My first time trying Indonesian food and it was so good!

An assistance dog for the blind is refused at Waroeng EmJay. This is discriminatory and prohibited by law.

The food was exceptionally good. It was hot outside today, and it was a bit warm upstairs without air conditioning, but when the windows were opened, it was great! I had the rames emjay with rendang (nice and spicy) and daging balado (secretly even spicier :)) very tasty and plenty on the plate. You want to eat more, but it's better not to ;) thanks!

My daughter had been raving about Indonesian food for ages, and I never understood the hype until she brought me to Waroeng Emjay. This was my very first time trying Indonesian cuisine, and I was thoroughly impressed!The vast flavours and the incredible variety of vegetarian options blew me away. We ordered the veg platter, and every single dish on it had a distinctive, unique flavor. It was probably the best combination of vegetarian options I have ever had together in a single meal.The service was incredibly friendly, too. Our young server was so patient and completely accommodated our strange, fussy requests. I only wish we had a place like this back home in Johannesburg! Highly recommended

Emjay is one of the best discoveries we made in Rotterdam. The ambiance may not be that good but looks can be deceiving. The service here is quite decent. Funnily enough, we didn't think we would be intimidated by the spiciness level, which are usually toned down for local taste buds. Oh my, how wrong I was. This is possibly as authentic as it can be. Our favorite is still the ayam bumbu setan which has the sweetness to match the spiciness. Even if spicy food is not your thing, there are options that are less intimating. The way they fry the chicken is just so dang good. It's always juicy and the meat is moist.

I loved it. The place isn't very big and the menu isn't very extensive either, but they serve you quickly and the food is good.

Food⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Ayam penyet is delicious. Crunchy with loads of sambal. But personally I found it tad salty to my liking. Service⭐️⭐️⭐️ I went around 13:30 well past lunch time. There were two tables occupied then. I took an empty table by the window but then was told it’s reserved. So I asked what time is the reservation? She said at two. I understood and went to another empty table by the stairs. Until I finished my meal and left the restaurant, the reserved table remained empty. That experience left a bad taste for me. Athmosphere⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ It is what it is. I did like the old familiar Indonesian songs playing.

Recommended Indonesian restaurant in Rotterdam!! If you like spicy food, I would like to recommend the Ayam Penyet with super spicy sambal. The cendol is great but I love the es kelapa muda more! it's perfect combination with bakso~ Good ambience, great service!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️

It was super tasty and cozy again.

Decent quality (a bit on the salty side), but ruined by terrible service. Dishes were not cleared across multiple tables, at one point the waiter asked if he could put DIRTY dishes onto our table so he could seat customers at another dirty table! Dinner took an hour longer than it should have, we got tired of waiting for our dessert and left. Such a shame.

Way too expensive. The food is very good, though, and it looks cozy inside. Rotterdam is desperate for an affordable, authentic Indonesian warung. This is one of the best in terms of food.

Before coming to the Netherlands, I really wanted to try Indonesian-Dutch cuisine at least once. The connection between the Netherlands and Indonesia is deep and complex — it’s not just that “Indonesian food is common in the Netherlands.” Behind it are layers of colonial history, migration, and how tastes have adapted to each other over time, eventually creating a unique kind of Indonesian food culture in the Dutch context. So during my trip, I randomly picked an Indonesian restaurant to give it a try. I ordered chicken satay (Satay Ayam) with lontong. The satay was surprisingly good — the sauce was sweet and generously covered with a rich peanut sauce. It tasted comforting and flavorful, and the chicken paired really well with it. The lontong was my first time trying it, and the texture was really interesting. It didn’t feel like rice at all — it was more like a soft, dense rice cake, almost like a savory dessert-style texture, which was quite different but enjoyable. Overall, it was a fun and memorable food experience. If you’re visiting the Netherlands and want to try something that reflects the country’s deeper cultural history, Indonesian-Dutch cuisine is definitely worth having at least once.

