Douwe Egberts Café in Centrum

First visit. 2 coffees for 9 euros that were made and served at the counter completely lovelessly. The spoon was thrown next to the cup, no saucer, no cookie with it. I had to ask for it myself. You don't expect that in a DE coffee shop. This was followed by a visit to the restroom that was at least as disappointing. Not a single toilet paper in the ladies' restroom, just empty rolls on the floor and an overflowing open trash can.

The terrace is nice. Drinks are too pricey for what you get. Get them yourself.

Always liked this place for a coffee with friends. Unfortunately one of the staff members the blond guy with a belt was very rude and unwelcoming. Work in hospitality myself for years, and this is not how the business works:) and to my knowledge the customer is always right not the staff.

Douwe Egberts has always been one of my favorite places and I visit regularly, but the service and quality are increasingly disappointing. In the ladies' restroom, the soap, toilet paper, or hand towels are frequently out of stock. Sometimes the tap doesn't work and we have to wash our hands in the men's restroom. Also, you don't get a glass of water with an espresso. Another time, my cutlery was forgotten. I had to walk all the way downstairs myself to get cutlery and was even given disrespectful looks while doing so. Today, I ordered a pistolet with grilled vegetables, hummus, mixed salad, and cucumber for over €7. I only received a white roll with an extreme amount of hummus and two thin slices of zucchini. The other ingredients were missing. The hummus was everywhere, making my hands, mouth, and clothes dirty, and the roll was barely edible. Very disappointing for a place I normally enjoy visiting. I hope that more attention is paid to the service, hygiene, and quality of the food.

*Latest update (16/5/25)* Tried the Dubai Chocolate Latte, had a good balance of coffee + chocolate. Order this drink only if you have a sweet tooth please. You will need an exra glass of plain water. The chocolate almond tart was very yums! Most of the patrons were seated outside as it was bright and sunny. We enjoyed some airconditioning inside ******************** This is by far my favourite cafe to go to but, the food quality can be inconsistent. Bread for the sandwich can be a bit too dry. Cakes can really be improved and not be improvised to be somewhat "healthier". I get it that eating healthy is the in thing now but at times we do want to have good authentic original tasting cake. Managers and staffs are very helpful and friendly 🫶

The coffee is delicious. But the café is very dirty. The tables and chairs are always dirty, there is dust everywhere, and there are old stains.

A lovely café with a calm, cozy atmosphere—perfect for studying, reading, or getting some work done. And in summer, you have to try the Green Smoothie! Fresh, refreshing, and absolutely delicious. 💚 Highly recommended!

Very disappointing experience. The café looks very unkempt. There is dust everywhere, dead flies and other insects lie on the windowsills, and the lampshades above the tables are completely covered in dust. In my opinion, the tables are also not cleaned often enough. Then there are the toilets; they are downright filthy, and the toilet paper is not refilled often enough, which only makes the impression worse. Additionally, the music was truly unbearable. We sat here for about 2 hours, and during that time, the same song was played no less than 19 times. Very unfortunate, because with more attention to hygiene, cleanliness, and a better music selection, this could be a much more pleasant place. Furthermore, the drinks were not up to par either; I ordered oat milk and paid extra for it, but received cow's milk, which resulted in a stomach ache... I hope that more attention will be paid to this in the future.

Fine, but you always have to wait such an incredibly long time at the checkout here before your order is taken.

Good coffee with treats, but it takes a very long time to receive what you ordered.

Expensive; you have to pay extra for oat milk. It is a nice place to sit, though, and there is a small play area for children.

The place is fine for working. However, I ordered a matcha, and it was the worst I've ever tasted. It was far too sweet; my stomach hurt all afternoon. When I tried to exchange my drink for another (even one that was cheaper), I was told, "No, you should have asked if it was sweet or not." The service needs improvement: a gesture of goodwill costs you nothing, and it's not the customer's responsibility to know the ingredients of your matcha. It's your responsibility to inform them. This was the first and last time I'll ever come here, and I won't hesitate to advise my friends and family against it.

Very disappointing experience. We had to wait a whopping 30 minutes for our drinks, while other guests who arrived later received their order much earlier. It felt like we had been forgotten and there was little attention from the staff. A little waiting can happen, but this difference in treatment and the long wait were really unpleasant. Hopefully, the service will be improved.

