Favorite cappuccino shop in town. These colleagues radiate that they understand coffee and have a passion for it. I like it. The armchairs and chairs outside are relaxed, nicer than the wooden chairs. Beans for home good.

Great place to get very nice coffee in Groningen. It is cosy inside at the staff is friendly. They sell great specialty beans that they roast themselves, I’ve bought a few bags so far. I would characterize the coffee beans as a medium to light roast, but it’s definitely a bit more on the medium side for filter. They also sell supplies here like V60 filter papers. I just want to mention that I appreciate the plastic less packaging for the coffee!

I enjoyed my first cup of coffee in my life here years ago. The owner taught me how to make such delicious coffee at home and I am still reaping the benefits of it years later. If you don't like coffee, this is the place to start learning to drink and appreciate coffee. I'm kind of snobbish about a good cup of coffee now. I recommend everyone to get filter coffee at Black&Bloom with its versatile flavors. Please don't put sugar in it! Taste it as it is first! All the food you can get there is also on point in terms of taste and structure. I have been a regular guest for many years. And this is the place I still go to when I can choose the coffee spot.

Went here for the first time 5 years ago, before the corona. Delicious freshly ground coffee made with passion and perfection, after 5 years it has become many times busier, mainly with tourists or foreign students. The coffee is no longer made with passion and perfection as before, everything has to happen quickly unfortunately.

Despite the crowds, Gerben manages to serve us a delicious espresso (with a delicacy) in a short time. I tasted the second espresso for a long time (in a positive way) while we walked around beautiful Groningen

I came in on a very busy day, and still received great service. The staff was kind, and quite quick with the coffee. I loved the cappuccino I ordered, along with the Vanilla and Cinnamon latte. Things were a bit all over the place at times due to the busyness at the time, but the staff still served customers with a smile. Can definitely recommend!

Cool café with delicious coffee specialties

A review that should have been given a long time ago. We have been coming to Gerben for a long time for his delicious filter coffee and home-roasted beans for home use. Today we had another delicious soft filter coffee that was just as soft and sweet as during our first visit. The winter special, the apple cider, is also great. What a kick from the ginger. Delicious!

Black & Bloom, Groningen’s first artisan espresso bar, is a haven for coffee lovers. Serving single-origin beans, expertly brewed espressos on a Synesso machine, and filter options like Hario, Kalita, and Aeropress, the coffee is outstanding. You can even buy their exceptional coffee beans to enjoy at home. I used to buy 250-gram bags in the store, but I recently switched to ordering from their website, where they offer 1kg bags as well. In my opinion, it’s the ultimate spot for insanely good coffee with personality.

Coffee shop where it's all about: coffee. Years ago I had my first pourover here, it was a discovery. The owner likes to think along and dares to choose for you if you don't know. I like to get the best espresso in Groningen here at the same time as some freshly roasted beans (by Black & Bloom itself) for home! Also great pastries by the way..

Coffee is great if you can deal with the owners personality. Some may find it charming, some patronising and many shades in between, he has strong personality indeed, making his cafe more about him then customer. But the quality of the product is high. Up to you :)

Very nice specialty coffee, well prepared and nicely presented.

Every time I visit the city of Groningen for business, I really enjoy the great ambiance and delicious coffee. For the long car ride home, I always take a "Take away coffee" with me, which is a pleasure every time. The owner is a truly passionate Barista who serves exceptionally good coffee.

We went here because of the good reviews, but what a disappointment, we wanted filter coffee with coffee milk, but they don't have coffee milk! But now I understand why 'the coffee is so weak, with coffee milk it would be impossible to drink at all! Then, out of necessity, something else, also weak and not hot! A little lukewarm water for almost 8 euros! Worst thing we have ever experienced, this was the 1st, but also the last time, colorless, odorless, but above all tasteless! On a scale of 1 to 10, black and bloom gets a big 1!

Amazing!!! I had the best vanilla iced latte I’ve had in a while. The ratio of sugar-coffee is remarkable. Totally recommend.

Such an amazing little place! The coffee is such great quality and so are the cakes (order the cheesecake you’ll love it). Lovely atmosphere, other guests are so friendly, and for what you get I think it’s a good price.

Coffee decent but unfortunately no real oat milk

Very nice coffee bar with a super nice decor. The Lego sets throughout the bar are a really nice touch. The coffee itself was delicious, if I am ever in Groningen again I will definitely stop here again.

