I showed up early and the servers were incredibly helpful and accomodating. Service was fast and I was in and out in under an hour. The staff all took care of me and were very kind and attentive. The food was incredible, exactly as expected for the price.

My favourite chill out place in AMS with colleagues. They are able to accommodate 12 of us and extraordinary service rendered 😊 The food was delicious, prompt delivery and friendly staff 😍

Horrible racist place and THE WORST STEAK I have ever had in my life!! Our steak was so bad I was hoping we wouldn’t get sick after. One of them was super fatty the other extremely dry and I couldn’t even finish my steak😭 The way especially older waiters reacts to us was horrible. He purposely made us wait for hours to bring our food. He literally rolled his eyes when our late guess asked for a drinking menu😂 Poor guy who asked for menu was shocked and asking us why they hate us! I was so embarrassed to pick this place. I hope every tourist sees my comment.

I had the Kreeften Soep (Lobster soup) with Cognac at 12 Euros, and Spare Ribs without sides at 24 Euros. Both were excellent and the ribs are barbecued with burnt ends. The meat comes off cleanly from the bones 🦴. Easy to eat, and is finger licking delicious.

Had a delicious bite to eat for my birthday. Price quality ratio is great. The T-Bone steak was great. Cozy old-fashioned atmosphere. As if you walk into an old cozy barn. Nice place at the bar where we were helped by Jeroen. Great service and good laughs. Thank you Jeroen, you made our evening! 👍🏻 The rest of the staff was also very friendly. In short: Great evening! The reviews made me nervous until I remembered I’m not Asian.. Although fortunately the couple next to us seemed to be treated with the same level of hospitality! Incredible food and fantastic friendly service. Interesting seating methods on a lounge with trays but we seemed to do fine. Can’t expect much more for a walk-in without reservation.

Lovely atmosphere, great service and the spare ribs are fantastic by the way.

Cracking steak (Black Angus rib-eye), nice Malbec. Slightly unusual set up where you sit on a couch and eat off of trays, but it's fine. The server Jerome was very friendly and helpful, and the rest of the staff seemed nice.

Everything was ruined by the arrogant waiter (Peter?), who pretended not to hear any of our requests and of course our wishes were not even listened to, let alone fulfilled. For example - upon request (which shouldn't even be asked if you are serving steak) to bring freshly ground pepper for the steaks - he said- where is the store's pepper grinder on the table - grind it yourself! Not to mention the uncomfortable tables for eating... you have to eat on your lap or bend over at a Japanese-style table. It is incomprehensible why the company can't buy normal tables for eating. I would tolerate this if the waiter was hospitable, but his attitude towards the customer was disgusting. I would not recommend going there.

RACIST staff. Visit at your own risk if you want to be discriminated. My friend chose this place and made a reservation. I arrived earlier than my friend and the waiter walked past me three times totally ignoring me. I walked into the restaurant and another waiter half ignored me. Finally shown to a table with no attention given till my British friend came and the waiter who ignored me came and was totally friendly asking him what we wanted to eat etc. My friend had three beers and after the third, the waiter collected the glass and did not ask us anymore if we wanted more drinks. When we asked for bill, I offered to give my friend a treat. The waiter who ignored me earlier shamelessly asked me if I wanted to give a tip (never in my many years in Amsterdam was I ever asked directly to give a tip no matter how good the service was). Of course I said no to giving a cent more for racist treatment. I would have walked away at the start if my friend had not chose n reserved the place. This food is at most average so I did not bother taking any photo. I will never visit again.

I was really looking forward to dining here after hearing great things about their ribs and food. Unfortunately, the experience was disappointing from the moment we arrived. We had made a reservation for dinner and were seated on a sofa, which we assumed was a waiting area. After placing our order, I politely asked if we could sit outside instead, as it was a lovely day. To our surprise, the young male waiter became immediately defensive and aggressive—cutting us off mid-sentence, rolling his eyes, scoffing, and speaking to us in a rude, disrespectful manner. He insisted it was the restaurant’s “concept” to eat off your lap on the sofas, slouched over, without any attempt to communicate this clearly or respectfully. Feeling uncomfortable, I approached the hostess at the front. She offered us a table by the grill, but her attitude was no better. I explained what had happened, but instead of an apology, we were met with passive aggression and defensiveness. We ultimately decided to leave. Service is just as important as food—and in this case, it completely ruined the experience. Tip: Don’t go if you’re not Dutch. And be prepared to eat your food off your lap—even with a reservation. Worst dining experience I’ve had in a long time

Inside, they don’t have dining chairs and tables, instead there is a couch and people need to eat on their lap, which is incredibly uncomfortable for steaks.

