Ordered medium rare... came medium done.

They have a special setup for tables, sitting on couches with the food on your lap. The food is so good that it doesn t really matter where they put it. Fabuloso tournedos. Great wine selection, good wine…you pay for it of course.

Terrible service. First of all, they force you to buy a drink which they don't even have a soft drink menu (only a wine menu). Secondly， there's a 3 Euro service fee with very racial discrimination service. Since I'm Asian, the server was very arrogant and gives me attitude the whole time. During paying, their credit card machine does not work but he keeps blaming me. ( I used the same card the whole day in Amsterdam and met no problem at all.) I said how do you want to resolve this, he said it's your problem, not mine and refuse to collaborate. We tried a couple times and I asked if he had another card reader machine and he said no. At the end (10min arguing, laughing at me), I said we can call the police and let them resolve it. Then he led me to the front desk and there's another card read machine which was able to read my card successfully. (Again, proof my card works fine, it's their machine that's broken). Given his shitty attitude I said I want to talk to his manager, he said the manager is not there and there is nothing he can do. Then he just walked away and basically kicked me out of the restaurant . This is a very very poor experience and there's no respect for me. If you are not white, good luck 🤞

Yummy but service mentioned couple of times we would only have 60 min to dine

very commercial, only allow you to be there for 2 hours after 2 hours you are being send away. Also they want you to sit on the coach to eat, which is unacceptable since you will spill food everywhere. The lady that works here is really rude.

Me and my friend got ribs and oysters, ribs were really nice but both of us got food poisoning after, I think it's because of the the oysters. We threw up after few hours we had dinner, and it took us almost 4 days to get better.

Traditional delicious food amazing meat

Our expectation with my 14 years old son was so high with Castell before we went there on 30th of December 2024. But unfortunately there is no Hygiene. Rate were running trough our dinner table and the answer of the restaurant was just “this is Amsterdam”. Sure i will never visit again. There is no accepted excuse for any restaurant which cant take the mouses out. In case of rejection, i have added the photo of the official reply.

Beautiful environment, the staff is pleasant and helps you with your choices! It is not from the cheapest store, but it is worth it because its meats are very tasty!

Top restaurant, cozy atmosphere with friendly and hospitable staff. Definitely recommended for the best steak in Amsterdam. We enjoyed it and will definitely come back.

I had the best ribs I’ve ever eaten at this restaurant. The ambiance feels relaxing and inviting. The steaks were top quality, perfectly seasoned, and cooked exactly right. I will make a stop here every time I go to Amsterdam.

Had a delicious meal at Castell this evening. Selected a nice bottle of wine, a few oysters followed by a generous portion of tuna tataki and a delicious grilled ribeye as a main course. Friendly service and a nice informal atmosphere. We will definitely come back!

If I were able to give 0 star, I would. Terrible service and food. Doesn’t worth the price and service charge. There’s so much more options to choose from in the city than dining in this restaurant.

The staff was super nice! We had to eat quickly because we had an appointment and they kept their word. In less than 1 hour we ate and it was excellent!

It was the first place we wanted to go to in Amsterdam and everyone recommended it. Everything was really delicious, especially the pork ribs were great. The butters that came with the bread as a starter were also amazing.

Great place for a perfectly made steak!

Why why why why do they use the word restaurant. There are only tables outside on the terrace, there is no (dining) table inside. It seems that the business was converted into a café in the 1980s and they now call themselves a restaurant. So you're eating at a coffee table or at a bar!!!! When you enter, the first impression is a nice, quiet, friendly Amsterdam atmosphere. But it soon feels like the real Amsterdam catering industry that you are as good as the bill you pay. Take your time, they say when you enter, it is quiet, after which you are immediately asked if you want a bread basket and if you want to order yet, because nice and friendly quickly turns into pushy, as a customer you are simply a piece of turnover. . When ordering the spare ribs we ask if there are different flavors, no, the answer is only the best quality????? But it must be said that THEY ARE DELICIOUS SPARERIBS, they are really perfectly prepared. And if you're a petite woman, the portion on your cutting board is enough. In addition to the spareribs, I also ordered a salad and it came later because if the salad is prepared in advance it becomes soft. That sounds good, but if you then receive a plate with the contents of a bag of chopped salad mix that can come straight from the supermarket with a ready-made dressing, then preparing in advance is a big decision (and to be honest, the side salad only costs 5 euros). The meat is excellent, you have to decide for yourself what you think about the price when you look at the menu. But it is not a restaurant, perhaps a cafe, difficult to explain with these prices. Besides the EXCELLENT meat there is nothing worth it. And the employees really don't care. My table (at the bar!) ordered meat and was told if you want potatoes with it, don't expect a baked potato. A cup of coffee was made for a customer. It was set up on the bar, then the bartender started being friendly and forgot about the coffee to give it to the customer 10 minutes later. The meat is a big 10, as a catering industry in general and a restaurant in particular it is a 2. Castell is really not worth a visit.

