Cozy restaurant with a heated terrace.

Hadn't been there for about four or five years, but had lunch yesterday. No awe-inspiring experiences for us. Everything was just a little off. The service, the coffee, and the sandwiches. For 40 euros, you expect a bit more, and you'll also get better (flavor) quality at other places in Hengelo. It's a nice pub for a beer on the terrace, but we'd rather not eat there.

6 shrimps and 3 pieces of baguette for 12 euros, outrageous!

The apple of the day was perfect, salad with a delicious dressing, perfectly cooked meat, and tasty fries... only the sweet mayonnaise takes some getting used to...

I had a fantastic meal at De Appel in Hengelo on my first day: excellent service and friendly staff. Unfortunately, the second day wasn't as good. My schnitzel was tasteless and the crust was soggy. When I mentioned this, the waiter responded unprofessionally with, "What should I do about it? / You ordered it yourself and everyone else likes it." It's a shame, because the first day was fantastic, but because of the second day, I won't be returning anytime soon.

You can just enjoy a nice cup of coffee or tea here.

I had a salad and it was delicious. I sat outside and it was very warm despite the wind, the restaurant provides blankets.

Schnitzel with fries. Quite expensive. A thimbleful of mushroom sauce and mayo in a paper cup. The paneer had completely separated from the small slice of meat and was mushy. No vegetables or garnishes. A shame.

I can only say it was perfect. Not too big and not too small, but just right. A bit pricey after all, but the quality is top-notch. Keep up the good work, and the staff are friendly. My wife absolutely loved the salmon.

I had the teriyaki salad, which was amazing. My only complain is that the steak was cold/ didn't seem to be freshly cooked.

Briefly stopped in Hengelo for lunch, went to De Appel. The staff were helpful, the Beef Teriyaki Salad was amazing, would thoroughly recommend. Excellent lunch.

Great music. The volume is also fantastic. The staff is as attentive as a goldfish. You practically have to shout at them before they come to your table to help you. It's also cool that Snoop Dog works in the kitchen here!

The "Appeltje van de dag," the daily special for €11.95 (August 2025), is a great way to go to De Appel. The covered terrace offers comfortable seating. We had a good portion of spare ribs with fries, mayonnaise, and raw vegetables. The service was friendly and quick. One downside for me: smoking is allowed on the terrace. Note: reservations are NOT accepted for the daily special!

Unfortunately, after sitting on the terrace for 10 minutes, nobody spoke to me. So, no opinion on the food. A little further down the road, I had an excellent lunch at De 2 Wezen.

We wanted to go to De Appel after work at 6:00 PM for the daily special. Once at De Appel, I asked if the daily special was still available, and the employee replied that they only serve it until 5:00 PM. POOR SERVICE, as the website displays it completely differently! Daily special until 9:30 PM while supplies last! APPLES OF THE DAY ARE DAILY DEALS, AVAILABLE WHILE SUPPLIES LAST. THESE ARE ONLY VALID ON THE DAY OF THE OFFER, FROM 4:00 PM TO 9:30 PM. RESERVATIONS ARE NOT POSSIBLE. I think it's a real shame.

Personally, I think the most important thing is that it's fast and friendly. The food arrived quickly, didn't take long at all, and it tasted exactly as it should. The atmosphere was a bit lackluster, which they can't do much about; the location is a bit on the edge of the city center. Regardless, we had a pleasant evening, but I think I'll probably go to the other terraces near the town hall.

Just cozy and still normal prices

Very friendly and polite service. We started with a very nice, warm and creamy cup of capocino, which came to our table within minutes. 10 minutes later we decided to order a 'uitsmijter ham, kaas, ham'. It was very tasty, preparation was brought to us within 10 minutes. We enjoyed our stay very much and tipped the staff generously.

Had Easter brunch there for the first time on Easter Sunday with my wife and son. Considering the price (excluding drinks) it was a bit disappointing. Soup beforehand was OK, but the croissants and rolls seemed to us to be from the supermarket and not really fresh. Also sweets in a tub, one cold egg was not what we were used to. No, for the money it wasn't great.

Nice pub. Quite noisy. The food is good, but nothing extraordinary. They have a lot of beers so if you like that then it's a place for you.

There were clearly too few staff present. Apologies were also made several times for the longer wait. Our order was "sold out", not even the meal of the day, but just a choice from the menu. The allergen map is incorrect, I find it worrying and embarrassing. Several dishes on the menu that were supposed to be lactose free were not. After ordering, the staff came back to tell us that the dish was not lactose free. The allergen card cannot be trusted!!

The food menu was excellent with a large group. They are not fully prepared for that. Food wasn't very hot. Good, but not really warm. There were also a lot of people this evening (maybe too many) which made it very noisy. The staff was certainly friendly, but they ran themselves inside out. You can sit comfortably here, but the number of guests should be much less if the walkways are also full of guests.