Amazing food. Friendly staff. Worth revisiting in the future

As native Indonesians, we’re quite picky when it comes to Indonesian food. This Indonesian restaurant in Rotterdam truly surprised us in the best way. The nasi kuning for the Nasi Rames was delicious and our daughter loved the satay. I was very pleasantly surprised by the bakso and its broth, which had real depth of flavor, just like the authentic bakso Bandung I grew up with. It was actually pure coincidence that we ended up here. After a long road trip driving from South Germany, I was searching for any Indonesian place still open around Rotterdam around 8pm and this was the only one open at that time. The owner was super nice and welcoming ☺️ This place turned a tiring travel day into a truly pleasant surprise. We will definitely come back again whenever we’re around the Rotterdam area. What delicious, authentic food! Highly recommended.

We recently had lunch at this restaurant, and it was good. We both had the bami (fried noodles), and my wife had the satay with beans. I had the bami with daging rendang and daging semoor. Unfortunately, my wife's satay was dry and clearly reheated instead of freshly made. My rendang and semoor were delicious, and I shared them with my wife. I liked the beans, but the potatoes weren't very good. We also got some prawn crackers. Next time, we'll both have the semoor and perhaps some other dishes.

Finally, there is a good Indonesian restaurant in Rotterdam again. I have ordered here twice now and the food is simply fantastic! The soto ayam tastes exactly how soto ayam should taste, the rendang and the chicken are deliciously seasoned, the vegetable dishes are all very flavorful too, and the lontong and the bami are simply irresistible. You can really taste that it is made with love and passion. I am going to eat at the restaurant itself soon and will bring friends along. In the meantime, I highly recommend this place.

A very sweet lady behind the counter. The containers were well stocked and the food was delicious. Free eggs, prawn crackers, and pickles. I'm so happy!

We ate here last weekend, 11/10/26. Saturday was busy, but we got a spot right away; they also have an upstairs area. The staff were nice and friendly. Extensive menu. Unfortunately, the bakso was sold out. We ordered the soto ayam and mie ayam, and they were delicious; the flavors were authentic. Conclusion: a fine Indonesian restaurant for a good price.

Excellent meatballs in a cozy, family-friendly setting, and vibrant service with eyes to lose yourself in. If that hadn't happened to the menu before, that would have been a mistake. Highly recommended!

Was looking forward to Indonesian food in the Netherlands. Like many restaurants in this area the food is competent but unmemorable. You order at the counter and they bring it to you. My son and I split a rijstaffel (rice table) which was more than enough for two. Daughter loved the curry chicken. Satay was fine... the peanut sauce mild and a little sweet like the Dutch seem to like. Bathroom was good.

The food is amazing I will say. Like really great quality Indonesian food. I love it. The only thing is prices have increase and portions sizes are smaller than before. NEVRTHELESS it is still VERY WORTH the price because even though they are smaller portions, they will still for sure fill you up and it is more than enough.

We came for dinner on a Thursday night after we booked a table and we were sat upstairs because downstairs were busy. It took a while before they came upstairs to take our order but they did come before we tried to go downstairs to call. We had bakso kikil, mie ayam and tempe mendoan. Although it brougt back flavours I had in Indonesia, the broth/soup of the bakso was lacking depth of flavour, it's nearly there but it needs a tweak. The tempe mendoan is more like tempe tepung (battered rather than half cooked as tempe mendoan should be). We had the cendol that was nice but I felt the portion is a bit too small. The staff were friendly so thats a plus!

Overall good food quality, however there are some remarks that should be addressed: they don't serve tap water and kind of force you to buy the very expensive bottled one (7€ or something similar); the menu is a bit confusing since it's not entirely clear which desserts / teas are included in the 2-people deal; customer service could be easily improved with a smile. On the positive note: rice portions are quite filling and tasty; most meat based dishes are generally good; cendol is an absolute gem here as they've mastered it to perfection delivering a truly authentic delicacy.

