A beautiful location on the waterfront near an old watermill. Delicious food!

The outdoor area is shabby, worn, and uninviting. The staff couldn't handle the crowds and were extremely unfriendly. The food wasn't great. The business has lost its passion (anymore).

We've been here once, so we have limited experience. I ate a ribeye that was small and fatty. That was a big disappointment. The salad with chicken was very tasty. The service was not special. They were more occupied with each other than with the guests. The location is nice and there is a lot of space to sit outside. The prices are a bit high in relation to the quality.

They don't sell what's on the menu. Order a hamburger. Then get something made from soy with herbs. Then the chef insists it's beef. Nonsense because I could spread it out to a pancake. No animal tissue to be found. Do charge the full price. Have no idea what they sell. Never go there.

5 euros for a dry piece of hazelnut pastry, tasting like factory pastry defrosted from the freezer........shame on you!!!

The generous Smid is situated in a beautiful location at the watermill. A nice meeting point for hikers, cyclists and families. Plenty of space. We ordered a three-course surprise menu. A glass of delicious white chardonnay and a Texel beer as a starter. The start of the menu was a fresh salmon tartare. Nothing to complain about. Then asparagus (well cooked) with a hollandaise sauce and a fried sea bass fillet. Garnish: delicious fries and a salad. Dessert of ice cream, caramel sauce and a crunch of cookies at the bottom. All delicious dishes. Service was excellent. Definitely worth repeating. Thanks!

Lovely spot, superbly situated in the beautiful countryside of Winterswijk.

Idyllic place where we don't want to come back. Organization and welcome below par. Ice with water crystals, presented without inspiration. Too bad, for the same money this could have been very different.

Great restaurant, good beer and a nice beer garden. Definitely worth a visit and a very special place at the mill.

Ambiance, service and food were very good. We would recommend. Unfortunately it was still very cold outside. But I can well imagine that it would be even better in summer.

Shame. The soup was lukewarm and the wrap with goat cheese and beetroot did not contain any beetroot. The beetroot was brought separately after we had made a comment about it and the soup was also served hot later.

Nice terrace, but what a disappointment. We had lunch with a brown roll with brie, pear, honey and walnut. The sandwich was heart, almost impossible to cut. The brie was very poor. On 1 sandwich was missing the pear on the other 1 super thin slice of pear. The honey was missing on 1. No walnut on either. Complaint, I received the response..... We will pass it on to the chef. Embarrassing.

A super cozy restaurant where we had a delicious meal. The staff was very friendly and the food was very tasty. Too bad for us that it was so far away, but if I'm in the area I will definitely come back!

Nice location. We couldn't order a hot meal around 16:15 had to wait until 17:00 because of the staff break Oh well. Then the toilets what a filthy mess. Trash cans were overflowing. Staff stands in front of the entrance to smoke. It can't get any crazier.

01.03.25 Delicious dinner with the four of us. Friendly welcome, cozy restaurant with sufficient space between the tables. Restaurant is in a beautiful location outside Winterswijk. Delicious dishes including Beef carpaccio, pumpkin-coconut soup as starters and Ribeye, filet mignon and a vegetarian dish Peanut egg burger. Side dishes of potatoes, fries and salad which were replenished when they were gone.

The food was good, the service attentive and friendly.

February 8, 2025 ate at this top location. Young ambitious chef and very friendly ladies in the service. Delicious three course menu. Greet fish -I meat. What a wonderful experience. Our Labrador Jari was also with us and there was a lot of loving attention for him too. The Achterhoek at its very best. The soup was too salty and the Wellington had a large bite of puff pastry with an unappetizing sweet sauce. So nothing special and just as expensive as my table companion's pork tenderloin. Won't be back

In the dark, with the (Christmas) lights on, the outside looks beautiful! Very atmospheric. It also looked nice and attractive inside. We had a delicious meal, 2x game menu. Service was fine. Too bad they asked us far too often if we wanted something to drink.

I ate a delicious apple pie here, but I said I didn't want whipped cream, they still did that and I had to pay extra for that. but it is very beautiful here!

Ate here on September 12, 2024. Beautiful location in the green near a watermill. Friendly welcome and a place in the conservatory. We chose the carpaccio as starter. A portion for 2 was no problem. As a main course, the pork tenderloin, 1 with pepper sauce and the other with mushroom sauce. Accompanied with fries, fried potatoes and salad. Nothing to complain about. Paid for the above 1 sangria, glass of wine, rader and 1 specialty beer. €78.25. Highly recommended.

