Achterwerk in Centrum

Of my few fine dining experiences, Achterwerk rates highly for its personable staff interaction, unique drink pairing selection, and cozy atmosphere. Very happy I got to experience Achterwerk before they closed their doors.

Deze unieke plek biedt heerlijke hapjes en heerlijke - ook niet alcoholische - drankjes. De gangen zijn een genot om te zien en ze smaken ook nog eens heerlijk. De gangen zijn bescheiden, maar na 4 gangen en koffie was ik net voldoende gevuld. Jamer genoeg gaat dit bijzondere restaurant verdwijnen.

Very tasty food. When we eat out we look for good quality vegetarian restaurants. And we have found another one that can create delicious taste sensations from vegetables and nuts. We had a three course dish with an accompanying drinks package. Two of the three dishes came with apple cider, and only the main course came with a super tasty red wine.... I'm not really a fan of apple cider :) But otherwise highly recommended.

An extraordinary experience! The location is unique, at first you are a little surprised when you open the door and find yourself right in the middle of the restaurant. The room is beautiful and doesn't have a lot of frills. The welcome is warm and the process is explained to you in detail. After consulting with the waiter, we decided on the 4-course menu with an alcoholic (wine) and a non-alcoholic drink accompaniment. To put it bluntly, the non-alcoholic drinks are a dream and go 100% with the food. The wine is also great, but the non-alcoholic drinks give you the feeling that they are part of the course. The atmosphere is pleasantly bustling. You can have a relaxed conversation and laugh out loud without being looked at in annoyance. The music is also a bit louder and rounds off the cozy feeling. The food was an absolute dream. I have never eaten so well and hope to return to Achterwerk soon. Thank you for this great evening.

What a great restaurant! Every course is surprisingly delicious. I had the non-alcoholic drinks package and that was always a taste sensation. The cook was constantly preparing the plates with a cheerful smile on his face, which says enough: a heart for good food 😀. Service was attentive and super nice. I enjoyed it!

Best restaurant in Groningen. A true delight and five star experience.

We are big fans of eating out well, but as vegetarians, even 'well-known' top restaurants can sometimes be a bit boring or predictable in their choice of dishes or ingredients. This certainly did not apply to Achterwerk, we had the 5-course menu with an aperitif, and received beautiful surprising combinations in which vegetables really played a starring role. The non-alcoholic drink package was also clearly put together with care and taste. We were very positively surprised!

We both had the 5 course seasonal surprise menu. The food was delicious and the flavor combinations unique. One of us had the matching non-alcoholic drinks, the other the matching wines. The non-alcoholic option in particular was surprising and very tasty. The wines also paired well. The service was very passionate and gave nice explanations about the food and drink combinations. We will definitely go back next season!

Enjoyed a delicious four-course dinner. Every course was a vegan surprise with a delicious matching wine. Every dish is beautifully crafted without fuss. Clearly prepared with passion and enthusiastically explained by the excellent service.

The food is good. Regarding drinks, suggestions by staff were not matching my taste even I explained what I like. But they were very friendly.

Once again we had a super fun and tasteful evening at Achterwerk! 5 course dinner with matching wines and everything was really very refined. Add to that Anna's top service and you have a wonderful evening!

Very impressed with the combination of dishes, wine and service. The 4-course surprise menu was really a treat. Everything was neatly explained, from the food and the matching wines. Every dish and matching wine had something unique. It's a shame that Groningen is just too far away for us, otherwise you would find me here more often.

The food was really delicious and the service very friendly. I would have liked the room to be a little brighter so that you could see the dishes, which look beautiful, a little better. Furthermore, it is a nice quiet space to eat.

Fantastic menu and service, highly recommended

Nice atmosphere, not too chic, but still appropriate for a quality restaurant. We had 4 courses with matching wines and every course, as well as amuses, were pure pleasure. It was truly unbelievable what delicious flavors these vegan meals had and the wines were also fabulous. I normally eat meat in restaurants, but I didn't miss it for a moment here. The price was a bit higher than I am usually used to, but the rich taste experience was definitely worth it. It was a great evening, thank you!

I've eaten there several times and it's usually disappointing, but not at Achterwerk! Food and service are fantastic. I prefer to take non-vegans with me so that they can experience what plant-based food can also be like. We recommend the non-alcoholic drinks package: delicious homemade juices that really complement the food.

What a fantastic experience it was at Achterwerk restaurant! Together with my partner we decided to reserve a table for last Saturday evening. After seeing the high ratings on Google Maps, our expectations were high, and we were not disappointed. On arrival we were kindly received and given a warm welcome. The concept of the 5-course menu with matching drinks package was clearly explained to us, and we enthusiastically opted for the alcoholic package. What followed was a true culinary journey, with each dish appearing on our plate like a work of art. The flavors were perfectly matched, and the accompanying drinks completed the experience. The staff were exceptionally committed and enthusiastic, and made us feel welcome from start to finish. Although some dishes were a little more pronounced than others, we can confidently say that the overall experience is absolutely recommendable. We enjoyed the warm and knowledgeable service, and felt truly spoiled. After this wonderful experience, one thing is certain: we will definitely come back to Achterwerk. It was an evening you will not soon forget, and we are already looking forward to the next time we can enjoy all the goodies this restaurant has to offer.

