I'm easily satisfied when I dine out, but this visit left much to be desired. I'd already checked the menu on their website beforehand because I'm a vegetarian and wanted to see if they could offer me something tasty. It turned out the menu wasn't the same as the one presented to me at the table... I was forced to choose something I didn't fancy, as there are few vegetarian dishes, so the selection is limited. They often had to turn me down the beer menu. The best thing to do was choose three different options, hoping they had one in stock. While they did have non-alcoholic beer, they couldn't offer any. The bread board contained two measly pieces of bread with two spreads, which were gone in one bite. Only the main course salad had ample vegetables; with the other dishes, you had to search for a single lettuce leaf or something. I ordered the dessert crème brûlée with raspberry sorbet ice cream. I asked if the whipped cream could be omitted, and they said no problem because it wasn't included. I got crème brûlée with vanilla ice cream and whipped cream... I ate the crème brûlée after returning the ice cream because I'd ordered sorbet (according to the menu!). They charged me full price! Well, as you can imagine, I definitely won't be going back. What a shame!

When we still had no food after 45 minutes, it turned out that we had simply been forgotten. "A technical thing - apologies". Then we left hungry, after paying for the drink that we, without apology, had to pay for. Too bad. So no opinion about the food, because we didn't get any. But the service was substandard.

Definitely come back to eat here! Especially at the great annual Culemborg Blues Festival (end of August). Had a delicious beer for a very reasonable price! * Furthermore, I hear a very good Price-Value ratio from many Houten residents, who would like to cycle to this beautiful (three) city in half an hour! * Furthermore, very friendly & professional service by a young Indian lady! * Also a very friendly and capable manager, who provides a lot of information about tasty beers and meals, the city of Culemborg and especially the Blues Festival! Keep it up!!

Cozy place, nice service from early morning to late afternoon

Pure drinks, may have been a bit too busy, reserved in advance, tables were still where drinks were, this could have been better prepared, service friendly, but very young, would expect a combination with some experience, especially on a sunny Friday afternoon

Good selection of beers and nice atmosphere. The servers often make mistakes in charging the bill so watch out when paying. I've been stationed in the neighborhood for a few weeks and went to this cafe three times. Two of those times they overcharged us on drinks by adding things we either didn't order or ordered first but were told it's out of stock. They were nice about it and gave us the money back but if you've had a few you might miss it.

Great place to have coffee with a walking club. Terrace was very dirty with paper etc. on the ground.

The food was excellent, but it was a pity that no one came after dinner to ask if we wanted to eat anything else. Later we received coffee and a desert at our request, but the plates were not cleared

Large burgers and salads with a great beer selection. Lots of outdoor seating.

It was annoying that there was smoking on the terrace. Especially because we were eating there. There was also an ashtray on the table. A reason for us not to come back there again.

Relax on the terrace of this café. Both sun and shade areas. Inside is a brown café with a cozy interior. The dishes are good and the service is friendly. You have a good view over the market square of Culemborg.

We went here for watching the NL - England game. The tv should have been a bit bigger, but the overall experience was good. Staff was adequate.

without a good reason we were not served anymore on kingsday evening. and in contrary of what was said below by the owner, no explanation was given at that time. we just ordered 5 times karmeliet and were not served..

This place had a wonderfully cozy atmosphere with delicious food. We have, among other things, the appetizers, but also the nachos. This was simply indescribably delicious. In addition to the food, the service was also excellent. Especially Eline, who helped us. Compliments!

Top staff who go above and beyond, these people are very friendly despite it being so busy. And then there's always some whiner who complains that the cappuccino doesn't come, Unbelievable !!! So top staff.

Upon entering the center of Culemborg, this was the first restaurant I encountered. I was sitting outside on the terrace, people looked at me like: you're not from here. The food was meh, I had two croquettes on brown bread and the croquettes were baked too long and therefore too dark in color. Not recommended to go again.

It goes without saying that you can choose from many types of beer :) Very friendly staff, who have clearly paid attention to "which beer is which", they really know what they are selling. The food and drinks also came quickly. Good timing between starter and main course. Very neat! Fortunately, you don't "need" for the special heavy beer, but they also have - regular - beer and driver-friendly versions. The food was good, admittedly the choice is somewhat limited. The gatekeeper burger was good, and certainly enough, I would definitely come back for it if I ever end up in Culemborg again.

