Just enjoy a few local beers in the evening - that's a great option here. The house beer on tap wasn't that great, though. Update after Erik & team responded (thank you!!): I think it was the Gulpener Pilsner.

I will admit, I came for the cats :) and I guess they were sleeping during my stay. They're free spirits and if you're lucky you might see them, just like people who travel to see the Northern Lights - it's not guaranteed. But the beer was! Many great beers, staff and patrons were lovely. Bartender and I spoke the same language so i ended up staying talking and drinking for a long time. One of the cats came out for a stroll at the end! Great and cozy place, just grab a beer and strike up some conversation!

If in Utrecht and like beer, go to this place. Loads of different beers, friendly staff and very chilled atmosphere. Visit!

It is actually a converted living room. What an atmosphere. Nice and busy, cozy, friendly. Beer selection is good. Recommended.

Old-fashioned brown pub, lots of special beers

I was so happy! Finally to the kitty bar! I had been looking forward to it for weeks: an evening full of furry friends and a nice beer. I even drove an hour for it. This was going to be great! But when we arrived, it started to get weird. The entrance was completely blocked by people with chairs. It was crowded inside, no place to sit. But that didn't matter, I came for the kitties! So I started looking. Under chairs, under tables, at the bar. Maybe they were sleeping somewhere? Or were they hiding? But... no tail anywhere, no soft purring, no curious ears peeking around the corner. Just. No. Kittys. My heart sank. A kitty bar without kitties?! Where were they? Why weren't they there? This was not a cozy kitty café experience, this was just a regular bar... and I felt so disappointed. Where are the KITTY'S! NOWHERE!!!

Lovely bartender who helped my boyfriend with great selections. Really local ambience and you can buy the glasses!

A varied beer and drinks menu. Good atmosphere

One of those brown cafés that were on a hard track to extinction due to covid but somehow reinvented themselves, becoming more popular than ever. They have an insane and ever-changing selection of (rare) beers, an in-crowd from utrechts' fossilised artist scene and always plenty of 'gezelligheid' for friends and strangers alike. Can be quite busy, but wether that's a bad thing or a perk I'll leave up to you. 9/10 will definitely come back to drink strong beer on a tuesday afternoon again. note: they don't really serve any food, just snacks

Café Derat is a gem in Utrecht! The atmosphere is exactly what you are looking for in a brown pub: cozy, cozy and casual. The beer list is fantastically extensive, but what really makes this place unique are the pub cats Josefien and Stip. They walk around relaxed and complete it completely. The great team behind the bar contributes to the pleasant atmosphere with their good service. Whether you come for a specialty beer, a chat or just the nice ambiance, Café Derat never disappoints!

Was here for the first time in a while, and the beer selection is really impressive. You can count really well-known beers on one hand, so you're guaranteed to taste something new. With soft background music and very nice people (staff and customers), the name Huiskamercafé fits perfectly here. Delicious!

Very nice bar that feels very local and cozy and where everyone is welcome. It gives it a brown pub idea that is contemporary and where everyone is welcome. Both regulars and new customers feel welcome. Including house cats and of course a very large selection of beer.

Fantastic little pub. Feels very authentically Dutch. Great beer selection (we daren’t touch the 7.5% liquorice stout) and really friendly bar staff. Could easily spend the entire evening in there.

By far mijn favoriet in Utrecht. Een heerlijke knusse bruine kroeg met zitplek voor zo’n 20-25 mensen en totale capaciteit van (ik schat) 50, is dit een heerlijke plek om te zitten. Goede bierkaart en gezelligheid. Who needs more?

I have been coming here for many years, it is still nice to be here. The service is not improving. Smartphone is apparently more important than the customer. Just wait at the bar for five minutes until I am noticed and helped... A bit of a shame, no advice or knowledge of what beer is on offer. That used to be different with Erik, unfortunately...

Really lovely and cozy bar with some cute cats that like to lounge by you while you enjoy a beer! They had a nice selection of drinks for very fair prices, and I liked that the atmosphere felt relaxed and low-key. Will definitely be back here again when I'm in the area.

By far my favorite pub in Utrecht. It just shows how important the brown café is as a meeting place and why it is important that they continue to exist. Always delicious beers, friendly staff, cozy atmosphere and two sweet cats. And the location at the intersection of Lange Smeetstraat and Springweg is also great!

Very cozy cafe with a very nice beer list. There are also 2 cats who are very relaxed and like to be petted by visitors. Nice place for a good glass of beer, not a place for large groups, but with a few good friends.

