Bakkerij Voordijk in Donkersloot

I have tried the Bara, Roti, and Surinamese rolls from this bakery. The products are fresh daily, which is a plus. During a clearance sale, they are also available from the freezer. This bakery does work traditionally at night. I only think, as constructive criticism, that the recipe could use some improvement. A Surinamese roll is supposed to be airy and not dry. The rolls from this bakery are tasty, but only if you toast them and then add toppings. Not suitable to eat as is; then it is dry and crumbly. A real Surinamese roll does not need to go on the toaster first and is not dry but airy on the inside. That is why I don't consider them real Surinamese rolls, but those are hardly to be found anywhere in the Netherlands. Coincidentally, there is a small bakery in Ridderkerk called Bakker Vos, and they manage to make real Surinamese rolls—airy, etc., just like in Suriname—which you don't need to toast. I find the roti from this bakery acceptable, but not very special; it dries out quickly in the freezer. The Baras are okay, but nothing special. They lack the circle in the middle, which is exactly what provides the traditional touch for the filling. Very greasy and quite neutral in taste. Perhaps the rapid drying out in the freezer is due to the included packaging. With other major players like Easy Snacks, I see that the packaging is thicker and sealed. Perhaps this is the culprit, and products in different packaging might not dry out in the freezer. The products from this bakery aren't particularly bad, but I have eaten better. Anyone who has ever eaten a bara, roti, or sandwich in Suriname can attest to this. I do think this bakery could be capable of matching the quality found in Suriname, but the recipes would need to be overhauled. On the other hand, most people in the Netherlands know nothing other than the Dutchified Bara, Roti, and Surinamese sandwiches, so I understand if this bakery just leaves it as tasty as it is. Unfortunately, in this day and age, authentic dishes are being commercially adapted for the market. It's a shame, because the real, original taste prevails. The website could use an update, and perhaps a more modern ordering system via the site instead of the app or fax, so to speak. I have a soft spot for these hardworking bakers and certainly do not want to speak ill of them.

A very nice little bakery with delicious bread and pastries

Always fresh, always friendly. The bread is high quality and stays fresh longer than supermarket bread. It looks so delicious, and the price is great too. There's often something you can grab a few extra of. Kudos to the staff. Also for the pastries and cakes!

Had a fun workshop with my daughter. Made delicious filled cookies and chocolate fudge. We were able to burn a nice text or picture onto a breadboard. It was a lovely morning. Highly recommended. Thanks, Wendelien.