Reasonable price, but the quality left much to be desired. The food was mediocre, although the atmosphere in the restaurant was fine. However, the service was disappointing; while not all staff were unfriendly, service was generally poor. We got there at 2:45 PM. It was busy, but not full. Yet the food was put on the table hastily and special requests, such as omitting tomatoes, were not listened to.

Nice brown café where you can leisurely read the newspaper early in the morning with a cup of coffee. Delicious.

The six of us thought we would enjoy a nice snack! That was a big mistake! Daily menu no longer available! Stew not available. Then ordered a Schnitzel with the gentlemen. The expectations were high, but the result was (small) and disappointing! Cozy pub, but certainly not for the bite! Service was otherwise ok!

The behavior of the waiter is very bad. I was ignored. Service is very slow. Very bad place.

The dish “twelve o'clock” was poorly prepared. Lukewarm (most likely microwave heated) onion soup with a slice of cheese melted on top. An equally lukewarm croquette with a slice of bread and a piece of crackling baguette with cheese, ham salad, tomato and cucumber. There was no inspiration whatsoever in what was offered.

We ordered a 12 o'clock meal and a bouncer. Although the quality itself was sufficient, the garnish that came with it was an outright insult and disrespect to the customer. Green/brown dried out and wilted lettuce, yuck. How difficult can it be to present fresh lettuce? The staff took note of our comment about this. No excuses or anything like that Despite this, the atmosphere in the restaurant was fine. With some simple adjustments and attention to the customer (all free!) you can score 5 stars!

Eindelijk een gezellige plek waar je een vol glas wijn krijgt. Overal krijg je tegenwoordig een halfje maar hier goed gevuld. Daar worden we blij van! En de borrel plank was ook enorm, echt heerlijk allemaal, een aanrader. Bovendien gezellig druk en goede bediening!

The restaurant was close to my hotel. Looked inviting. Staff if kind, quick and nice. The moion soup was low on taste. Alot of cheese on top, hardly any onion in yge soup. A bit bland. The Wiener Schnitzel was pig, so Wiener Art. It was almost burned and dry. Sent it back. They made a new one, tasteless and tit was chucked on the plate, no veggies or salad. It is an offencr to a paying customer. Luckily I will eat at a Mixhelin Star restaurant tomorrow. Avoid this pkace it is bad. Many more restaurants in Hengelo.

What looked like a nice place turned out to be a culinary misconception. Bad food. Onion soup with little onion in the soup, a bit flat. Nice to have some cheese on the bowl. The wiener schnitzel was made from pig, so not wiener schnitzel, according to wiener art. The schnitzel was dry and almost burnt. After 1 bite to see if my eyes were wrong I returned. The potato gratin remained standing. After a while the second chance came, still dark (old fat?) meat, but more tender. Otherwise tasteless. The plate was missing a lot, no more vegetables, less filling on the schnitzel. I feel insulted as a paying customer. It is an experience what the chef put on the table the second time, prepare it well or choose another profession. That's not how you treat customers. I will advise my business customers in the region against this restaurant. And also the reader of this review. There are better restaurants here. Go there. You should not recommend this to anyone.

An evening meeting with colleagues, we didn't want to be far from the hotel. Quick choice for 3 meals - burger, ribs and steak. Absolutely great steak incl. vegetables and supplied sauces. The ribs are sometimes drier, but well seasoned. Unfortunately, my colleague had a cold burger. I appreciated the au gratin potatoes and fries as a standard meal. There was also coffee and a few desserts, all delicious. Beer well chilled. The service was prompt/pleasant. We left with the feeling of a pleasant dinner, I would be happy to come back here again.

Ongeïnteresseerde bediening die amper zichtbaar is. Je moet erg lang wachten voordat je bestelling wordt opgenomen en ook duurt het erg lang voordat het eten geserveerd wordt. De kwaliteit was altijd erg goed, maar deze ervaring was niet goed: lauwe schnitzel, lauwe aardappelgratin en een tournedos die koud van binnen was. Het duurde zeker 20 minuten voordat er iemand van het personeel gevraagd kon worden. Dit is de zoveelste keer dat de bediening te wensen over laat en wat er geserveerd werd, was schandalig. Na deze keer besloten om niet meer bij De Appel te komen.

The two of us had a bite to eat on a Saturday evening at De Appel in Hengelo. It was very busy on arrival, but a nice atmosphere. Inside the café and the covered and heated terrace look cozy. We started with prawns and baguette. Prawns were very tasty. Bread was the cheapest baguette you can buy in the supermarket, but the dips with it tasted good. As a main course we had surf and turf and a skewer. The meat and prawns tasted great, with some simple vegetables added. The pepper sauce had a slightly different taste, but in my opinion it could have been creamier. French fries and salad were also tasty. The potato gratin looked delicious, but we couldn't finish it anymore. Portion size was more than sufficient. Smooth and friendly service. We would love to come again :)
