A veeeery disappointing experience. We had a reservation, but were not served despite that. The curly-haired employee was very unfriendly, racist, and gave us a dismissive impression. Moreover, this wasn't the first time!!! During a previous visit, she had it in for us as well. We will never come back here again.

Look, I get it — Castell has that whole quirky “sit on a couch and eat meat off a wooden tray on your lap” vibe. It’s their thing. But holy crap, the way they treat some guests is next level. Walked in, got shoved straight into the corner like we were being punished, while tables kept filling up with normal seating for everyone who came after us. No one came by for drinks, no water, nothing. Had to basically hunt down staff like it was a side quest. Meanwhile, later arrivals get smiles, prompt service, and actual chairs. If you’re wondering if the “rude service” and “ignored in the bad seats” complaints are real… yeah, just scroll through the other reviews here. You’re not alone. Apparently the sofa lottery only works if you look like you belong in the main area. Food might be decent (didn’t stick around long enough to fully judge), but the experience? Save your money and your dignity — there are plenty of other steakhouses in Amsterdam that don’t make you feel like an afterthought. Never again.

It's worth making a reservation. We sat outside. It was perfect. The salmon, the spare ribs, the beer, everything is very tasty. Affordable prices. Recommended

The lamb chops were tender and had a wonderful charcoal grill flavor, and they were a perfect match with the freshly pulled Heineken. The staff were also very friendly!

This experience raised serious concerns about potential racial discrimination within the restaurant. I have zero tolerance for any form of discrimination. Therefore, I ultimately chose not to enter this restaurant and will never consider going there again.

Do not come if you're not white. My family were seated at a dark corner with no tables even though many tables were empty. We ordered some drinks first and the tall skinny black haired waitress was quite cold and rudely told us that she could not understand what my dad was saying, because he had a slight accent. When we tried to order some food they said we ordered too little and they're not able to make it because apparently it was going to be peak dinner time soon, which were fine with us as we were going to leave anyways. In the end we paid for the drinks only and thanked the waitress but she didn't even say anything back before leaving. If you read the reviews here there are countless other reviews saying this restaurant is racist, but given that they don't reply to the reviews and don't correct their action it is clear they don't care about being racist. My favourite meat restaurant in amsterdam great food!

Make a reservation before coming. They can seat up to a max of 10 persons. They also have individual seating on the bar side counter. I ordered off the menu Angus Ribeye Steak and it was divine. The meat was tender and fatty with all the hallmarks of quality cooked to perfection. The lamb chops were outstanding and generous portion sizes. The ribs were tender and fall of the bone with a very nicely coated savoury and sweet sauce. A big mention is to order all the dishes with their baked potatoes! One of the the best I have tasted ever. The service was friendly and sincere especially so to a group of Asian customers. The atmosphere was very cozy timber cottage vibe. I have been here many times but this deserves a review this time round for consistency and quality of food .

The ribeye was very very good; so juicy and tender. The starters were fine, nothing special. Only thing I was missing were fries. They only had a baked potato instead. Also, we didn’t know we were NOT getting a table. We had to eat off our laps, which was a surprise, but a funny experience.

We went for the spare ribs, fillet steak, and steak tartare and they were absolutely delicious.

Unique place with excellent food and atmosphere.

Food was delicious as was wine. We started with tuna tartare and escargots.. We then had special Angus rib eye and the ribs from the grill that were delicious. Service was great. A very fun evening in very relaxed surroundings.

An old place, with delicious meat, pleasant presentation, the option of sitting around lounge tables, excellent appetizers, carpaccio, steak tartare and smoked fish. The ribs are excellent, the steaks are tender, worth it!

The best ribs I've had outside the US, unfortunately… It's impossible to sit facing each other. All the seats are side-by-side. You're either at the bar (facing a rather unfriendly bartender), facing a wall, or on booths barely 40cm off the ground with your knees practically touching your chin. In short, not great 😩. As for red meat, you can find better elsewhere (in Amsterdam) and, above all, cheaper options. Regarding the service, the meat arrives on wooden boards: it's a nice touch, but it doesn't keep the meat warm, and the dish gets cold quickly. As for drinks, there's no menu 😳 (except for the wine list). So you order without knowing what else is available to drink, or what the price will be. That's shameful, even dishonest. In short, go there for ribs and a beer, but for anything else, you're better off going somewhere else.

