Best half sandwich in town. Just a nice old classic

Was a lot of fun, tasty Amsterdam.

It is of course the famous croquettes. But I thought €5 for a simple croquette sandwich in the canteen atmosphere was expensive.

Typical Amsterdam place, with a wide range of sandwiches. Price is decent. Staff only hired if you can speak with an Amsterdam accent is part of the experience.

I think there is not enough meat in the croquette

This might be on of the most local lunchrooms in the city centre. My father would come here as a boy and the atmosphere hasn't changed much. Don't expect 5 star service but as real Dutch experience (and yes we are very direct). Their famous sandwiches "broodje halfom", "broodje tartaar met zuur" and of course their "broodje kroket".

The best place to have the classic Dutch 'bitterballen' in Amsterdam. The place does not attract particular attention, and it is almost appreciated, since it is not crowded. Lots of local people, which already gives a good sign that quality is a standard. The food is not particularly elaborate, they are simple bar dishes but they do not leave you indifferent and they go very well with a beer. We came wanting to discover something new and we left very happy. In our case we were going with the idea of ​​having an aperitif, but we could have stayed to eat directly because everything is very good. Completely recommended to come.

Hidden gem with classic Dutch snacks and sandwiches. It was very busy and took some courage to squeeze my way up to the counter and order, but it was absolutely worth it.

We ate dutch soup that was pretty good and order of bitterballen (average quality) was charged 17.5 eur... Thought was my fault as a tourist by not confirm prices before eat, unfortunately now I find comments for other people and it's a common behavior from the place,: give to the tourist menu without prices and then overcharge with hidden taxes... good food, terrible attitude and culture with people that don't know the language and only wants to try places where local eat. Go to albert cuypmarkt, eat twice quantity and flavor for the same price

15 euros for a crumpled hamburger bun with swabbed surimi salad and fake mushroom soup. Dutch cuisine never again, bottom…

Authentic and good food, good sandwiches and croquettes even if a little too greasy. The problem is the SCANDALOUS service. As soon as they realize you're a tourist they give you a priceless menu and after you pay they don't even give you a receipt. The waitress who served us was kind and helpful, the one who made us pay got angry because we asked to pay separately, she made an absurd scene literally shouting "I don't know how it works in your country but here you pay for everything together" . Despite this little show, in the end he made us pay separately and obviously without providing any receipt. Result: €29 for three mini sandwiches (two with meat and one with cheese croquette) and bitterballen. Good but it gave us the impression of being a scam towards tourists. We never understood what we paid and we were treated VERY BADLY.

Tourist experience knows how to forget. They ignore you if you are a tourist until you are there in front and call them. Service bordering on rude as well as a feeling of poor hygiene.

Delicious meat sandwich with satay sauce and croquette sandwich. If you don't come for the food, you come for the ladies behind the bar. Beautiful people.

Aquí estamos. Comida holandesa por esencia, fui durante un viaje con la escuela hace años. Regresé unos días a Holanda y con gusto encontré esta joya. Prepárate para la comida local. Hay más gente local que turistas. El plato puede parecer frugal, pero representan bien lo que la gente puede comer para el almuerzo. El lugar sirve principalmente bocadillos (del tamaño de un puño) con croquetas o carne. Los bocadillos se hacen delante de ti y ves los productos. Una visita obligada - si quieres tener una visión de la cocina holandesa.

Pour les locaux, ça semble être une tradition. Mais attention, dès qu'on vous identifie comme touriste... Je mentionne à la serveuse que c'est ma première fois dans l'établissement. Je suis rentré car ça semblait être un lieu traditionnel, avec des photos noirs et blancs "des belles années". La serveuse fait un commentaire à voix haute en néerlandais, des locaux commencent à rire. Bonjour l'accueil! Elle fait des commentaires sarcastiques sur ma méconnaissance du lieu. Je commande au hasard, pour vivre l'expérience. Je reçois un pain commercial avec 4 tranches de ce qui semble être une charcuterie de boeuf. Froid, insipide aucune saveur. Heureusement il y a des pots de moutarde forte pour donner une âme à cette nourriture. Le deuxième est une croquette typique hollandaise au gouda et au porc. Avec un verre de soda, 16€, pas moyen d'avoir le ticket. Un vol pur et simple. Arnaque pour touristes, sûrement différents pour les locaux qui semblent apprécier. Après, on me va pas en Hollande pour sa gastronomie! Préférez un kebab avec frites et soda pour moins cher! Je suis chef-cuisinier, je parle avec connaissance de cause.