I ate here twice, the first time was surprising, but not spectacular. Nice that everything is vegan. But the 2nd time it was just disappointing. Main course was raw risotto which was presented as risotto with a bite?! And then also an Italian chef 😂 For 6 courses, 1x half glasses of wine arrangement, 2 drinks and coffee, the price was €205 For this money you can eat much better in many places in Groningen.

What a party night! Delicious 5 course dinner with very enthusiastic service. We already paid 50 euros when booking, but we completely understand that. Such sophisticated and very tasty dishes. The restaurant is a bit hidden but is highly recommended! Thank you for the pleasant and tasteful evening.

As lovers of delicious and lovingly prepared food, we have noticed for some time that vegan cuisine excels in innovation for innovative creativity with well-known and unusual ingredients. "Achterwerk" went one step further last Saturday by choosing to create something unique by hand, in addition to the dishes, and also in the preparation of the non-alcoholic drinks. From an orange juice with anise that came unreally close to a pastiche to the non-alcoholic vermouth, everything was excellently created. And yes, my wine pairing was also sublime. With a starring role for the cider with saffron. The combinations with the 6 courses were each expertly introduced by the somelier. Who has clearly found his passion. The 2 waitresses made the atmosphere complete. Attentive, interested and disarming. It's a party every time they appear at the table full of enthusiasm with another culinary surprise. And finally there was that "jaw dropping" moment! People worked hard in the open kitchen. Without stress or tension. It was such a harmonious spectacle. Of course you then thank these culinary magicians for leaving. To then hear that the chef is "only" 18 years old.... It reminded me of those famous words from Whitney Houston: "I believe the children are our future. Teach them well and let them lead the way.." "Achterwerk" shows that love for your profession and your customer is truly "the greatest love of all".

The Achterwerk offers 4,5 or 6 course meals with pairings of non-alcoholic or alcoholic drinks. I have chosen for a pairing of half-glass alcoholic drinks while my partner chose non-alcoholic ones both with a 6 course meal. I must say that besides the beverage choices there is a lack of cohesion in the dishes presented to the table, starting with the amouse bouche. We were served beetroot tacos and a small pumpkins soup with caramelised onions and coffee. While the tacos were quite good, I could only taste coffee in my soup. My partners soup had a different taste. The first course was fennel, orange and sambucca. An interesting mix of flavours but slightly on the sweet side of things. The second is a cauliflower dish; as a plate it works, but the drink is really needed to balance out some acidity of it. The Kiwi and mustard was for me the worst dish of the evening, surprisingly the two dishes at the table had different tastes, one was sweet while the other rather sour. Fourth dish is likely my favourite, eventhough it may be a bit salty to some palets. The aubergine with cappers and black olives came together very well in an interesting mix of textures and flavours. The main dish star is the sauce. Smooth and tasty, but the gnocchi was heavy and doughy. Yet overall, quite pleasant. The dessert has some interesting flavours and is a good surprise. The brioche doesn't add much value to the dish but the richness of the 5 spice ice cream and yuzu make up for it. After all, I would say as an experience it is worth it if you are on an adventurous mood. As for fine dining, one would expect that the dishes on the same table taste the same.

Achterwerk offers vegan fine dining and only works with surprise menus (4, 5 or 6 courses). A beautiful location (room in a former Gymnasium) and the nicest staff you could wish for: dedicated, friendly, warm. Exceptionally good by Dutch standards. We opted for the five-course menu in the first week of January 2024: 4 starters, a main dish and a desert. The first three starters were unprecedentedly special and original, with a surprising, delicious taste. Indescribably good. I was less enthusiastic about the Kiwi Mustard and the Gnocchi, Topinambur, Pistachio and the desert. The slow-cooked kiwi asks for more. The Gnocchi was too hard and not crispy. The dessert was a blur, everything was mixed together and it was too sweet. My partner's looked neater and tasted good(!). Dinner at Achterwerk is a pleasant experience, but not enough to pass as dinner. You will need to have eaten well beforehand or eat something afterwards. The time between courses is too long (sometimes up to 30 minutes). The promotion of the drinks package also resembles wine dining rather than fine dining. Why promote alcohol so much in a vegan restaurant? Nevertheless, I do recommend this restaurant: it is a unique experience and the changing of the menu every month certainly makes you curious.

Wow! My experience at 'Achterwerk', the vegan restaurant, was absolutely delicious. The food was infused with love and attention, with flavors that were truly innovative and challenging. Each dish was carefully thought out and prepared with clear dedication. The ambiance was pleasant and the service was exceptional. The staff took the time to explain each dish and passionately advised on drink pairings. Overall an excellent vegan restaurant. If they continue to maintain this standard, they definitely deserve a Michelin star!

