A trendy restaurant just outside the city center. Unfortunately, our experience here wasn't anything to write home about. Several times, items on the menu were no longer available (salmon, pan-fried potatoes, chocolate fondue), or a certain beer wasn't chilled. The service was initially friendly, until the owner arrived at our table later that evening. He said we would be disappointed that some items were no longer available. However, we never complained directly to the staff. He told us that it could happen that items were no longer available because they buy fresh produce every day to prevent waste. This is understandable with salmon, but we think every restaurant should stock potatoes, chocolate, cookies, and some fruit. We suggested that guests inform them in advance if menu items were no longer available, as this would prevent disappointment when ordering. However, the gentleman took this constructive criticism as offensive. We eventually received desserts on the house for the inconvenience, but this encounter with the owner at our table worsened rather than improved our experience. The food quality varied. The pan-fried pork belly appetizer was delicious. However, the ribeye main course was very subpar. The meat quality was very poor, with lots of tendons, tough pieces, and sinew that still needed to be trimmed away. The fries and desserts were excellent. Filthy, festival-like restrooms in a separate building. We won't be returning!

Not cheap, but you definitely get your money's worth.

Great food, good quality and bite. Finally a place where you can order rare steak with confidence. Vegetables perfectly cooked, pepper sauce could be a bit more peppery and deeper in flavor.

This is a particularly nice address. Completely up-to-date. Delicious original food, fine beer and a cosy terrace. Inside it looks fantastic, but the weather was so good that we could eat outside.

What a terribly nice tent! Really very cozy, fires everywhere and atmosphere, somewhat similar to the restaurants I encountered in South Africa, nice alternative but man, what delicious food. A relief if you want something different from the usual places in the city. Highly recommended!

We have been here twice now, once for lunch and once for dinner. Both times surprised by good price-quality ratio and good portions. I have never tasted such tender short ribs. On top of that there is a cozy informal atmosphere with friendly service and owners. Nice hidden gem!

Very pleasantly surprised on Saturday by this very cozy and high-quality restaurant/bistro. Beforehand, my partner had escargots and I had prawns. Attention had been paid to both and tasted pure despite the garlic. As true meat lovers, we opted for the dry aged ribeye for the main course. These were cooked perfectly and the pepper sauce was not overpowering. They were served rare. Which is fine by both of us. I can imagine that not everyone wants them cooked strangely. Maybe they should just ask how the ribeye should be cooked. What I found very pleasant was the friendly and knowledgeable service. We also appreciated the question of how long we had to wait for the main course. In our opinion, price-quality was absolutely top, hence 5 stars.

What a surprise 😃 I had already heard a lot of good things about the Kolenmeesters but my expectations were certainly exceeded. The food was excellent and the atmosphere was also very pleasant. Also a big compliment to the ladies in the service. I'll definitely be back.

Very special location, don't forget a jacket in cold weather. They do have patio heating. Was nice to see and eat here. Food is made on a kind of BBQ, and is tasty and highly recommended.

Creative tent that you have to love. It seems a bit alternative and cold, both in terms of atmosphere and temperature. We were allowed to go outside to a not so fresh festival toilet, just to mention it. Staff was very nice and attentive, unfortunately the kitchen took quite some time but we were in no rush. Quality of food was excellent in relation to a decent price. It rightly calls itself “the Coal Master”. A suitable tent for a group of men or colleagues, but for a romantic evening I would look further.

We came in without a reservation. And wanted to eat vegetarian. That had to be arranged. We are very pleasantly surprised with a "shared platter". Excellent food. There is much more possible than what is on the menu. Just ask. Friendly and attentive service too.

Today we are here for the second time in two weeks because it is so wonderful and the atmosphere is friendly. First started with drinks and then dinner. It's really enjoy the food and the atmosphere. (haha and while you're sitting there, a famous Dutchman comes in, Guido Weijers)😃

I walked past here often not knowing that they also serve food here, but out of curiosity I went in and ordered something. Well well well...I have never eaten such delicious meat, the chef is approachable and a nice guy. He can tell you everything about meat and you notice that the owners have a good vibe because it is also palpable among the staff. This place is truly a gem and I'm glad I discovered it!

One of the best (probably the best) BBQ restaurant I have ever eaten at. A top place for both private and business purposes with good food, many different types of beers and friendly service!

