Umeno is a small, family operated, really intimate, with just seven tables, renowned traditional Japanese restaurant. This is why you have to book in advance. And will be very pleased once accepted. Umeno was actually the first Japanese traditional restaurant opened up in the Netherlands.. Umeno offers two traditional Japanese Artisan menus per evening. With seasonal changes of course. Your personal service will be helpfully assisted in most languages by the sons of the family. Mother is looking after the fresh products arrival & numbers. While Father & Chef is expertly preparing his latest culinary creations on the very moment. Please be welcome to enjoy this intimate and refined traditional Japanese culinary experience. Highly recommended! Kees van der Meulen

Probably one of Amsterdam’s lesser-known izakaya-style spots, and a little outside the city centre — but easily one of the best I’ve visited recently. Umeno has this lovely old-school charm; we even had to take off our shoes to sit in one of the four private booths. We went for the set menu, and I had the sake pairing. Every dish that came out was beautifully prepared and full of flavour, with super friendly and attentive service throughout. The highlights for me were a unique tuna dish with avocado and raw egg yolk that you mix together at the table, and the incredibly fresh selection of fish. Highly recommended if you want authentic Japanese in a cosy, traditional setting.

Umeno is like a magical hidden portal to Japan. We had an amazing Omakase experience here. Everything reminded us our visit to Japan. Very tasty, carefully crafted and balanced. It’s not easy to get this authenticity in Netherlands. I’d definitely come again. Arigato gozaimashita!

Great dinner at Umeno. Friendly staff and definitely appreciated that they’re able to speak Dutch too. This place only accepts a select amount of customers per evening making it a lovely experience. I love bluefin tuna but many courses consisted of this type of fish so ultimately it was a bit overpowering. Overall I did like the combination of dishes served. The experience takes about 3.5h

I can say with enormous conviction that Umeno, owned by chef Atsu and his wonderful sons, has been a fantastic restaurant for years and is in complete balance in atmosphere, service and unparalleled pure Japanese food with the freshest ingredients imaginable. In a restaurant that promotes appropriate humility to ultimate beauty in all its faces, it also requires intelligence from the guest to view the limitations of simplicity as an honorable strength. Umeno is a pure Japanese festival 🎈

What a gem in Amsterdam. Hidden in a residential area, with an unassuming appearance that you might just pass by. But once inside it quickly becomes clear, a Japanese interior with the feeling that you are a guest in someone's home. The menu was fantastic, one delicious dish after another was served. And the eye wants, and got, something too. Super friendly service and how nice is it that a restaurant only receives about 20 guests? It contributed to a very tasteful and atmospheric evening. Highly recommended. Check the menu in advance because this is for the enthusiast, there are no options for diet or allergies.

I've been hearing a lot about Umeno lately, so I finally decided to give it a try. The method was a bit unusual and interesting as you can only make reservations via WhatsApp. I was not disappointed in the quality of the food. Especially the nigiri was very delicious. The interior of the restaurant had a nice atmosphere, with many wooden interiors and traditional music playing. The clerk looked like the chef's son. Overall it was a special experience. If you have time and want to eat traditional Japanese food, please give Umeno a try.

I went through a phase where I watched a lot of food review videos and used to be a bit skeptical about people getting teary-eyed from how good something tasted. But when we had the first bite of the tuna-avocado tartare, I understood—it was a natural response. The rest of the menu, the staff and the atmosphere was also amazing but the tartare was definitely the highlight.

I visited this restaurant today through a friend's recommendation, and it was a fantastic experience! Don't be fooled by the exterior decor of the restaurant. What is prepared and served inside is of extraordinary quality. The sushi was delicious, and the fish literally melted in your mouth. It's a charming family restaurant where the father prepares the sushi, and the sons serve it with detailed explanations. In short, a fantastic experience and definitely worth repeating!

