Below average food. Beware of hidden extra charges. Staff were rude and unprofessional with disparaging off handed comments. Absolutely terrible experience. Avoid this establishment.

We like to come to Van Dobben every month for a delicious veal croquette or a steak. The staff is always cheerful, warm and incredibly friendly. You can still feel that real, old Amsterdam warmth and hospitality here. A true gem in a city where more and more places are being taken over by the Yuppies. Fortunately, Van Dobben remains itself — authentic, honest and hospitable.

Nothing Amsterdam anymore. Just read Het Parool: owner from The Hague and her husband a yuppie from the stock exchange. I don't see them anywhere anymore, those born and bred Amsterdammers. Maybe in Almere, Hoorn, Purmerend etc. Well... Sandwich croquette tasty, but expensive...

When I entered yesterday afternoon around 14:00 I was received irritated..! That's why I didn't order anything. A friend of mine had ordered. After 15 minutes we were gone again.. what an incredibly unsociable business/shop/food joint Keep up the good work..! NOT!.

The croquette sandwich is delicious as usual but the atmosphere is downright grim. The employees are shouting at each other, making nasty comments about customers and treating tourists like dirt. There is clearly something wrong with the corporate culture.

I won't spend too many words on this. Van Dobben has been a household name for years. Many Amsterdammers, including me, have been coming here since they were children. Standard recipe: a glass of full-fat milk, half and half with mustard, filet americain and a croquette sandwich to wipe your mouth with. Never change. ❤️ Greetings from De Leeuw 🥒 🧅

It’s all delicious, staff amazing fun. Roast pork with gravy, the “American” and the croquette all a must have. Oh and a milk to wash it all down. Total gem.

Food was ok-good but it is very expensive

We were looking for bitterballen and came across this place by chance – it was absolutely delicious! We got them as takeaway and ate in Rembrandt Square nearby. It was crowded, and the food looked really good. The female staff working there were very energetic and nice.

No te acerques. Como turista, uno recibe un impuesto extra y una tarifa de servicio (por caminar 1 metro a nuestra mesa - el resto de la comida que recogimos nosotros mismos). Discusiones en voz alta por parte del personal de la vida privada de otras personas - estamos aquí para comer, no para entretenernos. Muy decepcionante, no volverá en los próximos años.

Here you can try the most traditional breakfast options in Amsterdam as the shop is one of the oldest in town and keeps sticking to old recipes. I would definitely revisit this place for the crickets to die for. It’s not so cheap place as we paid 40€ for 4 items and a coffee. But I honestly believe that it was worth the experience.

Just spent a couple weeks all over Europe and this has probably been my favorite meal so far. Had it for lunch and am seriously considering coming back for dinner on our one full day in Amsterdam.

Al recibir la factura, noté que me cobraron por un artículo más caro de lo que realmente tenía. Cuando lo señalé, la disculpa fue rápida pero el reembolso se dio aparentemente con renuencia. 2 . Solo después, cuando miré bien la factura, me di cuenta de que también me cobraban una tarifa de servicio del 10 % (en ningún lugar advierten que se agregará). 3 . También me di cuenta de que me cobraban un impuesto adicional del 9 %, a pesar de que el tablero de menús indicaba que los precios incluían impuestos. Estén atentos y despiertos si llegaron aquí, mi experiencia fue que se aprovecharon rápidamente de nosotros como turistas.

A piece of nice nostalgia in the heart of Amsterdam. Returned 2 weeks ago after a visit years ago. The ladies served us kindly, but the atmosphere in the restaurant was grim. When paying the bill, a drunken regular bothered us as tourists and challenged us with some marginal questions and insinuations. The woman behind the counter laughed and played along with the regular customer instead of putting the young man in his place and asking for decency for her customers. It's a shame that their nice concept with a simple but perfect croquette sandwich is being ruined like this. Keep demanding respect for everyone who spends money in the store.

Unbelievably rude and offensive service. When I politely asked for details about a potential order, I was met not with help, but with outright mockery. A staff member asked if I could read the menu—then went further to insult me by questioning whether I can read at all. I will never return, and I strongly advise others to think twice before supporting a place that treats people this way.

