Had a good meal, good service, but very difficult to find via navigation

After cycling 25km and walking a lap around Zegerplas, we had lunch here just the two of us before cycling the last 25km. The avocado sandwich was well-filled and tasted good. The croquette sandwich, on the other hand, looked a bit sad despite the fine taste. A plain bun with two croquettes and a small bowl of mustard mayonnaise. The garnish consisted of two small pickles and two onions so small you could stick them in your hollow tooth. A tip: serve a scoop of Russian salad or something similar on a lettuce leaf. It immediately looks a lot more inviting. A dollop of butter and/or mustard would also be nice. It's a shame the brown bread was sold out, and it was Saturday lunchtime at that. I heard that other things were also out of stock. Tip two: Sharp knives would also be nice. The sandwich was impossible to cut. So we just ate it straight from our hands. It wasn't very easy. Conclusion: The food was good, but could be better.

Had a delicious meal, a few small things I miss: coasters (we were served IPA in a Heineken glass), and I miss the atmosphere in the form of candles as dusk falls, but otherwise top-notch!!!

For years, it was our favorite spot at “The Lake”. ❤️ Unfortunately, the lovely concept of just plopping down, ordering via the QR code, and then simply enjoying yourself has disappeared. Nowadays, you have to go get your drink or snack yourself and are placed somewhere behind a thicket by the water. It was precisely that convenience that made this place so appealing to us: sitting comfortably, ordering, and not having to worry about a thing. 🍹☀️ We have since learned that the concept is being scaled back even further. For us, this is reason enough to look for our regular outing elsewhere from now on. It is such a shame that such a nice, relaxed, and above all convenient place is being turned upside down like this. As far as we are concerned, it is absolutely no improvement. 😔

What happened here? The whole relaxed vibe is gone. We really wanted to sit on the comfortable chairs by the water and have something to eat, but now you suddenly have to get your own food and drinks at the bar, where the food selection consists of only four snacks. If you really want something tasty, you absolutely have to sit on the terrace, where you do get served, though you have to wait a long time. It's also not nearly as relaxed as sitting on the “old” grey chairs. And then there are the prices. I really don't mind paying four euros for a tea, but is it really too much trouble to serve a large tea instead of a small cup? You're not going to go bankrupt over a little more hot water, are you? If you're worried about your revenue, make sure your customers get their drinks quickly. The sooner they order a new one ——> revenue goes up. It all looks slick, but the charm is completely gone. A cozy part of Alphen has disappeared.

A great addition to Alphen; it used to be fun but messy, now it's simply good and professional. We've eaten there twice now to our great satisfaction. The last time, they had two parties during our dinner, yet everything was perfect in terms of service and food; very impressive. I give them a solid 9.

We take a walk around the Zegerplas every week and stop for a drink at Sunset. What strikes us is that the terrace is often partially closed when the weather is nice. The location is also susceptible to wind, yet the windbreaks are down precisely on those days? We usually order two cocktails and/or two glasses of wine and ask for two glasses of tap water to go with it. To our surprise, we recently discovered that they charge €1.85 per glass for this. All in all, the unique experience for the guest is still lacking here.

I found it very expensive for what you got. Nice menu though, beautiful presentation. Next time I would definitely choose something else from the menu. We were there for lunch.

We ate here last Saturday with two people. Due to the weather, it wasn't very busy. But what a beautiful location. The portions were on the generous side, and we were really full when we left. Compliments to the young gentleman who served us on Saturday; he came by regularly to ask if everything was to our liking and if we wanted anything else to drink. It was unfamiliar territory for us because we were just passing through and wanted to eat somewhere. A pleasant surprise, and we are talking about driving back again 💪

A wonderful location in a prime spot with a truly lovely atmosphere, delicious Aperol, and a good appetizer bread. We ordered our main course along with the Aperol and bread, but it never arrived. It was apparently forgotten. This only came to light after an hour when we actively inquired. We were certain the order had been taken correctly, as we were asked whether we wanted the bread with or before the burgers, and normally, you'd notice something's been forgotten at the latest when clearing away the appetizers. Well, when he finally wanted to send our order to the kitchen after an hour's wait, we politely declined, as it was already after 9 pm and we had little interest in waiting any longer. However, any reasonably attentive server should have noticed this. A simple "Sorry" was all we received.