We found a great opportunity for a stop for a delicious drink on the terrace of the Poortwachter.

3 dishes were gone (we heard this later when we ordered). Ate salmon, tasteless. For dessert coffee with truffles. .you guessed it. Truffles too. Too bad about this.

We liked coming here in the past. Cozy cafe, with good food and tasty beers. This may still be the case, but extremely sad service, not at all alert despite the fact that the crowds were not large. Too many staff. Absolutely not recommended!

Had dinner with the group of 4 last night. Smoked salmon was delicious, but I didn't think the pesto was appropriate. Map is not extensive, simple and clear. Don't expect culinary delights. Excellent food for the price. If you like beer, you've come to the right place. Service was fast and friendly.

Delicious coffee and great beers! The typical atmosphere of an old brown Belgian pub with very friendly staff. The location is centuries old and you can almost feel the history!

De Vlaamsche stoof (5sterren)was geweldig! In combi met friet en schaaltje salade goed. De fish en chips ( 0 sterren) was helaas een aanfluiting. Hard gefrituurd en meer paneermeel dan vis. Daardoor Veel te droge en harde korst. Niet te nassen. Wel vriendelijk personeel. Leuke ambiance .

Sadly the last few years service is really inconsistent and clearly not a priority. When some of the older staff are working you can have a great visit. Beers and food are amazing, getting them on your table is a challenge. Especially when sitting outside

Goede ligging op de markt in culemborg

Dit is een gezellig, bruin eetcafé aan de markt in Culemborg. 🍻 Als echte spelfanaat, werd ik bij binnenkomst al aangenaam verrast. Op het eerste tafeltje dat ik zag, lagen een aantal spelletjes. Ons gezelschap kwam enkel om iets te eten. 🍽️ Maar, het idee dat er tijdens het borrelen een spel gespeeld kan worden, gaf me direct al een positieve indruk. 🧩🎲🃏♟️ Aangezien ik bij onze aankomst vrijwel meteen naar het toilet wilde, was dit mijn eerste stop. 🚽 Het kleinste kamertje was echter niet erg proper & stonk een beetje. 💩💨 Ook kwam ik er te laat achter dat het w.c.-papier op was. 🧻❌ Vooral dit laatste vind ik erg teleurstellend, zodra me dit overkomt... 😩 Na het bezoek aan het privaat, nam ik plaats aan onze tafel. We hadden van tevoren gereserveerd, maar ook zonder reservering was er genoeg plaats voor ons om te zitten. Het viel me gelijk op dat het kaarsje dat op tafel stond, niet brandde. 🕯️ ...Net als de kaarsjes op iedere andere tafel op de begane grond. Sterker nog: Er zaten helemaal geen kaarsjes meer in de houdertjes, deze waren allemaal opgebrand. Zodra ik onze serveerster op het kaarsje dat op onze tafel stond aansprak, verving ze deze direct. Het nieuwe kaarsje kwam al brandend bij ons terug. 🔥 Dit restaurant bezigt geen volle menukaart. Ook zijn de gerechten die erop staan, niet heel erg spannend. Voor de prijs die ervoor betaald mag worden, is 't echter geen hele slechte deal. Ook de bediening is enkel goed genoeg. Het personeel is erg jong. Ze zien werk niet liggen & er wordt -mijns inziens- niet efficiënt gewerkt. Neem bijvoorbeeld de situatie die ik zojuist heb omschreven: de kaarsjes die op iedere tafel vervangen mogen worden. De kelnerin verving alleen het kaarsje dat op onze tafel stond. Het was efficiënter geweest als ze meteen alle kaarsjes had vervangen & aangestoken op alle tafels had teruggezet. Daarentegen was het personeel erg jong & mogen ze dit nog leren. De jongedame die ons hielp, was echter erg enthousiast & wilde werken. Aangezien mijn ervaring met de huidige generatie werkende jongeren vaak anders is, vind ik dit al een positief punt. 🙌🏻✨💯 Ze had ook een collega die haar sporadisch kwam helpen, maar hij was niet erg communicatief vaardig. Al-met-al is deze plek echt wel het proberen waard. En, zolang je geen haute cuisine verwacht, zal je niet teleurgesteld worden. 😊

Lekker eten, maar helaas is het al 20 jaar lastig om boven aandacht van iemand van het personeel te krijgen.

