De Gulle Smid in Wijk 01 Land

Expected more for the price! We had to wait far too long to order more fries and salad; by then our food was completely gone! The food itself was well-seasoned, though!

It's been a while since we last ate here. It was excellent! The kitchen has clearly improved immensely. The weather was beautiful, and the terrace, situated in the most beautiful spot in Winterswijk, was packed. We had to wait a bit for our order, but it was more than worth it. De Gulle Smid more than lived up to its promise. Highly recommended!

De Gulle Smid is situated in a fairytale-like location, which is a plus point for that alone. The service is prompt, somewhat businesslike but certainly not unfriendly. We started with crusty bread, aioli, oil, and herb butter. Tasty and a good portion. The coq au vin fell off the bone and the sauce was rich in flavor and nice and firm. The salad with brie was also amazing. Well-filled with brie, nuts, and other flavors. The dessert was a rum raisin cake. Warm with whipped cream and Malaga ice cream. Delicious. The only downside was that the toilet didn't smell nice. Not from recent users, let's just say. To clarify, it was certainly well-maintained because it wasn't dirty, though a bit outdated. Food, top-notch, 5 stars. Service due to the toilets, 4 stars. Atmosphere, 3 stars, because only with a view of the watermill do you get 5 stars; all other places are 3 stars.

A very nice place where the simple dishes are fine. However, my fish trio was very sad and lay on a bed of red lentils. They were very mealy. So it all sounded good, but it didn't taste good. The place is very nice. Right next to a watermill.

Location perfect. The food isn't getting any better. We had satay. It looked more like boiled than fried. The fries were tasty.

The restaurant is situated in a beautiful location, but the air is full of dust due to the adjacent parking lot. The staff is friendly, but the food is very disappointing. The bread is tasteless and far too much is served: no fewer than nine pieces per portion. The pesto consists almost entirely of oil, and the herb butter is nothing more than melted butter with some herbs. The omelet contains far too much oil. The tiramisu consists of ladyfingers soaked in a little limoncello syrup, topped with a generous dollop of whipped cream. I understand that it can be difficult to find a good chef, but you cannot make a fool of your customers, especially not for this high price.

We cycled past this restaurant, actually on our way to the old, renovated watermill "de Olliemölle," which is directly opposite. We didn't know that until then. It's a really beautiful spot: a millpond, lovely gardens, old trees – idyllic! It was very warm, the sun was blazing, but unfortunately, there wasn't a free table on the terrace that was in the shade. Of course, we didn't want to sit inside in that weather, so no coffee, cake, or beer there, but we did take some photos of the mill and its surroundings.

Nice place to rest and have lunch during a bike ride

We went here for lunch and the food here was decent. The chicken wrap did get cold really quickly tho. Which wasn't that great. The area is really nice tho! Which makes the experience a lot better.

Had a nice dinner. Unfortunately, due to mistakes, there were very long waits between courses twice.

A beautiful location. We do not recommend the food. Tasteless and prepared without love. A roast that had no flavor and was served colorless, with a sticker indicating the expiration date still in the sauce. Cod very dry and tasteless. A pity.

A wonderful place to stop for refreshments during bike tours around Winterswijk.

A nice place to eat and, fortunately, not too busy. The atmosphere inside is pleasant and neat. In terms of value for money, this place is fine; we spent €60 per person for a complete three-course dinner, and that included drinks. The menu offers a good selection. The food itself: Starter: The hazelnut and mushroom pâté tasted very good. Main course: The venison steak (photo 1000065102.jpg) was also well prepared. Side dishes: They serve very generous portions, with plenty of fries and potatoes on the side. You certainly won't go home hungry here. Dessert: The dessert was okay, but honestly, not very special compared to the rest of the meal. All in all, a great experience and highly recommended if you are in the Winterswijk area.

We spent our (late) lunch break here and had a relaxing stay in a pleasant atmosphere. Small menu, lunch served until 4 pm, dinner from 5 pm. We'd gladly come again on our next trip.

We waited over an hour for our main course. Very little staff comes by. 6 different dishes but almost nothing was impressive. Absolutely not suitable for vegans. They charge a lot of money for something I wouldn't put on the table at home myself. Beautiful location for walking and having a drink, but I wouldn't stay for dinner here.

The food was delicious and good. I would go back there in a heartbeat.

If you have high expectations or a big appetite, don't go there. The bar area is outdated and unattractive. Thankfully, there are alternatives in Winterswijk. There was an 80-minute wait for the schnitzel.

