De Gaanderij in Binnenstad-Noord

We started our Beer Walk in Leiden at Restaurant De Gaanderij. We received a friendly welcome, were explained the rules, and then enjoyed a lovely meal on the terrace with a bock beer and a matching appetizer of homemade tartare. The atmosphere was cozy, the service friendly and courteous, and most importantly: the beer was delicious. I can't really comment on the food since we didn't actually eat there. However, I would love to go back and try the rest of the menu!

You get far too little of something that isn't even that tasty for a far too high price. The staff are very friendly, though.

first, i'd like to say that i read a few reviews and actually found one that was exTREMEly dissatisfied with their experience. i have no doubt that they're reflecting what really happened...but i'd also like to say that this seems to be an exception, rather than the usual. i've been there three times in the last 6 weeks or so to have the mussels dinner and it seemed better each time... adequate portion...nice combination of vegetables...bread and great fries(frites)... i really like the interior, as well...i'm not sure how old the building is, but i'd guess at LEAST 100 years... and last, but certainly not least, the woman that's greeted me each time is wonderful...true warmth. and attentive. i'm pretty sure these three visits will not be my last...and i wouldn't hesitate to recommend this restaurant, at LEAST, for the mussels, atmosphere and service...

From the moment we arrived, everything went downhill, and I feel compelled to share this review to save others from the same frustration. We made a reservation, yet nothing prepared us for the chaos that followed. Here’s a breakdown of what went wrong. Poor Service from the Start • As soon as we entered, the waiter approached us immediately—before we had even sat down—and asked what we wanted to drink, without providing any menus or giving us a moment to settle in. • When we requested menus, she only brought the drinks menu, seemingly to pressure us into ordering quickly and make us feel uncomfortable enough to leave. • Only after we placed a drink order did she finally mention the food menu, revealing that there was only one “unique” daily menu available, exclusive to that day. This felt like a deliberate tactic to rush us and limit our choices. Menu Inconsistencies and Deceptive Practices • Don’t bother checking the menu online—it’s completely fake. They claimed to have a “special menu” for the day, presented on a cheap piece of paper with limited options, which bore no resemblance to what was advertised on their website. • As someone who made a reservation, I expected transparency about what to expect. Instead, we were blindsided, and this inconsistency is unacceptable and misleading. Unacceptable Delays and Portion Sizes • We sat down at 19:30, but the starters didn’t arrive until 20:10—a reasonable wait, but then we waited until 21:00 for the main courses, making the service feel like a total mess. • The portions were shockingly small and disappointing, especially for a place recommended for its meat dishes: • The starter was a joke: just one chicken wing per person. • The main course spare ribs were tasty, but the meat was unacceptably tiny, hidden among cheap vegetables and garnishes that seemed like fillers to mask the lack of substance. • Overall, the food quality didn’t justify the hype or the prices, leaving us hungry and dissatisfied. Additional Frustrations: Hygiene and Small Details • The toilets lacked hand soap, which is a basic hygiene issue that shouldn’t happen in any restaurant. • They even took away my napkin without replacing it, adding to the sense of neglect and poor attention to detail. In summary, the combination of rude and rushed service, deceptive menu practices, tiny portions, and basic oversights like missing soap made this an unforgettable experience—for all the wrong reasons. I’m very disappointed, especially since it was a recommendation from a friend. Never again, and I strongly advise against going here. Save your time and money for somewhere that values its customers.

We finally checked out that spot we’ve been walking past for years, and those ribs are insane (so tender and perfectly glazed!). The staff was very warm and attentive, the wine was spot‑on, and the desserts were yummy. Plus, we had a super cozy window table for two, romantic, candlelight and all.

Atmospheric interior, pleasant and correct service, good menu, including vegetarian dishes. We had a pleasant evening, relaxing and catching up with good food. What more could a person want?

Excellent price-quality ratio. We had a drink and enjoyed it for 2 hours. Very friendly staff. As a red wine I would recommend the Italian, but the house wine is also fine. They also let you know if you have any doubts.

Went to dinner with almost 30 friends. Communication with Elles was very pleasant. Just about anything was possible! We all had a really nice evening. The service was great. We look back on it with pleasure. Book us for next year!! ♥️

Een gezellig restaurantje met een Franse / Europees keuken. Vooral bekend om hun spareribs. De beste van Nederland. Op dinsdag hebben ze een geweldig concept. “ aanschuiven bij Rob” een wisselende 3 gangen menu voor 17,50. Vriendelijke bediening en lekker eten.

