Pretty disappointing. Waitstaff were professional and charming but the service was extremely slow, even though the restaurant was barely a third full. We were seated at about 6:20 and didn’t leave until 8:45. This caused us to miss a performance we had tickets to, despite telling the waiter at about 8:10 that we’d need to move things along in the set menu we ordered. The dishes themselves were a bit uneven. A beetroot appetizer was a quite nice, and the mushroom soup that followed was unmemorable but tasty. A fish dish was rather bland and very tiny, while the duck that came later was surprisingly large by comparison, lukewarm, and not very well prepared—mine had a lot of gristly connective tissue. All the dishes over-relied on multiple sauces, which felt a bit dated and fussy. I was dying for an uncooked herb or fresh green vegetable. I do appreciate the effort that this restaurant clearly makes and its obvious pride for its wonderful history, but unfortunately it didn’t manage to deliver a great experience on the night I visited.

We were initially drawn in by the logo at the entrance the flying silver bee which immediately gave the impression of a place with a long history. The building itself dates back to 1623, while the restaurant was established in 1923 together with the hotel. Inside, the atmosphere feels very vintage, almost like dining inside a museum. We were especially lucky with our service that day: our server was extremely polite, knowledgeable, and took the time to introduce each dish after it was served. The service felt warm and genuinely professional. The price is slightly on the higher side, but considering the historical setting and the overall standard of the restaurant, it feels reasonable. We ordered the five course chef’s menu and were absolutely full by the end very, very full. The food itself was solid and comforting rather than surprising. Nothing overly mind-blowing, but it felt pleasant and cozy to dine in such an environment. One highlight worth mentioning is the bread it was especially fragrant and delicious that day (though I might have been extra hungry). The restaurant is very clean and well maintained. The kitchen is half open and appears highly organized, and the restrooms are also kept spotless, meeting the expectations of a high standard restaurant. Overall, the flavors are above average. If you’re spending a couple of days in this area, it’s a restaurant worth considering for one meal.

Quite the tourist trap. Nice concept, and the ambience is there. But the food does not live up to the prices. (For me: Cured fish not fully cured and badly deboned, pork belly overcooked and dry, service not that interested in your experience.)

The restaurant is not the easiest to find as the windows face the street on the opposite side of the location, but pointing to the entrance in the alley helps. Friendly service, good food and ice cold beer.

We did a set menu with a large group and the atmosphere was very charming and cozy and great service. For food the soup was great, but the fish dish main was very salty (and the consensus from the group) and over sauced and the dessert plate of little bites was not good either unfortunately.

The food was actually quite ordinary, neither refined nor particularly delicious. The fish fillet even had scales that hadn't been properly scraped off, indicating a lack of meticulous preparation. Furthermore, the female server at the main entrance in the alley was extremely rude. Despite knowing it was pouring rain outside and knowing where we were, and carrying large bags, she insisted we enter through a different door. It's questionable that the restaurant owner hired such a staff member. I would have only given one star initially, but I'm giving two because the server who served us was quite friendly. However, I would not recommend it and it's not worth going.

The dining room is superb. The service is a bit over the top. The dishes are good but sorely lacking in sides. You'll also discover unexpected prices, like water and an expression at 7 euros. A restaurant with truly exorbitant prices.

We booked this restaurant as part of a tour group. When it was time to enter, an older female server refused to let us in, insisting we enter through a side door. We ended up having to ask the tour leader to lead us in. The food was okay, but not particularly delicious. My initial impression was so bad that I will never return.

Simply divine!! This place is a treat. Not only is each room full of antiques, books and charm the food is to die for. I did the wine and food pairing and wow!! Being a South African I take my wine seriously so imagine my surprise at the Netherlands wine selection. As for the food, 5 courses of the most delish food combinations I’ve ever eaten. Our host was darn charming, witty and pre-empted my needs. This venue has to be on your to do list when visiting Amsterdam. Oh, and the chairs have been labeled with famous people who sat and ate there. Ps… are the oysters before taking a pic 😏

Very nice atmosphere in old Dutch style (my daughter described it as a medieval Dutch tavern :-)) the restaurant was a recomendation from my Dutch colleague as a fancy place in Dutch styled food - with a question mark if it’s worth the money - well I think so - ambience great; food - we went for chef menus - nice sequence - starter (trio beetroot), pumpkin soup with creamy espuma, zander, pork belly in Madeira sauce and Dutch cheese board, tick custard based desert. Each dish was good overall and each had a nice component(s) in it although - as many reviewers compared this restaurant to Michelin starred - I was missing a bit of wow factor of taste combos; very decent food still even at its price - zander being my favourite + good sized portions for tasting menu as well. Services was kind uncomplicated and helpful - restaurant could do with few more waiters - we had to wait to order more drinks a bit. Over all Recommended !