Needed a reservation but they let us sit at the bar. We had lobster soup, frog legs ( not my choice), and ribs. Ribs were awesome!! Don't forget to make reservations!! And enjoy!!

Unchanged good and cozy! It has been a tradition for our company for years.

We arrived without a reservation, as usual, but were lucky to find a perfect spot at the bar. I had been curious about the frog legs I’d seen in photos, and they exceeded my expectations—moist, flavorful, and paired with a fantastic sauce. We also tried the ribs, which were equally impressive—tender and delicious, a perfect reward after a long day of walking. Though we stayed at the bar, the restaurant gave off a cozy, inviting vibe overall.

Another big bastard who was flattered by Xiaohongshu’s compliments. First of all, Asians were not allowed to wash their hands. When we entered the store, we were the next table. The next table impatiently asked us to wait and turned around with smiles on our faces to the white people in line behind us. Hang clothes and arrange the table. After taking a seat, order the food before the neighbor next door, and the same dish will be served to others first. There is no English version of the drink menu. The old waiter in the store came over and we pointed out which wine we wanted. He asked me to read a sentence that he couldn't see and asked me to read it out. Me? ? ? Except for the decent food, the other experiences are at a lower limit. The lights are dim, the meat is placed on the dining board and you are given a rattan mat to put on your lap to eat. You are afraid of pricking yourself. If you say it is a specialty, it is not uniform across the whole store, so you can I spent the same money and watched others eating at the bar and at the table, and even though there was a seat at the bar, I asked if I could change seats but was ignored. When paying the bill, it was the old man again, who directly forced a tip, euphemistically calling it a service fee. When asked if it was a tip, he kept arguing that it was a service fee and not tips. He refused twice before giving up and pretending that he would give it to you this time. . I would like to ask you, from the moment I walked in to the checkout, you were the most enthusiastic when you handed me the bill. I don’t know where the so-called service is. And, old man, you can’t see it because of your poor eyesight and the light is dim. Why are the words on the bill bigger than those on the menu? The color is still light, but you can point to the details in the bill and ask me for the service fee. When you see the money, you will open up, right? In short, if you want to eat the unjust rice, just give it a try, and no one will say anything once you eat it.

We were placed at the back, behind the chimney, which is not very pleasant with a pole in front of your nose with your 2nd... but it still remains my favorite Amsterdam restaurant! Good service and great food, even after all these years, nothing has changed...delicious!

Incredible ribs and very friendly staff

Very good restaurant, ordered two roast pork ribs, the meat was soft and tender. The waiter was very nice. When he saw it was two Asian ladies, he asked if he wanted to drink soda. The service fee is only 5%, which is very nice.

Food served here is amazing, especially the pork ribs and the steaks, atmosphere is good too, not your regular restaurant settings but more of a shared space shared seatings if you don’t mind all that, one downside though, the floor staffs need professional training like service comms skill class, do customers need to be educated by service staffs? Do you have to be rude to your paying masters? Customers are just here to eat your delicious food and pay you money for that, we spent €400 euros in less than 40mins dining in your restaurant, probably we are the ones paid the most in your restaurant, there is no need to be rude to your customers even though there’s mistakes or problems, well in fact you’re working here to solve your customer’s problems not give them more frustrations when they’re just here to have a good time, something this set of service staffs need to learn and take note, please get them in the communication skill class they need it, no doubt best ribs in Amsterdam hence kudos to their kitchen staffs and chefs, but service staffs 👎 please work on that

We went there with a bunch of random people to eat and drink. Asked to be flexible in terms of menu and to make tapas-like snacks from various items. The lady in question agreed and the food was fantastic and also affordable for the location. All in all highly recommended!

Get the prawns pill pill and then the flat iron or the the fillet and definitely get the lamb chops 💯

Watching the cook working on the grill, I was disappointed to see that the meat was being cooked directly in the flames, which goes against health protocols and is carcinogenic.

Service is so bad. Ordered oysters, never came and had to cancel. Ordered a coke, never came and had to cancel. Forced to tip as well, felt like we were in America lol. Steak and Chicken were good though.

We eat good meat, but the thing they don't tell you is that you have to specify, when booking, that you want the table otherwise you eat on the sofa with the tray on your lap like at home on a Sunday evening in front of the TV when you're tired and you don't feel like setting the table...