Nice restaurant in an old Leiden building. Love the atmosphere, Cosy and lively. Staff is kind. Had the unlimited spareribs. These were very tasty. Only thing, which happens more often that ordering seconds takes very long as if to discourage you from ordering more. A pity as you pay extra anyway. Seconds were better than the first, mainly because they are warmer. The bread up front is really nice. Would replace the two that are not tapenade with something better. As desert had Creme brulee, which tasted a bit dry. The kids had sweet bites, 4 of which one thing covered in pink sauce did not taste nice. Suggest to remove it. Overall a fun night. If you are into beer, do not forget the Blijer Blond.

The two of us came for dinner on Tuesday and we were positively surprised by the “join Rob” menu. Also a very good price/quality ratio. Keep it up! Until next time.

Nice place with a cozy terrace. Nice young ladies in the service. Pouring wine could be a bit more generous. Inside it is a bit difficult to get in touch with the staff who are chatting happily with each other behind the bar. The food is reasonable, although the 'fruit de mer' with almost blackened mussels and scant pieces of fried fish is not a culinary tour de force.

This used to be the best spare rib restaurant there is. But unfortunately the quality has deteriorated greatly in the last year, the spare ribs are a lot less juicy and sometimes very dry. On the other hand, on Sundays the spare ribs are unlimited. Only when I was here there were only 3 tables occupied and the rest of the restaurant was empty, not very pleasant. So while it used to be great, you won't see me here anymore.

What a super nice tent this is! The service is super friendly and especially the hostess (at least we think she is the hostess 😜) is super nice. The food is also really fantastic! We had the mixed grill together. Every piece of meat was superb and the side dishes were delicious and attractive. In short: definitely go there and we will definitely do it again!

We had a lovely relaxed dinner on a Tuesday night here. The ladies serving had a kind, warm manner and were very attentive hosts. We enjoyed the €37.50 3 course set price where you can choose any starter, main or desert off the menu (slight extra for some more expensive dishes). I was so full from the first two courses I was able to have an espressso martini as desert which was great. We really loved our starter salads which were very generous and fresh, and the steak was delicious too.

It was fun here! A wide and diverse choice on the menu, both of food and drinks. Very smooth and friendly service. And the dishes were delicious. Only small downside: the seats at the table were relatively tight for us, but as long as you stay seated to enjoy the delicious food and your company, there is nothing to worry about 😊

Small downside, there were drops on the glasses, but the glasses were immediately replaced with apologies for the inconvenience. And that's how it should be! Top restaurant!

It started well, a nice spot upstairs and a nice sandwich beforehand. Then a group of 6 people arrived and we had to move to another smaller table. Okay, that can happen, but then it seemed like we were ignored. We were not asked if we wanted anything to drink and we had to wait a very long time for our main course, which was tasty, but what was on the plate was very meager. A portion of truffle fries was forgotten. Finally, it was difficult to get a desert, which was mediocre and also scanty. We won't be eating here again anytime soon.

Onbeperkt spareribs is hier super! Maar dat zou dan ook het enige gerecht zijn waarvoor wij terug komen. We hebben nu meerdere keren hier gegeten en steeds een ander gerecht besteld. De porties van de hoofdgerechten zijn erg klein helaas... Neem bijv de garnalen met asperges: 3 garnalen, 4 kleine asperges en verder is dit aangevuld met wat tomaten, olijven en 2 kleine stukjes brood. Ook hebben wij een keer de zwaardvis genomen. Minimaal stukje zwaardvis en de overige supplementen waren ook niet bepaald voldoende om met een voldaan gevoel het restaurant te verlaten. Nogmaals: onbeperkt spareribs geweldig! Rest... Niet vullend, wel smakelijk

Heerlijk gegeten, spare ribs zijn altijd fantastisch, saté ook!

Heerlijk gegeten hier, wel een wat kleinere menukaart maar wel verschillende opties. Vlees, vega, vis opties zijn aanwezig. Smaakvolle gerechten. Bediening was niet enorm snel, maar wel vriendelijk. Lekkere keuze in verschillende biertjes.

Een leuk terras (van een restaurant) buiten de grootste drukte van Leiden, mooi naast een kerk; niet zo handig ingedeeld want om vanaf de straat een tafeltje te bereiken moest je heel onhandig omlopen. We hebben hier alleen iets gedronken (za-avond). Aanvankelijk was de bediening vriendelijk van oudere dame; helaas wordt hier dan weer afbreuk aan gedaan door na een kwartiertje meteen te vragen 'of ze nog iets voor ons konden betekenen' (lees: willen jullie nog iets bestellen). Helaas voor hen, dat wilden wij niet ! Het viel ons die avond meer op in Leiden, vroeger was het gezelliger en vrijblijvender in de stad. Het komt de sfeer en aantrekkelijkheid zeker niet ten goede: de klant meer zien als een geldboom dan als iemand die gewoon welkom is. Op den duur zal dit de horeca-lui ook gaan opbreken, zeker weten... (Dom!)