Ordered two specialty beers, which were fine, but there was a best before date on the bottle of November 2020, 3 years past the date?! Reported it to the bartender and he said that they were doing an experiment in the cellar and were trying to keep beers as long as possible... a bit strange, but it should have been mentioned, especially because we were laughed at a bit by the bartender while I think he was just trying to get rid of old beers with this excuse

Erg leuk buurtcafé met een snel wisselende bieren op de tap. Op vrijdag en zaterdag wordt je aan het eind van de dag getrakteerd op een hapje.

Een klassieke kroeg, met klassieke gasten. Geen studentenkroeg. Lekker down to earth, en iets mildere sluitingstijden dan andere kroegen.

The best place in Utrecht. They don't have a lot of food but the cheese they have is great. Everyone is nice and the cats are the best.

Leuke en gezellige sfeer. En een heerlijk biertje van de tap. Komen allerlei mensen van overal vandaan. Echt een aanrader.

The only place in the entirety of the Netherlands that I found more than just Apple Bandit cider, and it was actually great! I came here twice throughout my stay in Utrecht, and it was such a relaxing spot to stay. The other reviews have mentioned them, but the cats were a joy to spend time with. The atmosphere is very cosy and I only wish I could have spent more time here.

Wir waren dort für eine Bierprobe die sehr zu empfehlen ist, die Kneipe ist sehr urig und bietet einen riesige Auswahl an Bieren . Die Bierprobe war sehr informativ und die Biere waren sehr gut ausgewählt für jeden Geschmack was dabei ein Traum.

Superleuk cafe met heel veel verschillende speciaalbieren. Het personeel is supergezellig en weet je goed te helpen als je het zelf niet helemaal weet. Staan altijd klaar om even te kletsen. Ik klm hier graag vaker!

Kleine aber feine Kneipe mit einer großen Auswahl an Bier. Es ist sehr schwer sich zu entscheiden. Sehr freundliche Bedienung. 🙂 Und regelmäßiger Katzenbesuch.

My wife and I spent two weeks in the Netherlands and Belgium. Of all the cafés and tap rooms we visited, so many 😵, DeRat was my favorite. Great selection, kind and knowledgeable owner / bartenders, friendly locals, cats, cheese, history. What more could you ask for?

Cool bar I stumbled across from a Reddit recommendation. There was a very solid selection of beer and some snacks and sandwiches were offered (I think). The age range of people seemed fairly diverse, people were just hanging out and talking. Definitely would recommend checking out. There was at least one bar cat, which is always a welcome addition.

Great beer selection. Can be crowded. Doesn't play music, at least during happy hour, but it is lively with conversation. English is understood. The crowd is late 30's to 70's. I think there was some nuts, etc on the bar, but not a real food place. Mb called Cafe DeRat, but there is always a cat on the premises. If you're allergic to cats, might be a consideration. Personally, i would take an allergy pill and go anyway.

Geen muziek (althans het volume was zo laag dat je het niet hoorde). We kwamen juist omdat dit een van de weinige bars zou zijn met rockmuziek. Bar voelde sfeerloos door het gebrek aan muziek. Wel heel veel biersoorten maar door een gebrek aan omschrijvingen zie je door de bomen het bos niet. Onhandige opstelling. 2 mensen struikelden over de stoelen bij de tafel die pal voor de deur stond. Een oudere man ging echt gestrekt. Wellicht kwamen we op een ongelukkig moment maar we hadden er meer van verwacht.

El bar es pequeño y acogedor y ofrece una fantástica variedad de cervezas artesanales a precios razonables. También hay un bar completo y una amplia gama de jenevers. Este es uno de mis bares favoritos en cualquier lugar. Puede ser completo y muy completo, pero el servicio y la bienvenida son siempre de muy alto nivel. En momentos más tranquilos, es un gran lugar para pasar el rato y charlar. A veces hay música que se suma a la atmósfera sin abrumarla. El bar es el hogar de dos gatos. Esta es una característica brillante. No te molestan, pero ten cuidado si tienes una alergia. No puedo recomendar el lugar lo suficiente. Está lejos de la zona principal de la fiesta, pero lo suficientemente cerca como para poder caminar.

Fijn personeel met goed advies. Zelfs fusten die ze zelf rijpen in de kelder om iets speciaals te krijgen. Een mooie mengeling van leeftijden en soort mensen zorgt voor fijne vibes. Ik zou er de hele dag kunnen zitten!
