Eetcafé De Alde Mert in Wijk 11 Venlo-Centrum

We stopped here for a short break on an unexpectedly hot Friday at the end of September. Sitting outside in the shade under the parasols was wonderful – a perfect place to catch our breath with a coffee and cold water. But what really impressed us was the interior: the historic decor exudes incredible charm and coziness. You immediately feel transported back in time. A huge thank you to the extremely friendly staff – they even allowed me to take photos of the fascinating, rustic interior. A truly welcoming establishment with a great atmosphere, which we will definitely return to on our next visit to Venlo! Then we'll also have to check out the menu for something delicious...

We were in Venlo. The restaurant is well located, in the pedestrian zone but with a pleasant atmosphere for conversation. We only ordered drinks; a separate beer menu seems to be a highlight of this restaurant.

Unfortunately, my visit to De Alde Merret, the first time since the takeover by the new owners, was very disappointing. I ordered the chicken satay, but it turned out to be made from chicken thigh and was very greasy. Nowhere on the menu was it stated that it was chicken thigh; for a dish simply described as “chicken satay,” I expect chicken breast. That made the meal quite disappointing. Furthermore, it was served with frozen fries and, unfortunately, a tasteless pickle. When I pointed this out, the staff told me that, in their opinion, the kitchen had done nothing wrong. Eventually, I was offered an ice tea as a consolation, which I appreciated, but unfortunately, that did not change the quality of the food. Hopefully, the new owners will take the feedback to heart, because at this moment, the price-quality ratio was not right for me. No more Alde Merret for me!

Tried it again; the service was friendly, but the food was really substandard. My wife gave the spareribs a 3! I had a satay platter; the meat tasted cheap. The only things that were good were the fries, mayo, and the Punk IPA. We only go here for a drink from now on. But with this review, I hope things get better there. Good luck!!

Tasty food, I liked it and also the beers were good. Unfortunately don’t speak english very well, they have menus in dutch and german. Great service, would come again

Nice place with good staff and service. The new menu is very disappointing, especially the spare ribs and lime cheesecake. Neither is recommended and we even left them untouched. The tournedos was good. We won't be coming back for the food, but we will for a drink.

Some dishes were way below par. Tasteless or inedible. A real shame!!

We sat down at lunchtime. We had coffee. The place was busy, but The staff were attentive and efficient.

Drove to Venlo from our cottage, sat down on the terrace at 12:00 on Sunday. A girl came over to us and didn't know if they had vlaai or decaf. She didn't bring us our drinks and I had to ask for them. There was only one piece left. Scandalous. A tourist spot, and then no vlaai and no competent staff.

Had a delicious meal, good as always. The staff is friendly. Daily menu with seasonal dishes.

Customer service is not good. I was waiting so long for my order. Dutch people were priority even thay came later than me.

The food was really very good, delicious, and served quickly. But the rest of the experience was simply ridiculous. I don't drink the beverages they sell there, so I brought my own tea and politely asked for a glass. They gave me one at first. Later, I wanted another glass, but as soon as the employee saw I had my own tea, he suddenly refused to give me another one. Honestly, that's just petty and completely incomprehensible. If someone has already ordered and paid for food, a glass really shouldn't be a problem. This kind of behavior leaves a very bad impression. The staff was friendly and tried to speak English and German, but this decision makes absolutely no sense. The food was really very good, delicious, and served quickly. But the rest of the experience was simply laughable. ... I drink the drinks that I don't have, so I had my own drink in me in a glass that I drank in a glass. In the beginning I also had a glass. Later, I still have a glass, so I can see my own glass, I have my own glass, I've got my own glass in the sea. The result is that it has become small-scale and totally on-begrijpelijk. When someone else ordered a betaold, a simple glass really caused a problem. Zo'n gedrag laat a bad indruk aft. Het personeel was wel vriendelijk en sampleerde Engels en Germans te speak, maar deze beslissing slaat real nergens op.

Food was great, service was terrible. Unfriendly, dismissive, no welcome. When asked for the wine list, the answer, "We don't have a list. We have two red and three white wines," wasn't enough. Side dishes were carelessly thrown onto the table. Five portions in two small bowls, seemingly randomly placed on the table, were rather confusing. Why couldn't everyone have their own? On the other hand, this kind of thing encourages conversation. 🙂 There was no final question about dessert or digestif. We had to ask for the menu separately, and digestifs weren't listed. Around 9:30, they started wiping down neighboring tables and rearranging chairs. This is completely unacceptable. A couple at another table were also very irritated. As I said, the food itself was very good. I had rabbit stew. But when you have to pay well over €200 and the overall experience is so poor, it can really put you off your food, which is a shame.

Just popped in here with the four of us, what a lovely cafe. The staff were very welcoming and helpful. I had the "wild pasty" special from the lunch menu, which was delicious. The decor is charmingly old-fashioned, and I'm giving it a 4 for the atmosphere. We just walked in when they opened, so there weren't any guests yet, but I definitely think it deserves a 5. It has a great atmosphere!

40.- for 2 cappuccinos, 1 fried egg, and a beef tenderloin meal salad, of which only the tenderloin was edible. Sloppy lettuce and raw mushrooms, with absolutely no imagination to make anything beautiful out of a salad costing 18.50!!!!. I wasn't asked if it was to my liking or if I enjoyed it. Normally I do speak my mind, but I was in shock because of the price tag, so much so that I was still groggy in the head the moment I stood outside. Unfortunately, not recommended.