It's super delicious. The waiter's service attitude was very good and he chatted with us. He saw that we took the cake and moved from the sofa to the bar. It is recommended to go when there are less people!

The food was good, however the service was horrible. I went with friends and we ordered some appetisers and mains. We weren't sure how hungry we were and how big the portions were, so we ordered 3 mains and 3 appetisers (with the intention of ordering more if it really wasn't enough for us). The staff that served us then demanded that we order 6 mains and refused to place the order until we have selected 6 mains. He finally relented after we selected 5 mains. When it was bill time, he decided to add an additional 15 euros, claiming that that was the service charge. Should I not be the one to decide how much tipping I should give and whether I want to give a tip? Your service crew should not be the one to decide. I am very disgusted by his behaviour and I would not recommend this restaurant unless you feel like being pushed into a corner on what you should order and how much you should pay. There are a lot of other restaurants in Amsterdam that gives you good food and a more pleasant dining experience.

11/10 spare ribs my GOD. Everything was great though - we had seasonal veg, jacket potato, bread and butter, then the hazelnut ice cream for dessert. Our bartender was also very attentive and had a good sense of humor. Overall a great choice for a pop-in dinner!

Let’s start with the food - it was very delicious, actually. The steak was amazing, and I loved the lobster bisque. It was also very very pricy, although I’m not sure if the pricing here is actually just standard for Amsterdam. Now I want to talk a bit about the seating - definitely reserve as early as you can, and I wasn’t really a fan of the sofa style table splitting. It was just… a bit awkward. It was a unique experience, for sure, but not really my cup of tea. I was quite uncomfortable eating on my lap (they do give you a lap table), and we split the area with 2 other groups of people. It’s an interesting but uncomfortable eating experience. I did find it really nice that the waiters could sit down next to you / on the shared low table and talked to you about the menu - that’s an extra level of intimacy / connection with your waiter that did help me feel more at ease. However, the general eating experience there was very uncomfortable, and I wouldn’t do it again. This isn’t the restaurant’s fault; I’m sure there are people who are fans of this style of dining, it just wasn’t me, and I had booked too late to get normal tables. Just wanted to warn the introverts among us before they try this.

If you're in Amsterdam and craving top-quality spare ribs, Castell is an absolute must-visit. The ribs were fall-off-the-bone tender, perfectly seasoned, and had just the right amount of smokiness—some of the best I've ever had. What makes the experience even better is the cozy, rustic vibe of the place and the outstanding service. The staff were warm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming without being intrusive. You can tell they really care about creating a great dining experience. Highly recommended!

Someone recommended this place to us as the best spare ribs place. And yes, spare ribs were soooo good! Can definitely recommend! Ribeye was also great. In general, food is very good here. On the other side, service was weird. A young waiter who didn’t know much and another lady who was very moody. Even though the concept of sitting next to the fireplace in a chill setting can be nice for snacks and drinks, having your dinner on your legs wasn’t the most comfortable activity. So keep this in mind.

We were three Chinese women who entered this restaurant on April 22, 2025. The staff treated us with visible impatience. One of us spoke limited English, and instead of assisting, the staff spoke extremely fast, refused to explain anything, and just stared at us silently, making us feel very uncomfortable. We were holding a bit of food we intended to store away, but before we could explain, it was taken directly from our hands. Then, we were told we must remove our jackets to dine, even though we were already wearing thin camisole dresses underneath. We explained we felt cold and didn’t want to remove them. No other guests were asked to do the same. It felt like targeted, unfair treatment. We left without eating. Extremely disappointing and unwelcoming.