We indicated our reserved dinner at the restaurant because it was extremely hot that day, over 30 degrees. Upon arriving at the door, no one came to assist us. All the staff walked back and forth without looking at us… we had to find someone ourselves to ask for attention. When you see guests waiting by the door, every staff member is supposed to first greet the guests and inform them that someone might be coming for further assistance. But one of the staff members says, “I don’t have a tablet, so she is going to sit at the bar.” Eventually, luckily, we were shown to our table, which was right by the water without a parasol in the heat, so we asked to be moved inside. We were taken to the dirty table and we had to ask them to clean it ourselves… completely forgotten about us again without first asking if we wanted a drink or giving us the menu in between. I had to go to the bar again to ask where the staff were? They completely forgot about us for a while again, busy with everything except us. So we thought the service had turned out to be absolutely top-notch, but we are very disappointed. This is not the first time, because on other occasions we had to wait a long time for our bottle of wine three times as well. What a shame!!!!

The location is great, everything has been beautifully renovated. A nice place to sit. The only thing is that the portions could be bigger.

We ordered the catch of the day, steak, burger, and brisket, and we had a very tasty meal. The brisket and steak, in particular, were flavorful and deliciously tender. However, the portions are small and the prices are high. If you pay 28 euros for a piece of meat and 16 euros for a burger and you don't get a potato, fries, salad, or anything similar with it—leaving you still hungry after a pricey main course—then something is definitely going wrong. The menu stated that the steak/catch of the day would come with 'potato,' but these were just mini chips/fries, which is quite misleading. It is a missed opportunity to make such tasty dishes more complete with a 'real' potato and/or some vegetables. Otherwise, it is lovely to sit on the terrace by the water, and the service was good.

Sunset has become an even more beautiful place to visit! Not only for drinks or a party, but also for a good meal! We were there with the children and everyone enjoyed their meal. The service was also top-notch and professional! See you soon!

We enjoyed this evening! What a fantastic place for a restaurant! We had a delicious meal. We chose a steak, highly recommended! It was great that the eclipse glasses were provided! That naturally added an extra dimension to the evening. The two minutes of silence requested for the final moment of the solar eclipse was also a breathtaking moment. A round of applause for the staff; they must have been incredibly busy. Despite the crowds, we were served quickly. We will definitely be back!

Despite the crowds (completely full), everything went great. Delicious dishes. Started with oysters and had an extensive dinner; perfect!

Super beautiful location. Service really not okay; we walked to the bar twice to ask if we could get something to drink or eat. The food is certainly good but also quite pricey. For example, we had brioche with eel for €16, four bites; tasty but pricey. Sushi ran out, that was a shame.

Super fun event, well organized with the eclipse glasses and a delicious welcome drink, very friendly and enthusiastic staff, selection menu on the field slightly smaller than normal but still plenty of room! I hadn't expected there to be so much space left with so many chairs; in short, a fantastic experience and evening!

It was my first time there. The security guards are truly the friendliest ever. Had a nice evening and a solar eclipse. The DJ could have played a bit better.

The food was tasty, but unfortunately, for us, that did not outweigh the price and the service. We paid an extremely high amount for relatively small portions, meaning the price-quality ratio was not balanced for us. Additionally, the service left much to be desired. Every time, we had to search for a staff member ourselves to order something or ask questions. We waited 20 minutes for our first drink order to be taken. We had to ask for the menu ourselves after 30 minutes. We had to wait well over 40 minutes for a bottle of wine, and the food also took a long time to arrive, even though we only shared a few (cold) starters. During the meal, no one came to ask if everything was to our liking, and our glasses were not refilled, nor were we asked if we wanted another drink. As a result, we did not feel truly welcome or seen as guests. Eventually, we spoke to the manager about this. When we discussed our experience, the explanation given was that it was busy. 'That it suddenly cleared up'... We did not consider that a suitable excuse. We had already made a reservation on Tuesday for Friday, when the weather forecast indicated it would be nice. In our opinion, the crowds seemed inadequately managed, causing the service to fall short. As a gesture of goodwill, she did offer us a bottle of wine, a gesture we appreciated. Unfortunately, we then had to wait nearly half an hour for that bottle of wine as well. To us, that clearly illustrated how the service went throughout the entire evening. It is a shame, because the quality of the food was good despite the extremely small portions (see eel on toast). With better service, better-trained staff, and a price that better reflects what you get, the overall experience would be much more pleasant.