Behind a sliding door and a curtain in a residential area in Amsterdam, you will find a humble Japanese eatery that feels like a little piece of Japan! Do not expect a fancy restaurant, where the chef gives free rein to his creativity, but rather a UNIQUE place with a traditional Japanese living room feeling, where a very experienced chef prepares traditional Japanese dishes with craftsmanship. Highly recommended for those looking for authentic Japanese food in Amsterdam! 🍣Food 4/5 In advance you can choose menu A (8 items) or menu B (9 items). Allergies cannot be taken into account, which is a shame; I was therefore unable to taste 2 parts. The food I was able to taste was generally well prepared. These were the corridors: 🍴Amuse Octopus marinated and roasted in brown tea - cucumber beautifully sliced - on the cucumber sweet-sour plum - umeboshi). Octopus as an ingredient is not a favorite of ours, but I could taste that it was well prepared! 🍴Sashimi with delicious fresh wasabi 2x whitefish (bream and sea bass) 3x tuna in three different degrees of fat content 1x salmon 1x shrimp (I couldn't taste it because I'm allergic) 🍴 Fish soup with mainly shrimp as the main component: Unfortunately, I am allergic to shrimp, so I couldn't eat this. 🍴Salmon with spring onion and miso sauce, deliciously sweet. This was a favorite. 🍴Cod in miso with parmesan cheese and chili pepper with bonito flakes - This was also a favorite. It reminded me a bit of Peruvian “conchitas a la parmezana”. Mildly sweet, grill flavor. 🍴Sushi - Calamari -Yellow tale - Flambéed salmon - Medium fat tuna with a mild-sweet soy sauce (favorite) 🍴Miso soup 🍴Maki with finely chopped fatty tuna and shiso 🍴Homemade green tea ice cream - looked like a "creamier" shaved ice, but as a scoop! Tasty! Critical point: the additions such as whipped cream and the waffle cookie did not taste homemade, which detracted from the overall experience of the evening. It would be better if these elements were left out or replaced with home-cooked/traditional options. 🥂Drink -Sakaya Hachibei Junmai Ginjo Isenishiki sake - delicious! Mildly sweet, but with a clean, fresh and dry aftertaste. Recommended! A pot of green tea for the rest of the evening, which was mild. Then a pot of Japanese brown tea with roasted rice as an undertone, perfect! 🏠Atmosphere 4/5 With five tables and a mini bar with 5 chef seats, it offers an intimate setting. The atmosphere is modest and traditional, with a living room feeling due to the peace and quiet. It really is like stepping into a piece of Japan, hidden behind a curtain, which makes for a unique experience. The smart design, where you cannot see outside, contributes to the feeling of “being somewhere else”! Critical point: At two tables, one person sits looking at a wall, like my husband. He thought this was a shame, because he missed a large part of the atmosphere in the restaurant. We would be willing to pay more to sit at the chef's table for the full experience. You can now sit with the chef on request, but unfortunately this is not mentioned anywhere. 👋🏼Service 5/5 The team provides Japanese service par excellence: polite, well-trained and very service-oriented! I appreciated all the little details, like the logo on the base of the wine glass facing me. Small critical point: Personally, I think it is a shame that the "remote" service continues in their role - it is delivery - explain what it is and leave immediately - do not walk around on the floor, but keep an eye on the restaurant from a distance, which affects the personal interaction somewhat limited. 🟢Conclusion Umeno is highly recommended for those looking for authentic Japanese food in Amsterdam! All in all a beautiful business, unique in its kind and certainly an asset to Amsterdam. 4 Google stars reflects my overall feeling.

This place is 5 stars all in all. The food was incredible and authentic, you will only get quality ingredients here. The server is SO attentive, the moment you’re finished they are immediately aware of it, and they don’t interrupt you at all. If you want to dine here you MUST make a dinner reservation, and the time slot to make one is only on the 1st and 25th of the month. You essentially cannot choose the dishes because it is omakase, but you can choose from 1 of 2 course sets. What an experience. Absolutely worth it.

Food: sashimi and sushi is great - prepared by the chef with love - on the spot However, overpriced to what you get. 2 dishes are very simple, tiny and cheap. Soup and other dish with egg also is very basic, so the price for dinner should top at 65/pp max and not 95.. Service: friendly, explaining the menu Interior: dirty and dated - that doesn’t make me willing to return in a heartbeat. Also the restaurant has an unpleasant dump smell. Also, very unusual customa: -in the menu it states that no perfumes allowed - inform about this before -only payment via bank transfer (tikkie) or cash. -They asked us to remove our shoes for the particular table we were sitting at… that was strange when all the other guests have the shoes on.

