Greek Tavern Doris in Centrum

Sadly, this was our last visit to Greek Taverna Doris. We know it can get busy and very noisy, but tonight it was truly awful. It was way too crowded. You could barely hear each other. People in groups of six were placed at two tables for two, pushed together. There were no chairs left, and a chair was brought in from outside. We were crammed together. The only female waitress there was extremely unfriendly. She wasn't friendly or polite at all. The three men working there were, but it was extremely chaotic because of the sheer volume. There was no structure, and everyone was just running around. We waited 45 minutes for our appetizer and then another 45 minutes for the main course. After that, I had to ask for my change from the waitress, who didn't respond and started bringing food to other tables. After asking her, she said a colleague would bring the change later. The food was good, though.

Another delicious Greek meal. The bifteki with feta cheese in the middle is highly recommended. The staff is friendly and polite. It's a good place to go in the early evening, after which the restaurant fills up quite quickly.

Highly recommended! I celebrated my PhD defence dinner here with a large group of people, and we enjoyed a three-course menu. Every dish was incredibly tasty, beautifully prepared, and absolutely perfect. All of my guests were delighted, not only with the food, but also with the exceptional service and the staff’s kindness and attentiveness. Everything was flawless. I’m so grateful to the team for making my ceremony unforgettable and truly special.

I had lunch at Doris's today with my daughter. My daughter said she'd never had such a delicious lunch, and I have to say, she was right. The club sandwich gyros was surprisingly delicious. Truly fantastic, definitely recommended.

The food is delicious and highly recommended! The place needs cleaning, pieces of food on the floor from the night before, sticky tables. 30mins waiting for a starter is a bit too long.

Ordered food through Uber Eats, the food was absolutely delicious. But a lot was missing: all the side dishes, sauces, and drinks were gone, unfortunately.

What a terrible experience. I ordered through thuisbezorgd.nl, but after waiting two hours, I still hadn't received any food, so I called. They said it would be there within fifteen minutes. I ended up waiting another hour—still nothing. After waiting a total of three hours, I canceled the order. This is absolutely the last time I'll order anything from them.

Unfortunately we had a bad experience. I had reserved a table but when we arrived at Doris, there was only a very small standing table close to the stairs in a very busy area where waiters had to walk up and down all the time. That's the table they offered us. When we complained to the person who seemed the manager, he was not even listening and the only thing he said was that "at least you have a table", when we actually had made a reservation. He also offered to bring us to another restaurant, have a drink there and come back in 15-20min, which was a little bit weird. The situation was unacceptable. I understand the restaurant is busy but we were not a walk in, we had a reservation made a few days in advance. After 10/15min and a lot of complaining, we were able to get a table.. but it shouldn't have to be this way. On a positive note the waitresses were very nice and food was also good.

Horrible food! And if you say you're going to write a bad review, you get threats from the owner.

The service was outstanding! The staff was really friendly. The food was also exceptional. Chocolate soufflé in particular was one of the highlights. Highly recommended!

It was unbearable tonight. Far too noisy, long waits for drinks and food, and the food was tough and over-grilled. The staff was still running around and disinterested in the guests. The acoustics are very poor due to the hard finishing materials and the many windows. Probably too few people for a busy Saturday night. The place is tastefully decorated and beautifully situated on Poelestraat.

Greek Taverna Doris in Groningen unfortunately didn't meet my expectations. The service deserves a compliment: they were very friendly and worked incredibly hard. However, it was painful to see the manager constantly yelling at his staff, while he himself regularly smoked outside. You really felt sorry for them. We were given a table next to the open kitchen, which gave us a good view of the situation. It was extremely busy and the tables were crammed together, which didn't give the restaurant a cozy atmosphere. Two cooks were working in the kitchen, resulting in an absurdly long wait of 1 to 1.5 hours for our food. It's clear that the restaurant has far too many tables for the kitchen's capacity. The food itself was okay, but lacked the authentic Greek flavors you expect. Unfortunately, it tasted more like an attempt at something traditional than a proper dish, and the prices were a bit high for what you get. If you're in Groningen and looking for truly delicious and authentic Greek food, I'd recommend skipping Taverna Doris. There are definitely better options out there.

