I prefer pure. The atmosphere and service The restaurant is not very large, which creates a nice, quiet atmosphere. It wasn't busy that evening, so there was no noise around us. The tables were beautiful, with unique patterns that really stood out. The atmosphere was luxurious, but not too over the top. The staff were friendly and polite. One of the ladies spoke English instead of Dutch, but that was no problem at all. The other lady took our orders with a lot of patience, even when not everyone knew what they wanted to order. She could even tell us exactly what was in the Basil Smash – a real catering highlight! Conclusion Ukiyo is recommended for those who enjoy refined food, a beautiful atmosphere and excellent service. We really enjoyed it and will definitely come back!

We went here for the second time, and the only thing we regretted was waiting so long to go again! A year's difference and the food was once again prepared with the same quality and love. Some people sometimes get emotional about food, I don't get that easily, but with Ukiyo I do. A very warm and nice feeling. This is also due to how the service knows exactly when to ask you if you need anything, and they walk very quietly, not in a hurry, so you can easily speak to them yourself. In addition, we were able to have conversations in a normal tone very nicely, the atmosphere is somehow built up in such a way that everyone talks quietly and so there is not too much reverberation or screaming. The dishes not only look beautiful, every part of the dish really matters, and you can taste it separately, but it also contributes to the whole. It all goes very well with the sauces served, and with ginger, wasabi or soy sauce. It is beautifully balanced, with not a single bite did I feel like I was getting too much of anything. For example, you can easily add too much garlic to a dumpling, so it is measured perfectly here. We shared 11 dishes together, and then each had a dessert. You can also get by with 10 or 9 dishes, it just depends on which one you order. The dishes at the back of the menu are somewhat larger, and I think there is also a combination for people who cannot choose between the individual dishes.

We went to Ukiyo for a dinner with 5. The service was helpful and very friendly. The food is absolutely of a very high quality; we enjoyed a variety of sushi, tempura and greens, and all was prepared to high standards and presented nicely. You will need to take two things into account: many of the menu items are prepared to order so it may take a while, and you will have to be ready to pay a fair price for a high quality meal with fresh ingredients. If this is OK for you, you’re in for a treat at Ukiyo!

Very atmospheric, good service and the food was better than expected. Never heard of this culinary tent before, after an evening of complete enjoyment I would do it again in a heartbeat. Very customer friendly and value for money.

The food is really tasty, as is the service and atmosphere. For some it may be a shame that alcohol is not served. I certainly don't think that's a negative. It has a beautiful decoration. But when I weigh everything up against each other, I think the price is a bit too high. That's the first impression. But don't listen to me because experiencing it yourself says more than 1000 words.

Have had a great meal/delivery a few times. It is a bit more expensive, but you really get quality in return. A small point for improvement: delivery may take a little longer than agreed.

What an asset to Middelburg! And what an asset for people living in Vlissingen. We were firmly convinced that we had to travel at least to Antwerp for the "Japanese Cuisine". But.... the quality of this restaurant makes that hour of travel completely unnecessary. Rarely have you had such delicious Japanese food. And that too in an exceptionally pleasant ambiance. Not recommended but a must!

What a wonderful experience. The food is fantastic. The dishes are freshly prepared and you can taste it. Because you always order individual dishes, you can decide how much you want it to cost. The non-alcoholic drinks/mocktails are great and match the dishes perfectly. The service is super friendly. One of the best restaurants I have ever eaten at. The food was so delicious that I forgot to take pictures of the beautifully arranged bowls of Sushi.

Quite nicely furnished and tastefully decorated. So that it takes almost 5 minutes. Having to wait until the employee standing 2m away was comfortable enough to stop sorting chopsticks to assign us a table, the visit didn't start out so well. The map shows very quickly that you think it is a high class restaurant, at least in terms of the description and prices. The food was quite ok. but unfortunately not a bit better than the sushi stand in the supermarket, but three times as expensive and only half the size. E.g. Ukiyo Favorit, one of the dragon rolls advertised with big words as a specialty, particularly spectacularly prepared with a fantastic combination of flavors and textures, for 11€ consisted of 4 pieces. 1.5cm wide rolls with a diameter of approx. 4cm filled with a total of a slightly dry tempura shrimp which was rolled up together with a 5mm wide and 2mm thick strip of mango and topped with a surprisingly thinly sliced ​​salmon strip. No trace of garnish or decoration, let alone any special arrangement. 6 pieces of 2cm thick avocado maki for €8.50 is almost extortionate. Drink prices are similarly high. NOTHING here justifies the pricing, neither the quality of the food nor the service or anything else. So after we already had €65 on the bill for 4 appetizers and drinks, we decided to have our main course in the form of Kibbeling at the next fry up. Anyone who can and wants to budget a good €100 per person with drinks for, unfortunately only average, sushi is in good hands here. If you don't want that, you should go for the larger and unfortunately sometimes better supermarket sushi. All in all, a pretty sad experience.

Friendly staff. A window was boarded up due to glass damage? The Ukiyo Mix could not be ordered due to staff shortages, we were informed. The appetizer was ok, as were the Gyoza, the oysters Ukiyo and the Ebi Ipin. The Ramen was a total letdown and completely detracted from the cuisine. A tasteless hot water with a dash of soy sauce as stock? An abundance of tasteless noodles, a tough egg, one bok choy leaf and a few pale and equally tasteless strips of beef. It really couldn't be worse and more unimaginative than this. When we made this known, the chef gave the reason that it was not pork, so it might have been less tasty. To compensate, two glasses of coke were deducted from the bill. We thought this was really bad and the restaurant was a winner for us. A hefty bill followed, where a small bowl of rice was charged 6 euros. Not a second time for us Ukiyo.

