My wife and I returned to this fantastic restaurant for another anniversary celebration. Not the cheapest restaurant however you get what you pay for, quality food well presented and a very attentive, polite staff. The restaurant is quirky and steeped in history. A fantastic venue for a romantic dinner.

Absolutely loved our experience at Five Flies, a wonderful old world restaurant right on the canal, so full of history and ambience. 3 of us went to celebrate our 70th birthday year together with friends, and the Maitre D Sander made us feel as though we were the only people in the restaurant. Quite a feat since it can seat 240! There were so many little rooms, nooks and crannies which we enjoyed exploring. Food and wine were great, but the service made it very special. An overall wonderful memory made there for 3 old friends, thanks so much Sander!

This formerly good restaurant was taken over by private equity/ hedge fund bros and now is basically inedible. The bread plate was the only good food. The service was abysmally slow. The food sucked. The Rembrandt drawings are all gone, sold or in the hedge fund guys’ offices. We are very sad to see what has happened to this restaurant. We used to come every time we visited the city and enjoyed eating while looking at the Rembrandt drawings very much. Now, the tour groups flock to this place to eat an overpriced subpar meal. Shame on you, new owners! We used to love this place :(

Loved the unique ambience, the food was amazing especially all the vegetables - leeks, potatoes etc that came with the meat and fish dishes, and most importantly the service was super amazing, made my 5 year feel very welcome. Overall highly recommend visiting if you are in Amsterdam

My unprofessional review of the dishes (personal impressions) is as follows: 1. The soup was hard to understand; it tasted very much like angelica root soup, with a strong angelica root flavor. (It actually seemed to be made from vegetables and herbs.) 2. The fish main course was delicious! 3. The dessert had a very Dutch style; white chocolate shaped like clogs, served with Dutch scones, homemade sauce, and ice cream—delicious! Overall, the food was good except for the soup. The old-fashioned architectural atmosphere was the biggest highlight.

Despite its truly beautiful setting, the restaurant fails to live up to its high standards. The main course of meat and gratin was lukewarm. It had obviously been sitting at the counter for too long before being picked up. The ice cream for dessert was almost completely melted. The service seemed too slow, even though the restaurant wasn't particularly busy. There were long waits between courses. We ordered a set menu that, visually, attempted to match the excellent cuisine. However, the food lacked flavor, the wait times were too long, and staff persistently ignored plates that needed clearing. Even the appetizer plate remained on the table for several courses, and this restaurant has clearly never heard of an amuse-bouche.

We had a great evening, stunning place with more history and character you can dream off. Great food and 11/10 hospitality.

Absolutely not worth the money. I took 4 course menu and the food was very mediocre. The atmosphere however was very charming and interesting. Overall, I would not recommend, at least the set menu.

Was a really amazing night and experience. The food was delicious and hospitality just perfect. We have a really amazing night even have the opportunity to get to know more about the history of the restaurant. For sure a place that I would really love to visit again and recommend.

We went to this restaurant based on a recommendation from a a good friend of ours. Walking in made you think of walking back in time a few centuries! We were promptly greeted by the host/manager/sommelier. I'm not sure what his exact role was but he performed all three expertly! From start to finish our experience (and it was an experience) was excellent. The food was excellent with all the items we ordered and had fun pairing up one of the choices with a Norwegian white wine that was offered by the glass (I can't remember the varietal) that was surprisingly good! Anyhow I'd say this would be a don't miss if you're in Amsterdam, like historical buildings, want good food and excellent service.

A superb experience! We came for my father's 80th birthday, a very successful and special occasion. The setting is tavern-style and unique, very welcoming. The food was delicious and flavorful. We thoroughly enjoyed it. The staff is very friendly, warm, and attentive.

We ate here on our first trip to Europe in 1984 and we have very fond memories. Happy to report that it's still wonderful. Every course was beautiful and intensely flavorful and the service was helpful and could not have been better. And the cheeses! Perfect evening.

A very atmospheric restaurant. The staff were very welcoming and gave us a tour of their various themed dining areas, such as the Rembrandt Room and the Knights Room. During the tour, we learned that the founder of Disney drew a picture in the guestbook after dining there, but it was unfortunately stolen. The Rembrandt Room originally housed his original work, but due to high maintenance costs, it was moved to a museum. Many chairs in the restaurant have metal plaques on their backs engraved with the names of the famous people who sat there. Overall, the restaurant's history and atmosphere were excellent. We ordered a five-course meal. Except for the main course, beef (which was a bit dry because it was sirloin), their appetizers and side dishes were delicious. Overall, I would highly recommend it.

We received a warm welcome and had a delicious meal. The chef's menu is highly recommended. A mocktail was no problem, even though it is not on the menu.