Great location, looks good. Tasty items on the not very extensive menu (but that’s not a problem, just practical). Recommendation: purchase better knives as soon as possible. These don't cut well. The waitress said they were on order. To which we think: you’ve been here for a few years, just drive to Ikea and buy some knives. It doesn't all have to be *so* complicated. Furthermore, it's a shame that our drinks fell over twice while being served. I understand that it is super difficult to find good staff, but then supervise them. It wasn't fun for this young girl either. And take the wind and tall glasses into account: they tip over in no time.

Fine place, as is well known. The food is expensive, simply not tasty, and seems prepared without too much attention. It looks nice, but 28 euros for a piece of meat with something indefinable underneath as a sauce, and not a single vegetable... a shame: a missed opportunity!

Super spot, lovely view of the water! Thanks to the windbreaks, you sit nicely sheltered when it gets a bit windy. The menu is absolutely extensive enough, and every dish has far exceeded my expectations so far. The price-quality ratio is nicely balanced; the brisket, steak, oysters, and the loaded fries with truffle are my favorites! So compliments to the kitchen team, but the service is also really top-notch: super friendly, helpful, and attentive. Keep up the good work!!

We had reserved a table on the terrace, but due to poor weather, Sunset had already changed this to the restaurant. The menu is limited, but fitting for the Sunset ambiance. The selection is varied. And most importantly: of good quality! Good service, attentive assistance from friendly staff. The only point for improvement: the double espresso could be stronger.

It was a really nice concept; you walk in, scan the QR code, and have a fun evening with a drink and friends. Now it has become so incredibly commercial again, which is just a real shame. I wish them all the best, but they could really post on social media that it is closed to guests or full when there are only events. Some people come from far away just to have a drink and enjoy the sunset because the location is beautiful, but to arrive and hear that everything is fully booked and there is no place left to sit is just very disappointing. I think they could take some advice into account regarding that, perhaps putting something up so people can see or check it. Otherwise, it is okay, even though you get forgotten quickly by the staff or it takes a long time before you can order something because you get put in a forgotten corner. Making something that was such a fun concept so big again doesn't always have a positive effect.

Great place, nice music from the DJ... though it was a bit too loud. Had a good meal. The steak was tender and tasty but not really hot, just lukewarm. That was the case for four of us. What I find a shame is that you charge 7.50 for water. We had 37.50 in water costs on the bill. I think that's ridiculous.

Well, I liked it better back then. It used to be low-key, much cozier. Now it's becoming more of a see-and-be-seen place. Unfortunately, the service also left something to be desired. We waited an hour and a half for our food. Then, for €30, you get a rather small piece of steak. The explanation we were given was that the kitchen hadn't expected this level of busyness. I found that a strange excuse, especially since you often have to reserve a week in advance. Surely you know roughly how many guests to expect by then. The bread with dip was also disappointing. It turned out to be bread with butter that wasn't very flavorful and a simple olive oil. The wind wasn't blowing in the right direction either; the food blew right off my plate, so those windbreaks don't do much good. The dishes are tasty, though. There is nothing to complain about there. It is a shame, though, that Stelz & Flow are off the menu..

We ate here last night. It is a beautiful location, that is one thing for sure. The service was reasonable. When serving the starter, one dish was forgotten. We had each chosen our own dish. So three of us had our food, but one didn't. It was brought quickly when we asked, and an apology was offered. Clearing the table after the first course took a long time. Main course: meat and fish. Good and tasty. Dessert: cheesecake ran out and the apple pie was not fresh, dry and hard; a scoop of ice cream that should have been with one of the apple slices was served separately and too late. I found the music terrible and monotonous. It is a shame that it is run by young people and not one of the owners is present. Also, someone went to get a drink with a colleague or friend with the guests while she was serving and people were sitting waiting; then sit out of sight. Despite the beautiful location, all four of us agree that we won't be going back anytime soon.