I went in because it seemed to be a traditional place, with black and white photos "from the good years". The waitress makes a comment out loud in Dutch, some locals start laughing. Hello welcome! She makes sarcastic comments about my lack of knowledge of the place. I order at random, to live the experience. I get a commercial loaf with 4 slices of what appears to be beef deli meat. Cold, tasteless, no flavor. Fortunately there are jars of strong mustard to give a soul to this food. The second is a typical Dutch croquette with gouda and pork. With a glass of soda, 16€, no way to get the ticket. Pure and simple theft. Scam for tourists, surely different for the locals who seem to appreciate it. Afterwards, people don't go to Holland for its gastronomy! Prefer a kebab with fries and soda for less! I am a chef, I speak with knowledge of the facts.

Literally the best croquettes I had in Amsterdam here, this place is a really closed local place, no tour guide, no TikTok video will bring you here. The ladies there speak Dutch but they understand English and they will serve you the best croquettes 😍 don’t forget to get their mustard sauce along which is just cherry on the top 🤌🏼

Not a touristy place with typical Amsterdam dishes. I saw on social media that the croquette burger was incredible here and I had to come and check it out... and it was clearly true, I wish I had stayed longer to eat more burgers like that... Great staff, they saw that we were tourists and when we finished we were They asked if we liked it. Experience of 10, super recommended to go. (3.15 per sandwich)

Excellent sandwiches and crokette, this is one of amsterdams oldest eateries, this is a must try, totally fabulous! The staff was excellent, very clean establishment.

If you really want to experience and taste the Amsterdam atmosphere, you should go here, I won't reveal too much else! But really super cozy, the orderly chaos of old-fashioned Amsterdam conviviality.

Just because of messages like this, I love this top place in Amsterdam even more, where you can still eat a top sandwich for a normal price, highly recommended as always! Van Dobben thanks again and keep it up ❤️

Got 6 sandwiches for more than €38. Rolls were dry, almost no butter on the roll and toppings were (half) half of what they used to be.... what a disappointment! No more Van Dobben for us!

Enjoyed it back in the day. Reviewing mostly to be able to find it when we go back, which does mean it’s worth tasting.

Excellent establishment to taste the famous Dutch rolls filled with all kinds of things (tartare, potato croquettes, smoked eel...). The service is efficient and smiling. The atmosphere is deliciously retro 😅 given the age of this small institution (be careful, it's as cold as in a small fridge 😂). I recommend without reservation (since I go there every time I go to Amsterdam).

Verpakking gekocht Van dobbe kalfs kroketten zijn als je de verpakking opent verandert in bitterballen, nog geen halve kroket. Kalfsvlees tref je er niet in aan er is hooguit wat aroma toegevoegd. De vermelding zou moeten zijn vega bitterballen voor een megaprijs. My friends came to Amsterdam to see me for the first time. So I searched for Amsterdam's representative food and went here to try it. My best culinary experience in Amsterdam! Local, cheap and authentic. I went several times during my days and tried the hamburger (favorite), the meat croquette, cheese and vegetables. Very pleasant attention!

The blond lady was particularly mean and not welcoming at all. We said hello but she decided to make a scene saying "first we say Good morning then we order because we are also human". We wanted to try the supposedly famous bitterballen. It was mediocre, nothing extraordinary. Definitely overpriced for the sprinkle of a tiny portion of meat in it! Seems like a good place for locals Not recommended if you are a tourist!

Racist to tourists. It’s a scam. Rudest service I’ve ever received in 5 years living in NL. Many other reviews say they had the same xenophobic experience. Just do not go, otherwise you’ll feel discriminated against and upset. Overpriced, mediocre food and hidden tourist taxes. I have no words to describe the horrendous treatment we received from the young, blond waitress. I was in shock and embarrassed to bring friends there.

The owner first touched everything and then took the meat with hands without gloves. She is rude and shouts all the time. The place is quaint but not very restful and the meat wasn't that good. The bread was terrible. The only thing they serve to drink is milk.

