Fast service, but the fries weren't that great.

This used to be our undisputed number one for fries. Sometimes we even drove all the way to Venlo just for fries. Unfortunately, they're very pale now and not crispy anymore. But that's exactly what makes good fries: crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. It's a shame; we'll have to look for alternatives.

I was really surprised that a Frikandel special with small fries cost €7.50! And the portion of fries was really quite small! But it was very, very tasty! 😋

Very inattentive and unfriendly staff. We left the snack bar without eating. Never again.

I just read in a review that fish and fries are cooked in the same oil. That explains my family's symptoms: two people with seafood allergies. Shouldn't customers at least be warned about that?

I've rarely eaten anything so bad. The fries stank and were swimming in oil that, by the way, tasted like something from an animal. Then there was the "new" cheese sauce, which tasted like vomit with bits of it. The cheese tasted so old, it must have been in the family for ages. My stomach ache and nausea set in faster than Amazon Prime delivery. And all that for €6.30! McDonald's would have been a better deal. (Attached is a photo of the aforementioned cheese sauce – which we scraped off as best we could to prevent further stomach damage.) Not suitable for vegetarians or vegans, by the way, since even the fries are fried in the same rancid oil they use for fish and other things.

The food was awful. The fries were rancid, tasting like old or spoiled oil. They also tried to cheat us by charging us for two fries instead of one. The tables outside were dirty. We won't be coming back!

Too slow, even though their specialty is usually fries and fish, which should be easy, but the team is too slow.

Unfortunately, we were not satisfied. Old fries were mixed into our portion. A third of it was inedible. Unfortunately, the outdoor area hadn't been properly cleaned and was covered in pigeon droppings (see photos). Never again!

This is our first time here. The fries with special sauce were delicious. However, almost all the tables outside hadn't been wiped down in a while. There were remnants of dried mayo and ketchup. After we asked, they cleaned our table. The interior of the restaurant also seems to have been neglected for some time. Sorry 😕

The food was very fresh and delicious 👍🏻 and still hot! We didn't have to wait long either... and the city was packed. Good value for money. Fries Special, Frikandel Special. We'll be back.

fries are tasty... snacks well I think they're from Germany... frikandel bv isn't a 100 grammer but 80 and chicken frikandel quality....really bad.................but they charge full price... 2.90 frikandel..... too bad this place with its animal fat (or so I think) could easily have been in the top 10 in the Netherlands.. fries definitely still an 8 ...but snacks come on.... too bad because the sauce from De Oliehoorn is choice 1....then surely you should know how it works I'll keep coming..... certainly not for the snacks...... but for the fries

We got two fries with special sauce for €10.80. There are better and cheaper options in the Netherlands. We were disappointed.

The fries are anything but what the shop's motto claims, "the best fries in Venlo." They smell strangely of grease and taste extremely bad! Absolutely not recommended!

April 8, 2026: Whenever we drive to the Netherlands, we always make a stop in Venlo on the way and visit this chip shop. It has indoor and outdoor seating. Self-service. Prices are reasonable. There's a restroom. It was clean. The staff is friendly and efficient. Chips: My wife liked them, I thought they used to be better. It's just a matter of taste. It's always busy, which is probably because it's the first chip shop in the large parking lot and opposite the "Two Brothers" department store.

One star is an exaggeration. We were turned away and given our money back instead of food. Foreigners are clearly not welcome. What a shame!

For years we've been going to Venlo, usually with fries from Koala Express. Unfortunately, we've noticed that the quality has steadily declined. The fries were incredibly greasy, and at the bottom of the bag, there was a lot of burnt or over-fried food. :( After many years, this was our last visit. Sadly, not much is left of what was once a great place. :(

The best fresh fries in Venlo. I thought I'd try them myself. One fries with mayo and a croquette for €7.40... if it's that delicious... What a disappointment. Small bag of fries, some were already finished, and the last one was in the colander. Indeed, all small, hard fries. Such a shame!

It used to taste good, but not anymore. The fish and chips were awful, what a shame. On top of that, the server was incredibly rude. A customer asked for a fork for his wife, and the response was curt: "There's only one fork per fish and chips..." That was the last time!

For me, this is one of the best chip shops in all of Venlo. I've been a customer for about 26 years and it's always been incredibly delicious. The fries are divine, and the currywurst is fantastic too—I even still take the sauce home in bottles. The price is also perfectly reasonable for what you get. I would recommend a visit to everyone. Unfortunately, the frikandel weren't very fresh anymore and were stale. The fries were okay.