Nostalgic food in this iconic diner next to Rembrandtplein. A piece of Amsterdam history and still the perfect place if you want a quick lunch or dinner before the movie or going out.

We had the croquet, raw beef special and roast pork, really liked the peanut sauce, but the billing was so weird - why don’t you just put the additional charges in your food instead of putting these sketchy stuff on top of the bill? It’s quite cheap even with the additional charges and service was good, but felt a bit confused at the end 😂 I would say go try it, it’s an experience!

Visit event time we go to Amsterdam, just wish I went there more often.

Very local, very Dutch. Simple but great food. Casual but amazing.

I came here for the first time in 1989. We had a fashion show in Artis and staff from Kelly Fashion took me to Van Dobben. When I'm in Amsterdam I often go for a sandwich. The quality is excellent and the service was also special, a bit of cabaret and humor, often the same tall man who predominated. Not everyone understood this, but give it a try to be appropriately cozy for many, many years to come. And most customers could benefit from it too. Times are changing, the food is still top notch, so are the prices, now ladies in the service are doing it too, good catering is top sport, don't forget that.

You can't get more Amsterdam! You have to visit it, preferably during the week around 2-5 p.m., as there isn't much going on. To be avoided on weekends.

The croquettes are more delicious when eaten without mustard, and you can feel the natural taste. They are warm and steamy when you take a bite, so you can eat them in the best condition. The beef tartare sandwich is also delicious, but the seasoning is light, the meat is fresh so there is no smell, and the bread is soft and doesn't clog the throat and goes down easily. But when it comes to hygiene, my aunts all touch, make, and calculate with their bare hands... Just as you can imagine! However, it is delicious, so I recommend it if you want to experience this type of emotion and food! Because I want to try other things next time I come ;)

The food is really good. It’s different from what I ever have before in my life. I enjoy my time there very much. I can’t speak Dutch but everyone, even the customers are super friendly, and helpful with me. Love this exprience.

There's nothing to say about the food, just good food. The service against it is really absurd. Served by an older lady who refused to say a single word. When my girlfriend and I ordered something, we only received an arrogant look and literally not a word. No “it's coming” or maybe a “yes”, nothing. I believe that we are all adults and a little decent communication never hurts anyone. I strongly advise against it, there are 100 other locations in Amsterdam where you can eat for the same price/quality and where you will be treated kindly.

I went looking for this place online because I heard that I could eat Dutch home-cooked food. The food that came out was tasteless. It was so salty that I couldn't finish it. The croquette is also delicious. It tastes bad. There is no flavor at all. Also, what really brought down the store's score was the racist attitude of an elderly woman in her 50s or 60s. There were 2 Asian people including me. Even though we were there first, they didn't take orders and gave priority to white people who came later. They serve customers with a smile. The attitude here is much worse. Of course there was no smile, and I felt like I was treated lightly. Almost ignored. Two people from the shop were looking at me and talking about something. It feels quite unpleasant. Definitely not recommended. It's better not to go because it will make you feel bad. Who are you! That's what I thought. There are unpleasant people everywhere, but I can't believe that the service at the store is that bad. This is a restaurant where the food is 1 point but the service is minus 500 points.

Delicious crunchy kroket that gives into a ragout that is thick, creamy, and meaty. I like having it with bread to even further enhance the textural play in my mouth. Also, get a canned chocolate milk for a true Dutch experience.

Abbiamo scelto per la nostra pausa pranzo in una visita ad Amsterdam questo particolare fast food dove vengono servite specialità olandesi , particolarmente note le croquetes e le caratteristiche bitterballen polpette fritte note ad amsterdam ripiene di carne di manzo farina , burro e spezie . Il posto è alla mano ci si siede al banco e si ordina , si mangia e si paga alla fine . Un posto alla mano dove con circa 40€ abbiamo mangiato bitterballen in abbondanza (3 porzioni) e acqua consigliato!

Lovely atmosphere, exactly the description. Been coming there for years for a half-cheese sandwich and a croquet sandwich. I think it's getting pricey now, but for now it won't stop me from eating there every now and then.