I was in Groningen for a day, and I’m always on the lookout for a good cup of coffee. Found it. I got a nice filter and my kid had something called monkey balls. Evidently that was good, too. I love it when you go to a place and you can feel the personality of the proprietor. Some places feel like they were designed by a focus group, but this is a very sincere place that feels exactly as the owner wanted it to be. It’s pretty great, and I wish it was in my town.

Espresso set was great!! Tanzania espresso is highly recommended. And the coffee made with homemade beans from Guatemala also tasted very good. We will definitely come back!

The coffee is great and most professional. The pastries are not so good. There is never “today’s loaf” and unlike years ago, no loafs such as rhubarb loaf which was great back in 2022... No fruit and savory scones like in London. No muffins. Only terrible cakes that were popular in the 80s.

Best coffee in the city in my opinion, very nice owner also gave us good tips on how to consume it. I had a delicious affogato, but the cappuccino is also wonderful. I can highly recommend it.

In my opinion the best & coziest coffee & homemade baked goods in Groningen city, especially the blondie! Owner is sometimes a little scary but always polite, friendly and helpful. He loves what he does and it shows, always looking for the best available and giving those who love great coffee a wonderful experience. Plus, he's a massive Coldplay fan so that adds extra points.

I’m disappointed. We were ridiculed for the fact that we asked about coffee with an oat milk. The coffee was burnt and sour, without latte art, the taste of this oat milk was terrible, just as barista warned us. I had the impression that he intentionally served us such bad coffee. I just left it, I couldn't drink it. I wanted to leave this place as soon as possible. My mum and boyfriend drank their coffees by force. I wonder why to serve such coffee in your own place what you personally can’t recommend? Why not to tell the guests (preferably in a polite and non-judgemental way) that here they can get coffee only with cow's milk? I respect people’s choices, I’ll just go somewhere else. In my opinion, the place is responsible for the taste of each product he offers to guests. Unless they do it to make money, because they certainly get a lot of questions about oat milk every day. It's just unpleasant to make fun of customers' tastes. I don’t wish to anyone judge my taste preferences. It's better to refuse the service than to spoil someone's day with rude service.

Came to Groningen from Nijmegen twice especially for the coffee. The owner is the definition of a professional. Super friendly and helpful. The baristas we saw once were also great. And of course better coffee nowhere!

Very chill and cozy place to have a cup of coffee. Sufficient choice on the menu, but nothing over the top. Coffee was tasty and service excellent. Original decor, funko pops, Lego junk and other trinkets, cool posters on the wall, really a place to come back to.

Wonderful little spot to have a coffee with a welcoming smile and great service

When I placed my order, I immediately asked for a glass of water. The owner, Gerben, didn't give me water or show me where it was, instead he said that water comes with the espresso and asked me to take a seat. The espresso comes with a tiny shot glass of water, and that wasn't enough. I walked to the bar and stood in front of the owner, but he ignored me and walked away to do something else. This lack of customer service led me to look for a water jug ​​myself. Unfortunately I couldn't find anything and quickly turned on a tap to quench my thirst. At that moment the owner came back and made it clear in a rude manner that the tap is not for customers. The glass was taken from my hand and the owner filled it up with great annoyance. I immediately packed my things and paid, but instead of a polite conclusion, the owner started complaining again about the fact that I had used the tap. He pointed out a kettle to me, too late, and emphasized again that I should have asked for water. Well...I immediately asked for water upon entering and waited for him at the bar, but he didn't come to meet me. When I indicated that I did not want to be addressed that way, he shouted after me as I walked out the door: "And have a nice day!". I have to give one star for this. The quality of the products is completely irrelevant when you are treated in such a disrespectful manner. No doubt there will be a smart response from the "friendly" owner, but I won't bother reading it. This is a man who is always right, and will always have the last word...

Al jaren maken ze hier heerlijke koffie, en bieden een fijne sfeer. Gerben is duidelijk wat softer aan het worden met een millennial latte op het menu en dit soort borden bij de voordeur ;)

Het was erg druk en de eigenaar deed zijn best om alles in zijn eentje af te handelen, maar de zaak was afgeladen. Daardoor was er toch iets van een gespannen sfeer. Helaas was de espresso aan de zure kant (niet fruitig of funky in mijn beleving). We hebben er niets van gezegd, maar hadden we achteraf wel kunnen doen. Ik denk dat ik nog een keer langskom om het een tweede kans te geven. De earopress koffie was namelijk heel erg goed en de rabarber taart ook!