Don't go! The waitress there is a racist. She was very rude. His collegue asked me and my friend sit on one table outside. After a minute, she came and just said "You can't sit here" without "Hello" and "Excuse me". And she didn't serve us pre-dinner bread. Besides, she added something we didn't order in the bill (5 euros). In contrast, I saw she was kind and smiling with the other tables sitted by white guys.

And I waited for the people who came three hundred years later than me to check out and leave before eating😽A very interesting experience🥂🥂🥂The food is indeed starfish. No other place does steak the way steak should be done. Fantastic food, great service and having laughs with staff who the make the atmosphere welcoming and fun. Cant wait to go back

I’ve never ever seen a place in Europe that ask every single guest to order a drink and ask us to round up from 66 to 70 when paying, this is insane and not recommended for tourists.

7/10 Spareribs were definitely not the best in town but still decent, black angus steak was chewy. Dessert was delicious. Chairs were not comfortable, might want to sit on a sofa next time, but there are no tables and you'll have to eat on your knees? Weird for me. Staff was active and friendly.

I came here on the recommendation of a friend. I had the short ribs, frog legs, and salad. There was no problem with the cooking, but There was a young male waiter who was clearly unfriendly towards us (from reading other reviews, it seems like he doesn't like people who aren't white).We wanted to leave quickly, so we ordered to share and finished the meal quickly. The meat dishes were delicious considering the price, but the salad looked like a bag salad from a convenience store. It is not recommended that you come as a Japanese person alone, even if you are with a Dutch person. We visited this restaurant based on a friend's recommendation. We ordered short ribs, frog legs, and salad. The food was okay, but we had an unpleasant experience with one of the young male waiters. It seemed like he was unfriendly to us, possibly due to our race. Wanting to leave quickly, we ordered and finished our meal promptly. The meat dishes were decent for the price, but the salads appeared to be similar to those from a supermarket bag. I'm not sure if I would recommend this place for a Japanese except for a mixed group of Dutch, especially after the unwelcoming treatment we received.

I've been there twice, and compared to the signature ribs, I prefer the chicken, it's very tender and flavorful. The shrimp and bread are also delicious. The lighting is a bit too dim, but everything else is great!

Nice little restaurant by the canal. Food was ok however the service was terrible. We waited for 50 minutes for main courses for two. Realizing that the people who came after us have already gotten their meals, we kindly asked the waiter whether our food was ready too. The waiter seemed careless and replied by saying “It is coming. This is not a McDonald”. During the 50 minutes nobody checked up on us despite my effort to make eye contact. They do seem pretty chatty and helpful with clients on other tables tho 🙂😅 We ended up spending €90 on our meal so I think it is reasonable to ask for a better service. I def would not visit again.

The waiter was very nice and friendly. The reason I gave the food three stars its because it is very expensive compered to the taste. I got the entrecôte and I was thinking, this I could have made at home. There was nothing special about it. And the grilled vegetables were like: meh.... It didn't taste bad, it just didn't taste anything.

Had a highly disappointing and infuriating experience at Castell not once, but twice. Encountered a extremely rude and racist behavior from one of the waitresses even when we spoke to her nicely. Her tone of voice was condescending and made unprofessional facial expression towards us. Her attitude was downright insulting and I am absolutely appalled to experience such blatant racism for the first time ever. Such an employee should not be working in the service industry if this is how she treats customers. This behaviour is intolerable and has no place in any establishment. I believe everyone deserves basic respect and I deserve it too. Based on this experience, I advised others to avoid this place at all costs because they clearly do not value their patrons.

Don’t ruin your Amsterdam experience here. Came here on two separate days. On the first day, we were turned away because they were “full” and we were told that we should have made reservations beforehand. The space was empty but they were firm that the seats are all taken up. The next day, a friend of mine dropped at 5.45pm by to make a reservations for dinner. She was told that they do not accept reservations - only walk-ins are allowed. We are a party of 6 yet they sat my friend at the bar counter when there were tables comfortable for 6 available. She was then forced to order when the rest of us were making our way to the restaurant. After 10 mins, the waitress told my friend that they were “full” and could not accommodate the rest of us. How is that possible when they have already sat her down at the bar counter with 5 empty seats around her? When we arrived the restaurant, again we were turned away. The restaurant is not full yet they claimed that they were. The waitress even rolled her eyes at us. These made me deduce that this restaurant is racist towards asians and from all the 1 star reviews here, it’s prevalent that it is true. The food may be good but if they’re unable to treat people equally, then no one should patronise this place. Better food, better service and better atmosphere can be found in other restaurants nearby.

