Lakhay - Nepalese & Tibetan Restaurant in Oude Pijp

I thought I had a good idea of Nepalese/Tibetan cuisine after visiting restaurants. Until now: welcome to Lakhay! To start, we started with a samosa (€6.95). Familiar, but clearly very fresh and with a spicy mix of potato, onion, and lentils in spicy spices. Fried or not: absolutely not greasy. Along with it was 'Pork Chola' (€13.95), which turned out to be roasted pork belly. Crispy, not overly salty at times, and deliciously seasoned with spring onion, garlic, coriander, and soy sauce. Lime and fried rice were served on the side. Two completely different main courses, shared together, complement each other perfectly: 'Chicken Dry Thukpa' (€16.95) and 'Local Bhale' (€19.95). The former is a noodle dish with minced Himalayan chicken, peas, sesame seeds, garlic, and a soy-like sauce. The Nepalese "Local Bhale," rather unconvincingly described as "with crispy potato," turns out to be chicken: grilled, tender with a delicious grilled flavor, and there's a fried version. Potatoes? Warm wedges in their skins and cold as a salad. Also served here: fried rice. The menu is in English, as is the service, except for the owner. He speaks passionately, and more convincingly than the menu, which are (particularly) recommended. Conclusion? The Nepalese/Tibetan dish turns out to be even more versatile than I thought...

As a Nepali, I can vouch that Lakhay has one of the most authentic Nepali taste.

I went here years ago and still think about it — the food was incredible, the staff was so warm and kind (they even opened the restaurant back up after they had closed because we wanted to eat there, and recommended amazing dishes), and the atmosphere was lovely. We went to dinner here both nights of our trip because it was so fantastic. I was reminded of this experience when my friend asked for Amsterdam recommendations — this will always be the first on my list!

Absolutely delicious. Lakhay really brought me a taste of home. The pork choila was packed with flavours, although I expected it to be served cold, the taste more than made up for it. The momo were absolutely perfect, just like what I grew up eating back home. It’s a pity I couldn’t eat everything they have in one sitting. I’ll definitely be coming back to explore the rest of the menu. Highly recommended for anyone craving authentic Nepali flavors in Amsterdam!

Everything we ordered was delicious. If you don't know what to order, the waiter will give you recommendations. The best was the curry chicken stew with rice and beans.

I recently visited a Nepali restaurant and had a wonderful experience! I tried some typical Nepali food, and it was absolutely delicious. The flavors were rich, authentic, and comforting. You can really tell the food was made with care and tradition in mind. I especially enjoyed how each dish had its own unique taste and spices service was very nice🥰

I'd never had this kind of food before, so we followed the recommendation of the owner, who's from Nepal, and we loved it!! The chicken was perfect. My boyfriend's dish was hearty, with an indescribable variety of flavors. We also tried the Nepalese beer, which we found delicious. The staff is super friendly and patient. I recommend it to anyone who wants to travel to other countries and experience different cultures through food.

6 euros for a bottle of tapped water! This is outrageous!!!! I feel scammed. Water is basic. Food was good but not wow.

We trusted the owner's recommendation, and it was simply more than just delicious. I have a gluten intolerance, and he would have prepared any menu for me. After much deliberation, we decided to have chicken, and it was so incredibly delicious. My stomach feels good; I didn't have any pain.

Fantastic. Highly recommend the Lakhay platter and the JUJU Dhau (yogurt) for dessert. Portions are perfect for sharing as well!

Very very good food. We loved everything we ordered, the spices and sauces were to perfection. It's not a 5-star elegant place, but the food is worth 5 stars. Highly recommend and would definitely come back.

It was our first time at the restaurant, we were greeted with welcoming atmosphere and the food smelled really nice. We were so excited for the whole Nepalese experience! Despite our enthusiasm, the owner had a few micro agressive acts towards our table. First of all, we all ordered rice dishes but my specific rice was stale, but its okay, it happens. Then he told us not to use our phones which warms our hearts because a lot of adults are neglecting these addictions among the youth. However, later on, the owner said "i had a lot of groups of Chinese who always on their phones" and mimicked the Chinese negatively. Well, it is rude to express that to any customers group, and more specifically we are Asians not Chinese. I tried to tell him that it is judgemental to assume all Asians as Chinese and to my surprise and shock, he said "you look like me, you look like my mom". What a strange thing to say to a young girl coming from middle age man. Overall, we were let down by this establishment.