It was busy and we had to wait a long time. I don't mind this at all, but unfortunately, it wasn't worth it. I had a gyro, and it was incredibly dry. My partner had a mixed grill, and the gyro was also very dry, but the rest was decent. The price is high and absolutely not worth it.

Upon arrival, we were able to choose our own table. The restaurant doesn't have a liquor license for spirits and cocktails; they only serve beer and wine. We ordered appetizers and dinner at the same time, but the appetizers didn't arrive for another half hour, and the main course arrived after an hour and 30 minutes. The lasagna was burnt, and parts of the mixed grill were also burnt. The waitress was arrogant when we asked her questions. One of the worst restaurants I've ever been to.

The food was excellent, the service was good, and we were happy we could get in without a reservation. However, we found the €24.50 for the Thessaloniki platter (two skewers with three chicken pieces each) rather pricey for what you got.

We stumbled upon this restaurant for dinner because it had moved. But we weren't disappointed. The food was good, especially the stifado, which was really tasty, though the portions were small. The service was okay, but the atmosphere was average, as in many restaurants.

The food was delicious and the price was right. We did have to wait a bit for our food, as it was quite busy. Tables were close together. All in all, we'll definitely be back.

I didn't find it all that special, not fresh or from jars, spreads not even home-made, authentic Greek taste was missing, no Greek atmosphere in the restaurant, no Greek music or decor, full in the restaurant and 3 men in service who couldn't cope. Between starter and main course there were 2 hours, we were not asked if we wanted another drink, so 2 hours 1 drink, it was just embarrassing, we wondered if they had forgotten us, the large mixed grill was really too little for the men, this was really not an extra large mixed grill, and here too the authentic Greek taste was missing, we were there at 6.15 pm, the first hour waited for starter, then waited an hour and a half for main course, we decided not to have dessert and after an apology for the long wait and no compensation for this we left very disappointed. You will never see me here again

The food was delicious, as always. But the service was terrible. I accidentally spilled a whole glass of water on myself, of course. It happens. No compensation whatsoever. They didn't even come back to our table to ask if everything was dry. I wasn't impressed with the rest of the service either.

The gyros were delicious, though a bit greasy, but that was manageable. The fries were very well seasoned. The beans, however, seemed dried out or microwaved straight from the freezer, not fresh, and they looked quite unappetizing.

Bediening is hondsbrutaal, zeker de serveerster. Duurt een uur tot voorgerecht, uur tot hoofdgerecht en uur tot nagerecht. Men maakt fouten bij opnemen van drankjes en geeft klant de schuld.

Pretty good food. But it takes a ridiculously long time before you get anything and the service is strange. They don't have almost all the beers on the menu. If you order a certain beer, they come with an orange juice. 'We didn't order it, we said'. But the lady serving us just got mad at us! We really didn't order it. It was a mistake from a colleague but she got really rude to us. A bit of a shame because the starter, main course and dessert were really great. When I saw the juice on the receipt, the lady thought I was crazy. Could have been worth repeating but not after all...

Our experience with the service was awful. We ordered more than an hour before the closing time. When the food didn’t arrive after 60 minutes after ordering (15minutes before the restaurant was supposed to close), we asked about our order and the waiter said they forgot to order it and said “I haven’t seen your food on the bar” and then looked in his notes where he wrote down our order and just said “my mistake”.

The food is very expensive, but tasted great so I still wanted to give a tip. The pin machine was down when I wanted to pay, I was asked to walk to a machine. No problem, it can happen. When I returned I gave the money, but there was no change in the cash register. If I could increase my tip because otherwise he wouldn't get it back. I said that the tip was already on the high side and that this wouldn't work. He also wanted to let me go without giving my change back while I clearly said that that wasn't the intention! I literally had to grab my overpaid tip back from him because I didn't get it back! How can you treat customers like that? Not having your cash register in order at all and letting customers pay way too much, what a disgrace.