Lovely terrace and also a bit of nostalgia for me, because I was already able to row regularly at so-called Den Helder back in the 60s. Furthermore, De Gulle Smid offers excellent lunch in a beautiful location.

Very beautiful terrace, situated by a small river near a watermill. It would have been absolutely perfect with a dark beer on the menu as well, but unfortunately, mostly IPAs and non-perfect...

Beautifully situated address for lunch and dinner. Visited 3 times last week, partly due to the good experiences from last year. We had lunch once and dinner twice. The lunch experience was fine again, but the dinners we enjoyed were not top-notch. The asparagus soup was fine, but the asparagus with the salmon was cooked for far too long, so it was already mushy. The Dame Blanche dessert was fine. Today was a less good experience; as a starter, we had bread with 3 small bowls—no tapenade or pesto and herb butter, but rock-hard butter with chives, mayonnaise, and a small bowl of indefinable juice. For the main course, we chose a Trio of fish. A plate full of tasteless lentils with 3 small pieces of fish tasting the same. Definitely not recommended. A shame; we were used to better and more flavorful food last season.

A very nice, small restaurant with very friendly and attentive service; you can enjoy the sun on the terrace.

Had lunch with the cycling club, a group of about 15 people. The food was good and served promptly. The service was friendly and attentive... we'll be back, especially because of the beautiful surroundings of Winterswijk.

Dear Owner, On Friday, October 10th, five of us (away for the weekend) dined at your restaurant around 6:00 PM. I just called you regarding two men who became ill from your schnitzel. The rest had meat, and that was fine. Your response during the phone call was... there is a flu going around, and a story about purchasing, etc., etc. Instead of responding adequately, you resorted to defense. I am not at all one for posting reviews, but the telephone conversation I had with you has led to me posting this review. An addition will follow, specifically aimed at your inability to resolve the issue. The service was fine.

An excellent restaurant on the outskirts of Winterswijk, set in a beautiful park. The dining room is lovely with a lovely view of the surrounding countryside. It couldn't be better. The staff is friendly and welcoming to every guest. There's also a small carom billiards table available. However, the prices for food and drinks are outrageous – it's simply unbelievable!

What a beautiful location and nicely decorated. We dined here with a large group over the weekend and discussed the menu (read: everyone was the same) with the chef beforehand. Unfortunately, things went wrong. Main courses were served without the side dishes. Later, a few bowls of fries and salad arrived for over 18 people, even though some had already finished their main courses. In fact, fifteen minutes after everyone had finished, a few more side dishes arrived. And then the main course was still lukewarm. We had made it so easy for the chef, and still, things went wrong. If you can't handle large groups on a weekend, just tell them in advance. Now we're paying a fortune and leaving with a less than perfect feeling. I won't be coming back here anytime soon.

The food is not what you would expect given this ambiance. The menu is not exciting (we went here on a whim and hadn't looked into the menu beforehand). The starter wasn't bad in itself. The salmon tartare was tasty, but there was only a trace of the wasabi crumbs. The main course was mixed. The sole was fine, but the potatoes served with it were blandly seasoned and dry on the inside. The salad contained canned corn kernels and an unappetizing, sour soy dressing. The lettuce was also a bit wilted. The ribeye tasted like a frying pan in a few places, but was otherwise fine overall. The gin and tonic contained very little gin and was served with strawberries. The presentation is also just barely not quite right. Mayonnaise in a paper container, paper napkins, red wine served in a white wine glass. A waitress who came to ask three times during the starter and main course if everything was to our liking eventually became a bit annoying. After all, we are there to eat, not to please the chef. The prices are comparable to the better restaurants in the area. You really should expect more here than this pub-style quality. We spent well over a hundred euros for 2 people (including drinks), whereas for this quality, you should expect to pay closer to €40 per person. It is a beautiful restaurant in a beautiful location. The restrooms are new, modern, and clean. The restaurant is located in the conservatory, a lovely spot, but unfortunately finished with some plastic plants. All in all, unfortunately, not worth recommending.

Delicious food, very sweet people. I don't recognize myself at all in some of the negative reviews I've seen here. I've been several times now and had a really fun evening every time. Highly recommended!

Lovely spot to sit, friendly staff & good food!