Erg lekker kunnen eten met een grote groep studenten. Het menu bleek wel anders te zijn dan afgesproken, maar was daarom niks minder lekker!

Het eten is behoorlijk de bediening ook gezellige omgeving.

Das Restaurant De Gaanderij gibt es nicht! An der Adresse ist ein anderes Restaurant mit einem anderen Namen, das aber nicht auf Tripadvisor vertreten ist und eine vollkommen andere Küche hat.

Slecht...kregen met 8 personen 2 bakken sla en 1 vis ! Vervolgens 2 schalen met niet gare lasange..

Bediening goed en vriendelijk maar wat er uit de keuken komt is heel matig. Carpaccio smakeloos en uit de vriezer. Entrecote hard, taai en vol met zenen en minimaal gegarneerd. Huiswijn is ok. Doodzonde want de locatie is top.

Eerst onterecht bestempeld als boosdoeners voor iets wat een andere groep had gedaan. Blijkbaar had een groep waar wij niks mee te maken hebben en niet kennen iets gesloopt. Dit werd onterecht afgereageerd op ons door de ober met het zwarte krullenhaar. Hij was daarna ook zonder reden niet vriendelijk richting ons. Het voorgerecht duurde een uur voordat het op tafel was terwijl het 24 koude voorgerechten waren. Het hoofdgerecht duurde nog een uur extra en bij serveren bleken ze 3 gerechten te kort te komen. Toen de andere klaar waren met hun hoofdgerecht kregen de resterende 3 pas hun hoofdgerecht. Dat was erg matig. Normaal een leuk restaurant en vorige keren ging het goed met grotere groepen. Deze keer was dat helaas totaal niet zo. Betekent wel dat we volgende keer een andere tent gaan proberen.

Vriendelijk personeel en top eten! Voor de 2de keer gegeten en de hoge standaard blijft!

Heerlijke spare ribs die zo van het bot vallen. Helaas binnenvlies niet verwijderd. Dat kan echt niet als restaurant en zeker niet voor die prijs. Patat heerlijk. Slaatje zou een dressing bij mogen. Ik als hobbykok haal dat zelfs er af. Laat staan als ik mensen laat betalen voor mijn eten. Daardoor 3 sterren anders 4. Mooi ouderwets pand met dikke balken aan het plafond. Gebeld voor afhalen. Op afgesproken tijd dus na 20 minuten. Daar aangekomen nog half uur moeten wachten op 2 spare ribs menu's. Terwijl bij aankomst gezegd werd nog 2 minuten waarschijnlijk. Was totaal niet druk. Bied dan wat te drinken aan oid. Beetje jammer

Vond het eten wat tegenvallen, service en bediening was prima. Wat wel iets aan gedaan moet worden is de deur. We zaten constant op de tocht omdat mensen die naar buiten gingen de deur niet dicht deden. De tussendeur. Niet alleen wij hadden daar last van. Andere klanten stonden ook steeds op om de deur dicht te doen. In de zomer niet erg maar met kou en regen niet fijn.

Supergezellig in de bovenzaal gegeten en gedronken met 12 personen. We zijn al enkele keren hier geweest. Zegt genoeg.

Heerlijke spareribs. Ter plaatse gegeten. Leuke ambiance in restaurant, goede bediening. Friet viel mee, saus bij de ribs kan beter (denk ik). Kom graag op een zondag terug voor onbeperkt ribs te eten.

Ambiance prima, eten matig. Gedurende het verblijf geen enkele vraag of we nog iets wilde drinken, alles naar wens was, etc. Dit kan ik thuis absoluut beter.

Een heerlijk kerst diner gehad met de hele familie, prima bediening.

Just the building itself in one of the most charming hidden areas of Leiden is worth the visit. They are very friendly and always come to the table with a big smile. Mostly meat dishes on menu — I recommend the spare ribs. Sticky and tasty. It’s a really cute place to go with friends or family relatives visiting you.

Wat een klantgerichtheid hebben wij ervaren afgelopen zondag met 10 vrienden, uit Brummen, hier bij De Gaanderij. Gewoon even theeën met 10 personen, Mees, die ons hielp is een MEES (TER). Wat een voorbeeld voor Horeca Nederland. Aanrader dus. Nam de bestelling op, zonder papier of notities, en serveerde uit precies wat een ieder had besteld. Ja, het bestaat nog. Gaan we nog meer van horen, die Mees.

Ci siamo fermati per cenare in 4, eravamo gli unici turisti e hanno fatto di tutto per farci sentire a casa, personale gentilissimo, servizio ottimo e attento. Abbiamo ordinato il piatto del giorno di pesce e un piatto vegetariano, entrambi erano speciali ma ho preferito in particolare il piatto vegetariano, molto ricercato con sapori inaspettati e particolari. L’ambiente è accogliente e curato. Super consigliato