Vorig jaar hadden we een goede ervaring en daarom opnieuw naar Grieks Restaurant Doris in Groningen. Dit keer niet lekker gegeten. Bijgerechten werden te vroeg geserveerd, hoofdgerecht werd niet met zorg op het bord gepresenteerd, mixgrill deels zwart aangebrand, zelfs de bijgaande doorgekookte boontjes. Opmerking hierover aan personeel werd kritisch ontvangen en zelfs tegengesproken. Jammer deze ervaring.

Por dentro eso cambia un poco, pero es ocupado y ruidoso y quizás hayas encontrado uno de esos restaurantes griegos realmente geniales que los lugareños conocen y aman. Usted nota que el servicio es glacial y no mejora durante la noche. Que la comida es generosa en porciones y de mala calidad. Pones venir aquí abajo a un error y uno que no repetirás, pero ¿por qué es tan popular entre los lugareños? Habría calificado esta estrella, pero dado lo popular que parecía ser entre todos los demás, la he convertido en dos. Tampoco es particularmente barato. ¿Quizás podrían reciclar algunas de las ganancias para conseguir más personal en servicio?

We visited Doris with friends and really enjoyed the food. The staff were friendly and very good at what they do. Since we went on a Saturday, it was quite busy and the service was a bit slow, but we didn’t mind.

On May 6, 2025, we had a delicious meal here with my husband. Smooth and pleasant operation. All dishes were delicious. We had one of the tables by the window and nice view of all the movements of the City.

Food delicious! Also the vegetarian options. Service excellent. But super noisy because the restaurant was packed. I would come back for the food, but only when the lot is less busy.

I went here to celebrate getting my diploma and I am glad I did it here. I was pleased by the very kind customar friendly service. Not only in attention and detail, because some in my company were vegan, they paid special attention to provide plenty of options to make all vegetarian options also vegan options. Besides that, near the end we haven't finished all of our food and we were able to take the leftover home, carefully placed in a container and bag. Also, the food was very delicious and I could recommend the Mousaka! All in all, a nice gem in the city centre of Groningen providing very tasty greek food and friendliness!

Excellent Greek restaurant. We took some starters. Including the octopus, which was very tasty, but was grilled a little too enthusiastically, which resulted in quite a few black pieces. The Tarama Salata (fish roe salad) was too creamy for us and a large quantity, highly recommended for a fan. The spanakopita is very tasty and well filled, only lukewarm and not really warm. The dessert was custard with semolina and recommended to take. It is a pity that the wines are not sufficiently described on the menu.

Pita Gyros was good, well filled with good and tasty meat. Unfortunately the lettuce was completely old and brown... I had to fish everything away. The Pita Chicken only had 4 cubes of chicken in it, in comparison the Gyros had twice as much meat compared to the price. Also fished away all the lettuce from the chicken. Tzatziki was great!

The food is very good, especially the galaktoboureko, which is delicious. However, the prices are pretty high compared to the portions you get. The moussaka wasn't that bad (portion-wise), but if you choose something off the grill, you don't get much meat. The staff is generally very friendly. Reserving a table is recommended. As a group of 8, we were seated at a round table meant for a maximum of 6, which was very cozy but maybe a little too cozy. After notifying the staff, we were moved to a table where 8 people could comfortably sit.

We stopped to take a break and eat something here. I had the soup of the day which was a tomato soup with meatballs and flatbread and the spanakopita. I was very pleased with the soup as it warmed me up and tasted very VERY good. The best tomato soup i had in years. The spanakopita was less impressive. It was very sweet, and for a bakery product made with spinach and feta cheese i found that a bit weird but maybe my expectations were wrong. They also paired it with a garlic mayo sauce which.... is ok but i thought that it didn't really pair very well with the pie. The service was great, as both the owner and the waitress were very friendly. We spoke with the waitress in english. The atmosphere was very relaxed, clean and chic. The large windows that grant you a view of the canals and the passersby are very pleasing. The general design and look of the place is also tastefully done and it makes you feel comfortable.