A wonderful experience at this very unique restaurant. We ate very well, and the service was friendly, attentive, and efficient. For your information, we ordered the 6-course menu with a bottle of white wine (French, of course, let's not get carried away 🤣).

One of Amsterdam's most legendary restaurants, renowned for its rich historical atmosphere and unique name, it is often hailed as a "culinary museum." The celebrity seating is particularly interesting.

The service was very slow. We ordered the 4-course chef's set menu, and after two hours, we had to take our desserts to go because we simply didn't want to stay there any longer. Despite the long wait, the portions were Michelin-style tiny. The staff wasn't welcoming, and the food was mediocre at best. The only highlight is the interior — a beautiful historic building.

The restaurant is in a historical building as you can see the decor and exposed beams. Very traditional dutch restaurant serving delicious food. The dining experience was amazing and service was great. We had the 5 courses chef special and our son had steak and frites. Highly recommended if you're in Amsterdam.

During our stay in Netherlands, we went to this restaurant because we had read about it, and it truly exceeded our expectations. The friendly staff, always attentive to even the smallest detail; the preparation of their dishes with typical Dutch ingredients; and the welcoming atmosphere make this restaurant the ideal place for dinner. (They are closed for lunch.) It also offers good value for money.

A restaurant worth trying: refined cuisine and very pleasant service.

I haven’t been here in years and I was so relieved to find it was just as good as ever. The restaurant itself is so full of character & the staff so congenial. We just slipped into the menu with a few oysters to start, some delicious steak tartare and a fish tartare following by a delicious veal cheek and finally some delicious desserts. It’s not cheap but it is so worth visiting, truly a gem

This is a restaurant worth going to simply for its history and beautiful interiors! The staff are incredibly attentive and professional. The only downside is that the portions are quite small, not the most filling.

A restaurant with fresh produce and elaborate Dutch cuisine, in a very cozy atmosphere that takes you back to Amsterdam's past. The impeccable service, both in terms of table setting and the attention of the waitress and the head waiter, very friendly and attentive. The price is not cheap but you enjoy a meal in a place that has historical value and a local and sophisticated cuisine.

We ended our Amsterdam trip with dinner here, celebrating my wife's birthday. Beautiful premises and very good service here. We each started with a glass of cremante. The head waiter came over, looked at my wife and said: "I'm not going to sing the birthday song, but the cremante is on the house." Wonderful. We went for the chef's four-course menu, with a wine package. Very good. Started with white asparagus with eggs and shrimp in a lovely sauce. Had a delicious Dutch white wine. The next course was pumpkin soup, which was incredibly good. We drank a delicious Austrian white wine with it. Lamb was the main course, perfectly cooked and lovely with a red Dutch wine. Finally, my wife went for cheese, four lovely Dutch cheeses. Port wine with it. I went for the dessert of the day, yogurt, rhubarb, crumble and lime - incredibly tasty. The dessert wine was great, not too sweet. At the very end, my wife got ice cream on the house, and a birthday song from the waiter. Top experience, recommended!

What a beautiful restaurant. History oozes from the walls and the food is delicious. We had an extremely friendly waiter who told us a lot about the restaurant and its special features.

The service was pushy. There were problems with settling the bill because the manager didn't include the advance payment. The service was unorganized and delegated solving their problems to the customer. The food was generally good, but I've had better in Amsterdam.

Third time was a miss. This was our third visit to the restaurant and more importantly was a present for my parents. Sadly the evening was not as pleasant as the previous two visits. Our waitress was not particularly friendly while waiting us, however she was very friendly with the loud table behind us. This would have been acceptable if the food was on point. However the entrees arrived about 45 minutes after we ordered (the fixed menu) and the first course took another 40 minutes to arrive after the entrees. After being sitting for 2 hours we were still waiting for the second course. We made the staff aware of the situation and they apologised and blamed it on an understaffed evening. However when paying over 80€ per person for food I would expect a certain level of service and accountability. Sadly this was our third visit in one year and it was also our last one as well.

Wow. One of the oldest buildings and restaurants in the town with a bright history and future for a reason. Staff are so friendly and love what they do. Atmosphere is relaxing and romantic. Food is simply amazing. Looks small but the complexity of the dishes fills you. Fresh ingredients that beautifully compliment each other. I had the cod for starters and I can honestly can say I have never had unbattered cod that didn't taste like a piece of cloth before coming here, the way it was cooked, chared with garlic on the top brought out so many flavours that I didn't want the dish to end and I would not thought of pairing it with celery but it worked so well! I had the beef for main the thin slices of fried red potato with the beef add so much to that dish and the beef was cooked to perfection. Unfortunately I was too full by the end to have any dessert. I'm celiac and the staff went back and forth to the chef to check things, we're very cautious, had gluten-free heated rolls for me that were in their own packaging and really good, if they didn't come in the packaging I would have been concerned they had gluten in them! Chef was happy to substitute gluten ingredients when cooking the meals, they really know what they're doing and are so accomodating! Highly recommend! You should book and note entrance is down a small street which may not be entirely obvious

