The woman behind the counter was extremely unfriendly, genuinely reluctant. And she showed it, a horrible person. Working without gloves, wearing nail polish, she came across as very professional.

Presail, August 19, 2025. After spending the afternoon strolling past beautiful sailing ships, we were ready for something to eat and drink. We hadn't made a reservation, but there was still a table available on the terrace. The food was delicious, and the shrimp salad was generous. My wife had a giant cod fillet, and I had a plaice fillet fried in butter. Despite the crowds, the staff was extremely friendly and did their best to please the guests, which they certainly succeeded in doing. In short, highly recommended; we will definitely be back.

Friendly staff. The kibbeling lacked flavor, and there were also fish fingers in the container. I found the price of €9 for a container of kibbeling very high. I had a shrimp croquette. It tasted good, but the croquette floated in the container, which was covered in a layer of oil. A real shame, and definitely not recommended.

A restaurant you shouldn't miss when visiting IJmuiden...because eating fresh, perfectly prepared fish is an experience you'll have when you dine at this restaurant!

Not busy, but a long wait, but it should all be fine. They messed with a whole sea bass that should have been a fillet. Money down the drain! Never coming back!

Eight of us arrived late at Gerard's, but we were immediately warmly welcomed. The portions were generous. They don't skimp on the gram here! The shrimp pasta was especially delicious: lots of shrimp, lots of flavor. The cheerful and attentive staff made the evening complete. We all went home with full stomachs and a smile 😊

An excellent choice for super-fresh North Sea fish and seafood. It's a shame the inexperience of the staff spoils the excellent ingredients. I recommend eating on the terrace, buying from the counter or self-service, the "kibelling," "lekkerbek," and their delicious fries (the best I've had in a long time).

We had dinner with four people. It took over three hours for our appetizer, main course, and dessert. Ridiculously long waits between meals. There was little communication about why it was taking so long. We ended up having to order from the menu for dessert ourselves! Unfortunately, I didn't feel good about it this time!

Mediocre fish, highly priced, mediocre service

My husband and I had Kibbeling this afternoon. Terrible, the crust was way too hard. Too bad, it was perfect last year.

Exactly what you wouldn't expect in a run-down industrial estate. We had delicious, fresh fish. It's a bit pricey, but it's worth it.

We had a delicious fish meal. It was well prepared.

We didn't eat in the restaurant, but on the terrace. The food was good, the service a bit less so—not bad or anything, but it was significantly better with the luxury guests who had ordered from the restaurant's menu.

We ordered kibbeling and a "fried bekje" to take away. They were deep-fried by employee A. After fifteen minutes, employee B removed them from the fryer. Both the kibbeling and the "fried bekje" were very dark and completely warped. They then poured a huge amount of salt over them. When we pointed out that the fish was far too brown, almost black, employee B walked away, possibly to discuss the matter. After five minutes without any action, we left without the fish. A terrible performance from this restaurant.

A very nice place: on the right, a shop selling fresh fish and fried dishes, and on the left, a cozy restaurant with a surprisingly well-stocked menu. And not to be overlooked: the excellent wine list, with many French wines and a few Italian gems. Fish of the day: turbot, brill (served with a white wine sauce), and slightly larger-than-average medium sole. I chose the brill (my husband chose the sea bass fillets), not expecting it to be such a large fish. Luckily, I was able to take what I didn't finish home. Both dishes were expertly prepared, the fish succulent and full of flavor. The staff is very professional and friendly. We will definitely be back!

We regularly drive especially from Krommenie to this fish specialist. Unfortunately, today was the first time a kibbeling was a disappointment, double fried and seasoned differently. Well, 1 mistake is allowed, next time better.

There is absolutely nothing right about the price. On the website it says eel sandwich €8.50 but if you go to the store to get it you pay €10.50. At Kaatje you pay a large kibbeling €8 and at Van Es €18. How are you screwed.

Despite the fact that it was certainly not busy, the service was very slow and rather forgetful. Had to ask 3 times where the beer was.