What a terrible place. I'm blind and accompanied by a sweet, well-behaved, and extremely well-trained guide dog. I called ahead to make a reservation and clearly indicated that I was bringing my guide dog. When I arrived at the restaurant, I wasn't allowed to sit with the other guests and had to sit in a back corner. Unfortunately, unfortunately, I had imagined this evening very differently and had hoped for a very pleasant evening with my wife, enjoying a delicious, extensive meal here. The website states that De Gulle Smid wants to make your visit an experience, but unfortunately, this turned out to be different, and our evening was completely ruined by all this! Dear people of De Gulle Smid, I specifically indicated in advance when making my reservation that I would be bringing a guide dog. Have some balls and tell me honestly, if I call ahead, you and your dog are not welcome in the entire restaurant, only in a back corner. I would have expected much more professionalism from a restaurant like yours!

Beautiful location, but the lunch wasn't great. The lettuce was definitely not fresh, brown, and limp. I mentioned it to the waitress and later to the cashier, but all I heard was "okay," no apology or anything.

My husband and I had a ham and cheese sandwich. It was delicious, homemade smoked ham and delicious cheese on two brown bread rolls. We could have finished it all, but it was very tasty. Beautiful surroundings, clean toilets, and a nice rest. It's very beautiful there in the Winterswijk area.

We ate here tonight on August 26, 2025. It's a beautiful spot near the renowned watermills. The terrace is large and the interior is lovely. A warm welcome and the service is fast and very friendly. The ribeye and salmon were excellent. They also came with a side dish of baby potatoes and fries, which could be ordered again for free if desired. It was striking that the entire terrace was non-smoking. It wasn't a smoke-free terrace, but you had to ask for an ashtray. Very convenient for non-smokers or people with lung problems. Friends of ours are going on vacation in the area soon, and we will recommend De Gulle Smid to them.

We've never had such a fantastic grilled cheese sandwich! It sounds like a simple meal, but here it's phenomenally generously topped with ham. A huge 🔟!

Everything was fine, despite the not too extensive menu

As part of our Happen en Trappen (Happiness and Trappen) event, we had soup and the main course here. The soup was excellent. We found the main course, drunken chicken and pork tenderloin, mediocre. The atmosphere was great, with friendly, helpful service. And the beautiful weather was fantastic. A stunning setting with a watermill added to the ambiance. Beautiful.

Very busy (but then again, Sunday during the holidays). There was also a wedding, so the staff was on edge, and it was noticeable. Fortunately, the owner/manager saved the day by responding promptly to questions. The location is great. I like the food.

We stopped here the day before yesterday during our e-chopper tour. We liked it so much that we wanted to have lunch there the next day with 14 people. Once we arrived, we were allowed to put three tables together, no problem. Afterward, we looked at what we wanted to order, but when the waiter came, we were told we couldn't order from the lunch menu on the table, but from a separate menu that had almost nothing on it. We asked if we couldn't order from the other menu, but that wasn't allowed. We could all order a toasted sandwich, though. A bit of a shame. The reason was that the kitchen would have had to prepare too many different orders otherwise. But if we had sat separately, each family would have been allowed to order from the regular menu. We said we'd do that, but that wasn't allowed anymore. The 14 of us then went somewhere else for lunch, where we were allowed to order whatever we wanted. We were really looking forward to it, but unfortunately, it wasn't. Personally, I think it's a shame you treat your customers this way. We won't be eating here anymore, even though the seating is really nice.

Very tasty food and very friendly staff

We made a reservation at six o'clock for nine people, including four young children. We received a friendly welcome. We were given a table in the conservatory. The acoustics there were terrible. It was so noisy. Four people wanted an appetizer, which was fine. After that, nothing. We were constantly asked if we wanted anything else to drink. Our table was covered with bottles and glasses. No one cleared the table. At 7 o'clock, still no main course. After asking if they had forgotten us, we were told that if you have an appetizer, you'll be at the back of the line with the main course. Very strange. The children were also getting restless. So, everyone who came in was helped first. But you don't just leave with children. That's not really an option. After two and a half hours, we finally got our food. The ribeye was cold, the salmon was lukewarm, the cutlet was just breaded with a wafer-thin piece of meat in between. The children's croquettes were lukewarm. Absolutely terrible. The price for this food was far too high. The waitress also didn't look at us when taking our orders. They were clearly annoyed that we had to ask for our order multiple times. We will never go back and advise everyone against dining here. The surroundings outside the restaurant are beautiful. Inside, the ambiance and acoustics could definitely use some attention.

The outdoor area is shabby, worn, and uninviting. The staff couldn't handle the crowds and were extremely unfriendly. The food wasn't great. The business has lost its passion (anymore).