I recommend getting the reservation as soon as it opens. Hard to get a table as there is limit amount of table (2x2 at the bar, a table that can fit up to 3 I suppose, 2 small 2person table and a possible big table able to fit 8). As they have 2 times a month, they release their reservation for the coming month. Their dinner starts at 19:00 the amount of courses of the menu is unknown, on regular days they have also à la carte. There is only 1 chef for the cold side and 1 chef for the hot side. Also, when sushi is served, it is hard to get other tables in between as it is 1 sushi 1 course, making consumption fast. The interior is dated. It is lacking in maintenance, but it still feels cozy as the lights are dimmed. Limit drink choices; therefore, they are open to bringing outside drinks for a fee. The bar counter is reserved for regular guests, and if they are non or non-requested, they will be able to serve other guests. The staff is not highly trained, not on fine dining level, making their price point highly reached. It is better to do an izakaya to lower the level of expectation of service than an omakase, but not meet the full level. Also, they do not really explain the dishes like where the fish comes from or anything like that what you will expect of omakase. I will say their sashimi is good; their fish is good, but I am not sure their knife skill is up to the level. Their sushi rice is good. Also, strangely, is that their soy sauce is a bit sweet. The good thing is fresh ground wasabi, what I less like is that they stated when requested for extra things (like wasabi) there can be cost to it. What I do not like, it seems like cannot get extra pepper and salt to your dish. There is clearly different in level between the hot and cold dishes. The dishes are not fully though about. Like the soup with egg white with truffle, as the soup is very delicate flavors with the strong flavors of the truffle over ruling the whole dish but if you cut the big disk in smaller pieces it comes in better harmony. What you also can notice is how you get treated between regular guest and non-regular ones. like extra courses and options. Not judges, as I am not sure how they have come to an agreement. But I suppose all guests should be treated the same and if some do needs to pay more and some not a problem but should be an option. I recommend they should have fixed time slots to get all people in the same time as omakase does. Also, clearly the guests are not familiar with Japanese etiquette in omakase or just in general Japanese environment. Like minimal perfume use, not talking loud. I think for the price is just too little, we even went to snack bar. 2.5H lasted the omakase. There is no mention of if we are full or not as normal omakase does. Will I come back not really, this is because you need to book way in advance, the quality, price is just a bit too high for what you get and service is basic. 3.5/10

We tried out the omakase menu, which was quite nice. The ingredients were so fresh and high quality. They served freshly grated wasabi! The first 2 dishes were really good, loved the sashimi and the tuna and avocado salad. I didn’t like the truffle steamed egg and tempura dish as much. At last the sushi was all really good! The atmosphere was really quiet and the chef didn’t talk as much. The service could have been better. But overall the experience was nice and the food was really good!

This is one of the oldest Japanese restaurants in Amsterdam in a residential area near Olympic Stadion. Currently run by a talented chef, Atsu, who creates authentic Japanese culinary experience for a happy few who join him in this tiny restaurant. The flavors and the quality of ingredients are unparalleled. In his chefs menu he combines warm dishes with an amazing sushi selection. Our last meal consisted of a few appetizers (sashimi, king crab, chawanmoushi, soba met sea urchin) and around 10 types of nigiri. This is a real treat. The price we paid for the menu was around 90 euros which is a steal considering the quality and the ingredients you get in the menu. We have been visiting this restaurant for many years now so we can speak of amazing consistency. Allow the chef prepare his dishes, which can be time consuming, but your patience will be rewarded. Highly recommended for the lovers of Japanese food!

The food was exceptional, with standout dishes including the fishcake and tuna (toro). The fishcake had a perfect texture and was full of flavor, while the toro was buttery and used in various ways. A nice addition was the uni (sea urchin) in combination with the oyster. The service was also great, with the chef and staff being attentive and knowledgeable about each dish. However, the only criticism I had was that the courses were served quite quickly after each other. This may be the norm during an omakase experience, but it did make it feel a bit rushed at times. Overall, I highly recommend this omakase experience for anyone who loves high-quality sushi and Japanese cuisine. Overall, this is the best place for traditional Japanese food in Amsterdam.

The main criticism of the few negative reviews found here all seem to stem from a misunderstanding of the style of this restaurant. This is not just any restaurant where you come in to grab a quick bite and fill your stomach. Umeno offers a truly immersive and authentically Japanese experience. The ambience is warm, quiet and intimate. The ingredients are of very high quality and incredibly skilfully put together in beautiful, delicious and refined dishes, many of which are prepared by the chef in front of the eyes of the guests.

We went to yamazato because we love japanese cuisine. There’s something deeply satisfying about enjoying Japanese cuisine — the balance of flavors, the attention to detail, and the harmony between simplicity and elegance. Whether it’s the delicate taste of sushi, sashimi, or the tenderness of the wagyu beef, each dish tells a story rooted in tradition and seasonality. It’s not just a meal — it’s an experience and special thanks to Chihomi for making this experience possible. We will come back again!

We were the first table to arrive when the restaurant opened that afternoon, and the dishes were served smoothly. The service was excellent, though the interior was a bit oily. As for the food, we ordered eel rice and curry pork cutlet rice, which were both quite good. Compared to Dusseldorf, I heard more Japanese, which made it feel like visiting Japan. :)