Via Google Maps we came to Achterwerk due to the high review score. Made a reservation for Saturday evening via the clear website. We received a friendly welcome and the concept was explained. A 4-, 5- or 6-course menu with accompanying alcohol or non-alcohol package. We opted for the four-course menu with aperitif. Both the dishes and accompanying drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) are extremely well matched. All in all a culinary adventure! Beautiful layered dishes with very committed and enthusiastic staff who continuously guide you throughout the evening. We highly recommend this restaurant!

Surprising and good food. Not every course was consistently good, but overall all recommended. Friendly and knowledgeable service. Warm welcome. Non-alcoholic drinks package was a real addition on some courses, less so on others, but it does add something for guests who cannot consume alcohol.

Het eten was echt fantastisch! Prachtige smaakcombinaties met heerlijke bijzondere zelfgemaakte drankjes bij de gerechten. De bediening was heel vriendelijk en de locatie was passend bij het eten en de algehele sfeer… net even anders op een leuke manier.

Wat een fantastische ervaring was dit. Eerste keer veganistisch eten maar zeker niet de laatste keer. Leuke kleine zaak en service was top. Ze maken ook een hele goede Negroni als je daarvan houdt.

Eigenlijk had ik niet zulke geweldige verwachtingen maar het overtrof al mijn verwachtingen. Eten zeer gevarieerd en lekker, wijnen erg goede keus, kortom een restaurant om je door de zeer vriendelijke bediening te laten verrassen.

Heerlijke wijnarrangement reis van Spanje, Frankrijk, Roemenië naar Oostenrijk. We kozen voor 5 gangen verrassingsmenu en de gerechten werden vanuit open keuken geserveerd met een uitgebreide toelichting welke informatief maar bovenal ook erg onderhoudend is. Zeer smaakvol en creatief en ook mooi geserveerd. Heerlijke smaak explosie en ook fantastisch voor gasten die sceptisch tegen veganistisch eten staan. Wij hebben ons uitermate welkom gevoeld en enorm genoten van het heerlijke eten en drinken. Aardig, hartelijk en vriendelijk personeel.en bediening. Beslist de moeite waard! Setting is leuk zeker als club oost open gaat en wij uit restaurant komen en club en gang staat vol met uitgaanspubliek, maar je hier geheel niets van merkt. Kleine opmerking: is niet gevraagd of wij allergieën hebben, maar misschien had je dit ook vooraf kenbaar moeten maken bij reservering. Super leuke avond gehad van ruim 3 uur.

Lekker vegetarisch eten maar ik had net iets meer fine dining verwacht. Zalige goed gekozen wijnen. Uitstekende bediening. Leuke ambiance maar wel wat donker.

After having eaten here three times here I feel like I am ready to give a true review. The location absolutely suits it’s purpose and, whilst not having any windows, transmits a sense of translucency. The first two times were truly amazing with an incredible menu really telling an honest narrative. The third time however, was rather disappointing. The menu lacked both coherence and fine tuning. Three out of six courses were way too acidic whilst they could have been a beautiful arrangement. We were with three people and none of us really enjoyed it. The first two times we honestly felt like being served edible art whilst this was truly not the case for the third time. Waiters were generally friendly and tried to transmit the intended message of the chef. Maybe we just were unlucky on our third time.

Best food you’ll ever have. The combinations, the drink pairings, the service and the food? All supreme. Vegan is not even just an option here but a „of course, no problem“. Everything is very friendly, down to earth while still super professional. We’ve been here twice but will come many more times whenever the occasion is right.

We had a wonderful evening! The food is simply outstanding! The chefs come up with surprising but always delicious (vegan) courses, which they can pare with interesting nature wines (or alcohol free mocktails). Denis, our waiter, did an amazing job! He knew a lot about the foods and wines and is a really kind and fun guy! The ambience is really "chill" which I think is a rare but excellent combination with the fine dining experience. We'll be back for sure!

Wat een smaak explosie al deze mooie producten. Smaken die je in een gebruikelijk restaurant van lappen of gemalen vlees nóóit zult proeven. Hoeft ook niet maar dit is een ware maar beleving. Aanrader voor iedereen met smaak 😁

One of the best gastronomic experiences I have ever had, and I have had a few. This vegan restaurant offers dishes created with amazing imagination using local fresh products of the season. The wine pairing was also excellent. The service was above and beyond, a young dynamic team that really love their job! I highly recommend!

Heerlijke smaken en ideeen maar je komt ranmelend van de honger en verlangend naar een stukje vlees of vis thuis. De wijn pairing is fantastisch maar je bent straal bezopen als je thuiskomt want je krijgt vier kruimels per gang te eten.

I am open to a lot of food styles. So why not a completely vegan restaurant? The result was surprisingly good. Achterwerk is a great place to discover complete animal-free meal. The staff was very good. Rarely seen such a calm (and funny) wine waiter. This was perfect for a night out with friends.

Het is inderdaad wat moeilijk te vinden maar het eten is heerlijk. Ook voor niet vega’s zoals wij. We hebben een 5 gangen diner genomen en elk gerecht was heerlijk en mooi opgediend. Het personeel is vriendelijk en aardig.