We've been here once, so we have limited experience. I ate a ribeye that was small and fatty. That was a big disappointment. The salad with chicken was very tasty. The service was not special. They were more occupied with each other than with the guests. The location is nice and there is a lot of space to sit outside. The prices are a bit high in relation to the quality.

They don't sell what's on the menu. Order a hamburger. Then get something made from soy with herbs. Then the chef insists it's beef. Nonsense because I could spread it out to a pancake. No animal tissue to be found. Do charge the full price. Have no idea what they sell. Never go there.

The generous Smid is situated in a beautiful location at the watermill. A nice meeting point for hikers, cyclists and families. Plenty of space. We ordered a three-course surprise menu. A glass of delicious white chardonnay and a Texel beer as a starter. The start of the menu was a fresh salmon tartare. Nothing to complain about. Then asparagus (well cooked) with a hollandaise sauce and a fried sea bass fillet. Garnish: delicious fries and a salad. Dessert of ice cream, caramel sauce and a crunch of cookies at the bottom. All delicious dishes. Service was excellent. Definitely worth repeating. Thanks!

Idyllic place where we don't want to come back. Organization and welcome below par. Ice with water crystals, presented without inspiration. Too bad, for the same money this could have been very different.

Het restaurant is werkelijk mooi gelegen, leuk klein speeltuintje voor kinderen, eerder daar een goede lunch genoten, maar een hele slechte ervaring met het diner. De haloumie-quiche en broccoli soep waren prima, maar de kabeljauw wang-tartaar beslist af te raden! De vervangende soep pompoen/kokossoep met garnalen rechtstreeks uit een pakje, het vistrio besteld door 3 personen bijzonder slecht, 2 grote garnalen rechtstreeks uit de diepvries daarbij een ongedefinieerd stukje draderige witvis (kabeljauw ?) onooglijk stukje grijze zalm en dat alles geserveerd op zwarte! pasta, hoe verzint de kok het. Sommige gerechten zagen er ook leuk uit maar de balans in gerechten was totaal afwezig. Als excuus een kopje koffie/thee buiten de rekening, het was een drukke dag, te kort personeel in de keuken, maar neem dan geen reservering voor 10 personen aan! Kortom doe hier iets mee.

Ambiance, service and food were very good. We would recommend. Unfortunately it was still very cold outside. But I can well imagine that it would be even better in summer.

Shame. The soup was lukewarm and the wrap with goat cheese and beetroot did not contain any beetroot. The beetroot was brought separately after we had made a comment about it and the soup was also served hot later.

Nice terrace, but what a disappointment. We had lunch with a brown roll with brie, pear, honey and walnut. The sandwich was heart, almost impossible to cut. The brie was very poor. On 1 sandwich was missing the pear on the other 1 super thin slice of pear. The honey was missing on 1. No walnut on either. Complaint, I received the response..... We will pass it on to the chef. Embarrassing.

Nice location. We couldn't order a hot meal around 16:15 had to wait until 17:00 because of the staff break Oh well. Then the toilets what a filthy mess. Trash cans were overflowing. Staff stands in front of the entrance to smoke. It can't get any crazier.

01.03.25 Delicious dinner with the four of us. Friendly welcome, cozy restaurant with sufficient space between the tables. Restaurant is in a beautiful location outside Winterswijk. Delicious dishes including Beef carpaccio, pumpkin-coconut soup as starters and Ribeye, filet mignon and a vegetarian dish Peanut egg burger. Side dishes of potatoes, fries and salad which were replenished when they were gone.

The food was good, the service attentive and friendly.

February 8, 2025 ate at this top location. Young ambitious chef and very friendly ladies in the service. Delicious three course menu. Greet fish -I meat. What a wonderful experience. Our Labrador Jari was also with us and there was a lot of loving attention for him too. The Achterhoek at its very best. The soup was too salty and the Wellington had a large bite of puff pastry with an unappetizing sweet sauce. So nothing special and just as expensive as my table companion's pork tenderloin. Won't be back

In the dark, with the (Christmas) lights on, the outside looks beautiful! Very atmospheric. It also looked nice and attractive inside. We had a delicious meal, 2x game menu. Service was fine. Too bad they asked us far too often if we wanted something to drink.

Very cozy rustic restaurant with a large beer garden. The large water mill gives the whole thing a glimpse into the past.

I ate a delicious apple pie here, but I said I didn't want whipped cream, they still did that and I had to pay extra for that. but it is very beautiful here!