Sunset Bar is without a doubt one of the most beautiful spots in Alphen aan den Rijn. The location by the lake is stunning and the atmosphere is amazing. I have enjoyed coming here for years for a drink and some snacks. In fact, I have recommended this place so often that friends of mine even come from other cities to Alphen just to have a drink here. Unfortunately, I have had several unpleasant experiences with the service of some female staff members. For example: on a very hot day, I was out running and had run out of water. I walked inside and asked if I could buy a glass of water. I was told quite curtly that they were not open yet and did not sell water. Of course, I understand that opening hours apply, but at a moment like that, a simple glass of tap water could have made a big difference. It costs almost nothing, but it shows that a business cares about its guests – especially if it is someone who has enjoyed coming here for years. I still find the location fantastic and hope that in the future, more attention will be paid to hospitality.

Had a veeeeery delicious lunch, stunning location by the Zegerplas, pleasantly arranged seating, and a beautiful location for parties in the party greenhouse, and of woohoo the friendly staff, so it was and is top-notch.

I was asked a little too often if we wanted another drink, even when our glasses were still full. Otherwise, a very nice place and friendly staff.

The staff is very friendly. We ate here on a day when it was still 30 degrees outside. Unfortunately, there was no shade left, so we sat in the full sun. The drinks were tasty and the service was otherwise fine. What we did find disappointing, however, was that the water offered upon being seated turned out to cost €7.50 for 750 ml. Moreover, when we ordered another bottle later, it turned out to be sparkling instead of still water. Of course, we could have pointed that out immediately, so that is partly our own responsibility. It wasn't until we checked the bill again in the car that we saw we had paid a total of €15 for water. We found that quite pricey, especially considering the hot weather and the fact that we had also ordered several other drinks. We thought that was a shame, because otherwise it was a pleasant experience.

Fine for having a drink. It is getting more and more pricey though. You pay the same price whether you have to get your own drinks or if you are served on the terrace.

I deliberately waited a while before writing a review. This is the third time I have eaten here. And honestly, at the time of writing, you are eating the best steak in Alphen aan den Rijn here. It truly melts in your mouth. The texture, the taste are amazing! In addition, the setting with the lake you overlook is picture-perfect! They have a beautiful and calming interior. And they play quiet music in the background. All in all, a very pleasant experience. One I hope to experience many more times.

Very simple food for too much money. The location is beautiful but that’s not all… Ordered a ‘sleek’ = max 100 grams €28, salmon roll €24 without side dishes, not even a lettuce leaf, 5 prawns with skin on. Fried in oil and difficult to peel. Clothes were covered in red oil stains. No side dish either, not even a fingertip with lemon to clean hands. All in all a farce for 170.00… We certainly won’t be doing this again.

Went for lunch on the new terrace, but unfortunately it was a bit dirty... The table was full of dead bugs and dust, and it wasn't cleaned either. We ourselves were covered in flies, spiders, and many other critters the whole time. Not a fresh feeling while eating; the parasol wasn't positioned quite right by the tree since everything ended up on the table. The food was very tasty, but whether it was fully worth the price, in my opinion, it wasn't.

We always enjoyed coming here. A nice, casual atmosphere, laid-back and no fuss. We had a spontaneous bite to eat yesterday. It was the last time. A plain hamburger for 16 euros that was just small and not very special. And then the Burrata. 14 euros for a ball of cheese with a cracker... Also, I believe we were served by 3 or 4 different people. And they could certainly use some more experience. Then you order fries on the side for 5 euros and that gets forgotten too. We also had to ask for the cutlery. No, the price-quality ratio is nowhere to be found. Sunset is fine for a drink, but for food we will go to another place. All in all, things haven't improved.

The food isn't bad, but the portions are ridiculously small for the price. We paid well over 80 euros for two people just to have to grab some fries at the local snack bar on the way back. Furthermore, we got strange looks when we asked them to clean the table.