A place that you should visit when you are in Amsterdam .

Excellent spot for very well-grilled meat. Side dishes are limited, unless you like baked potatoes or a simple bowl of greens. The wine selection is a bit bland; the house wine is due for replacement. The service is delightfully down-to-earth, quick, and no fuss. A lovely place to visit every now and then.

The ribs were delicious, and the fruit on the side was refreshing. The sauce was just okay, in my opinion. The service was alright, but we waited a long time to pay. Also, I went alone, and sitting on the edge was really dark; I really wanted to turn on a flashlight.

I could tell how popular this restaurant is when it was just 5pm but the place was already busy. The grill is really good, I ordered the lamp chop, the meat was tender, and the serving was big. The wine matched perfectly with the dish. And the atmosphere was warm.

We sat at the bar on a busy evening and received excellent service. The food was spectacular — we had the Diavola pizza and the spicy vodka pasta, which was an unbelievable combination. Dip your crust in that vodka sauce and wash it down with a cold draft beer. We had a great date night and ended up staying longer for the exceptional espresso martinis and delicious cocktails. For sure, a 5/5 dinner and drinks in Amsterdam.

The ribs were great, however the service was extremely unpleasant. From the get go, it took ages to get seated as they ignored us despite the restaurant being half empty. We were sat outside & asked for tap water - which they denied us and requested us to order drinks. We ordered 2 beers and they still wouldn’t give us tap water as they “can’t serve water outside”. Super rude attitude while laughing and chatting with other guests. Don’t bother giving your money to a restaurant who is rude & racist.

BAD EXPERIENCE !!!! 👎 The staff treated customers very differently. We were ignored and made to wait a long time for takeaway, while others were seated within minutes. The contrast was obvious and unacceptable. The staff were not busy. They were just chatting and ignoring us.

If you are looking for a delicious and reasonbly priced steak cooked over a flame grill, then you should go to Castell. I ordered the ribeye medium rare and it was perfect. I would eat at Castell again anytime.

The food is amazing, the meat, fish and lobster are beyond fantastic, the chef at the grill is creating wonders, but the staff is problematic and arrogant. The blonde waitress is incredibly haughty; you call her and she doesn't come, she turns her head away as she passes by, and when she does come, she speaks rudely. You say "English please," and she speaks Dutch, then says something like, "Why don't you speak Dutch?" I don't have to know your language, you are there to serve the customer as waiters… Our salad arrived after all the other dishes were finished, we sent it back, and I saw the kitchen staff throw the salad bowl. We were sitting in front of the grill… The bill for two people was 221 Euros, with the tip it came to 233 Euros… The food was worth it, but because of the staff, I will never go again… I regretted tipping them later; the waiters don't deserve it at all. This behavior might not be a problem for tourists, after all, they only come once, but for people living in Amsterdam, this is extremely rude. Thank you…

I first ate here in 2013, and it's the same friendly atmosphere and the same delicious food. If you want to enjoy a pleasant and delicious meat meal in Amsterdam, Castell is the right place. I recommend making a reservation.

Quirky restaurant with an odd style of serving its customers by eating your meals off a tray on your lap. However, food was good, but again, some quirky serving options, such as, Serloin Steak with baked potato, salad and odd selection of fruit, such as melon, kiwi and orange. Enjoyed the experience, it was just a bit quirky.

A wonderful experience at Castell in Amsterdam! Cozy atmosphere, friendly staff, and delicious food. Everything was perfectly taken care of. Highly recommended – definitely worth a visit!

We reserved a table for 10pm. We got there on time and asked to wait. When the waiter arrived, she decided that she could not give us a table because, apparently, one of us was "too stoned". None was, and indeed the guy guilty of having a tired face suffers from diabete and just needed some carbs and sugar. We decided not to insist and find something to eat somewhere else, even if it was too late to find something good. I'll never come back there and I sincerely advise you not to patronise their business.

It was recommended to us by a local and it didn't disappoint. We ate next to the fireplace. There's no table in this area, but they provide a cutting board to place on your lap. It's not the most comfortable, but it makes you feel right at home, and it was fantastic. The meat was delicious. I would recommend it for a romantic dinner.

I got the Black Angus, and honestly, it's a winner—delicious! The fries with the sauce are also great. I recommend trying it.