UPDATE: Inmiddels wachten we ook al een week op reactie op de mail. Wij komen hier al jaren. Was in het begin erg goed maar de laatste tijd is het bijzonder slecht. Gister twee uur op ons eten moeten wachten om vervolgens met voedselvergiftiging thuis te komen. Het is een gezellig cafe maar er moet iets veranderen.

Op deze regenachtige zondag was Culemborg stil en had een bijna verlaten sfeer. Na bij een ander ethablisement op nogal on-gastvrije manier te zijn behandeld, kwamen wij gelukkig bij De Poortwachter terecht. De gastvrije ontvangst, zette de toon voor ons verblijf daar. Echter, ook het eten en drinken waren goed & heerlijk. Zeer aangenaam en voor herhaling vatbaar. Overigens, het oude centrum van Culemborg is fotogeniek en een bezoekje waard.

Très joli endroit avec une jolie déco où nous avons bien mangé. Le serveur qui c'est occupé de nous parlait bien le français cela était top. Vous pouvez y aller les yeux fermés. Les Marseillais

Menukaart is anders dan online (erg jammer als je voor de spareribs komt en die er niet zijn), vervolgens 2 uur later beiden met zware buikpijn en misselijkheid thuis. Overigens geen toiletpapier bij de wc & en rook niet fris. Voor mij nooit meer.

Jeetje! Wat moet je hier achterlijk lang wachten op je drankjes. Ruim 25 minuten voordat je überhaupt aandacht krijgt :(

Koffie gedronken. Niet gegeten Geen aanrader. Toilet niet schoon. Geen papieren om handen te drogen. Tafels plakken. Jammer

Cele mai multe sortimente de bere la un loc, mi-a fost foarte greu sa aleg, cu siguranta o sa mai revin. Recomand cu placere!

Leuke plek. Maar een grote tafel uitserveren en dan de bestelde drankjes vergeten. Helaas niet de eerste keer.

Smakelijk gegeten. Wel jammer dat de tijd tussen bestellen en serveren enorm lang was, terwijl het aanvankelijk nog niet te druk was. Het voorgerecht kwam vlot, maar daarna nog ruim een uur op het hoofdgerecht gewacht. Een geweldig uitgebreide bierkaart! En vriendelijk personeel.

Zeer leuke gelegenheid voor hapje en drankje. Jonge met krulhaar ( sorry dat ik zijn naam niet ) wist enorm veel van bier soorten en goed advies gekregen . Super vriendelijk

Warme chocolademelk gedronken. Kleine gezellige oude locatie. Sfeervol. Wordt snel geholpen.

Prima kroeg met lekker veel bieren op de kaart. Hapje eten was prima maar ook weer niet overweldigend. Sfeer is hartstikke leuk, dus top voor zo even door de week!

Our favorite place in Culemborg to get beer and bitterballen or just to hang out with friends.. Staff are always friendly and the place always packs when weekend, definitely reserved for saturday night dinner..

Wij dronken hier 's avonds een glaasje op het terras. De wij was lekker, de bediening vriendelijk.

Heerlijk gegeten, vriendelijk personeel. Ik kom zeker nog een keer langs wanneer ik in de buurt ben!

De menukaart was een stuk eenvoudiger als wat op de website vermeld staat maar hebben desondanks een keuze kunnen maken met een secar salade en garnalen kroketjes. Goed toeven in de schaduw op het terras met een briesje.

Twaalfuurtje gehad. De entourage is goed, personeel vriendelijk. Maar dat twaalfuurtje had echt beter gekund. Onze gast had een uitsmijter, die mooi was opgediend met wat salade. Het twaalfuurtje was karig en saai, de soep was koud (het vet was zelfs al gestold, echt té erg voor woorden) en eigenlijk was alleen de standaard kroket eetbaar te noemen. Jammer, het geld niet waard.