We have visted mutliple times on our visits to Amsteram as my mother highly recommends it. The food is great and so is the location, setting, atmosphere and service. Each time we have gone for a tasting menu with wine as we feel it offers a bit more of a luxury experience and something you dont get everywhere. We would highly recommend a visit here to anyone.

We were here with our group for a conference. A delicious three-course meal, and a super friendly and quick-witted waitress contributed to a successful evening.

Absolutely amazing. The ambience and atmosphere of the restaurant is delightful- it is like dining in a piece of living history. On top of that the food was phenomenal and so reasonably priced. We went for the surprise 5 course set menu and we loved every course. They accomodated my dairy allergy with ease. The waiter was knowledgeable and very helpful. We will definitely be returning on our next visit to Amsterdam. I cannot recommend highly enough.

This was one of the best dining experiences I've ever had. We had some of the best food either of us had ever eaten. They are right this isn't a restaurant it's a culinary museum. The decor is antique and amazing. Our server Ahmed was fantastic, he took phenomenal care of us. Splurge and get the 6 course dinner you won't regret it. If you're a wine drinker the wine pairings are excellent.

We recently had the pleasure of celebrating our 50th wedding anniversary at Restaurant d’Vijff Vlieghen in Amsterdam. We were seated at a wonderful, historic table and treated with friendly and impeccable service. The food was wonderfully prepared and presented, representing one of the finest meals that we experienced during our 35-day tour of various European destinations. We send our thanks and best wishes to the service and kitchen staff, with hopes of a return visit in the future.

A lovely Amsterdam restaurant with truly delicious food, but service intervals can be a bit long. Given the good service and food, we had to wait, but it was worth it. It's a place you won't be ashamed to take Vedat Milör to.

The restaurant has a cozy atmosphere and the food is quite good for Dutch cuisine. However, I only gave 3 stars because the service was extremely slow. We were a group of four with a reservation, yet we ended up waiting around 40-50 minutes between our starter and main course. It seemed like they might have been understaffed that day, which could explain the delays, but it would have been much better if the staff had informed us about the situation. Instead, I had to go and find someone to ask about our food. Also I notice the table behind us arrived later buy ended up getting main plate earlier before us even though we had finisher our starters quite a while

I always enjoy going to this restaurant which, to me, is rather an experience than just a top quality meal. The staff here are always welcoming and professional and very accommodating. As for the surroundings, the five 17th century canal houses that create this restaurant are stunning. The food is always amazing and just a bit different... in a very good way.

A very beautiful and characteristic place; one of the oldest in Amsterdam. The staff is very friendly and professional. The prices are very high for the dishes offered. The soup is excellent. We were unlucky enough to order the pork. The staff had warned us it was fatty, but hadn't told us it was just fat. Basically, what we'd throw away in Italy is offered here for 28 euros. A dish to avoid.

Food was solid but we had a pretty bad booking experience here. We accidentally reserved for the wrong day and as soon as we realized our mistake, called the restaurant to let them know and book the the correct date. However, at the end of the visit, we were surprised that the restaurant refused to credit us the deposit we'd put down for the initial booking. Although that was within their rights, we were disappointed in their deceptiveness. When we were on the phone with the restaurant to book the new date, they made it seem like we would be credited the deposit since it was a genuine mistake and we really had every intention of making our reservation. Disappointing end to our visit, really left us with a bad feeling and felt like they'd intentionally misled us.

Amazing night out. The food was inventive and delicious. Service was with Gaia and was impeccable. The restaurant is very special. Can't recommend highly enough.

What a lovely evening! A beautiful building with so much history, and simply excellent food. A relaxed atmosphere, though we sometimes had to ask for a new bottle of water, cutlery, or the wine from the package after the food had already arrived... but who cares when you have such a great host like Achmed! A truly lovely guy, fantastic!!! And how special it is to hold the guest books from 1987!... but they're also available from 1949. I would recommend everyone to have a bite to eat here, especially to soak up the atmosphere and soak up the history!

The raw beef, pork and snow fish were all very delicious. The service staff was very friendly. The red wine we ordered was Dutch and it was also very good. It was a delicious meal, and most importantly, it was to celebrate my wife's birthday.

It is a very charming and atmospheric restaurant in Amsterdam. It takes you back in time and you can imagine how things had been a couple of centures ago. The restaurant is known for a very good food quality, and rightly so. I must also point out a very friendly service. I went for an a la carte menu and I had a seasonal leek soup. This soup was smooth, creamy and very light. It was also well balanced in terms of proportions of salt and spices 5 * However, would give 4 points to my main dish. I found the fish a bit too oily and vegetables accompanying it quite salty. The desert , lychee parfait, was very good, I would definitely come back here to try out a tasting menu.