Pedimos chow mein, arroz frito vegetal, veg thali y buñuelos brinjal. La persona que tomó la orden habló muy bien e hizo pocas sugerencias. El pedido duró entre 20 y 30 minutos, aunque no había mucha gente. Los buñuelos eran agradables, pero Chow mein y arroz frito eran muy aceitosos (grasos). El tamaño y los componentes de la porción de Veg thali no justificaron el precio.

I had Nepalese and Tibetan cuisine for the first time at and it was an incredible experience! The momo were absolutely delicious, full of flavor, the chicken was a 100/10 – incredibly juicy, high-quality, and probably the best chicken I’ve had in a long time. Crushed roasted rice such a great surprise! It was super tasty with amazing textures – crispy and light, while the meat was tender and full of flavor. The potatoes were also excellent. Highly recommend this place – everything was fresh, full of flavor, and beautifully prepared.

Really good food, nice portions not too much. Very nice deep spicy flavors. We had the momos as a starter, impressively tasty. As a main course lamb stew, delicious clove flavor. The chicken chili nicely marinated soft and tender chicken. And as a main course the momos are also delicious! The acoustics are noisy, music interrupted by commercials we did not like that. Service good, too bad they do not speak Dutch. Also menu card only in English.

We had a wonderful time at Lakhay. The service was great, very attentive and friendly throughout our meal. The food was absolutely awesome – a real cornucopia of Nepalese flavors run by wonderful Nepali people :) Very kid-friendly, and there is space for a small stroller near the front. We particularly loved the dumplings and the chili chicken, both packed with incredible taste. Highly recommend!

The momos were quite good. Food simple yet very tasty. Was in a quiet place. Loved it.

We made a last minute reservation which ended up with our group of 7 arriving a half an hour earlier than planned. We were accommodated immediately by a very charismatic and kind server and the food was well prepared and delicious. Thank you for the great experience— we hope to come back with a smaller group and try the other dishes in the menu if we ever make our way back!

Ugh, where do I even begin with this place? I was really craving some comfort food, so I ordered their fried rice and paneer chili. Let's just say my cravings were definitely not satisfied. First off, the paneer in the chili was rock solid. Seriously, it felt like I was chewing on little rubber cubes. Not the soft, melt-in-your-mouth texture you expect at all. Then there was the fried rice – the chicken pieces were alarmingly orange, like they'd been dipped in a vat of food coloring. It just looked…unappetizing, to be honest. And the taste? Well, let's just say it didn't make up for the visual disasters. Both dishes were bland and just generally not good. To top it all off, the portion sizes were ridiculously small for the price I paid. I actually felt ripped off. Honestly, save your money and your taste buds. There are way better places out there. This one is a hard pass from me.

I visited Lakhay - Nepalese & Tibetan Restaurant in Amsterdam on April 14, during my trip from Ghent, Belgium – which also happened to be the Nepali New Year. It turned out to be one of the most heartwarming experiences I’ve had abroad. From the moment we walked in, everything reminded me of home. The food was incredibly authentic – just like the real Nepali food I used to enjoy back in Nepal. We ordered the Nepali Thali set, Thenthuk, Keema Noodles, Chowmein, Sukuti, and some drinks. Every dish was full of flavor and truly satisfying. A special thank you to the cook for preparing such delicious meals! The owner himself served us, and his kindness really stood out. He even played a Nepali song on the speaker, and happily played the one we recommended as well – which made the atmosphere feel even more special and personal. I’ve been to several Nepali restaurants in Ghent, but I can confidently say this was the best experience I’ve had so far. Thank you, Lakhay, for making my Nepali New Year so memorable!