Very good Greek restaurant in the Poelestraat in the heart of Groningen. They have a nice, extensive menu, with authentic and contemporary Greek dishes. As a starter we had an excellently made 'Psomi apo to grill'. And as a main course the classic mixed grill. And this one was really good, wonderfully seasoned and little fat (not too dry). Finished with a delicious Greek dessert. A small downside is the lack of ouzo. But really one of the better Greek restaurants I've been to.

Very busy, restaurant packed. We waited a total of 1.5 hours for our food and there was no apology or anything like that. The meatballs beforehand were fine, but the gyros looked and tasted as if they had just finished them off. Definitely not recommended, just take the Greek name out of your name because the hospitality here has nothing to do with it.

That's fine, but people who come in have to close the door behind their butts when they come in. Especially when the northeast wind is blowing. How hard is that!!

Great cozy and warm atmosphere with plenty of options featuring traditional Greek food. I loved the greek souvlaki, as it is the closest I have ever tasted outside of Greece!

The food is fantastic. Really very tasty, but you don't necessarily have to go for a nice dinner because the tables are so close together and the restaurant is so full that it feels like a commercial factory. Because it is very busy, the staff is actually too rushed to really pay attention and recommend dishes or wine. It's a shame because once again the food is divine.

We were there this evening and absolutely loved it! I eat vegan and not only was the selection large, the vegan gyros were very tasty! The waiter was very polite and friendly and the ambience was very cozy and elegant. We'll definitely be back!

We visited the restaurant on a Sunday evening. Because the restaurant was full, we were seated in the back area. Unfortunately the wait for our food was a little longer than expected. However, the staff was friendly and the taste of the food was convincing. However, the portion size left something to be desired. Given the fairly high prices, I expected larger portions.

Food is fantastic! Tender meat, small mixed grill, more than enough. Tasty fries. Delicious beans and raw vegetables. Service was good even though it was super busy (winter prosperity), so it was noisy and you were sitting close to each other. Not reserved but were allowed to sit (6 p.m.) until 7:15 p.m. (due to a reservation) We easily managed that because the service was very smooth. We will go here again next time, but we will make a reservation first.

Good food, nothing to complain about, but it is strange that if you ask for an extra bowl of vegetables [we only had a small bowl of beans for 2 people] you are billed 3 euros, we thought this was a negative point, hence 2 stars for service

Ordered a table for 4 people and left the shop after 25 minutes of being ignored. Guests who arrived after us were immediately greeted with a card. It's a shame, service is actually different.

It took 2 hours for our order, the toilets are disgusting. they took my order wrong twice and still charged me for an extra which i never received, and it’s very expensive. every food is over 20 euros, even for the not so great stuff.

Excellent food, very large portions. Service seemed to be having a bit of a hard time, the restaurant was also completely full. This made everything take a little longer. Service was friendly!

Food was very tasty, but we didn't feel completely welcome. It was around a quarter to 9 and the service was already busy cleaning and did not seem very friendly (they also did not ask if we wanted dessert). Maybe the kitchen closed at 9 o'clock, but then it might be useful to say that you close at 9 or half past 10 instead of 10 o'clock. But again the food was very tasty, so I feel a bit reluctant to write this review.

This tastes excellent. Overall, the staff is rather rude and not very solution-oriented. Especially since they didn't even have saganaki anymore (Saturday evening at 8 p.m.). Actually it doesn't work at all. The ambience is not that good. It's far too loud, too crowded and you can hardly understand your own words.

Excellent Greek food - easily some of the best in Groningen. Totally authentic (my Greek friend said so!) and the service was excellent. Just keep in mind that it is quite pricey.