Rarely have I had such good sushi. From the starters to the dessert it was a very successful evening. Great location with nice service and great food. Happy to come back!

We had great expectations for this new vegetarian friendly restaurant in Middelburg. Judging by the reviews and photos, this should be very tasty. Unfortunately it was a bit disappointing. It started well: an appetizer from the house, which was very tasty, and the miso soup was also good! The vegetable tempura was partly good, but some pieces such as the pepper and sweet potato were partly hard/raw. We also had a sushi roll. This was sliced ​​very thin and rolled loosely which resulted in it falling apart quickly. With the many ingredients you expected a taste and texture exhibition, but actually it was a bit “bland”. The wasabi and soy sauce was necessary. While we were still working on the tempura, the staff came 3 times to remove the plate. There was still food here on what we were still eating. There were really too many questions about whether everything tasted good, whether anything else needed to be ordered, or whether to quickly remove plates/bottles, etc., which completely took you out of the flow of the food and company. As a main course we had the vegan ramen. We found this to be on the sweet side and without much depth, so you quickly get tired of the flavor (I've never had this with other ramen). The noodles themselves did not taste homemade. It feels far away from exclusive dining, which one expects for that price.

Very tasty sushi! Toro is phenomenally tender and the sushi rice is very well cooked and seasoned! Sushi creations were unusual and very nicely prepared. I will gladly come again!

Unfortunately, price/performance is not right. The staff was very nice but the food was a bit too special in our opinion. The long waiting times between the dishes were also annoying because we didn't order very many (4 dishes) and still waited about an hour for everything to arrive.

We really enjoyed the menu and the delicious sushi. Everything looked and tasted great, the presentation was really nice too. Our favorites: Toro tataki, himachi nigiri, unagi dragon, and the lemon dream! A little more variety in cold specialty drinks would be nice, especially with the warmer weather. The Basil Smash was tasty but the Refreshing Rose tasted slightly better and was the only one on the menu that sounded good (also had to do with allergies) The food was on the pricey side, but still definitely worth it to eat tasty authentic sushi and put a nice twist on Japanese cuisine. We have already recommended the restaurant to several friends and we will definitely come back!

It is good but overall I expected a bit more. Let's start with the obvious: no alcohol at this place, the reasons vary but all right. The drink menu has a lot of sodas and mixed drinks. Secondly, it is shared dining, which means you order and do not get all your food at once, time in between dishes is 10 min sometimes, so they motivate you to share your dishes with your friends because otherwise, it will be just you or them eating. The food was okay, a bit expensive and at times it looked way better than it tasted. Do not get me wrong, it tasted good, but for the price, I expected more. Often there would be no harmony in flavours, just a lot of ingredients put together in and on top of rolls. I can't say anything really stood out, I never tasted anything that made me go "ooh!", it was forgettable. The gyoza was soggy and not crisp at the bottom, but the tempura was all right. The noodle dishes were enough to feed three, so keep that in mind, though doggy bags are allowed. The service was okay, they asked us a lot of times whether we liked the food or wanted more drinks, maybe because they thought it strange we only drank water (not a fan of weird mixed drinks and sodas). The menu was huge and took a lot of time to go through, but a lot of sushi was mixed items with things like cream cheese. It was a mix of typical dishes also found at all-you-can-eat chains and a variation of traditional sushi and American-style sushi (the cheese etc). Was it a step up from other places? In terms of atmosphere yes, it was quiet and cosy, but in terms of food, things were not as memorable as one may have hoped.

Once again we had a fantastic evening. Good quality of food in a nice restaurant with a pleasant atmosphere and friendly staff. Also delicious desserts.

This is different from an all-you-can-eat Japanese restaurant. Delicious sushi and sashimi. The Dragon rolls are really great. You do pay something for it.

Japanese food at it's best, prepared professional from best quality. Please expect exceptional food and good service. Some waiting for food is not avoidable. The staff could be trained better. The location is remarkable. Reservation is highly recommended. No alcohol is served.

The food is incredibly tasty. The only deal breaker for me is that no alcohol is served. I like a glass of wine with a fish dish / sushi. The service is also substandard (for a restaurant where you spend approximately €80-100 per person). Unfortunately, this means that we will not return.

I have never tasted so many different, new and delicious flavors. Don't say it often, but this is honestly a very unique restaurant. No alcohol is served, the drinks they make have a unique taste (just like the rest of the food) and with some types of fish you get a card with a barcode that you can scan to see, for example, when it was caught, how heavy, etc. Furthermore, there is a nice, calm atmosphere and the staff is very friendly. Can't wait to try the rest of the menu!!

We had a delicious meal here, it is not an all you can eat restaurant and we deliberately do not serve alcohol. This can be read on their site. We started with an appetizer on the house with a delicious taste and beautifully presented. Then we could order from the extensive menu. The service is very friendly and they prepare everything fresh. The desserts are beautifully presented. Definitely recommended to eat here.

Everyone knew what had to be done and knew about the products used in the dishes. Yet there was also room for a bit of fun. All together a great experience.
