Bakkerij Mater in Nieuwe Pijp

I believe keeping opening hours updated on Google Maps shouldn’t be too difficult. On December 27, 2025, I traveled by car from quite far away to place a takeaway order, only to find the bakery closed, which was disappointing. Hopefully this can be improved to avoid similar situations in the future.

Bread is ok , but I was charged extra when asked to slice it. Ridiculous.

Small artisanal bakery in the De Pijp area, with limited seating but a super authentic atmosphere, with an open-plan workshop that makes you hungry just by looking. Really excellent coffee... The bread is top-notch (crust and aroma), and the desserts are well-made. A special mention: the "pain au chocolat" is spectacular, especially the one with almonds... buttery, flaky, and delicious... Highly recommended! Everything was excellent... thank you.

Great quality and flavor, but the overall experience was severely undercut by poor service and high prices for noticeably small portions. I refuse to return to any establishment where the staff is rude and they clearly compromise product size just to increase profit. Those actions speak volumes about the business's values.

I came here every week to pick up my bread or have a coffee. Last Wednesday, for example, I also had coffee with a friend. I also ordered whole-wheat bread (7 euros), but because it was still too warm, I was going to take it with me after my coffee was finished. I forgot, and since I was in a hurry, I asked my girlfriend to come by later to explain and pick up my bread. She did, but was treated rudely by what I believe was the owner. This man spoke rudely in a crowded restaurant and made my girlfriend feel like a jerk. I didn't even mind their point about not being able to give me the bread. But the way they did it was truly appalling. I have to admit, their croissants and bread are fine. Otherwise, there's not much choice. It's incredibly expensive, though. But this man is overly arrogant and completely misses the mark with his tone towards (former) customers. I'm no longer aware that such people are in charge.

The cinnamon roll had a unique baklava-like texture. I’d never seen that before, and I absolutely loved it!

We randomly decided to walk in while strolling through De Pijp. Decided to try a cheese croissant for takeaway, and I’m so glad we did! The pastry was amazing, and I’m kicking myself for not getting more. Definitely a new favourite in Amsterdam!

Best cinnamon roll ever but worst service ever. So slow, which could fit the vibe of the place (neighborhood bakery, fermentation etc, opens late) but the so inefficient that it becomes annoying. But again: amazing products

OK, I went to purchase one croissant but after sampling a bite I realized things had changed. I came out with seven awesome purchases: a loaf of wonderful, moist beautifully textured rye bread, an almond croissant, a cinnamon bun, a raisin bun, a plain croissant and a gorgeous dessert pastry. I have sampled each one and each one is spectacular. This place is into serious perfection. Enjoy!

Decent sourdough bread, except for the white one which deserves 1 star. The pastries are extremely tiny and do not look artisanal, considering the large prices (above average for the area and Amsterdam overall).

I'm not kidding the absolute best cinnamon bun and croissants I have ever had in my life. So flaky and buttery and delicious!! I first had a cinnamon bun and had to go back to get another one plus a croissant - best decision!

I have fallen in love with their flakey and buttery cinnamon buns! Had to try a simple butter crossaint and WOW, this one is just as delicious and one of the best I have ever tasted. The bakery itself is super cute and gives off a very relaxed and neighbourhood friendly kinda vibe.

It's a completely different level of bakery! Very cool that everything is made with sourdough. The perfect taste of baking. Now only here I want to eat a cinnamon roll and pan chocolat.

The bread is decent (if still standard Amsterdam prices for sourdough, ie expensive). The pastries are baffling. The quality is good, but they have gotten comically tiny over time. The danish has space remaining for one small piece of fruit. The croissants are the length of a finger. They all still cost 3-5 euros. Only the cheese stick would take more than two bites to eat, and that's very much a length issue rather than a heft issue. The paper bag policy is absolutely unique, kind of like they are morally judging you for ordering more than one thing, which is a) very funny given the size of most things they sell and b) an interesting attitude for a bakery business to hold. If you aren't willing or able to pack multiple products together into the one container, maybe don't snidely charge people for the additional bag(s). Also, if your paper bag supplier is charging you so much that your business will fail if you don't charge 20c for each, then you need a new bag guy. Or probably more accurately - if you feel the need to make a 1000% profit on your paper bags, then forgive me for being extra unsympathetic when you're also trying to convince me that a few square centimetres of pastry is worth 4 euros. 3 stars because those brief, fleeting bites are quite good, and because I guess you need to reward innovation for its own sake in today's fast paced business environment.

Delicious sourdough—definitely the best in the area and worth the price. Service could be warmer; staff aren’t the most welcoming, which takes away a bit from the overall experience.

I don't know the location yet, but the bread I ate (sourdough) was artisanally delicious, I tried it when they were on Javaplein with their nostalgic old bread cart, great...

One of the best bakeries in Amsterdam. My favorite is their Whole wheat sourdough bread. Stays edible for several days. It is a bit more expensive than average, but this bread is so good that it doesn't need any toppings…

What a fantastic artisan bakery! The croissants are really AMAZING!!! The spelt bread is also delicious! Only downside is that they are not open every day!