Fabulous place to eat! Great ribeye steak, grilled vegetables and salad!

We started with a spot on the benches, not knowing that we would also eat on the benches. Not quite our thing, so we asked for another spot and ended up at the low bar. Not a great start for us, but the food made up for it! The meat and baguette had a delicious grill and smoke flavor. The meat comes with 2 sauces, but the meat was much tastier on its own! The dessert was also delicious. Highly recommended!

We had an experience last night while we were supposed to enjoy the Euro2024 final game in this venue. Although we made a specific reservation (via phone & web) to watch the game, we were served only TV videos without audio. We kindly asked the staff to turn the audio on, but it was rejected since it was not a Netherlands game! We could not enjoy the game despite the tasty food and flawless delivery. We had to go to another place.

Meat was excellent, as requested, tasty nothing to add, for those who like to eat a good piece of meat this is in the right place, bread starter I think that for the restaurant in question it deserved better bread or something more interesting, prawns a dose of 6 I just found out 😅, we ate outside by choice but then it became unpleasant, but otherwise I recommend it to anyone who loves meat…

If I could give 0 star to the service I definitely would! The waiter was so rude. She said coat and hats were not allowed?!?! And immediately asked us to order, saying compulsory to order one drink and one main each person but didn’t provide us the menu?!?! When we asked for the menu for few times she insisted she only have wine menu. What’s wrong with this restaurant? There are a lot of nice restaurants down the street, just avoid this one please!

It's a castell experience where you literally served food on your lap. The food was excellent ( snails and lambChops and ribs). Service was fast on a weekday evening without reservation.

I recently visited this restaurant and was very disappointed with my experience. It seemed that Asian and other people of color were being seated in the darker, less desirable corners of the restaurant. Additionally, it appeared that tips were being enforced specifically for Asian customers. This treatment was clearly discriminatory and made my dining experience very uncomfortable

When you visit Amsterdam, you should add this place to your list of food hunting. Easy access through trams. The restaurant sits right next to a canal so sitting outside is definitely recommended. I order led ribs - the meat is juicy and tender.

Street dining today, absolutely delicious food. Steak and pasta were our foodie of choice. Service was good with a lively outside atmosphere. Make a reservation a must.

One of my friends recommended this restaurant to me for three years, claiming that it was the best spearibs restaurant. I thought to myself that even if that were the case, he had praised the most highly and that it would therefore always be disappointing. I have been back four times since I visited and am pleasantly surprised every time. The service is good and friendly and the food is fantastic. I was there again yesterday and this time had the prawns as a starter, absolutely fantastic. I recommend everyone to try it once.

Food was good. Service not so much. We were forced to give service fees when there’s little to none services. Our bill was €82.5 and the staff insisted on billing €90. I refused and he kept pushing and said, “in America you pay service fee.” Sure, but this is not America. There were also mouses running around. I’ve probably seen four during the course of dinner. I brought it up to the staff’s attention (the same person that insisted on charging me service fee). He said “yeah sometimes the mouse come out running around at night” and disregarded the issue. Way overrated. Worst price - quality mix, I have experienced for a looong time. Worst service in Amsterdam. They only bring your food ( seems quite enough, no ? ) they are not even bothering asnwering few questions on the menu, they all look unhappy and robotic. You dont feel the warmth of a restaurant and feel welcomed. Food, classic meat restaurant, and my Prime rib was served not very warm. They brought the salad 5 mins after main course ( reminded them probably forgot ) The desert brownie, definitely dont chose that. Their bottle and by the glass wine selection is not the best. And go there if you enjoy eating food with a tray on your lap, there is no table setting.

Attention everyone! ! ! ⚠️ The food is okay, but the service from the staff is really not good. This is the first time I am forced to tip when eating/consuming in the Netherlands. The waiter did not provide particularly good service and did not inform me in advance. During the checkout, he sent an older man to threaten me with extra charges. I want to ask who gave them the courage to do things like this? Is it because he is a racist?

The blond waitress had a bad face towards the Asian girls. She didn't introduce the menu, forced her to order drinks, and answered questions with a blank face. The service was as bad as it could be. In comparison, she knelt down on one knee when serving white people. Service with a smile and detailed explanation. I beg Asians to have some backbone and stop recommending this restaurant.

Top restaurant! We had a delicious meal! Reservations are definitely recommended! Despite the crowds, the staff is super friendly and helpful (especially the attentive man at the door!) We were very surprised at the prices here, not expensive at all! Especially for what you get and everything about it. Everything was perfect from start to finish! We will definitely be back to finish the menu!