Walked in this evening (Tuesday) at 22:20 without a reservation. Cozy atmosphere and friendly staff. We were able to sit down immediately and the food arrived quickly. Had a delicious meal, tender and fresh meat. Good flavor and good portions! We will definitely be back!! Highly recommended for meat lovers!

We had dinner later that evening. The carpaccio appetizer was tasteless. The atmosphere was nice, and we ate on the couch with our plate on our lap. The service was excellent.

Unfortunately, our visit was very disappointing. The tall, blond waiter was extremely unfriendly, unprofessional, and appeared discriminatory in the way he treated guests. His behavior was completely inappropriate and negatively affected the entire experience. This is especially disappointing because the restaurant itself is very nice and has a lot of potential. However, a single employee with such an unfriendly and disrespectful attitude can ruin the overall impression of the place. Based on this experience, I unfortunately cannot recommend this restaurant.

Good food and atmosphere but limited choice of drinks and quite expensive

The dishes was absolutely delicious especially chicken, but why was the water so expensive? The water cost the same as a dessert and was even more expensive than all the side dishes on the menu. The price made no sense. Aside from that, everything we ate was very delicious.

This is a steakhouse focused mainly on barbecue and grilled meat. It was our first time here and we wanted to give it a chance. We went without a reservation and were told there was availability for 1.5 hours, which worked for us. We ordered bottle of wine,ribeye, ribs, and side dish, and honestly, everything we ate was delicious. The food was truly successful the meats were cooked perfectly and full of flavor. We really enjoyed what we ate and were very satisfied with the quality of the food. However, due to the concept of the place, sitting down and eating comfortably was quite difficult. I can say that it was not very comfortable and I didn’t fully enjoy the dining experience in that sense. The atmosphere itself is very nice and beautifully decorated, especially for the New Year, which we appreciated a lot. That said, having to eat on the service board placed on your lap was uncomfortable, and reaching for your drink was sometimes difficult at least at the spot where we were seated. This comment is based specifically on our seating area. Regarding service, I can’t say we were completely satisfied. Overall, it was acceptable, and in general we were still pleased, but there were some attitudes particularly from one female staff member that didn’t feel very welcoming or professional. I won’t go into details, as it was something that could be tolerated and didn’t overshadow the overall experience. In summary, the food was excellent and definitely the highlight of the visit. With a more comfortable seating setup and slightly more attentive service, this place could be even better.

The food was good, but the service was AWFUL. It was our first time here, so we needed some time to look through the menu. The waiter said we were taking too long and didn’t even confirm our order with us, so we were left completely confused about what we had actually ordered. When we paid, the waiter even gave us an attitude. Overall, the experience was not good.

What a fantastic place! I had spare ribs with salad, honestly the best spare ribs I've ever had. Then I shared a dessert of sugar bread with my friend. Also incredibly delicious. All of this in a uniquely retro and intimate atmosphere with great music. Definitely recommended!!!!

The food is great. The steak was cooked properly and the kitchen clearly knows what they’re doing. But the service? Absolutely unacceptable. I was seated in a dark, unlit corner even though plenty of tables were open. Then the waiter didn’t bother to give me a menu, didn’t acknowledge me, didn’t check in — nothing. I sat there completely ignored. For an establishment charging premium prices, this is embarrassing. As an Asian diner, the way I was treated felt blatantly dismissive and racist. There’s a big difference between busy restaurant and simply refusing to serve someone. This was the latter. Fantastic food, ruined by front-of-house staff who make certain customers feel like they don’t belong. If you’re Asian or a minority traveler, think twice before coming here.

I haven't been here in about 18 years!!! No clue why it took me so long 🤔? The steaks were some of the best I've had in a very long time( outside of my kitchen 😁)....We were treated like Kings and we walked out with full bellies!!!

One of my favourite go to restaurant in Amsterdam for steak. Booking is essential as walk ins are often turned away unfortunately. High chair bar counter seating for smaller groups and the u shape sofa for bigger groups or sharing. The lobster bisque with brandy is a good start for a cold winter's day. The French onion soup was just as good. Usually I'll order the ribble, but instead I tried the special of the day, the black Angus, no regrets. Cooked perfectly and the condiments sauce were tasty. I had the seasonal vegetables side which was not worth the money. The spare ribs comes with a generous sauce and the meat slides off the bone. House wine pour paired well with the steak. The dinner atmosphere was dim and cozy. Service with Dutch hospitality.

Great grilled meat and fish in an informal place with kind service and warm ambiance. No tables, just the counter and sofas. I recommend the counter.