We recently dined at De Vijff Vlieghen in Amsterdam and look back on a truly special experience. From the moment you step inside, it feels like entering another world—right in the heart of the city, yet completely detached from the hustle and bustle outside. The historic ambiance and the layout of the various rooms give the restaurant a warm, almost homey feel. Each room has its own character and story, making dining here extra special. We received a warm welcome and immediately felt welcome. The staff is extremely professional, attentive, and engaged. The waiters are very knowledgeable about the restaurant, its history, and the dishes. They actively contribute to the atmosphere and make you feel truly appreciated as a guest. That level of hospitality makes all the difference. The food was exquisite. We enjoyed the finesse with which the dishes were prepared, the quality of the ingredients, and the careful presentation. Each dish was balanced and carefully composed—a combination of flavor, refinement, and craftsmanship. We celebrated our Valentine's Day here, and it couldn't have been a better choice. The entrance is so dark, with no light strips on the steps, that my friend fell and broke her hip. We were promised flowers (never received) and a free meal, which we weren't expecting. We're currently considering our next steps. We never got around to eating.

Just peeking in through the window while walking down the street you see old tapestry-lined walls with real art in gilt frames. On the old wooden table, an antique candelabra. And it only gets better. Made from the lower floors of several canal houses combined into one, walking through this restaurant is like walking through the deep warrens of a well-appointed 16th century castle. Each table is unique. Mine was a lovely carved oval table tucked away in a corner, plush with cushions in a miniature booth. Sander, the manager, anticipated my every need before I could even feel that I needed something. The food was exquisite — I had the 6-course tasting menu one night and ate from the à la carte menu the following night. The sauce and vegetables that went with each course were always perfectly paired. Even the pumpkin soup came with an absolutely delicious — and unexpected — chicken foam that was melded so beautifully together. The fish, the veal, the pork, the pâté, the oysters, the mushrooms, carrrots, the berry compote, and even the walnut ice cream — everything was a delight! I got to try Dutch wines and the Dutch champagne-adjacent bubbly and hear about how the grapes are grown. And with my cheese course came a special treat, on the house — a Dutch liqueur that drew out the creaminess of one cheese and the sharpness of the blue cheese. And before I left, Sander, the manager, took the time to give me a tour. There are so many rooms! One room has weapons on the wall that were recovered from draining the lake that is now the Amsterdam airport. One room has the largest private collection of those blue and white Delft tiles. One room has antique bottles from when the original owner ran an antique shop out of there. One room was for couples and very romantic. One had what used a garden. I recommend everyone that loves good food and history eat here.

My friend recently went to the Netherlands. The restaurant "Five Flies" has beautiful architecture and "unique" food. Two main courses, two appetizers, a soup, and a dessert. 100 euros, excluding alcohol. But I don't quite understand why they took away my half-eaten ham and bread. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Went here in a whim during my first trip to Amsterdam. Had the “6-course chefs plate” meal, along with the wine pairing, and it didn’t disappoint. Nothing about that restaurant disappointed. Great atmosphere, fantastic staff and top-notch food!!!

The food is very delicious. It's closer to French cuisine. For the price and quality in Amsterdam today, I have no complaints. The service was friendly and professional. I left something behind, but they let me know right away and kept it for me. If you're in Amsterdam, this is a must-visit.

Food didn't arrive for an hour and a half. We didn't receive any dishes (not even the ones that shouldn't take time to prepare) or even drinks as we waited. The managers told us that this was due to a disruption with one dish. The atmosphere of the restaurant is amazing but the service was terrible.

Pretty disappointing. Waitstaff were professional and charming but the service was extremely slow, even though the restaurant was barely a third full. We were seated at about 6:20 and didn’t leave until 8:45. This caused us to miss a performance we had tickets to, despite telling the waiter at about 8:10 that we’d need to move things along in the set menu we ordered. The dishes themselves were a bit uneven. A beetroot appetizer was a quite nice, and the mushroom soup that followed was unmemorable but tasty. A fish dish was rather bland and very tiny, while the duck that came later was surprisingly large by comparison, lukewarm, and not very well prepared—mine had a lot of gristly connective tissue. All the dishes over-relied on multiple sauces, which felt a bit dated and fussy. I was dying for an uncooked herb or fresh green vegetable. I do appreciate the effort that this restaurant clearly makes and its obvious pride for its wonderful history, but unfortunately it didn’t manage to deliver a great experience on the night I visited.