Delicious food, we really enjoyed the pesto pasta! Plenty of options for vegetarians! We were helped by Jill, a really nice lady! This restaurant is definitely on our list when we're back in Venlo!

We had dinner with the whole family tonight and it was fantastic! The food was delicious. Because we had small children, we asked Jill to speed up the service, and that was no problem. The food was delicious, and Jill's service was also excellent! Highly recommended!

The food wasn't anything special. The cola and sparkling water came in a still glass. So, not a bottle, but the price was reasonable. Lunch was reasonable. A knife didn't cut through the sandwich. A bit of a disappointment.

No drinks menu and the atmosphere is no longer as cozy as it used to be

As a chef, I'm really disappointed with what the people are cooking and frying in the kitchen! The burgers are almost raw and inedible! The salads are okay. The way they're served is also great. When you order something, you don't get it exactly as ordered.

Salad with tenderloin... Well... The tenderloin was tasty, but I have my doubts about raw mushroom slices and raw bean sprouts. Also no bacon bits in the already meager portion of salad. Reported this to the staff but received no feedback at all. So we will skip this next time. Fortunately, there is enough choice in restaurants in Venlo

Ate well, I had the picanha, which was well prepared, only a bit too cooled down when we got it, but that was no disaster as far as I was concerned. Sauce was far from special, fries and vegetables were tasty. There was a lot of serving staff and the service was friendly and smooth, we also sat well in the view. It was pleasantly busy and it is beautifully authentically decorated. All in all a great evening

A very nice, cozy café in the heart of Venlo. We had a lunchtime snack here today, so only small dishes. Each one was really delicious and made with really good ingredients. The service was very friendly, and we felt very comfortable!

Elderly lady service was beyond rude.. everything else was more than ok. But that was unacceptable. Never going back

Very tasty food. Wild in November, deer in pairs. Really great. However, we were only allowed to pay €25 per person with the Venlose Eetbon. We had received a dinner as a gift and unfortunately we had to open our wallets. We didn't know that.

For both my wife and me, some of the food was not warm, after reporting this the only answer was: I will tell the cook. :(

We were driving back from Germany to the ferry at Rotterdam and thought we’d head into Venlo for a spot of lunch. The town is nice enough to stroll around and get parked, and the food at this place was nice. It was busier than we would have expected for a Thursday afternoon - plenty locals in, so they must know something! It’s not a cheap place, but the food and drink were all good, and the staff helpful.

We were looking for a place with a nice atmosphere because we wanted to have a drink with my girlfriend and I wanted to tell her everything about my holiday. We saw people sitting there so we asked if we could have a drink too. The waitress asked, yes, that is possible, they will close in half an hour. Fine. I was looking and I couldn't find my phone anywhere. Then I was shocked and my girlfriend and I also said it to the same employee "Sorry, but I have to find my phone first so unfortunately it ends." Then the employee says to us "Sorry to say it, but that's quite stupid" Excuse me?! I didn't even realize what had been said and my girlfriend was also in shock. We have both worked in the catering industry for several years, so this is really not possible!!! Really, shame on you for treating potential new guests this way!

Bistro-like location with terrace on the Zoepkoel, near the Maaspoort theater. Service is completely ok. Tables clean, chairs comfortable, planters fairly well cared for. Menu offers generous choices. Rain showers on the terrace did not prove to be a nuisance because of the zip-on parasols with intermediate section. Shared payment by three groups went smoothly and smoothly. Price-quality average. Recommended.

The best burger I've had in seven years in the Netherlands. French fries and sauerkraut were also great, they tasted like Polish food 😍 Very nice service, I recommend 😊

dit was een van de beste restaurants in venlo met kwalitatief een zeer goede keuken,...maar er is een nieuwe kok, ...driepvries friet, door en door gebakken vlees enz..ga er niet meer heen...Jammer.

This will be our number 1 stop when we were with the 2 brothers. I have rarely had such good ribs at the unbeatable price of €19 and the kibblings were not to be sneezed at at €16, everything was very fresh and quick.

We zaten op het terras, wilden wat eten maar bleken aan een niet eettafel te zitten. Had makkelijker geweest als ze dit vtv hadden aangegeven. Misschien een bordje op tafel een idee?! 3 euro voor een spa rood vanuit een glas 0,2 Euro gaat nergens meer over. Bediening vriendelijk maar incompetent.

The prawns, spare ribs and accessories (vegetable garnish and fried potato cubes, fries, salad and sauces served separately in bowls) were tasty, large portions and beautifully presented plates. Service was welcoming and very friendly. It was quiet, which surprised us on late evening. The place deserves to be full. The decor is rustic and appropriate for an eatery. Toilets were clean and smelled fresh. We will come back again!

Onvriendelijk en zeker niet gastvrij. Wilde met vrienden wijntje doen en dan hapje eten. Liepen open deur door en werden aangesproken hoe we binnen zijn gekomen. Of we even aan iemand konden gaan vragen of het wijncafe open was???? NEE, was het antwoord en klaar! Dus snel weg en nooit meer terug. Heel erg jammer.

We have been coming here since 1994/'95. Always delicious food. Friendly service, relaxed atmosphere. In addition to the menu, other fun, tasty seasonal dishes are always offered. Even after so many years, we will definitely continue to come.

We felt like having mussels and they were advertised outside so we sat here. But they could only serve it in the evening (don't put that plate outside in the afternoon, I think). So had to choose something else. It turned out to be a bouillabaisse, but then it turns out to be an ordinary fish soup with onions. For 9 euros, and not particularly tasty. Service was friendly, but did not come back with change, it was simply assumed that it was a tip, not fancy.