The food was good . Reasonable prices. The service was poor and cold , it seems they were under staffed. The place was dark and crowded, seating was crammed. No recommend

My girlfriend and I made a reservation for 7:30 this evening to celebrate my birthday. We were very happy to get a table at this time. But when we came in, we waited for ten minutes and the front desk still didn't come. We had reserved a separate two-person table, but the front desk wouldn't let us sit there, saying that someone else had already reserved it. They made us sit in a corner. I negotiated with him, explaining that it was my birthday and asking if I could sit at that table since we had reserved a separate two-person table. Because we are Chinese, he said to me in a discriminatory tone, "If you can eat, eat. If you can't, sorry." Is this the service attitude? Is this how you treat customers? I hope the owner of this restaurant will teach the staff better.

( RACIAL DISCRIMINATION RESTAURANT!!!!) ❗️To all Asian people, avoid this restaurant unless you are okay with facing blatant racism and the worst dining experience imaginable. The most horrible service I’ve ever experienced…. The waiter (called Peter) was very racist, his service was completely bad just because we’re Asian. He greeted others quite passionately but didn’t say anything to us during the whole meal (including when he gave us the dishes and change the plates for us). I feel very very very upset and uncomfortable during the dinner. My friends and I didn’t do anything impolite but we were treated that way. I was so furious and deeply hurt… and will never visit again or recommend to others. ⚠️I also saw several other reviews mentioning the same racist behavior. This clearly shows that the restaurant doesn’t take racism seriously at all, and just lets it happen again and again. Please, don’t go to this restaurant…

Excellent friendly service. Reservations is a must unless u come early or late. The special was Black Angus Ribeye and it was the best steak I have had in a while. Magnificent marbling and done exactly medium rare. Such a joy till the last bite. A must visit!

Visited Castell's on arriving in Amsterdam. The staff were friendly and helpful, the food is very good - a beautiful Steak tartare starter was my highlight. The restaurant has a great laid back and stylish ambience.

Food was ok. Drink and service horrible. NEVER again, suggest anyone expecting at least average service to avoid. - Booked 2 for 1 (as there is no 1-person option), was told "next time this is a no" - Asked for drink menu, waiter said "we have almost everything here, what do you want" without any proactive recommendation - The cocktail (Sex on the beach)was below average quality, way too much orange meat - During payment waiter asked me to enter tip, I didn't and he became impatient "its fine just tap" - Last but not least, gave feedbacks on cocktail and service quality to another waitress, said will not come again, she shrugged and said "have a good night" as the only response

I first came to Castell almost twenty years ago. Today, after a long time, I ate there again and enjoyed it. They have never disappointed me. The food and service were top notch!

We had dinner Tuesday evening, the setting is pretty, servers smiling, friendly and efficient. We are French and a waitress speaks a little our language. What can we say about the quality of the dishes, we had a beef steak and lamb. We asked for rare, the cooking was perfect, and the taste magnificent. The huge potato on the side and the sauces that go with it. Just perfect, very good address that I obviously recommend.

Celebrated my birthday on March 20, 3rd time and every time great service and delicious food! I come from Alkmaar myself but this is one of my favorite restaurants! Our service Vicky was really a great woman! Very cozy and loved a chat and joke! Something I look for when I go to eat somewhere that someone enjoys their work! I also come from the catering industry and this company and especially Vicky gets a big thumbs up from us

Wow! Intimate eating experience. We got sat at the chef's table, opposite the grill. Great for watching those flames lick the incredible meat steaks.

Castell is a hidden gem—cozy, romantic, and tucked underground by the canal. We had the best seats in the house, right in front of the chef grilling all the meats to perfection. The steak and ribs were amazing - would def order again. The dessert special? Unreal. A banana masterpiece with ice cream, florentine, some bready element, and caramel-toffee sauce—absolute perfection. If you want incredible food, a warm vibe, and a front-row seat to the grill, Castell is a must. Can’t wait to go back!