We were initially drawn in by the logo at the entrance the flying silver bee which immediately gave the impression of a place with a long history. The building itself dates back to 1623, while the restaurant was established in 1923 together with the hotel. Inside, the atmosphere feels very vintage, almost like dining inside a museum. We were especially lucky with our service that day: our server was extremely polite, knowledgeable, and took the time to introduce each dish after it was served. The service felt warm and genuinely professional. The price is slightly on the higher side, but considering the historical setting and the overall standard of the restaurant, it feels reasonable. We ordered the five course chef’s menu and were absolutely full by the end very, very full. The food itself was solid and comforting rather than surprising. Nothing overly mind-blowing, but it felt pleasant and cozy to dine in such an environment. One highlight worth mentioning is the bread it was especially fragrant and delicious that day (though I might have been extra hungry). The restaurant is very clean and well maintained. The kitchen is half open and appears highly organized, and the restrooms are also kept spotless, meeting the expectations of a high standard restaurant. Overall, the flavors are above average. If you’re spending a couple of days in this area, it’s a restaurant worth considering for one meal.

Quite the tourist trap. Nice concept, and the ambience is there. But the food does not live up to the prices. (For me: Cured fish not fully cured and badly deboned, pork belly overcooked and dry, service not that interested in your experience.)

The restaurant is not the easiest to find as the windows face the street on the opposite side of the location, but pointing to the entrance in the alley helps. Friendly service, good food and ice cold beer.

We thoroughly enjoyed our experience here. The atmosphere, interior, and wine list were especially perfect. The food was also delicious, although I found the flavors rather simple, which is also nice. Friendly service, and I definitely recommend making a reservation.

We did a set menu with a large group and the atmosphere was very charming and cozy and great service. For food the soup was great, but the fish dish main was very salty (and the consensus from the group) and over sauced and the dessert plate of little bites was not good either unfortunately.

The food was actually quite ordinary, neither refined nor particularly delicious. The fish fillet even had scales that hadn't been properly scraped off, indicating a lack of meticulous preparation. Furthermore, the female server at the main entrance in the alley was extremely rude. Despite knowing it was pouring rain outside and knowing where we were, and carrying large bags, she insisted we enter through a different door. It's questionable that the restaurant owner hired such a staff member. I would have only given one star initially, but I'm giving two because the server who served us was quite friendly. However, I would not recommend it and it's not worth going.

The dining room is superb. The service is a bit over the top. The dishes are good but sorely lacking in sides. You'll also discover unexpected prices, like water and an expression at 7 euros. A restaurant with truly exorbitant prices.

We booked this restaurant as part of a tour group. When it was time to enter, an older female server refused to let us in, insisting we enter through a side door. We ended up having to ask the tour leader to lead us in. The food was okay, but not particularly delicious. My initial impression was so bad that I will never return.

Simply divine!! This place is a treat. Not only is each room full of antiques, books and charm the food is to die for. I did the wine and food pairing and wow!! Being a South African I take my wine seriously so imagine my surprise at the Netherlands wine selection. As for the food, 5 courses of the most delish food combinations I’ve ever eaten. Our host was darn charming, witty and pre-empted my needs. This venue has to be on your to do list when visiting Amsterdam. Very nice atmosphere in old Dutch style (my daughter described it as a medieval Dutch tavern :-)) the restaurant was a recomendation from my Dutch colleague as a fancy place in Dutch styled food - with a question mark if it’s worth the money - well I think so - ambience great; food - we went for chef menus - nice sequence - starter (trio beetroot), pumpkin soup with creamy espuma, zander, pork belly in Madeira sauce and Dutch cheese board, tick custard based desert. Each dish was good overall and each had a nice component(s) in it although - as many reviewers compared this restaurant to Michelin starred - I was missing a bit of wow factor of taste combos; very decent food still even at its price - zander being my favourite + good sized portions for tasting menu as well. Services was kind uncomplicated and helpful - restaurant could do with few more waiters - we had to wait to order more drinks a bit. Over all Recommended !

We have visted mutliple times on our visits to Amsteram as my mother highly recommends it. The food is great and so is the location, setting, atmosphere and service. Each time we have gone for a tasting menu with wine as we feel it offers a bit more of a luxury experience and something you dont get everywhere. We would highly recommend a visit here to anyone.

This was one of the best dining experiences I've ever had. We had some of the best food either of us had ever eaten. They are right this isn't a restaurant it's a culinary museum. The decor is antique and amazing. Our server Ahmed was fantastic, he took phenomenal care of us. Splurge and get the 6 course dinner you won't regret it. If you're a wine drinker the wine pairings are excellent.

We recently had the pleasure of celebrating our 50th wedding anniversary at Restaurant d’Vijff Vlieghen in Amsterdam. We were seated at a wonderful, historic table and treated with friendly and impeccable service. The food was wonderfully prepared and presented, representing one of the finest meals that we experienced during our 35-day tour of various European destinations. We send our thanks and best wishes to the service and kitchen staff, with hopes of a return visit in the future.