How fantastic! Been here for the first time with our colleagues. At first we were like, where are we going to end up, but don't let that confuse you. The food was good, the service was good. One of us had a number of allergies and the chef himself came to the table to discuss it, which was really great! We come here often! We also have a Brasserie ourselves and know how important service is, well they know that here too! Great, see you next time😉

Delicious food in a wonderful atmosphere

A gem on the Veilingkade in Breda. The building fits seamlessly into the somewhat alternative 'Stek', as the area is called. Don't be distracted by the somewhat messy-looking interior (but cozy), because this is simply a professionally run restaurant with a very pleasant price/quality. We went for the chef's 4-course menu (€42.50). There was room for that tonight (because sometimes too busy to offer this), and we enjoyed it. The real hit was the buttery tender tournedos weighing at least 400g.

Delicious food in an informal atmosphere in a place you wouldn't expect. Grill/bbq dishes are really just good. Recommended!

Heerlijk gegeten, met aandacht van de kok voor de glutenintolerantie. Dat bleek geen probleem voor chef Thuan, een heelijk plateau werd ons voorgezet waarbij de bavette en rib-eye er voor ons bovenuit staken. Kolenmeesters is een aanrader voor lekker eten van de bbq en wij gaan zeker hier nog vaker komen. Ik heb persoonlijk ook erg genoten van de blije gezichten van onze kinderen die toch enigszins uit hun comfortzone besteld hebben, maar de short ribs en de zalm heel erg lekker vonden. Oh ja, de huisgemaakte friet en smashed potatoes mogen ook zeker niet ontbreken naast het hoofdgerecht. Deze moeten wel apart bijbesteld worden, maar wij hadden aan 2x friet en 1x aardappelen (naast de ruime porties van het hoofdgerecht) voldoende met 3 grote eters (van de 4). Tot slot nog een toetje (crème brulee en iets met ananas) genoten dat met veel zorg was bereid zeer goed van smaak was en ook weer ruim geportioneerd was.

What a positive experience, we had never been to Stek before, so not to De Kolenmeesters either. Stepped out of our comfort zone....but what delicious food you can eat there, meat perfectly prepared, dishes very tasty. The atmosphere is very relaxed, the environment extremely inspiring and the service pleasant, respectful and good. This restaurant will definitely be on our favorite list. A wonderful restaurant, hidden away in central Breda. The staff and owner are very friendly, helpful and attentive. The food is delicious - we had a platter to share and it was beyond tasty. Would highly recommend de Kolenmeesters to anyone looking for a great meal and welcoming atmosphere.

Had a great meal here with friends, large portions and really tasty, freshly prepared. The chef personally came to talk to a friend about an allergy at the table and really did his best to put something delicious on the table for her. Cozy ambiance in a special location. All in all, we had a nice meal (before/main/after) and certainly left without feeling hungry and feeling satisfied! Recommended if you are looking for something fun in Breda!

Very tasty food in an authentic, casual atmosphere. Friendly service, hospitable and a great sense of timing, drinks, starters, main courses and desserts at exactly the right time in between. The grilled food, that's what it's all about here, was perfect. Nice portions, very good meat and fish. Recommended, we go there more often.

I can say that this restaurant was an incredibly pleasant surprise. We ordered a 4 course dinner with a group and it was really great. We started with beef tartare and the taste was sublime. Then salad with seaweed and salmon sashimi, with soya-sesame dressing and it was finger licking good. Then short ribs that were extremely tender and finally a crème brulée. The restaurant interior is a kind of mishmash of everything and that is quite pleasant, but perhaps less so for snobs. It doesn't bother me, but it won't be to everyone's taste. I think what you get on your plate is the most important. What you get served here is really of an excellent standard. I left there really happy. The wait for each course also went smoothly.

Food is mediocre, steaks are not that good quality and are cooked poorly. Odd sides for steaks, charred carrots and beetroots (?). Pay a bit extra and have proper steaks at Rodeo or Con Fuego.

Delicious food for a good price, good portions. One of the best in Breda. Also good service, friendly service, and tasty juice punch on tap 👍🏼 in the summer you can sit outside on the terrace, in the winter it can be a bit cold. Have been here several times and will definitely come back!