Had a good meal and had a nice seat by the window. Everything was super flavorful and delicious. I imagined myself in Greece again. Our recommendations are the fried feta, tzatziki, grilled vegetables and the best pitas ever (good olive oil and herbs, perfectly grilled). It is pricey I must say, but you also get a lot. The lamb souvlaki could have been baked a little shorter for our taste, then it would have been perfect! It wasn't dry, but could definitely be more tender. The beans and fries with aioli that came with it were also very tasty and tasty. There's a lot of garlic in everything!🫢 Friendly service :) I'm going to try lunch too! Update: Lunch is also definitely worth it! The Greek frappé and pitas are just like in Greece😋 For a great price. You must like meat (or else choose the vegan one), because the pita is mainly filled with meat. In terms of proportion, I would have added a little more tzatziki and tomatoes. More tzatziki was no problem and super tasty. Pita bread fresh and tasty again. Meat quite well done, but good flavour. Service is very friendly. For those reasons, definitely come back again to enjoy the best pita in Groningen.

Doris is a super good Greek restaurant and a real asset to the city. have been coming to Doris for years and remains simply the best Greek restaurant in Groningen.

You've come to the right place for Greek food. Wonderfully tender meat, tasty starters. My absolute number 1. We always go here. The sirloin steak is very good. With pepper sauce and delicious prepared vegetables underneath. Always have the feta in advance!

Been a second time. It was a bit busier now. The two of them were able to manage quite well, although some people had to wait quite a long time. The food was again excellent. Only the Laganika I had this time was downright bad. Burnt vegetables (yes I know what grilled is) with a bit of bulger and 2 pieces of halloumi was nothing to write home about. Shame. That is why I have adjusted my review slightly. == What a nice place to eat. To be honest, I wasn't a big fan of Poelestraat. But this is a pearl I must say. Great service, attentive and hospitable. The food is really tasty. We would love to come back again. It's also nice to see that they have a separate vegetarian menu. Fine!

Waardeloos. Zeer slechte bediening. Na anderhalf uur wachten op onze bestelling nog niets gekregen. Tafels die na ons kwamen waren al klaar met eten en nog niets.

Ordered food here today, I ordered gyros but did not know it was pork which I am not allowed to eat, when calling this restaurant the gentleman on the line said that the food was already on its way but came up with a solution to still get chicken skewers. had it delivered, the old delivery was taken and a new one was delivered to my home, I am not used to such service from restaurants in Groningen so thank you very much for the solution!!! And the food was delicious!! Will definitely order here more often “from now on the chicken skewers” ​​;)

Snel even uiteten in Groningen. Doe maar een Griek. Zo zijn we uitgekomen bij Doris. De verwachtingen waren niet hoog gespannen maar dan wordt je aangenaam verrast. Bediening was snel en punctueel. Snel hadden we onze drinken op tafel en vrij snel daarna ons eten. Eten was heel vers klaargemaakt en lekker van smaak. Prijs was goed gelet op de kwaliteit. Aanrader.

Heerlijk Grieks eten en mooi restaurant. Al het eten wat we kregen was super goed van smaak. Porties waren goed. Enige nadeel is de bediening. Bij binnenkomst snel, maar tussendoor vragen ze niet om drankjes. Daarnaast lang op de rekening moeten wachten.

The staff was having a hard time, passed on the order, then came again the next time to ask if we wanted to order. Then it took a little longer because the gyros were gone! To compensate, a portion of pita bread. After a long wait, first the small bowl of lettuce that accompanied the dishes was brought to the table, followed a little later by the fries (sorry, fries). Anyway, we started eating. When both were finished, the mixed grill arrived. Tip: just order the small one because the large one is exactly the same. Then a bowl of salty beans followed. The meat was fine, beans and fries way too salty. When asked if everything had been satisfactory, they indicated that the meat had been tasty (it was) but that we had had to wait a long time. That caused visible irritation for the waitress. The fact that we did not leave a tip also led to misunderstandings when paying. I expect that you can have a good meal there if it is not busy and purchasing has gone well. But not when it's busy.

Ordered the food and had it delivered. It arrived 50 minutes later than agreed. The food was therefore cold. It was also disappointing in terms of size compared to what they claim on the website and delivery apps. After several phone calls we agreed that we would get our money back. After more than a week we are still waiting for our money.
