Nijmegen's oldest cafe. We had a lovely time outside after welcoming the four-day walkers. The food was delicious.

You really have to see this when you visit Nijmegen! Oldest cafe in this beautiful city. Nice to see that they still show the history here. Like the story, the interior and the atmosphere. Also very friendly staff. Ordered 2 cappuccinos, got a small drink for free from a local entrepreneur. Class!

You will find few places in the Netherlands where the cuisine is haute and the hospitality warm and welcoming.

Very nice place! But at a certain point the staff decided that we were not allowed to order any more drinks. They thought we had had enough. I understand that in case someone is drinking. However, we had a few drinks and were still completely fine. No crazy things and no nuisance... We just sat at the table and talked. I have never experienced this before and feel very patronized.

''In de Blaauwe Hand'', was originally part of the Nijmegen cloth hall, which was built around 1320. The cloth hall ran across the entire width of the west side of the Grote Markt. On the ground floor the hall consisted of openwork arcades that formed the covered market, on the upper floor there was a weaving mill and a blue dyeing factory for dyeing the fine cloth fabrics. Large-scale cloth production came to an end in 1540 and the cloth hall was divided into smaller living and working units, of which ''de Blaauwe Hand" was one of them. Since 1542, the building has been used as a canteen for the blue dyers who continued their work on a small scale, dyeing fabrics blue. This initially happened with the thickened remains of the European woad plant, but since the VOC traveled to India in the 17th century, this was done with the much more effective but more expensive indigo plant. Blue-dyed clothing was therefore expensive to purchase and hardly affordable for ordinary citizens. The process took a number of weeks, after which the fabrics were immersed by hand in tubs several times and rinsed clean (in the Waal). It caused blue hands hence the name of the cafe. Finally, the fabrics were hung out to dry on Monday. That was a day off for the weavers and dyers, hence the name ''a blue Monday''. In the aldermen's protocols of Nijmegen, the name ''de Blaauwe Hand'' is first mentioned in 1746. The blue dyeing industry, in combination with cotton printing, chemical dyeing and steam laundry, has continued to exist in recent centuries. Particularly near the former cloth hall. For example, before 1940, there had been three blue dye houses on the Lange Hezelstraat and the Ganzenheuvel for more than 100 years, two of which were named ''the Blue Hand''. The current café ''in de blaauwe hand'', the word ''in'' was only added in 1960, is the oldest café and company in Nijmegen. Historic café in the center of Nijmegen and the oldest pub in the city, full of authentic atmosphere! We tasted the exclusive Rooie Tieptop tripel, a slightly sweet and spicy beer, specially brewed in collaboration with Brouwerij De Hemel. The vegan snacks were delicious: bread with puffed garlic butter, gyoza and cauliflower buffalo wings. Highly recommended for a nice drink in a characteristic brown pub!

Very typical, coming in at 24:30 (Half an hour before closing time) and then receive the message that the last round has already taken place due to half time. There were at least 6 guests, but there was no ordering. Very unfortunate!

Well, every year we visit De Blauwe Hand, with the 4-day event. Tradition that we continue in this charming, oldest cafe in Nijmegen. recommended. Behind the building is the Stevens Church.

A household name in Nimwegen and the surrounding area since 1542. Even though the beer was cold, we thoroughly enjoyed the food and drinks available. Five of the five sparkling celestial bodies that orbit the Earth!

Besides the location, everything that is not historically foreseen is also correct: the range of beers, the knowledgeable staff and the conviviality. Just don't be afraid of steep stairs when you have to pee 😉

In the area doing research regarding my grandfather 61st Highland Anti Tank Regiment, 51st Highland Division. I was listening to a James Holland podcast where he mentioned going to the Blaauwe Hand bar. We decided to also stop for beer and snacks and we were glad we did. Fantastic range of beers on offer. Oldest café in Nijmegen in a beautiful old part of this city. We chose the flammkuchen. Very tasty! Very good service by a young man. Both indoor and outdoor seating.

The beer selection was diverse and great 👍. The place had a old and classic atmosphere. The food menu looked great and creative, didn't get to taste any though. Maybe next time!

The café is somewhat hidden behind the Waag in a narrow street, but it is definitely worth a detour. Beautiful decor, a nice large terrace, a huge choice of beers and friendly, prompt service. What else do you want?

Last visited April 2024 I only give special places 5 stars and this place I one of them. Very cosy with a fantastic selection of beers plus friendly and knowledgeable staff to help you. Every time I visit Nijmegan I almost make time to drop by.

Het oudste café van Nijmegen (Stamt uit ca. 1300). Een van m n favoriete plekjes om n pintje te pakken. Veel soorten bier op fles en ook genoeg op fust. Daarnaast een uitgebreide whiskey kaart en ook genoeg keuze uit diverse hapjes, borrelplank, kaas, flamkuchen etc. Heerlijke relaxte sfeer.

Oldest Bar in Nijmegen with exposed medieval wood work. There is a good selection of local beers and spirits. Just slightly off the Grote Markt square. Worth checking it out.

De naam: In De Blaauwe Hand is een verwijzing naar het verleden van het pand, de Lakenhal. De lakens werden met kleurstoffen gekleurd. Voor de kleur blauw werd indigo gebruikt. Dit geeft af waardoor de lakenververs van hun vingers tot ellebogen helemaal blauw kleurden. Het café dankt zijn naam aan de lakenververs die in het café iets gingen drinken, met het blauw nog op hun hand. Op vrijdagavond snel vol.

Als je je brein op de meest primitieve setting wilt laten werken moet je er een paar Tap 5 in knallen, super waar voor je geld

Well-designed pub. Peppered with fragments of its long history and hidden blue hands all over the place a lot of character. there are numerous small details which elevate the atmosphere of the bar. Service was extremely friendly. Beautiful and conveniently central location.

Avoid the restaurants at the square just 60 m away. Their food is so and so and the service as well. At the Blaauwe Hand the food is perfect for this type of restaurant, and the service as well. And the ambiance couldn't be better if the weather allows to sit outside. I'm so seldom surprised by how good something is. Here I was.
