Enjoyed a delicious daily special

Nice traditional pub, varied menu, friendly service. Centrally located in the center of Hengelo with a terrace. A different daily special is also available every day. Reservations possible.

Had a delicious meal in the conservatory, very cozy. Good service, although they were quite busy. It is also pleasant to sit outside, nice Apple of the Day.

For years, this restaurant has completely disregarded lactose intolerance, other allergens, and veganism. While there is plenty of room for a single box of vegan meat in the freezer, they refuse any cooperation whatsoever with these groups. For years, they have been luring vegans onto their website with, for example, an avocado burger, mushrooms in beer batter, or a vegan ham, cheese, and egg sandwich, but upon arrival, they do not have these items, and it makes absolutely no sense. I ate a huge bowl of salad here—pretty much a whole head, as if I were a rabbit and didn't feel like a hot dinner. Other establishments in Hengelo or the surrounding area always have something vegan or can come up with something. Not De Appel. They are unwilling to update the menu (covering up vegan symbols, an hour's work) within a reasonable timeframe, but are gambling on the next menu in October, which offers no guarantees. They are also unwilling to make a few minor adjustments to the website. It was supposedly made by a Turk, and Mr. Hu's restaurant 'de Pan,' which, just like other establishments, always has some vegan option, is allegedly 'not a real restaurant.' The manager also refused to give his first name and claimed to speak for everyone within the company, including other managers and the owner. Twice. I feel that this company is by far the most arrogant I have encountered in the Netherlands so far. As far as I am concerned, it is a matter for the Advertising Code Committee, the NVWA, and the ACM to investigate this further. Our group spent 116 euros for a visit, but I assume we are just the tip of the iceberg of people who were lured here by misleading advertising. The defense is also that Apple removes all sorts of things from a sandwich or salad so that a thinned-out sandwich remains, which can then be called vegan and is supposedly the same product as on the menu and can be sold for the same price. This is simply not true. The defense was also that the customer should just figure everything out and ask around once they are in the restaurant to avoid lactose intolerance, cream, cheese, egg, or milk, from staff known for not knowing everything. This manager didn't even know his own menu either. A massive, massive fail for the Appel, right here.

I had a healthy sandwich. The gluten-free roll was the cheapest and driest one from the Shar brand. A small roll for which I had to pay an extra euro. Now, I already find it outrageous that you have to pay extra for gluten-free bread; they hardly do that anywhere in the hospitality industry. But if you do decide to charge extra, make sure you serve a nice, large gluten-free baguette (brown with seeds/nuts). This is really not okay!!

Nice place for a fun evening, friendly service.

Nice cafe right in the middle of the shopping street. A bit noisy, but cozy. The bitterballen are mediocre. It closed early when there was hardly anyone left.

Nice coffee and nice sandwiches

The Wiener Schnitzel here is a lukewarm, processed meat concoction, the fries are soggy, the frozen vegetables are still crunchy, and the mushroom cream sauce comes in such a tiny container that you might as well not bother. Any cafeteria could do much better. The service, although the term "service" doesn't really seem appropriate here, was abysmal. Everyone has a bad day now and then, okay, you can show it to the customer, or not. However, it was obvious that five of the five "service" employees present had absolutely no desire to offer the patrons anything even remotely friendly or polite, let alone a smile, a greeting, or anything of the sort. So it was only logical that napkins and cutlery weren't served with the food; you had to get them yourself at the counter. Terrible, folks, absolutely terrible…

It was busy, but the orders came through quickly. We had a delicious meal. Generous portions. It was a shame about that cigar-smoking gentleman right behind our table, though.

Too bad. Today I thought I was getting a nice daily special because it included steak. Well, the steak was overcooked, which wasn't what we asked for. And we ordered bottles of Spa Blue and asked for a clear date on the bottle, but unfortunately, it wasn't there, even though a staff member said it was. It's a real disappointment, because normally when we order the daily special with salmon or chicken satay, it's always good. It's a shame though, because my girlfriend went here with me for the first time and it was quite a disappointment for her.

Slow service that pays no attention to the customer. It took a very long time before an order was taken, even though they had dried our bench and therefore knew there were customers.

Rude waitresses, totally uninterested. Did not feel welcome at all and every question was answered with harsh commentary! Total letdown.

Fish and chips Daily Special: the fish was nowhere to be found, it was nothing but dough. According to the cook, nothing could be done about it. Wow, how customer-friendly.🥵

Disappointed for the third time. You come for the Apple Bite and then you are told it's sold out. Then you are forced to make another choice. And by then you are at least 10 euros poorer per person. It seems like this is a sales strategy, what a shame. I'm not falling for it again, I'm going somewhere else. Apple, thank you for the nice moments we had with you.

Good and friendly and easily accessible

Fine, but really nothing special. Service, on the other hand, was also quite blunt and impersonal. I had the signature double hamburger. Which is made impossible to eat as a hamburger by the two standard beef patties (supermarket quality) that are thick but not wide... you see the problem. Just all very basic. Fine, but not for me.

Great daily special! For 2 people, it cost €65 for the daily special, dessert, and 3 drinks per person. Plus, good service and nice people.

