Café de Pels is a second living room. The staff is incredibly friendly and the prices are very reasonable by Amsterdam standards. Everyone knows each other and looks out for one another. Special praise goes to bartender Sita!

Has recently gone downhill tremendously. Used to be a very friendly bartender, but he passed away. Now I'm even more or less kicked out because the terrace is too small. Payed 38 euros with my girlfriend, vowing never to come back. April 2026 Visited again by mistake and still nothing has improved.

Visited Café De Pels on a Sunday like a local. Had a cappuccino here and ate a piece of gingerbread at the bar. The café has a warm and homey atmosphere, right in the middle of a busy and touristy street. Precisely because of this, it feels like a nice place to unwind for a moment. It is a classic brown café, but also a cozy place to eat. Moreover, the details and appearance have been well thought out. For instance, there is text on the chocolate served with the coffee, and the logo is subtly repeated on the tableware. That gives the whole place just that little extra charm. The breakfast also looked good, and it is a nice place to have a drink at the bar or to have a drink later in the day.

Had a cappuccino there. Sadly, the coffee was pretty average, but the service was warm and friendly.

The interior is nice. Finding a seat can be a bit difficult. Try their various beers. I recommend trying the "biter ball" with your beer. We liked it.

If you want to enjoy the real Amsterdam, this is one of the cafes to really enjoy yourself.

Rude staff. Plenty of reviews saying people reading doing laptop work taking calls. I was asked to put my phone away while working after spending 20 euro on incredibly average coffee.

A very nice cafe, we had a simple breakfast, the Dutch one for me. The food arrived quickly and was good. The best thing for me was the bartender; you could tell he cared about his customers. He came over several times to ask if everything was okay and even took the initiative to offer a glass of water to someone who hadn't ordered a drink without us asking. Highly recommended.

We ordered bitterballen, which were delicious—so good that we were even recommended to try more. Definitely worth a stop if you’re in the area.

A very nice place, the coffee and tea are delicious, the breakfast is recommended, and you can even read the newspaper. It's a bit cramped around the waist, but along with the guests and the pictures and posters on the walls, I think that's why the atmosphere there is so cozy.

Stopped in here for coffee and breakfast one morning while out for a walk. The food and coffee was delicious!

Nice outdoor and indoor seating right by the canal. The pulled chicken fries tasted okay. It had a lot of cheese on it. The bitterballen did not have enough meat filling in it. The staff were friendly but not as attentive.

The first time I’ve tried Bitterballen, and definitely not my last. The Bitterballen reminded me of croquettes, but a Dutch version. Very tasty. Met a friendly Dutch local who I had a nice talk with. Will visit here again

Please don't change anything! Very nice Amsterdam café with a very good small menu. Here you can still get in touch with the so-called locals for a meaningful conversation. I love coming there and the beef sausage sandwich is my favorite!

The waitress(or I don’t know if she was the owner) was very rude. I was speaking on the phone and she came to ask me talk outside, even though the other customers were talking and laughing very loudly. The only problem was I was talking in another language, you could see the discrimination in her face. Will never come back here.

It was pouring, it was very cold and we found this place by chance. A perfect bar to have a drink, good atmosphere, prices within Amsterdam standards.

The young boy working there charged me way too much! This hasn’t happen with other workers there. He was super unfriendly and disrespectful on top.

I had a very disappointing experience that really spoiled my day. I came in for brunch and to do some work on my laptop. However, when I took out my laptop, the waitress informed me that working on it at the table was not allowed. She asked me to move to another table, emphasizing that there are specific rules in place because it's a café, not a workspace, and I only had an hour. The tone used made me feel unwelcome, as if I was disrupting their upscale establishment. Additionally, there were no signs or information at the entrance or on the tables informing customers that laptops are not allowed, which added to the surprise and disappointment of being asked to move. Furthermore, the quality of the breakfast was below par. For 14 euros, I received a black coffee, a glass of juice, one boiled egg, and a cheap baguette with Gouda cheese. I didn't feel like staying any longer, as my appetite was ruined and the atmosphere was not welcoming. Overall, it wasn't a hospitable experience, and the food was very basic.

Hidden gem in Amsterdam that I would highly recommend. The place is small but we went an early Friday afternoon and had no issues getting a spot at the bar. The service was great and quick. Would absolutely recommend the bitterballen, so good! The veal was my favorite but I also enjoyed the cheese. It’s also very affordable with four beers and two orders of croquettes being under 40€

Homemade Hummus was good with the warm bread. We were sitting on the sidewalk. If you like to be "in the action" it is for you! Service was friendly. I even had a small training in Dutch from the barman.

My family frequented Cafe De Pels several times during our recent travels in Amsterdam and it was one of our favorite places in the city. It's such a warm, welcoming, classic atmosphere. Delicious cheese sandwiches, good coffee, efficient staff. We would have lingered there most of the day if tourist sights weren't calling....

Went in for a beer with a friend not knowing the absolute horrendous group of people that were about to walk in. Totally pissed, extremely loud and packing their own cans of beer, I guess that's alright? Unfortunately the bar tender just wasn't bothered by the fact that people were leaving the bar because of this group. The guy behind bar also made a big stinker just because we wanted to spilt the bill in half... yeah kind of confusing can't slipt the bill but it's ok to bring your own beer. Wow.

Lovely little place, very cool and lovely atmosphere. We had beers and “snacks” that were a great lunch. The beer was cold and delicious and the snacks were amazing. You’re right in the centre but it feels really local and the snacks are traditional Dutch.

I am not sure if the Dutch word strict is the same word as rude? This is normally one of my favourite places I like to go to when I need a moment to myself which rarely happens. I wanted to write while waiting for my breakfast. I pulled out my laptop and I was immediately told I had to sit at the back or at the bar and I could only stay an hour. Huh?! Am I regular? No. I was the only person there. My Brussels breakfast was dripping with water inside and out of my egg. It was not pleasant. Coffee also gross. Economist and New Yorker were no where to be found. So sad. It used to be a nice atmosphere. Now it is just for perhaps tourists?

Authentic place. Unfortunately they didn't have Sandwiches in the afternoon when we wanted to eat something small but the stuff was friendly and we ordered something else from the Snacks Menu. All in all worth a visit, but maybe better in th morning or evening for drinks.

We spent the morning walking around the 9 Streets (De 9 Straatjes) of Amsterdam Friday morning. When it was time for some lunch we found this lovely little place "Cafe De Pels". We enjoyed a couple of beers, My wife had a cheese sandwich om a large croissant. I had their raw beef sausage sandwich with mustard and pickled onions. It was delicious, We were able to sit outside and enjoy the view of people walking,

Fantastic place very traditional

I love this bar usually as it feels very homey and I like its old and rustic vibe. However, there’s one bartender who’s very rude and passive aggressive. I was there last Sunday just to have a glass of red wine by myself. I sat down and recorded a voice message on my phone and the bar keeper immediately came up to me and told me it’s not allowed to have phone calls as their policy prohibits phone calls. I’m now really curious if this is really part of your policy or if he was just bored and looked for a reason to complain. It’s not the first time the bar keeper acts this rude. I would appreciate it if you can show me your policy. Sorry for the 3 stars, if it wasn’t about that bar keeper your bar deserves a 5 star rating!

Good place to read and catch up on news and with friends. They have great snacks with good sourdough bread. And also many subscriptions to good newspapers and magazines.

this place was fine. maybe if you’re a local you’ll have a better experience than us , but we waited an hour for very average food. the place was not packed at all so it’s confusing why they took this long. she said the bread would cook for seven minutes but one hour later still nothing. ridiculous and also expensive