Excellent, strong coffee and good selection of beans. You can tell the staff know their coffee. The brownie was also pretty good. However the seating is limited, so you may have to wait or come later if you want to sit in. Pleasant nerdy decor and books make for a pleasant environment.

After ten years, this is still the best coffee you can find in Groningen. Their own roasts are great, and if you're open to it, you can get great advice about what kind of coffee you should get based on what you like. And if you don't like it, you can just say so and they will get you something else. If you enjoy LEGO, this place is heaven. The owner has a small obsession so there's a bunch of awesome sets to admire, including a massive Millennium Falcon and Batwing. The atmosphere is great. It's a small place, so on crowded days you'll have to time your visit well. But that just goes to show how good the coffee is. Edit: they now have a plant-based milk option. While its a good option that allows you to properly taste the coffee, it's still a step down from regular milk and I think people used to the sweeter oat and other alternatives will be turned off by it. My recommendation is to just get one of the amazing filters. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Some of the best coffee I've had in my travels. It's rare to get a cappuccino where you can perfectly taste all the coffee notes. The boss really knows his stuff! Also plenty of legos and sci-fi decor around for those who appreciate it. Just keep in mind this place gets very busy, but it's still worth it. If you're not used to high-quality coffee with strong taste notes you may find the coffee strange at the beginning but it's worth giving it a go. It will change your view on coffee completely.

Sinds mijn man en ik dit hebben ontdekt (op advies van een vriendin, hobby barista) is vooral mijn man hier niet meer weg te krijgen en wil hij iedereen meenemen hierheen. Hij is gek op de filterkoffie, zelf vind ik die totaal niet lekker, maar de mocha daarintegen vind ik dan weer heerlijk! Het voelt alsof je in iemand woonkamer binnenstapt ipv in een koffietentje, ik persoonlijk ben niet zo'n fan van de inrichting/sfeer, maar alles in netjes en schoon. Er wordt fijne muziek gespeeld op het goede geluidsniveau. De koffies worden leuk geserveerd. Wel een klein beetje jammer dat de laatste keer dat we hier waren en drie vrienden hadden meegenomen er voor het eerst helemaal geen leuke latte art op de koffies zat. Maar overall is dit zeker een aanrader om eens naartoe te gaan als je van koffie houdt! Ook van thee trouwens, want ze hebben ook heerlijke verse thee opties!

Zijn hier langsgekomen voor een kopje koffie, beste keize ooit. De sfeer is hardstikke gezellig en huiselijk, dit wordt enorm geholpen door de aangename service. Een hele aardige barista, die zulke goede koffie klaarmaakt. Voor koffie thee of een lekkernij, kom zeker eventjes een bezoekje maken

Local coffee roaster but more focused on dark coffee roasts. The flat white we had looked good but was not that good. The coffee smelled woody, burnt and dusty. Ambiente was quite nice with all the legos 😊 REPLY UPDATE: Since I somehow cannot answer to the owner I do this by updating the post. I only was in Groningen for the weekend and won't come back for at least one year. However I'd love to come back and try some of your other coffees! I feed the unroasted green coffee could have been a bit old before roasting because older green coffee result in woody and actually quite unpleasent flavours in the roasted coffee. However I'd not consider myself an expert, it's just something I read about a few weeks ago.

De koffie is echt heel lekker , veel keuze aan bijzondere soorten koffie. Aardige meneer die heerlijke koffies bereid, het ziet er ook goed uit met leuke glazen en een mooi plankje erbij. Zeker aan te raden voor de koffie liefhebber! (Ook ruime keuze aan thee, fris een warme choco).

Knus, cappuccino was helaas koud, weinig mensen maar personeel toch niet zo alert, kwaliteit koffie en taart was wel goed.

Der Barista ist atemberaubend, so gelassen, ruhig und freundlich. Hat sich Zeit genommen um ein bisschen was zu erklären. Ein Muss in Groningen!!!

Het is een hele fijne, rustige plek om te genieten van koffie en thee. De eigenaar is erg aardig en heeft altijd tijd om zijn passie voor koffie te delen. Ik ben hier nu een paar keer geweest met mijn vriend (die zelf erg enthousiast over koffie is) en elke ervaring is ons bijgebleven. Zeker een aanrader voor iedereen die een speciale koffie ervaring zoekt!

Had about 3 interactions with the staff, 2 of them were negative. Staff seems unnecessarily intense and uptight. No laptop rule also eliminates it as a space to work or hold meetings.