Beautiful location where you can have a delicious lunch or hot meal. When the weather is nice, a nice terrace is ready for you with friendly and competent service. For lunch I would like to recommend a sandwich, you really don't know what you are eating! We would like to come back here for a hot meal on our next visit to Winterswijk

The first date arranged at Gulle Smid. I asked in advance if it was possible to make the table romantic. Upon arrival, the table was covered with candles and hearts. The dishes were also delicious and looked excellent. In the end, the date was so good that a second date is planned.

Had to wait a long time before our order was taken. Service passed by our table several times.

Very nice place, invites you to linger. The food is very tasty, but feels like it's not enough for the price. You actually won't get full. At least not us. But everyone has their own preference. Therefore only four stars overall.

It's been a while since we ate here. It was excellent! The kitchen has clearly improved by leaps and bounds again. The weather was beautiful, the terrace in the most beautiful spot in Winterswijk was completely filled. We had to wait a while for our order, but it was more than worth it. De Gulle Smid has more than made the promise worth it. Absolutely recommended!

Waited almost an hour for the food. Only after a complaint that we would get the food in 5 minutes, but it still took longer than 10 minutes. The chicken leg was not cooked through. We gave it back. By the way: The Texels 0.5 liter costs €8.40. No beer prices on the menu. It's actually a shame.

The waitresses are friendly but they have a problem in the kitchen: we ordered, they brought us the drink, and after 50 minutes they didn't bring us the food. The right food. The place, beautiful. Go there if you don't mind drinking two snacks while waiting for your food…

Prachtige lokatie. Goed eten. Bij het verassing menu werd niet gevraagd hoe we het vlees wilden. Daardoor was de picaña doorbakken. Heel erg jammer. Bediening te nonchalant. Het mist net dat beetje klasse. Ze vallen midden in een gesprek zonder even te kijken of het wel past.

Make sure you make a reservation on busy summer days when the weather is nice. Lots of 'biting and kicking' guests and therefore little room for spontaneous arrivals. I didn't think the price/quality of the menu and the food was up to par. It still feels like you can cook just as good or better at home for that amount of money, especially in combination with the ambiance of having to sit at the back/side because the front terrace is full in combination with the price. I didn't think the 'drunk chicken' was special in terms of taste and plate presentation. The standard salad was quite monotonous, with few additions and especially only 1 type of lettuce with dressing. The fries that were served were crispy, but you can expect that when the place is full; then the fat is hot. I would advise the owner to simply say no if the terrace is full and not to add any party tents. Price and experience become further apart in this setup, and I heard several guests complain about this. I found the staff polite and nice. I am certainly convinced of the good intentions of the owner, but it could be detrimental in the long term. I would recommend the Gulle Smid if you can make a reservation and you don't necessarily want to eat something special but really want to eat at this location and sit on the terrace. I think that price and quality will then come closer to each other.

Despite reporting an allergy, we still received peppers on the plate. My party had already finished the main course before I received my dish without peppers. After sitting for 2 hours we only had a starter. Waiting isn't bad, but it took a very long time. The food was delicious.

This restaurant is in a beautiful location at the Olliemölle, friendly staff and quick service. Good food, delicious roasted pepper tomato soup, but the vegetarian peanut burger was a bit tasteless. We'll just keep that as a small mistake on the chef's part...

Had something to eat on the terrace in a relaxed atmosphere. Lunch dishes such as croquettes and omelette are available. Tomato soup was tasteless, the melting was very good. Absolute recommendation: the ice cream scoops, you'll come back for them. After 5 p.m. more choice on the card/menu. The Dog is not welcome in the atmospheric part, only at the bar and .. and outside, too bad. We went back a year later and the ice cream is still incredibly delicious.

We came here twice. Once for lunch, once for dinner and both times we weren't 100% satisfied with the food. But that may also be because we don't really like Dutch cuisine. The atmosphere in and around the restaurant, however, is really nice and the staff is friendly. If we were in the area again, we would definitely come here again, but we would choose different dishes.

Went out for dinner yesterday and we were positively surprised. Both starter and main course were well received. Management was well thought out and was able to explain everything in detail. The service also remained very professional during difficult situations. We will definitely come back!