Service is not customer oriented. More interested in the upcoming reservations and the seating arrangements. Didn’t expect to have dinner at the sofa with food on the lap. Not my way of having steak and ribs. Food quality is above-average, the settings may not be welcome by some.

They have a special setup for tables, sitting on couches with the food on your lap. The food is so good that it doesn t really matter where they put it. Fabuloso tournedos. Great wine selection, good wine…you pay for it of course.

Terrible service. First of all, they force you to buy a drink which they don't even have a soft drink menu (only a wine menu). Secondly， there's a 3 Euro service fee with very racial discrimination service. Since I'm Asian, the server was very arrogant and gives me attitude the whole time. During paying, their credit card machine does not work but he keeps blaming me. ( I used the same card the whole day in Amsterdam and met no problem at all.) I said how do you want to resolve this, he said it's your problem, not mine and refuse to collaborate. We tried a couple times and I asked if he had another card reader machine and he said no. At the end (10min arguing, laughing at me), I said we can call the police and let them resolve it. Then he led me to the front desk and there's another card read machine which was able to read my card successfully. (Again, proof my card works fine, it's their machine that's broken). Given his shitty attitude I said I want to talk to his manager, he said the manager is not there and there is nothing he can do. Then he just walked away and basically kicked me out of the restaurant . This is a very very poor experience and there's no respect for me. If you are not white, good luck 🤞

very commercial, only allow you to be there for 2 hours after 2 hours you are being send away. Also they want you to sit on the coach to eat, which is unacceptable since you will spill food everywhere. The lady that works here is really rude.

Me and my friend got ribs and oysters, ribs were really nice but both of us got food poisoning after, I think it's because of the the oysters. We threw up after few hours we had dinner, and it took us almost 4 days to get better.

Traditional delicious food amazing meat

Our expectation with my 14 years old son was so high with Castell before we went there on 30th of December 2024. But unfortunately there is no Hygiene. Rate were running trough our dinner table and the answer of the restaurant was just “this is Amsterdam”. Sure i will never visit again. There is no accepted excuse for any restaurant which cant take the mouses out. In case of rejection, i have added the photo of the official reply.

Beautiful environment, the staff is pleasant and helps you with your choices! It is not from the cheapest store, but it is worth it because its meats are very tasty!

Had a delicious meal at Castell this evening. Selected a nice bottle of wine, a few oysters followed by a generous portion of tuna tataki and a delicious grilled ribeye as a main course. Friendly service and a nice informal atmosphere. We will definitely come back!

The staff was super nice! We had to eat quickly because we had an appointment and they kept their word. In less than 1 hour we ate and it was excellent!

It was the first place we wanted to go to in Amsterdam and everyone recommended it. Everything was really delicious, especially the pork ribs were great. The butters that came with the bread as a starter were also amazing.

Why why why why do they use the word restaurant. There are only tables outside on the terrace, there is no (dining) table inside. It seems that the business was converted into a café in the 1980s and they now call themselves a restaurant. So you're eating at a coffee table or at a bar!!!! When you enter, the first impression is a nice, quiet, friendly Amsterdam atmosphere. But it soon feels like the real Amsterdam catering industry that you are as good as the bill you pay. Take your time, they say when you enter, it is quiet, after which you are immediately asked if you want a bread basket and if you want to order yet, because nice and friendly quickly turns into pushy, as a customer you are simply a piece of turnover. . When ordering the spare ribs we ask if there are different flavors, no, the answer is only the best quality????? But it must be said that THEY ARE DELICIOUS SPARERIBS, they are really perfectly prepared. And if you're a petite woman, the portion on your cutting board is enough. In addition to the spareribs, I also ordered a salad and it came later because if the salad is prepared in advance it becomes soft. That sounds good, but if you then receive a plate with the contents of a bag of chopped salad mix that can come straight from the supermarket with a ready-made dressing, then preparing in advance is a big decision (and to be honest, the side salad only costs 5 euros). The meat is excellent, you have to decide for yourself what you think about the price when you look at the menu. But it is not a restaurant, perhaps a cafe, difficult to explain with these prices. Besides the EXCELLENT meat there is nothing worth it. And the employees really don't care. My table (at the bar!) ordered meat and was told if you want potatoes with it, don't expect a baked potato. A cup of coffee was made for a customer. It was set up on the bar, then the bartender started being friendly and forgot about the coffee to give it to the customer 10 minutes later. The meat is a big 10, as a catering industry in general and a restaurant in particular it is a 2. Castell is really not worth a visit.