2 of us went there mid week evening, got table straight away. Staff was helpful and everyone speaks English well even though menu is in Dutch only. The.place is set up like a ristic barn. Food was delicious and made with care and pride. Prices was very reasonable and generous portion so you don't still feel hungry afterwards. The key though, was that it was made really nice, tasted great. Roast 1/2 chicken was good size for one, which came with chips and roasted veg, so tender, not dry inside and crisp outside. My short ribs tasted great and tender, ok size too, came with roasted veg. Would be nice with small amount of chips, but it's only minor. Overall, we would definitely go back again in support of such an independent, excellent restaurant.

Wat een aangename verrassing! We hadden alle 4 de chefs special. Heerlijk de Chef kwam eerst even vragen of er echt geen dingen waren die we niet luste. Daar na 4 heerlijke gerechten gehad waar we onze vingers bij hebben afgelikt. Dit alles met een paar lekkere biertjes en een heerlijk glaasje roden wijn bij de tomahawk steak. Echt een aanrader super sfeer en super eten!

This is my favorite place in Breda from now on. Great kitchen, relaxing atmosphere, friendly staff. There's nothing to find fault with.

Crappy restaurant. Booked well in advance but had no room, so nice. No solution either. Worthless . Never again.

Found this place thanks to the reviews on Google. Reserved online at 6pm (reservations are highly recommended and are very easy to do online). There is a paying parking lot (another review states free parking, but it is actually paying until 8 p.m.: about 1.5 euros per hour). The parking lot is to the right of the entrance to the restaurant, it is better not to drive onto the property itself. When we arrived at 6pm it was still chilly inside. We were given a table right next to the entrance. Because I had the impression that it was a bit chilly, I asked for another table. However, there was only one table available in 'the smallest café in the port', a super cozy area at the back of the restaurant, but only with standing tables. Still opted for the table near the door. And I felt that. Every time people came in I got a gust of cold wind (outside temperature just below freezing). This was a big negative of the evening. The virgin Mojito was appealing as an alcohol-free aperitif, but the cost (10.50 euros) was too high for an alcohol-free drink. Ordered the sharing platter with 2 people. 2 types of meat were super tasty. I would choose this dish again for that reason alone. The disadvantage is that the dish was not heated and the 2 other types of meat were just cold after half way (not even lukewarm anymore). A significant drawback that can easily be solved by heating the dish in advance. So some mixed feelings after the visit. Super charming place, very friendly service, yet on the more expensive side, cold inside, cold meat.

Incidentally ended up here because of a visit to Breda for an event. Upon arrival we were welcomed by friendly staff in a cozy atmosphere. We opted for the shared platter, since there were two of us, but we did have some questions. The person I was having dinner with is intolerant to a fair number of spices and cannot tolerate spicy food due to a medical condition. When we indicated this, the chef personally spoke to us and did everything he could to adjust the plate so that we could both enjoy it. But it went one step further, the dessert had a spicy bite, which was not mentioned on the menu. The chef noticed that we had both ordered this and came to us to inform us. And even though it was indicated that this one person wanted to order something different, the chef insisted on adjusting the dessert for him so that it was not spicy. This was really service of the highest level and the food was also very tasty. It is clearly noticeable that they know what they are doing with their grill and the meat on it. It is highly recommended and I will definitely eat here again when I am in the area again. Thank you again for the good care and the delicious food!

Wow, had dinner here for the first time today for my birthday. From the moment we walked in we were greeted and helped very friendly and enthusiastically. The atmosphere is fantastic, nice music and you can tell that the staff enjoy working here, very nice! To my surprise, shared platter could also be ordered vegetarian and wow, that was really a party on a platter. So tasty, so surprising, delicious flavors and combinations that you would not easily think of. Main courses were also delicious, you really notice that talented chefs work here, with knowledge of food and an enormous passion for their profession. Meat, fish, vegetarian and vegan, it was all possible! Had a really wonderful birthday. Thank you very much for the hospitality 😊

Heerlijk gegeten, goede bediening ook

Erg leuke sfeer en heerlijk gegeten. Personeel was top!

Geweldige sfeer, mede door de uitstekende bediening en het eten is fantastisch! Ik kom hier zeker vaker!