Had dinner here today. It wasn't too busy on a Tuesday evening. The place here is really beautiful, wonderfully quiet, beautiful stream and water mill, really beautifully situated. The food had its own touch and was very tasty. But sharing a small bowl of vegetables and potatoes with 4 adult men, well. Everyone at the table could have eaten the entire bowls. Furthermore, ordering immediately, waiting more than half an hour for a starter (without previous information) and more than an hour for a main course, is too much. Furthermore, the desert menu was disappointing. I would have liked to see something more Achterhoek, such as a Brômmels cheese board or another Achterhoek dessert. This is about the easiest restaurant to get 5 stars. All the ingredients are there to be beautiful. A story, a small adjustment to the menu, a few finishing touches in the service and some more uniqueness and you have a perfect formula.

In a fantastic location, in the middle of greenery, we enjoyed a delicious meal and matching wine on the terrace of the Gulle Smid this first summer evening. The pleasant and smooth service provided the complete picture! We will be back soon!!

We received good and clear help for allergens such as gluten for one of the guests. However, all the food was tasteless and missing items that were on the menu. We also received different beer than ordered. The trio of fish and the other drinks were tasty. In short, it's a nice place for a drink, but the food is definitely not worth the money.

A late lunch in beautiful surroundings, even with pouring rain. The sound of the weir in the stream. The watermill and the buildings around it. Fairytale! Good terrace with large umbrellas (also called parasols). Smooth service and friendly too. Reasonable prices and food on the table quickly. Parking a few dozen meters after the restaurant. Well remembered for a walk or a bike ride.

Subterranean food, a chicken leg with some canned vegetables and a handful of fried potatoes for €21. And a wheat that wasn't wheat for €8.40?? 👎👎It's a joke, I'd rather stay at home.

I think the restaurant put up a sign saying: we serve the best and tastiest sandwich in the Netherlands here. I have rarely had them so tasty. Returned two days later for a late machiato latte and a cappuccino with half a waffle each (seniors, right?) Each with a separate bowl with cherries and whipped cream on top. What a service! So enjoy. This restaurant also has a beautiful setting and friendly staff. What more could a customer want...

Beautiful atmospheric location near a watermill in the green (forest). Nice staff who do their absolute best. The cuisine is not special, all dishes are flat and do not excel in surprising flavors. The point of attention is the waiting time between the dishes (very long) and a small tip if you serve entrecote in the surprise menu, ask how you want it cooked, in my case I did not opt ​​for well done and therefore a bit tough. The environment makes up for a lot, so to speak 😉

Liefdeloos eten. Voor Moederdag gingen we uit eten bij de Gulle Smid. We kozen voor het verrassingsmenu. Een grote fout! Het voorgerecht grof gesneden rode biet met een mayonaise dressing en wat ingedroogde tuinkers. Het hoofdgerecht een lauwe lap rundvlees met een smakeloze jus die moest doorgaan voor de Ribeye. Het dessert gelukkig vanille ijs in koffie. Jong personeel, veelal attent, dat weinig kon met onze klachten.

Ate and drank. First a bitter garnish (brought cold) that was replaced by a warm one👍. Then ate. Schnitzel fried (shame) fries, potatoes, vegetables. Fine but not special. This place relies on its beautiful location. Can the quality of food be improved? The service staff is flexible and good.

This really is a great location! A beautiful terrace overlooking the slinge lined with beautiful trees that reflect in the water. Located at the Olliemölle watermill, a beautiful old authentic building! We had lunch here and it was fine! The dinner we enjoyed the next day was also really great! (drowned chicken, I can recommend it to everyone) The service was smooth and very friendly, in short, we will definitely come back here, even though we come from Friesland!

Am 1. Mai bei wunderschönen Wetter sind wir mit einigen Freunden im Restaurant gewesen. Das Essen war gut , der Service nennt und zuvorkommend, leider hat sich das Essen nach Bestellung doch arg lang hingezogen.

Wat een heerlijk eten hier! Supergoed verzorgd diner, geweldig leuke bediening en een prachtige omgeving. We zijn hier 2x geweest in 1 week.

The asparagus soup was a bit thin and had no pieces of asparagus. The main meal of sole was good, as was the main salad. Well stocked with tasty fries, delicious fried potatoes and a large green salad.