Needed a reservation but they let us sit at the bar. We had lobster soup, frog legs ( not my choice), and ribs. Ribs were awesome!! Don't forget to make reservations!! And enjoy!!

Unchanged good and cozy! It has been a tradition for our company for years.

We arrived without a reservation, as usual, but were lucky to find a perfect spot at the bar. I had been curious about the frog legs I’d seen in photos, and they exceeded my expectations—moist, flavorful, and paired with a fantastic sauce. We also tried the ribs, which were equally impressive—tender and delicious, a perfect reward after a long day of walking. Though we stayed at the bar, the restaurant gave off a cozy, inviting vibe overall.

Another big bastard who was flattered by Xiaohongshu’s compliments. First of all, Asians were not allowed to wash their hands. When we entered the store, we were the next table. The next table impatiently asked us to wait and turned around with smiles on our faces to the white people in line behind us. Hang clothes and arrange the table. After taking a seat, order the food before the neighbor next door, and the same dish will be served to others first. There is no English version of the drink menu. The old waiter in the store came over and we pointed out which wine we wanted. He asked me to read a sentence that he couldn't see and asked me to read it out. Me? ? ? Except for the decent food, the other experiences are at a lower limit. The lights are dim, the meat is placed on the dining board and you are given a rattan mat to put on your lap to eat. You are afraid of pricking yourself. If you say it is a specialty, it is not uniform across the whole store, so you can I spent the same money and watched others eating at the bar and at the table, and even though there was a seat at the bar, I asked if I could change seats but was ignored. When paying the bill, it was the old man again, who directly forced a tip, euphemistically calling it a service fee. When asked if it was a tip, he kept arguing that it was a service fee and not tips. He refused twice before giving up and pretending that he would give it to you this time. . I would like to ask you, from the moment I walked in to the checkout, you were the most enthusiastic when you handed me the bill. I don’t know where the so-called service is. And, old man, you can’t see it because of your poor eyesight and the light is dim. Why are the words on the bill bigger than those on the menu? The color is still light, but you can point to the details in the bill and ask me for the service fee. When you see the money, you will open up, right? In short, if you want to eat the unjust rice, just give it a try, and no one will say anything once you eat it.

We were placed at the back, behind the chimney, which is not very pleasant with a pole in front of your nose with your 2nd... but it still remains my favorite Amsterdam restaurant! Good service and great food, even after all these years, nothing has changed...delicious!

Incredible ribs and very friendly staff

Very good restaurant, ordered two roast pork ribs, the meat was soft and tender. The waiter was very nice. When he saw it was two Asian ladies, he asked if he wanted to drink soda. The service fee is only 5%, which is very nice.

Food served here is amazing, especially the pork ribs and the steaks, atmosphere is good too, not your regular restaurant settings but more of a shared space shared seatings if you don’t mind all that, one downside though, the floor staffs need professional training like service comms skill class, do customers need to be educated by service staffs? Do you have to be rude to your paying masters? Customers are just here to eat your delicious food and pay you money for that, we spent €400 euros in less than 40mins dining in your restaurant, probably we are the ones paid the most in your restaurant, there is no need to be rude to your customers even though there’s mistakes or problems, well in fact you’re working here to solve your customer’s problems not give them more frustrations when they’re just here to have a good time, something this set of service staffs need to learn and take note, please get them in the communication skill class they need it, no doubt best ribs in Amsterdam hence kudos to their kitchen staffs and chefs, but service staffs 👎 please work on that

We went there with a bunch of random people to eat and drink. Asked to be flexible in terms of menu and to make tapas-like snacks from various items. The lady in question agreed and the food was fantastic and also affordable for the location. All in all highly recommended!

One of the best places in Amsterdam to eat meat! There is no wide selection of wine, but the wine list is ok.