I had a croissant and a cinnamon bun, and they were both excellent I really enjoyed them. This is a lovely little bakery and café. However, I feel the staff could be a bit more polite and welcoming. The woman who took my order and made my coffee was quite rude, unfortunately. Also, the coffee cup I received was extremely dirty, and so was the saucer it looked used. I couldn’t drink from it. When I asked if it could be changed, she simply poured the same coffee into a different cup, which felt like a terrible joke. It was really disappointing. She should have made a fresh cup of coffee instead. No matter how good the food is, I don’t think I’ll be coming back after this experience.

Didn’t had much to offer from the glass shelve. Bought 2 regular croissants, those were not fully baked on the inside. The raison sandwiches were nice. Though overal it was a bit unorganised. I like the bakery was a bit messy but didn’t feel direct customers are their primary focus.

Delicious whole wheat bread, it is already tasty without toppings. It is very airy so not a heavy bread.

The place is really small so better takeaway. The cinnamon bun was really good, very moist and heavy, not like usual cinnamon buns you know! It’s 3.95 per piece though, so not really cheap taking into account its size😅 but what I didn’t like most was a guy at the counter. Very unfriendly and when I asked him about their products he answered like I should have known it and I felt like he wanted me gone as fast as possible, not nice vibes.

Really like how convenient the location is. I usually grab a croissant and pain au chocolat – classic options, but they make them feel extra special with different chocolate choices. You should definitely try it when you're around Albert Cuyp

My go-to spot for weekly bread! I haven’t tried the pastries yet, but I always come here for bread. The price-to-quality ratio is excellent compared to other bakeries. The Whole Wheat Sourdough Bread and Sourdough Brioche are my favorites!

(Delicious) bread and savory snacks. The selection is not very large, but it is very tasty! Of course, honest bread has its price. Portions are not very big, but totally worth it!

Their products are good but the woman who served me was rude and unwelcoming. Maybe she thought I was a tourist, but I do live in Amsterdam so that was a chance to get a new customer that got lost.

Pastries and bread are very nice, as is the coffee but the service and etiquette needs to be worked on. Been here twice with both times having to wait as staff in the back baking look at the growing queue. Sure, maybe you aren’t a barista but you can surely help bag pastries and ring up customers. This time the barista made us wait while she made coffees for the staff before acknowledging us or taking our order. Customer service needs help here.

amazing place, the feeling of home. this bakery brings you light, fluffiness and exquisite taste as well in their delicious heart-warmly baked products (most playful cinnamon bum in town, FUN) as in their transparent and careful service and work environment, one for all, all for one. cosiness around a big table inside to enjoy your goodies surrounded by some warm and crispy tunes. Outside there is a comfy bench to enjoy your treats in the sun between some of Amsterdam oldest plantains 🌳🌱 don’t hesitate to strike up a conversation with the bakery’s head honcho, friendly baker type, you’ll recognise him. be prepared to come back again and again, and again. Best croissant I’ve had, ever. The flaky layers and buttery taste is perfection. Absolutely incredible. I have yet to try their other offerings but certainly will.

If I could give this place 6 stars I would. Out of 10, I’ve give them 15. Best bakery + coffee experience of my life. The cinnamon buns are life changing, of course (think: the love child of a Kouign-amann, croissant, and cinnamon bun thruple!) but so was their sandwich (get it on baguette) with the most amazing house made chutney (also kind of changes the way I see chutneys now) and the pear tart. The friedhats coffee was delicious and the overall vibe (alongside a very cute cat at the table) was exceptional. The woman helping us was also super sweet, friendly and introduced me to some amazing music (Caroline). This trip is worth every step it takes you to arrive! And get an extra bun to go…

Really great sourdough bread, the kind girl that served us today was very friendly and efficient!

We love the bread and butter pudding, and some of the other sweets here but the quality of the bread has been uneven. The round loaf can be very salty at times, and last time we got the rectangular spelt the crust was covered in a film of strong-smelling grease (perhaps oil that was used to grease the tin?). It was quite irritating to the throat so we had to cut off the crust and discard it. The coffee is really good but the table is often taken by the staff so this doesn't feel like a cafe, more like a canteen for the staff. I don't think we'll be going back also because the prices do not correspond with quality. Consistency matters.

Came here for the first time. The bread was good, however the pain au chocolate on the picture was 3€. Baking doesn’t always go as planned, but selling it for that price is a disgrace.

Sourdough croissants are life changing. I've never had anything like it and I've had dozens since the first because I can't get enough. They also bake my favorite sourdough loaves in all of Amsterdam and serve delicious local Friedhats coffee!

Pastries are definitely greasier than usual but still pretty edible, service has been satisfactory on both occasions. The Pain Au Chocolat is quite tiny compared to the usual size that you get, but still pricey. Also find it weird that they serve pastries with their bare hands to the customers without the use of tongs. Not the most appealing in my opinion.