A deplorable welcome! The three of us arrived without a reservation and simply stepped over the floor markings to approach the only person present. His reaction was astonishingly abrupt, in an outrageously unpleasant tone, as if we had committed a serious offense. A few minutes later, seeing that no one was returning to us, we politely asked a server if he could tell us if a table was available. His response was curt and condescending: "No, it's not my place to give you that information. Please wait." Faced with such a lack of consideration and manners, we decided to leave. An establishment that so completely forgets that the welcome is the first impression given to the customer unfortunately inspires no desire to return.

A historic Amsterdam restaurant, very beautiful inside and very friendly staff (they don't speak Italian). The food is beautifully presented and uses unique combinations (like a Michelin-starred restaurant, so to speak). The portions are really small, so I recommend the 3, 4, or 5-course tasting menu. You'll leave feeling quite full. The price is a downside: it's expensive! But you can go for once. Recommended.

I usually don’t write reviews, but I feel compelled to share the frustrating experience we had here. First, I was surprised to learn that they don't allow tap water. Instead, if you don't order alcohol, you're forced to get a bottle of still water for €7. We had no such problem with other high-quality restaurants in Amsterdam. Additionally, they put out an advertisement for an early bird two-course menu in front of their restaurant. However, when we were seated, the staff didn't mention this option until we asked. Even then, we were met with attitude—frowning and menus being thrown back into the menu pile. When our main courses arrived, they were served cold on cold plates, which was amateurish for a restaurant with such a historic reputation. We returned the dishes and expressed our concerns about the food and the rude staff, but the manager was defensive and offered no apology. The remade main courses were hot, but the seasoning was overly salty. We opted to keep them, as we didn't want to deal with any further issues. It's disheartening to see such poor service and food quality at a historic place. Honestly, this was the worst dining experience we had in Amsterdam. If they treat customers who order the less expensive menu with visible rudeness, they shouldn't even offer it. Overall, the experience did not live up to its reputation.

A very old and perfectly preserved restaurant. We wandered through the many rooms to discover every detail. The atmosphere takes you back in time. The service was impeccable. The quality of the dishes was excellent, although the quality was a little poor, but that's normal for this price range. There was a small mistake on the bill, which we only noticed after leaving... I'm mentioning this because it's the third time this has happened to me in Amsterdam...

The food is very good, the tasting is interesting and varied. Traditional Dutch cuisine. The restaurant is very beautiful, it looks like a museum. The only problem is the service time; a 20-30 minute wait between each course doesn't seem acceptable to me for a restaurant of this caliber.

The food started off shaky but got better with each course First they offered bread for the table, and what they brought out was one single solitary kaiser roll (for 2 people to share) L, not fresh baked, it was like the ones from Albert Heijn (that's probably exactly what it was) and it was completely stale. Seriously it was as hard as a rock. I couldn't even get a knife through it. Then a beetroot starter which was... Fine. Nothing special. But from there on everything was great. There was a soup course, amazing, then a codfish course, wonderful, then dessert which was terrific. All extremely delicious. Great service. Top notch Old Fashioneds. It all got better as it went along. Sadly the dampener on the whole thing was when I got the bill and just as I was about to leave a generous tip I saw that we'd been charged ELEVEN EUROS for that single lonely kaiser roll that was like a block of concrete. Not fresh baked but clearly a cheap supermarket thing. That was two portions we'd been charged for! How the heck can one AH kaiser roll be two portions? So if there was only one person would they have brought half a roll? Well they lost the tip and they turned a potential happy customer who would've recommended them into a grumpy guy ranting in the office the next day about bloody kaiser rolls 😂

Excellent 5-course dinner. Yes, the price is quite high, but the taste of this journey of discovery is incredible!! Thank you for this beautiful evening and these taste discoveries, all in a traditional, old-fashioned setting that breathes history!!

The place looks great so I walked in to try my luck to book the table for next day….i don’t know about the food but the waiter/manager at the entrance got serious attitude issue….. I asked if I can book a table for tomorrow and got a very cold and arrogant reply you can book online… No matter how popular you are … It’s such a turn off….

This restaurant was an absolute delight. Walking in felt like stepping onto a film set — the interior is more like a living museum, transporting you to another era entirely. We opted for the tasting menu, and the service was impeccable. The staff thoughtfully guided us through each course, sharing the story and inspiration behind every dish. The first course was a celebration of beetroot, presented in a variety of creative preparations. Other highlights included a delicate soup with crème fraîche floating elegantly in the centre, and a beautifully cooked beef dish served with some of the most indulgent potatoes I’ve ever had. Yes, it’s on the pricey side — but every cent felt justified for such a carefully curated and memorable experience.