We sat upstairs, which actually nicer than downstairs & we came without reservation. The food took very long before served, approximately 40-45 mins. The taste was ok, not great yet. Hopefully gets better. Baso kikil: the meatball is delicious. The soup was bit bland. Needed some mix before I find it ok. Portion: average. Big eater will need more. Baso tahu: similar Bami ayam: good. Portion good for small eater. Tempe mendoan: delicious Tahu telor: ok Overall, nice Indonesian restaurant when you are i. Rotterdam center area. I am not aware of any other Indonesian restaurants in the neighborhood. Maybe next time try their Ayam penyet.

Must have been busy with the film festival That's over now, so definitely go again soon. Never say about things you love that it is 'so okay' then you can join the queue outside that's wasting your time

Today we ordered Baso Tennis, Nasi Kuning, Satay Ayam with Bami Goreng. The taste was perfect, definitely worth repeating!

The Ayam Penyet was delicious and very authentic. Was offered different level of spiciness which was great and ofcourse I had to choose the Indonesian spicy 🥵 Did not regret a single bit. Absolutely loved the dish. Also, the moment you step into the restaurant, it really made you feel like you’re in Indonesia. Will return for other dishes.

Hi, I’m Indonesian, and I have to say that the food here is absolutely delicious and truly authentic Indonesian! I brought my European friends, and they were all so happy enjoying the nasi rames, sate ayam, and everything in between. The ambiance is cozy, and the staff are also friendly! The portion is very large, and it is an Asian taste that is well accepted by Chinese people. I ordered spicy beef and chicken, which were not very spicy, and the stew was very chewy. The taste is not very strong. The rice cubes are a bit unpleasant. Everything else is pretty satisfactory. It feels pretty good for Dutch prices and not too expensive.

I love the food, rather Indonesian authentic. Nice atmosphere as I also loves green color (their concept). The 2nd floor is more spacious. The toilet is also very clean. However the Indonesian lady staff is rather not too friendly.

One of the best Indonesian restaurants in the Netherlands. Very authentic. As an half Indonesian myself, I can say that the food is made with love and tries to recreate the Javanese cuisine as much as possible. And I can happy say that they are succeeding in that.

Gado Gado and Ayam pennet are delicious. The spiciness of the chicken dish can be adjusted and it is quite spicy as it is topped with spicy peppers. Why aren’t there many Indonesian restaurants in Korea?! It's so delicious! 😋

A discovery, right opposite the Doelen. We had dinner here with four colleagues. Delicious flavors, authentic Indonesian. You put together your own plate, vegetarian or not. Tasty rendang, tasty satay, tasty ikan bumbu Bali, good sayur buncis The green rice (nasi hidjau) was a discovery! How wonderful. Very sweet service, nice to have a chat. We liked it so much that we went back the next day to pick up something for the "home front". Ate here again in June 2024. Still excellent quality. Delicious daging belado, good sateh and rendang. Truly a treat! Very nice people.

No compromise is made to the taste.... it's exactly what you will find in Indonesia. This restaurant deserves 5++ star and it's a must when you are looking for masakan Indonesia asli (real Indonesian cooking). The lady owner and family are so kind and friendly! Highly recommended!!

I ordered rames emjay. There should be prawn crackers in the dish. I have not received this. I called and received the response that Kroepoek has run out and that it can be reconstituted for the next order. But who's to say I'll order again next time. I have suggested that from now on if something is missing, it should be compensated with something else, such as Emping. But she didn't want to do this. I think this is very poor service and I will not order from here again.

Worthless. Waiting forty-five minutes for your food. Starter is served at the same time as main course and the main course is not what I ordered. Bad service and no atmosphere at all. A warung to quickly forget!

Pricey for the somewhat small portions. Missing a couple ingredients, so more of a Dutch adaption of Indonesian dishes. Would not recommend the soups, can't verify the rice dishes. Service was slow and some items never arrived.