Sorry but Van Es is not what it used to be. Many mistakes by the service and the price-quality ratio is very poor. The shrimp cocktail (starter) took the cake....24 euros for two bites of shrimp on a mountain of green food and a disgusting ready-made blob of sauce. No, I will not go there again any time soon and I also speak for the people I was with. Entourage makes up for a lot.

Don't be alarmed by the prices. Very good fish restaurant with a fish counter. Wheelchair accessible, with a terrace. Free parking on the street. Prices are expensive. Loud music in places in the terraced area. Cold and hot dishes. Everything is fresh. Unfortunately, the service is very poor. An endless wait... 4 waiters and the restaurant only 1/4 full. The food is served without cutlery or napkins. After the meal, the plates are not cleared; we sit for 30 minutes with the plates. When we asked to pay, the waiter was very annoyed, saying he had to work a bit.

My wife and I had an amazing lunch here as an unexpected surprise. Our plans were to grab a quick bite on a very quiet Monday but we ended up spending the afternoon there and really enjoying ourselves. The service was one of the best we have had for years and the food was truly great. The freshest of fish and beautifully cooked. Nice selection of wines and a cracking dessert. Will definitely return.

We wanted to eat kibbeling with fries. The shop was already closed so they said come in to the restaurant where you can also eat it. Kibbeling was on the plate for €9 + fries. A little later we received the wrong order but quickly went back to the kitchen and finally kibbeling and fries were in front of us. To be fair. Both were delicious. Kibbeling was tender and the ravigotte sauce was also delicious. When we arrived at the cash register about an hour later we were amazed. €48 for 2x kibbeling with fries and 2x sparkling water. I personally think that is really going too far! So I would advise against it!

We were very satisfied, the portion was very good, we ate kibbeling. The young female waiter was very accommodating. The restaurant is in the harbor area, without Google Maps we would never have ended up there. We'll come back if the opportunity arises. The restaurant is beautifully furnished, the toilet is clean and everything is there.

I come in and I stand at the door for 10 minutes before someone comes to me. Fine. Finally sat down and after asking for it myself, finally received the menu. Well, everything is very expensive, but okay, maybe the service is just very good. I order and wait 45 minutes, in between I see people get up, get angry and walk away because they have been waiting for an hour. Doesn't bode well for the rest, but whatever. Ended up waiting for an hour and already asked a few times how long it would take. The last time he was promised that he would come within 3 minutes, waited 10 minutes then got up and left.

Today we visited this restaurant for the second time. Amazing. It’s our first time in Holland. Gods are cooking in the kitchen👌👌👌 The service is excellent. The chef is simply a very charming and pleasant person. Thanks everyone, I really enjoyed it. I recommend visiting.

Although the kibbeling was tasty, I want to share an unpleasant experience. I came in to order and saw prices on a screen, which later turned out to be the pick-up prices. I asked an employee if I could take a seat and she said I could. After a while she came to take my order and asked if we already knew what we wanted. I placed my order based on the menu I saw inside. Later I received 3 portions of kibbeling, 3 soft drinks and a herring sandwich, and I had to pay 76 euros. When I asked why the price was different, she said: "Those are the takeaway prices, we charge different prices for eating on site." However, she had not indicated this when I placed my order, which I found annoying, especially because it was my first time there. The food was good, but the price differences are quite large. Afterwards I read the reviews and see that this problem happened several times, but still not solved.

We had the pleasure of dining here again! The food is excellent, the atmosphere cozy and the staff friendly and knowledgeable. The only downside: it doesn't all go very smoothly (so take your time!).

I bought kibbeling, it was frozen, kibbeling not fresh, sauce had to be paid separately, I lost 36.50 euros, service was not fast, I was only helped after 10 minutes, it seemed as if they did not suit you. Never again

Super cozy relaxed atmosphere, very nicely decorated inside. You can sit inside, sit outside or just pick up something to take away. The service is very nice and everyone is super friendly. The kibbeling tastes really delicious! This is truly the tastiest kibbeling I have ever had. Tonight we leave back to Groningen, but I will definitely return to this place again. Highly recommended!