The overall experience was quite good. The pork ribs were indeed grilled very well, and the two dipping sauces were also well-seasoned. In comparison, the appetizers were just average. The shrimp were very ordinary shrimp (a bit pricey considering the price), and the snails were a bit too salty. Some reviews mentioned that the waiters' attitude was poor, and I did have that feeling to some extent, but I think it was more a matter of competence than attitude. As for those who dislike the seats near the sofas, at least in my opinion, the atmosphere there was quite nice.

What a great place and great food this is!

I had a disappointing experience. Sitting on a couch and eating food on your lap is not ideal. The steak was delicious, but instead of kiwi and melon, fries would have been a much better choice — the fruits just don’t fit the dish. Also, instead of calling it “vegetables,” you should simply say “uncooked asparagus,” as that’s all that was served. The service was mixed: the waiters were very attentive, but the manager seemed to prioritise money over customer comfort. We asked to move to another table that was free, but the manager refused, saying it was reserved. However, the table stayed empty during our entire visit, which was quite frustrating. I hope the restaurant takes this feedback into account and continues to improve.

If you just look at the meat on your plate, Castell is a good restaurant. However, everything else about it didn't appeal to us. We were particularly disappointed by the fact that you have to eat your food on your lap with a placemat. You'd rather eat dishes like that at a table and a chair. We also paid €10 each for grilled vegetables as a side dish. This amounted to two grilled green asparagus spears with some sauce. The fruit garnish with the meat wasn't a good match either. All in all, not a success.

In the Netherlands it is not mandatory to give tip, but they pressuring customers by notifying multiple times that tip is not included is outright rude. Such a disgrace for our Dutch culture.

People there very nice & friendly. I told one of the guy that i have only an hour to eat and he made it for me. And being Asian, we dont have this tipping practice with us, i forgot to tip them~~ and as i am following tour i am not able to return to give them the tip. But i will remember this restaurant and tip the next time i come! On the foods, Asian prefers more flavourful escargot & i find Naughty Nuri ribs is more to my taste~

We visited this restaurant on Thursday, August 28th, around 7 p.m. The food was truly delicious, especially the meat dishes—we were really impressed with the quality. However, our experience was unfortunately spoiled by the tall, short-haired male waiter serving the outside tables. His attitude came across as rude and unfriendly, and it left us feeling uncomfortable on the very last day of our Amsterdam trip. Amsterdam is such a welcoming, touristic city, and we had met many kind and warm-hearted people during our stay. That’s why this incident was surprising and disappointing. I still recommend the restaurant for its excellent food, but I hope the management pays attention to staff behavior so that future guests can enjoy both the service and the food equally.

I ate here for the first time, and it will be my last. From the start, it was completely misleading. When I walked in and was presented with the menu, I skipped it and immediately ordered spare ribs—that's what I came for, after all. I specifically asked what came with the ribs, and the waiter said, "vegetables and baked potato." Fine, agreed. I also ordered two glasses of red wine. I was surprised when the bill arrived: €59.00! I'd paid €64.00, including the tip, without paying attention at the time because I was already talking. It wasn't until I was on my way home that I saw the bill and was stunned: besides the spare ribs, the receipt listed three glasses of red wine (€18!), seasonal vegetables (€6!), and a mixed salad (€6!). I didn't order any of this. I immediately went back and asked for a manager—but he either couldn't or wouldn't come. Instead, the same server came up with a scandalous response: they only wanted to reimburse the wine. His explanation? "It clearly states on the menu that extras are charged separately. We don't have to tell everyone that. You ate it all, didn't you?" Unbelievable! How on earth was I supposed to know this when I'd never even looked at the menu and had just been informed by him? This is pure fraud, deception, and shameless money-making. Making customers pay for "extras" that aren't even clearly communicated is absolutely despicable. This kind of practice is ruining the hospitality industry and shows exactly what kind of business this is: a place where honesty and customer service are of no value. I'm never coming back and will warn everyone around me to avoid this place. They're nothing less than jerks who deliberately mislead their customers.

I give it a 5 stars for the Black Angus Prime Ribeye steak which was really good. The sides were not the best. Definitely not what I thought a garden salad would be. I wasn't expecting fruit. The potato was big and hot, but I could probably skip it next time. The steak was amazing though and I saw someone get the ribs that looked pretty good.