I ordered two iced lattes; they were ready within 10 minutes, and the female employee at the cash register was friendly at the time. However, shortly afterwards, I discovered that the iced latte was lukewarm and contained no ice cubes. At the cash register, I politely and calmly asked a male employee if ice cubes could be added and discussed the situation further. I received no apology or helpfulness in response. The employee was irritated that I even asked and said that he wanted to provide other customers with ice cubes and therefore could not give anything away. Given the heat outside, I then asked if I could pay for the ice cubes, but this was not possible either. Customer friendliness was nowhere to be found in this situation. A real shame; I used to enjoy coming to this location.

I’ve been coming here regularly for a number of years now. I work on my studies; it’s a wonderfully quiet spot, and they always have tasty drinks and lunch. The staff is very nice, and students get a discount too! The Dubai iced coffee was really my favorite; I used to get it several times a week. I really hope it comes back again!

It's gone downhill, the toilets were extremely dirty and hadn't been cleaned in ages. The drinks were okay, but nothing special. There are definitely better cafes in town.

I enjoy sitting here with my laptop; it’s perfectly fine to get some work done. Plenty of spots, no one to bother you, great atmosphere. The only downside, though, is the hygiene. The toilets are filthy, and I don't think the doors have ever been cleaned. I do consider that a real problem in a coffee shop like this; after all, you are dealing with food and drinks.

The iced cappuccino is my fave drink here! The place has ample seats and table which makes it a prime spot for a lot of people to chill, hangout, work and relax.

Lately, the branch has been a mess in the evenings. Tables full, floor dirty, lots of young people lying on the couches; unfortunately, it is no longer what it used to be.

Had a lovely lunch here today.. sandwiches and drinks were delicious and fresh.. but ugh, what filthy cups.. there is no hygiene!

To my great surprise, the cappuccino was disappointing. It tastes better almost everywhere else. The chocolate cake, on the other hand, was delicious. But then the place itself: Upon entering around 7:00 PM, there was exactly one table available that didn't have any dirty dishes on it. There were only a handful of customers, so there were plenty of tables available, but all but one of them had not been cleared. We also left our tray on the table because the trolley where you can put your tray with used crockery had run out of space. To put it mildly, it does not make an inviting impression.

The food here is always delicious, and so are the drinks! I come here regularly, so I can say with certainty: They are open from 8 am and stay open until 9 pm, which gives plenty of time to sit quietly and read something. The atmosphere varies a bit depending on the customers present, but it is never anything but cozy here. I think the staff here is amazing; they are always friendly and willing to help. In my opinion, this is the best place for a drink in Arnhem; whether you want an espresso or an iced matcha latte, a breakfast platter or a slice of apple pie, you will find what you want here. There is a possibility to charge your mobile phone, and a toilet accessible by wheelchair via a back entrance.

A great, large café over multiple floors. It’s laptop-friendly, so it’s often quite busy. You can order and pay via QR code at your table, which is very convenient. The staff are very friendly.

If you are willing to STAND in line for twenty minutes to order a cup of coffee and something to eat, then you have come to the right place. You will, however, still have to balance your tray up the stairs yourself.

I've ordered a grilled cheese sandwich here twice. Both were incredibly hard!! It felt like I was eating a brick. The customer service here could be much better (laughing is free). Last time I was there, someone complained about me ordering a children's grilled cheese sandwich. I did this because I have a sensitive stomach. They still made a fuss about it. I usually clean up after myself, but this time I left the tray. I find the way you're treated here incredibly rude.

I was in Arnhem today. What a nightmare! We waited so long to order, and then waited even longer for our order (2 cappuccinos with cookies), over 20 minutes. The tables weren't cleaned.

A very nice place, great Italian coffee and good quality cakes.

Hygiene: 1 star. The rest—service, atmosphere, and service—make up for it somewhat. Therefore, 2 stars. But what a filthy mess. The toilets are beyond words. The floor is the same. Apparently, it's banking on the good name of DE. But if I were DE, I'd go here and have a conversation about the mess and the mess.

Spacious place to do work or get a coffee with friends. American shift/floor manager has a huge attitude though, and feels very unwelcoming in a homestead Dutch Brand. Not willing to speak Dutch either. Coffee is expensive, the quality very poor. Bathrooms often uncleaned and fresh lunch options minimal. Choice of music often chaotic. Place has lots of potential but currently is capped by certain choices for it to be good.

There are relatively few seats here and most seem occupied by people working. Several tables were 'taken' by bags left behind. We went elsewhere after looking around for a table for a good few minutes. It's probably an ok coffee place when its not busy.