The dietary and allergen logos are completely inaccurate. The menu features many logos (vegan, vegetarian, lactose-free), but none of them are actually correct. Many items containing cheese and cream have a lactose-free and vegan logo. Mushrooms in beer batter were listed as vegan under starters, but as lactose-free and vegetarian under main courses. I wanted to inquire if this was correct, but the employee was uncooperative. The employee kept insisting that if it says vegan on the menu, it is vegan, and initially refused to check. After he finally did inquire, it turned out to be incorrect and that it actually contains egg. The only thing that was vegan was sold out. No further effort was made to see if anything else could be made vegan; I was, however, able to get a salad without cheese. So we just left. It is remarkable that a menu is put together so poorly and that employees walk around without any knowledge whatsoever. So, I would not recommend going out to eat if you have allergies or dietary requirements.

Hadn't been there for about four or five years, but had lunch yesterday. No awe-inspiring experiences for us. Everything was just a little off. The service, the coffee, and the sandwiches. For 40 euros, you expect a bit more, and you'll also get better (flavor) quality at other places in Hengelo. It's a nice pub for a beer on the terrace, but we'd rather not eat there.

6 shrimps and 3 pieces of baguette for 12 euros, outrageous!

I had a fantastic meal at De Appel in Hengelo on my first day: excellent service and friendly staff. Unfortunately, the second day wasn't as good. My schnitzel was tasteless and the crust was soggy. When I mentioned this, the waiter responded unprofessionally with, "What should I do about it? / You ordered it yourself and everyone else likes it." It's a shame, because the first day was fantastic, but because of the second day, I won't be returning anytime soon.

You can just enjoy a nice cup of coffee or tea here.

I had a salad and it was delicious. I sat outside and it was very warm despite the wind, the restaurant provides blankets.

Schnitzel with fries. Quite expensive. A thimbleful of mushroom sauce and mayo in a paper cup. The paneer had completely separated from the small slice of meat and was mushy. No vegetables or garnishes. A shame.

I can only say it was perfect. Not too big and not too small, but just right. A bit pricey after all, but the quality is top-notch. Keep up the good work, and the staff are friendly. My wife absolutely loved the salmon.

Great music. The volume is also fantastic. The staff is as attentive as a goldfish. You practically have to shout at them before they come to your table to help you. It's also cool that Snoop Dog works in the kitchen here!

The "Appeltje van de dag," the daily special for €11.95 (August 2025), is a great way to go to De Appel. The covered terrace offers comfortable seating. We had a good portion of spare ribs with fries, mayonnaise, and raw vegetables. The service was friendly and quick. One downside for me: smoking is allowed on the terrace. Note: reservations are NOT accepted for the daily special!

Great food in a nice place in the city, friendly service

Unfortunately, after sitting on the terrace for 10 minutes, nobody spoke to me. So, no opinion on the food. A little further down the road, I had an excellent lunch at De 2 Wezen.

We wanted to go to De Appel after work at 6:00 PM for the daily special. Once at De Appel, I asked if the daily special was still available, and the employee replied that they only serve it until 5:00 PM. POOR SERVICE, as the website displays it completely differently! Daily special until 9:30 PM while supplies last! APPLES OF THE DAY ARE DAILY DEALS, AVAILABLE WHILE SUPPLIES LAST. THESE ARE ONLY VALID ON THE DAY OF THE OFFER, FROM 4:00 PM TO 9:30 PM. RESERVATIONS ARE NOT POSSIBLE. I think it's a real shame.

Personally, I think the most important thing is that it's fast and friendly. The food arrived quickly, didn't take long at all, and it tasted exactly as it should. The atmosphere was a bit lackluster, which they can't do much about; the location is a bit on the edge of the city center. Regardless, we had a pleasant evening, but I think I'll probably go to the other terraces near the town hall.

I'm a 57-year-old woman. Is it really that difficult for these young people if I order and serve the same drink? It was also the last time, and rightly so, no tip. Next time, I'll just go back to Houtmaat, which was unfortunately overcrowded today. Absolutely not recommended!

A very nice place in the center of Hengelo. The atmosphere is very cozy and does not feel too busy. There are enough places both outside and inside. The food was very tasty and the service was enthusiastic and fast.

Just cozy and still normal prices

Very friendly and polite service. We started with a very nice, warm and creamy cup of capocino, which came to our table within minutes. 10 minutes later we decided to order a 'uitsmijter ham, kaas, ham'. It was very tasty, preparation was brought to us within 10 minutes. We enjoyed our stay very much and tipped the staff generously.

Had Easter brunch there for the first time on Easter Sunday with my wife and son. Considering the price (excluding drinks) it was a bit disappointing. Soup beforehand was OK, but the croissants and rolls seemed to us to be from the supermarket and not really fresh. Also sweets in a tub, one cold egg was not what we were used to. No, for the money it wasn't great.

There were clearly too few staff present. Apologies were also made several times for the longer wait. Our order was "sold out", not even the meal of the day, but just a choice from the menu. The allergen map is incorrect, I find it worrying and embarrassing. Several dishes on the menu that were supposed to be lactose free were not. After ordering, the staff came back to tell us that the dish was not lactose free. The allergen card cannot be trusted!!

The food menu was excellent with a large group. They are not fully prepared for that. Food wasn't very hot. Good, but not really warm. There were also a lot of people this evening (maybe too many) which made it very noisy. The staff was certainly friendly, but they ran themselves inside out. You can sit comfortably here, but the number of guests should be much less if the walkways are also full of guests.

Reasonable price, but the quality left much to be desired. The food was mediocre, although the atmosphere in the restaurant was fine. However, the service was disappointing; while not all staff were unfriendly, service was generally poor. We got there at 2:45 PM. It was busy, but not full. Yet the food was put on the table hastily and special requests, such as omitting tomatoes, were not listened to.