Depending on the time of day, it can be very crowded and chaotic, but the food is worth it. The pastrami and croquette sandwiches are absolutely delicious and the price is right too. Anytime again - recommended.

Simple, no fuss. The staff speaks English. The clientele is also local. I recommend the alfom. No alcohol, apparently it's for breakfast 😅 In short, I ate for €6.50.

The dish is quite delicious. We ordered 1 croquet and 1 sandwich with ham and cold liver, both served with mustard sauce in cups on each table. The hot croquet was delicious and was the dish that surprised us the most. My friend even ordered a second one. The cold meat sandwich is quite delicious, the liver does not smell bad and is quite greasy, you can try it for those who can eat liver. The restaurant is very crowded with Dutch people coming to have breakfast.

For me a first visit to this luxurious, famous lunch cafe, the ideal place to enjoy a tasty meal with friends before visiting the rest of the city! A half sandwich with a glass of milk is highly recommended! For those with a big appetite, the Risschisch Egg is a tasty combination of egg, various fish salads and Russian salad.

However, the selection was enormous, the food was delicious, the service was super friendly and the prices were absolutely fair for the address in the middle of Amsterdam. A must visit for anyone who wants to eat a well-kept roll with delicious meat. Simple but super tasty.

The meat is delicious, I haven’t tried the croquette, but I think it’s the same as everywhere)) a friend advised me to try American fillet here, it’s probably the most delicious in the Netherlands, but in fact it’s stupid minced meat with mayonnaise)) I’m a little disappointed) if you’re in a town not far from Amsterdam (Bennebrook), find a butcher shop (there’s only one there) and buy an American fillet from them and grill a slice of white at home bread and it will be just incredibly tasty 🤤

What a pleasure it is to have a sandwich at Van Dobben. If I get the chance, I always drop in for the homemade Filet American, a tartare sandwich with onion and a glass of buttermilk. What a party, every time. Where is the Van Dobben chain?

We went for the Bitterballen and they are not worth it, ours were empty, without filling, €9.60 for six dough balls. The rest we saw looked good but I can't comment. They don't serve alcohol. You have to tip.

A must stop place if you're in Amsterdam the bun is so soft the women behind the counter are quick witted and have good jokes. Make sure you get a glass of milk with your food im from Canada and this is way the perfect drink but way better then milk from Canada.

Typical and original. There are MacDs and other chains everywhere but this one is definitely worth the detour. The best proof? Almost exclusively locals seated at tables, with the famous glass of milk. We enjoyed a delicious kaassoufflé, kroket Broodje, a hamburger and zalmayonaise. And the 3 ladies at the service are friendly... in their own way 😄 They are funny and open in any case. Don't miss this place, not far from reguliersdwarsstraat

Hurrah! After years, back to Van Dobben. The prolets who worked there, with dirty coats, with misplaced Amsterdam arrogance, abused the clientele. Now neat ladies, with clean clothes, courteous, fast and efficient. And now with a NICE Amsterdam twist. The food is and was good.

A great place for everyone saying „I want to try the real Dutch food” while in Amsterdam. This charming local diner offers all the staples and is famous for the croquet sandwich which is as tasty as it is simple. You can add some mustard to it, to elevate the flavor if you’d like. The bun was soft and went really well with the toppings. During my visit I tried the classic and an egg salad broodje. Both very tasty. The diner was filled with locals and tourists so it’s safe to say it’s a place you go back to. Staff were very nice, also happy to provide recommendations if needed. The prices are very reasonable for what you get as well. I’ll be coming back here whenever in the area, got a few more broodjes to try!

after waiting approximately 15 minutes in front of the service area, we finally got their attention. We received an English menu without prices, and the food was completely tasteless. We also felt ignored because we spoke English, and we noticed that they prioritized customers who spoke Dutch, even those who arrived after us. It was not a good experience and not a good vibe. I don’t recommend this place unless you are a proud nationalist and a Dutch speaker. We also believe that we paid more than we should have, but we can't prove it without a receipt or a menu with prices, which we never received.