A great place to study with delicious coffee and pastries. There's one drawback: the restrooms. They really should be cleaned more often; it wasn't comfortable to be in them. Otherwise, it's a great place! :)

Unfortunately, it's not child-friendly at all when it comes to changing. There's no regular changing area. Instead, there was a changing mat on the dryer in the cleaning room, which is definitely not a pleasant, safe, or hygienic solution. It's a shame, because a simple changing table would have solved this problem much better.

A modern and bright interior with plenty of cozy seating and benches. Many people are working or doing homework on their laptops or phones. Ordering was easy via a QR code at the table, and the order was delivered within 10 minutes.

I find it astonishing that I paid €5.50 for a medium cappuccino and it was served like that. You expect good quality coffee from a coffee shop like Douwe Egberts, with baristas who know their craft. Unfortunately, the milk wasn't properly frothed, the latte art was missing (not necessarily a must, but for a €5.50 coffee...), and the overall quality was very poor. This unfortunately doesn't do justice to a great coffee experience. Very disappointed.

The flat white wasn't as good as the one I drunk in The Hague. A bit weak. Please exchange preparation methods how to make a bit stronger. Atmosphere in Arnhem in the DE was good.

Well, we ordered cheesecake, a brownie, hot chocolate, and a glass of orange juice. At the cash register, we were immediately given our desserts and sent away to wait for our drinks. No trays. We tried to put our plates on an empty tray in the drinks area, but the barista told us it belonged to another customer and didn't offer any alternatives. So we stood there for about five minutes with our plates in our hands. Maybe next time they'll just put the cheesecake directly in our palms? Why not? Let's just order without plates from now on.

What once started as a chic coffee shop is now a glorified dump. Finding a table without trays laden with cups and saucers is harder than finding a Christmas present for your mother-in-law, let alone a clean one. The baking staff is busy watching Bee the Movie, but they don't work very fast here. If you have a stuffy nose, the toilet is recommended; the ammonia fumes that waft towards you will cure all your cold symptoms.

The ginger tea was huge! It came with a delicious gluten-free gingerbread cookie.

Placed an order at the checkout, where you stand waiting an excessively long time before being served. And then have to wait again before they have a tea and a coffee ready. Not recommended.

Today I visited this place with a friend to try their pumpkin spice coffee, and it was a disappointment. The entire pumpkin spice flavor was only present in the top of whipped cream. The worst part was that the cup the coffee was served in was dirty. You can see in the photo that this is an old residue left from previous use. The staff member behind the bar told me: “Yes, some of our old cups are dirty because the dishwasher doesn’t clean them properly.” Friends, this is not okay. If the dishwasher isn’t doing its job, you need to fix it or wash the cups by hand—but absolutely not serve coffee in dirty cups and talk about it as if it’s normal.

Great place for a nice cup of coffee. Unfortunately, they didn't have soy milk, which I really wanted. So I made a different choice.

The coffee is good, but of course it's also Douwe Egberts. It's great that they're open early because that can be a bit of a problem. Service is sometimes okay, sometimes just awful. People just shove your tray down. I tried to get something to eat there last time. Grilled Brie, I was really looking forward to it. What a disappointment. Brie was hard to come by, lots of honey, but definitely not worth the almost €10. The only positive was the tomato jam. That's what earned the one star for the food. The chocolate milk I ordered is, of course, supposed to be served with whipped cream. I love whipped cream. However, this one had so much whipped cream on it... and it wasn't squirted correctly, because you're supposed to squirt the mug shut. But my saucer was already full of whipped cream and chocolate milk, and the cup was completely covered. You'd think before you walk to my table with the tray and see this chocolate tsunami, you'd clean everything up first. Luckily, there was a napkin in the pocket square, otherwise I would have gotten drops all over my clothes. But the order is usually a bit too cutesy, so I'll polish the cutlery first and then put the napkin under my cup. Next time, I'll just stick to drinks. Update: We still come here regularly. Hopefully, it's cleaner behind the bar than here (see photos). Update: 9:00 AM, see last photo.

The drinks are great, but the price/performance ratio is off. €6 for a coffee with syrup is outrageous, and the cake is cut into relatively small pieces and costs almost €5 each. Behind the counter, it's utter chaos and anything but clean. The toilets are also filthy and clearly haven't been checked by staff. In short, never again; there are much better options nearby.

There were four of us. Three of us had coffee, and one had a hot chocolate with cream (warm Chocomel). The coffee tasted okay, but it was overpriced. When I asked if the hot chocolate was freshly made with milk, the server showed me a carton of Chocomel and explained that it was warmed up and served. At a hefty €4.90 (medium size), that's outrageous. We also had a slice of apple pie and a chocolate cake. I had the apple pie, which was definitely not freshly made but from the freezer. I think at these prices, you can expect fresh ingredients. The points are for the location, the atmosphere, and the friendly service.