Hele sfeervolle locatie. Ook een "alternatieve" en creatieve/vrijdenkende locatie bij STEK. Daardoor juist nog meer positief verrast door hier zo'n goede keuken te vinden. Een typisch voorbeeld van Serendipity, een ongezochte waardevolle vondst. Het eten, een confit de Canard en een hertenbiefstuk waren allebei heerlijk en voorzien van een lekker sausje. Groente geroosterde biet en pompoen (heerlijk) en daarbij allebei een ruim schaaltje romige aardappelpuree met kaas uit de oven. We waren begonnen met een bokbiertje van Frontaal en hebben er bij het eten nog een genomen. Past prima. Nou ja, alleen maar goed nieuws? Ja. De dame die ons hielp kon je een heel leuk gesprek mee voeren en met de sympathieke kok ook. Wij heel blij dat we dit restaurant gevonden hebben. Komen zeker snel terug. Jeroen

Superleuk gasten en zo gastvrij. Echt voor iedereen een aanrader.

Met een groep meiden wezen eten; shared dining van vlees en vis, alles keurig bereid, verrassende smaken zoals het dessert van gegrilde ananas die pittig gekruid was. Goede service, geen wens is te gek, er wordt goed meegedacht. Echte aanrader, ook de visie erachter en zeker de plek. Wij gaan terukomen!!

Leuke plek en zeer aardige bediening. Qua eten wat minder. Tot onze verbazing was er ook pizza. Deze stond niet op de kaart, maar werd het meeste besteld. Het vlees wat we hadden besteld was koud. En de dorade was aan de buitenkant zwart. De frietjes waren slap en vettig. Voor ons was de prijs kwaliteit verhouding niet okay. Als we hier een pizza hadden besteld was het misschien beter geweest.

Heerlijk gegeten! Vriendelijk personeel. Leuk dat de chef aan tafel kwam om het menu door te nemen. Voor het stoofpotje met Frontaal bier kom ik zeker terug! Aanrader.

Heerlijk eten in een ontspannen sfeer op een bijzondere locatie mét live-muziek! Op een, voor zover het NL klimaat het toelaat, best aardige zomeravond zijn we bij de Kolenmeesters gaan eten. Er hangt een heerlijk ontspannen sfeer alsof je bij vrienden komt eten. De geuren van BBQ en grill hangen er al in de lucht en het eten smaakt naar meer. De bijzondere gegrilde groenten complimenteerden het prachtig bereide vlees en vis op de “shared platter” die wij voor ons gezelschap op tafel lieten komen. Heerlijke drankjes en een zalig toetje maakten het helemaal af. En alsof dat nog niet genoeg was, was er die avond ook nog een lekkere partij live-muziek waarbij het toegejuicht werd om mee te komen spelen op het podium. Al met al een heerlijke (en) ontspannen avond gehad. Een absolute aanrader!

Laat je verrassen door het eten dat je hier niet verwacht. In een Relaxte sfeer in het restaurant maken de chefs en bediening er een culinaire ervaring van. Aanrader is shared dining (voor 2) van de chef. Dit kan steeds (naar je wens) anders zijn dus het is aan te raden om even te overleggen.

Gezellige en urban setting bij het water of natuurlijk in de loods. Ruime keuze aan gerechten, voor snelle bites bij een bijpassend biertje of voor een aantal gangen is er keuze genoeg. Mocht je van alle gerechten niet kunnen kiezen dan kun je altijd bij de een van de chefs nog vragen voor het “chefs platter”. Zij maken dan een platter voor je, uiteraard met de wensen voor de verhouding vis/vlees of vega.

Oh man, I love eating here. A few weeks ago I had Surf'n'Turf, today it was roti, my partner ordered ribeye and we had some delicious dessert. The food is simple but very hearty, the price to quality ratio is better than anywhere else that I've been. Brilliant meat (I'm a weakling and can't chew most steaks, here it's not a problem), yummy veggies, really friendly staff. Such a nice place!

Als voormalige "Op Hete Kolen" hebben de mannen van “de Kolenmeesters” bewezen dat ze weten wat ze doen als het gaat om BBQ. Door het daverende succes van hun keuken in het bierproeflokaal "BRACK", hebben ze nu een eigen locatie waar ze hun geweldige grillkunsten aan u kunnen tonen. Kortom, als u een liefhebber bent van gegrild eten en op zoek bent naar een geweldige culinaire ervaring, dan moet u zeker een bezoek brengen aan De Kolenmeesters. Deeld de locatie met Brack. Aperitieven met voor mij een black Sabbath 10%. En de vrouw een blonde Balmobeer van 6,5%. Van de gelegenheid gebruik gemaakt om chickenwings te verorberen. In een oude hangar met een terras buiten. Meubels lokaal gefabriceerd. Bar is een samenwerking tussen 2 brouwers. Bliksem en Ramses.