Simply outstanding! I recently discovered this hidden treasure in the center of Amsterdam and I cannot stop talking about it since. What an unforgetable experience! A Museum - restaurant where you might be seated on the chair where once sat Bruce Springsteen or Julio Iglesias or others like them. Every piece of furniture, every ornament has a glorious history and a story to tell. Our congratulations to the chefs that spoiled us with delicious food and warms thanks to the welcoming staff! this is not a restaurant at all, but a museum with very tasty food and a good selection of wine. there are several originals of Rembrandt in the establishment, think about it!!! this is a very beautiful establishment, very large with several different halls, as an addition a Michelin star! I highly recommend it, the best place in Amsterdam

A most unique restaurant in a unique setting. A perfect combination. The food is exceptional with high-end flavors and techniques. The staff is highly professional and welcoming and was especially attentive to our food allergy needs. I actually ate here about 22 years ago and I am happy to share that the restaurant certainly maintained its qualities over the years. Will certainly come back next time I am in Amsterdam.

My wife and I ate here last week, and it was a great experience. The food was outstanding, the atmosphere—a room full of antique military equipment—was fascinating, and the service was truly excellent—the main server (Liliana?) was knowledgeable and attentive without being obtrusive. This is a nice restaurant with an almost 100-yr history, tons of antiques on display, and even a guest book signed by several famous people. Our waiter Ahmed was extremely entertaining with great stories, tasting of wines before selecting a glass, and a good sense of humor. Food was tasty although portion sizes are modest. Our family of six enjoyed our meal here!

We had a great experience! The old building gives an amazing atmosphere. The service was welcoming and fun. Ahmed helped us, providing information about the dishes or sharing a joke to make us laugh. And the food itself was very tastful. Simple ingredients prepared and combined to spike the senses. Great possibility we will come back!

We have been wanting to visit the 5 Flies restaurant AMS for some time now. Finally got to have dinner on 12th June 2025 online booking for 1730 made. Opted for the a la carte 3 course and selected Poultry Terrine, Fish of the Day ( Wolf Fish - similar to cod) and Lemon Curd for the Dessert. Plus 2 glasses of Rose Dutch Sparkling Wine, which came as a a pleasant surprise :0) The atmosphere was very special due to the history of the restaurant. We had a window table facing Spuistraat. Terrific food with many delicious flavors. We shared the fish of the day (wolfish) and an eggplant dish that was also tasty. The atmosphere is incredible with wonderful dark rooms with candlelight tables. The restaurant is comprised of six or so rooms from an old house or houses. The only reason I can’t give this place a five is our server. Not good. Just didn’t seem to take a liking to us. It seemed. I asked for a recommendation for a wine that would pair well with what we were getting (usually something that servers are happy to do) but she just waved me off and said here’s the wine list. You can choose anything you want from the many wines. Forgetting the bread until the meal was half over is something that can happen anywhere, but the topper was when the bill came and she asked if she should add a gratuity while staring me in the eyes. It was awkward, but I gave a number which she then incorrectly added to the bill, giving herself an additional euro (too little for me to point out). We were thinking of going back to this restaurant in a couple days, but will likely not do so because of the server. Unfortunate, but if you get on her good side (or get another server although it’s a small place and I only saw two of them), I’m sure it’ll be especially nice experience.

4-course meal. The appetizer is salmon salad with bread. The main course is beef stew with a large portion. The thick soup is rich and smooth. The last dish is ice cream with frosted donuts, which is very special!

This is my second time to this wonderful, quaint restaurant. The first was 20 years ago when a Dutch colleague recommended we go. Nothing has changed in 20 years for this restaurant built in the 1600’s. It’s like walking back in time to enjoy a fine meal. I highly recommend.

We visited with our family of eight having been there as a couple about 15 years ago. It did not disappoint! We had the tasting menu with wine pairing and it was delicious. The service was excellent and the staff friendly and funny. It is very unique with the history of the building and the famous people who have dined there. Truly an enjoyable way to spend an evening in Amsterdam.

Located in a 1,600-square-foot building. Very pleasant Dutch food. Small but exquisite portions. Highly recommended.

High-end restaurant, reservation required, old house

We celebrated my birthday at Five Flies when we were in Amsterdam this month and it was a wonderful evening. The restaurant is composed of five adjoining canal houses in the heart of Amsterdam and each room is warm, unique, quirky and historical. The staff was friendly and helpful and provided insightful explanations about the origins of the restaurant and the interior furnishings. The French cuisine was very good and the prices were reasonable. What a fun experience in Amsterdam!