A pleasant place to work, but it's a real shame that it's open until 10:00 PM and the restroom is already closed at 9:20 PM. Because of this, I unfortunately had to go home and couldn't stay longer working in the cafe. My milk wasn't frothed quite right, resulting in large bubbles and no microfoam. Otherwise, it's a genuinely pleasant place to work! :)

I ordered a latte tiramisu online. Extra large. I didn't check the box for "No whipped cream/other milk/decaf." The latte didn't come with whipped cream or chocolate/cocoa powder.

Nice and quiet, great for working with your laptop. Perfect for editing photos, for example. The Wi-Fi is good enough, and the coffee is, of course, excellent!

A regular spot for the best coffee. The specials are definitely worth trying, but a flat white is also a hit. Lovely terrace and comfortable seating inside. Perfect for laptop users too.

Fresh croissants, tasty ham and cheese, fluffy omelet, and even mini pancakes – everything was delicious and the price is 👍 great. The coffee was good, and the atmosphere super cozy with nice outdoor seating. Fast, friendly service too. Definitely coming back!

I've been there often to study. Today was the third time, despite ordering lactose-free (at an additional cost), I still received lactose. (This is because I have a lactose allergy and intolerance.) This landed me in the hospital. Because I didn't eat (or drink) anything else, I'm certain this time it was the coffee. Such a shame! I wouldn't normally expect that from such a large company, which is why I even doubted myself the first two times.

The place itself is beautiful and spacious, and the staff are friendly, but the café is very poorly run. Half the menu wasn’t available because they had forgotten to add items back after running out of ice(?) the day before. Service was chaotic—we had to go up and down two flights of stairs multiple times because they kept forgetting us. After 30 minutes we finally got our order, but one drink was wrong and they’d forgotten cutlery, so we had to fetch it downstairs ourselves. When we finally settled in to study, staff suddenly told us to move downstairs because they wanted to close the upper floor—this was at 4pm, even though the café stays open until 10pm. Downstairs tables were still full of dirty dishes. When I asked for ours to be cleaned, it was left soaking wet and smelled unpleasant. All this happened on a quiet day when the place was less than half full. A shame, because the space has potential, but the management is seriously lacking.

Delicious coffee. A tip: consider the cleanliness of the place! The windows are so incredibly dirty, they're just disgusting! They're covering the entire countertop with tea towels to minimize cleaning. That's just not acceptable in a restaurant. It's all part of the job!

In itself a nice place for a cup of coffee. Even if you don't like coffee, there are enough alternatives. Nice place and cozy atmosphere. We didn't get much of the service, since we had ordered via the QR code.

The coffee is okay but pricey. I go there every week for appointments with language coach. I was very disappointed by the food. I have ordered pancakes. The portion was ridiculous for the price. 3 super small pancakes with no fruits only one strawberry for around 7.50€. It was not fresh but heated. It was soggy and lukewarm. I would never order food there ever again.

It is a nice café where you can have a nice cup of coffee. I always have the cheesecake; it is delicious. The atmosphere is a bit hectic. There are a lot of people with a laptop. I think the prices are a bit on the high side.

This review has been adjusted. It has become significantly less. Service from left to right and back again. Was almost staring at the place. Cheesecake was old, coffee was okay, but Flatwite should be stronger. Too bad, in my hometown they apparently don't know how to give the right vibe anymore.

First of all the ladies toilet is so very dirty that you get the idea that it hasn't been cleaned for a while yuck And then I take a sandwich with brie costs 9 euros it was just a small sandwich my colleague had a tosti pieces good buy but much bigger the price and the quality are running. The Dubai chocolate drink was a little sweet because of the Pistachio syrup but the Tiramisu was perfect. Loved the vibe and service.

What a crappy tent....absolutely not recommended. Tables full of crockery and if you want to clear away there is nowhere to put it, the cart is packed. A coffee and a Latte machiato are the same according to the staff (huh? Then Espresso and Ristretto are certainly the same) ...... ignorant staff who make it difficult to see if you want to pay in cash. Because when paying in cash, they first have to check whether they can exchange money. Junk behind the counter, toilet not really clean. And there is a thick layer of dust everywhere. Coffee was reasonable, but far too expensive for the experience. Not recommended Well, Douwe Egberts, you are completely missing the point, this is really not a coffee moment (See photo: staff did not know what the Latte or Coffee was wrong. According to them it is both the same, why in different glasses and contents?)