Op tip van de bediening, had ik een tarbot genomen kant en klaar met groente. En patat & salade + 1 glas rose. Koste mij € 64 wat ik wel heel veel geld vind voor 1 persoon. Ik vraag mij af hoe zij dat berekenen? En wat ik ook zo opvallend vind, de reviews worden niet door Google gecertificeerd! Hebben ze wat te verbergen soms?

This is an absolutely incredible store/restaurant. A wonderful atmosphere, the service was incredible, and the food was amazing and tasted very fresh. And I love that they have a storefront right next to it selling fresh fish, with a good variety. The servers here are some of the best in Amsterdam. Make sure you speak with Rick, absolutely knowledgeable, and a pleasure to get to meet. Definitely coming back here again.

What a lovely spot and what a good fish, absolutely great! Beyond fresh, super quality. It is located on a shabby industrial estate which looks particularly poor. Suddenly there is a colorful facade, Edith Piaf sounds and you enter a French bistro, with clinking glasses, pleasant buzz, crispy fish and crisp white wines. The outside world is quickly forgotten. What a gem!

Come there more often. Good food. Today I waited 15 minutes, people looked at me several times from the kitchen, but no help was given. No one even came to me. Finally left, other customer also left. Date: February 9 around 4:45 PM.

An absolute must for fish lovers! We absolutely loved this restaurant in Ijmuiden. The selection of fish dishes is huge and everything is freshly prepared. We had the fish platter for two and were overwhelmed by the variety and quality of the fish. The side dishes were also very tasty. The service was super attentive and friendly, and the atmosphere in the restaurant was very pleasant. We'll definitely be back!

2x fish&chips menu besteld en ook kilo verse vis om mee te nemen bij bak-afhaal afdeling, we vroegen of we het menuaan tafel mochten eten... en ja dat mocht, we gingen aan een tafel zitten maar duurde niet lang, we werden weggestuurd want tafel was gereserveerd moesten maar buiten gaan eten. (zat verder geen bord op de tafel met "gereserveerd"). Na eten wederom in de rij gestaan om bestelde vis op te halen, na ca 30 minuten wachten moest ik toch mijn verhaal kwijt, dat we ondanks zijn toestemming niet binnen mochten eten en dat ik voor eerder bestelde vis wederom moest wachten... dat het helemaal niet zo klantvriendelijk is/was en dat de zogenaamde gereserveerde tafel nog steeds leeg was. Maar hij kon het niet allemaal behabben binnen waren er 6 mensen voor de bediening en hij stond alleen voor de rest van de viswinkel.... voortaan mij niet meer gezien bij visrestaurant Gérard van Es... een teleurgestelde "vaste klant" van Gérard

We hebben de allerlekkerste en meest verse vis in tijden gegeten. Dit restaurant is een pareltje in IJmuiden! Hele vriendelijke en kundige chef, die voor ons uitgebreid de tijd nam om zijn filosofie toe te lichten. En heerlijke bijpassende wijnen. Kortom: een aanrader!

Visited twice (first day and last day in The Netherlands). Both times treated well, excellent service, delicious seafood, and handled our lack of European languages with aplomb while providing interesting insight into the business and community. Their location is less than thirty minutes from Schiphol by car and gives you the smell of the North Sea and the feel of the industry on the coast. Best view? No...but we went for the seafood and a good time, and found both with very friendly and interesting staff. Kudos to the chef and the wait staff for a great time and great tastes!

Got a fish dish for 2 people at €50. It's unbelievable how little you get. Van Es says after my complaint. This is the best fish and therefore €50. Advice, get it elsewhere, this really goes beyond all limits. Very unfortunate. When I called to discuss my complaint, there was no room for feedback. Photo says enough. €50! I expected more from this case. Just like trying to find a solution with a regular customer. But unfortunately that also made no sense.