Years ago I had an unforgettable taste experience at Van Dobben. Unfortunately, this once beautiful exclusive sandwich and delicatessen shop has lost everything it once stood for. It's a shame to see such a strong brand and product. Hospitality hygiene poor, customer friendliness completely absent, presentation of an amateurishly low level. I ran away within 2 minutes.

Got a sandwich, a Coke and a 6 bitterballs for 21 euros………. you read it right the menu is not updated or they charge for unknown taxes service was very difficult, but the food was okay you can find better places around amsterdam

Highly recommended, truly Amsterdam

I recently found out that you could pull Van Dobben croquettes out of the wall at Amsterdam central station. Unfortunately they are of poor quality. They fall apart, so they are difficult to eat and they are very small, just slightly larger than 2 bitterballen. I step over ol kwekkeboom.

Nice old fashioned eat saloon. Perfect place to have some nice brood kroket or kaassouffle. Very much recommended for tourists. It is like walk in eat and go.

One of the last places where you still have Amsterdam service: the ladies are extremely smart and will help you with a wink within the blink of an eye. Everything I ate there was tasty and I come there quite often. Recommended: the steak meal. Also recommended: pistolet with a minced meat ball. Oh well, who cares, take them both!

The best funny and singing staff that will recommend to you the best food you ever had. Freshly made sandwiches with amazing variety of meat. The one with minced raw beef (creamed) is THE BEST. Will come back for more for sure.

If I can give a negative star I would. Rude and possibly racist attitude. Had bitterballen for takeaway, was waiting so my mom took a seat (it was not busy). And when it was ready for pick up the lady spoke to her colleague in her own language and I could tell from her body language that she saw my mom sitting down and thought we would have the food at the store and was going to put our food on a plate but I quickly said it’s for takeaway. Instead of stop gossiping with her colleague she would continue and I can see everybody was looking at us even after we exited the premise. Absolutely disgusting behaviour, perhaps learn basic manner before choosing customer facing job

Tourist trap, unfriendly service and expensive

Too bad, unfortunately I have to agree with previous dissatisfied visitors to this restaurant. Salon is really way too luxurious. This used to be a top place where you could enjoy a tasty sandwich. There's nothing left of it. We only ordered a croquette sandwich and warm meat. The croquette was fine, but the hot meat sandwich contained so much water that it can be recommended that the breeder have his pigs obtain an A and B swimming diploma.

I was looking for a spot where the locals go to eat traditional dutch food so my friends that were visiting me could enjoy their lunch. Unfortunately, we found the place a little unsanitary since there is mustard in open jars with a spoon that everyone uses, instead of just having a bottle of mustard on every table! And not only that, the employees were not that eager to help us when we asked some mayonaise, and they expected me to cut off the receipt from the POS machine. Also, the bitterballen where outrageously priced, or they just overpriced us the mayonaise...

I can't describe my surprise! It's like going back in time! A small hall, no longer so tightly packed with tourists, on the tiled walls there are funny pearls of local worldly wisdom, saleswomen in white coats, ready to understand and listen to complaints, but also to teach local recipes. Food: excellent. Simple and goes well with... A glass of cold full-fat milk! The white bun is fresh, lightly buttered, filled with filling as ordered: tartar (finely chopped raw meat with seasonings, whipped until the pate is smooth) - very good! Freshly smoked eel (didn’t smell like mud), there’s a lot of it in the bun - excellent! Washing it down with milk was certainly unusual, but DELICIOUS! As in childhood! Worth stopping by and trying!

Went to Dobben last Saturday. Ordered 3 sandwiches, including 1 tartare WITHOUT mayo. We wanted to take the sandwiches with us. When I unpacked the tartare sandwich, the mayo was running off. We also ordered 3 rolls with butter, but none of the rolls were buttered. What a service. It was better back in the 70's.

At first the lady behind the bar was a little frosty, but with a smile and a bit of chatter she warmed up. They don't have any information in anything but Dutch, that is fine, we are in holland so we just said what would you recommend, they liked that to be honest, explained a few things to us and we all had a different croquette on bread combo. The mustard was lovely and we did get chatting to the staff as we were the only ones in there (around 4pm). Overall I did love the food, the history and the staff but they could have been a bit more welcoming, but it really didn't bother us. As an FYI the toilet is behind the counter and you have to ask to use it, just in case you need the loo :)