The bakery is nice and their bread is tasty, but nothing to be crazy about considering all the bakeries that are around Amsterdam. But what makes it worst is the staff, they are rude and forget you’re a customer and they just treat you like if you were asking a favor when buying their bread.

Fantastic place. With great coffee and bread. We enjoyed a delicious meal with the group (9 people). The ambiance was nice. What lovely people.

Very small bakery on the main road. A limited number of seats are available. The design was like an open kitchen so you could see the staff making the pastries and bread whilst queueing, which was quite interesting. We went on saturday around midday and had to queue for about 5-10 minutes. Ordered a brioche loaf and some cinnamon buns. > brioche loaf: You can tell it's very buttery as the paper bags were starting to soak in oil. I wasn't a massive fan of the brioche as I normally prefer my bread soft. This was not really soft, but.. streaky(?) and sourdough like. If you normally like sourdough, then you might like this. > cinnamon buns: similar to the brioche loaf, the paper bag was starting to soak up in oil, and the bun had a very bread like texture to it. It's not the soft type but comes with a slight chewyness. I preferred heating it up in the microwave, and it was a lot nicer. Chewy texture, but you could taste the butter. It's not my favourite but still nice.

Very nice family business where very tasty products are made with a lot of attention and beautiful ingredients. That indeed costs more than at the supermarket.

I felt nostalgic today after moving away from Amsterdam, and my mind went straight to bakkerij mater. We used to go here every week and order a smorgasbord of things. Everything is incredible. I’m gluten intolerant and it never affected me because the quality of the wheat and the care is next level. Go there and buy one of everything. One of my favourite places in the world to spend an hour in blissful peace. Also, it’s family run, which is gorgeous to have front row seats to this beautiful intergenerational act of baking for the community 💚

4.25 stars, great flaky sourdough croissant but the oil got a bit too heavy for my liking. Will try the cinnamon bun next time :) nice sidewalk chairs to sit on too!

Came there with a friend. The pastries were exceptional as usual and the baking team was jolly, spreading good vibes to the dough, as they always do :) On the other hand, the barista treated us as if we were builders in her house on a Saturday morning. She didn't make any effort to hide how unpleased she was from our presence. At 16:40 she told us they were closing, or actually closed for 10 minutes already and asked us to leave. I said it says on Google maps the closing time is at 17 and she said -yeah well ok we changed it. We thanked her and left (important to mention we didn't engage with her negativity) It was a moment in our day, so we didn't take it personally, but if the bakery is reading this, maybe check on your personnel. Unhappy people might need extra attention 🩷

The older man largely ignored the customers. He put his finger in the glaze from a passing donut tray, licked his finger and then took my croissants. Not very hygienic, that's for sure.

For the customer : be careful when you pay as the price you will pay can be different from the one you see. For them: please change the price then, cause it is not a pleasant experience to have to say that the price is wrong :) and customer shouldn't have to verify that Brownie super hard, dry but okay. Also the spoon were not clean.. maybe they were dirty pot? But why were there on the table?

My god the baguettes! 🥹 other breads are fantastic too. I don’t know what they do to their breads but you can really tell the difference to other bakeries

Their croissants and breads are out of this world. Never had any better in Paris as well, best in Amsterdam 🥐 and cinnamon rolls are so thin layered and buttery, unlike all rest of the mealy Scandinavian ones in every corner.

Very cute bakery, I walk in front every morning but never got in until today. I think it is overpriced and pastries are actually not that good. They are way too oily. I’m french and ive never eaten such an oily croissant.

Good bakery, perhaps the best in Amsterdam and for miles around. The baguette is the best I have tasted in my life. Cinnamon rolls are delicious - very good croissants, fantastic bread and other goodies. Does it cost anything? Yes. Is it expensive? No.

I’ve been looking forward to trying this place as I eat a lot of croissants and pastries in Amsterdam and wherever I travel. The nut bread loaf here had a really nice taste and texture, but sadly I was let down by their croissants and cinnamon rolls. I don’t know If I just got a bad batch because both the croissant and cinnamon roll were super buttery and dense. There were very few layers in the croissant as it was just collapsed and full of grease. Possibly even undercooked? But when I read other reviews about the croissants being way too buttery, maybe this is just their style, unfortunately. I really wanted to like this place but will stick with my usual favorite bakeries.

Very bad service, rude to customers. Forget half of our order and after complaining twice we get an indignant response that it is coming. In the meantime, well-known customers walk away with coffee who arrived much later than us. We are still waiting for our coffee. What a joke. At least say sorry if you do something wrong. Bread was ok but certainly not worth 4.7 for this place.

The best cinnamon rolls I had in my life! Without exaggeration, and I eat a lot of cinnamon rolls everywhere. Warm, flaky, not too sweet, full of flavor. Out of this world. And what’s even better, the coffee was great too. Sometimes you find a bakery that has good pastry, but average coffee- not here. I was so pleasantly surprised. Veeery good cheese stick too, what a nice little discovery!