Quickly prepared and very tasty

For many years, we've exclusively eaten our fries there when we're in Venlo. Nice, friendly staff and super delicious food. Excellent value for money. I highly recommend it.

The fries were barely cooked. Only minimally salted. Taste-wise, they were a disaster. When fries are soggy and lack bite, something is seriously wrong. At these prices, it's outrageous. Unfortunately, the skilled worker shortage seems to be affecting them too. What a shame. Never again.

Disgusting fries, unseasoned. Even our kids said they didn't taste good. Then they tell you to queue on the right, but they still serve the people on the left. The place just waits.

I've known this place for years, and I think they have the best fries and beef croquettes. I recommend the large special fries (mayo, curry sauce, and onions) with two beef croquettes (I've had many in Holland, but these are truly the best). I'll be happy to come back.

We've been going to Venlo for years and have always ordered fries from Koala. This time we're disappointed; they're much smaller now, and the prices are almost like fish. Two small, one medium, and one large special fries cost €19.50. Also, the employee wanted to give us a medium fries instead of the large ones. The special fries came with mayonnaise, ketchup, and onions, and they gave us a dollop of mayonnaise and a lot of ketchup. Unfortunately, after so many years, this was our last time shopping there.

Unfortunately, the fries tasted very strange—almost as if they had been fried in animal fat—and were also quite dry. The fried fish tasted okay, but unfortunately was extremely greasy and practically swimming in oil. On a positive note, the Coke was well chilled and delicious.

The fries are really, really good, and the service at the counter was consistently friendly and very quick. We sat inside, where it was very clean, with all the tables freshly wiped. We also found the fries in a bag difficult to get; luckily, we each had two and were able to tear one open and spread it out as a base. The sauces were very good, as were the special frikandel and round meat croquette.

Well overall, I would have given 4 and 1/2 stars but sorry I gave one star less for the service. The manager was practically alone serving in the middle of a rush while his second was cleaning the tables outside while there was no one outside and there was a light rain. This help could have made the fries or even put them in the packages or prepared the trays for him... it always saves a little time but if the boss says nothing or doesn't let him do it so help him behind the stove, he shoots himself while he constantly turns away new customers who try to queue. Otherwise, the fish & chips and kibbelings were very good, especially the fries! :) I put a 1/2 star less because the bottle of Chaudfontaine water is €3.20, i.e. the 6 bought for €19.20... well he took some back from me but it's expensive in a chip shop at €3.20 for Chaudfontaine... for that price, the customer deserves the Spa, right? ;) Final verdict, the 4 stars are justified. QED

Everything is great! A MUST when you are in Venlo! Of course there are 100,000 other chip shops in the immediate area, but this is the original! I've never been disappointed! <3

Richly laid plates, nice, open-minded staff

The fries with the different sauces were very tasty. Service quick. Everything great. There is a star deduction for staying in a fast food restaurant. Because it doesn't matter whether you order something to take away or eat in, everything is served in bags of fries, this quickly leads to contamination within the snack bar as one or two fries and sauce quickly fall down. The staff can't keep up with cleaning so quickly. Especially since there are no trays. In terms of taste, however, a clear 5 stars.

Today we ordered a large fries special to eat on site. It's a shame it's only served in bags. Fries were ok.

Wir gehen hier schon seit einigen Jahren essen aber es wird immer teurer. Wir haben heute für 2 Kleine Pommes Spezial, 2 Fleischrollen Spezial und eine Cola 20,30€ bezahlt. Zugegeben, die Sachen sind lecker aber über 20 € für eine Hand voll Fritten und zwei Würstchen ist für mich einfach eine Unverschämtheit. Wir werden dort jetzt nicht mehr hingehen denn irgendwo hört der Spaß auf.

Als wir lasen, dass es hier angeblich die besten Pommes der Stadt gäbe, probierten wir's aus. Und tatsächlich schmeckten die Pommes sehr lecker. Dazu ein ordentlicher Schlag Satésaus, was will man mehr! ;-) Das Ambiente ist außen sehr schön, mitten in der Fußgängerzone. Innen sitzt man "stilecht" eben wie in einem Fastfood-Restaurant oder in einer Imbissbude, was es ja letztlich auch ist. Die Preise empfanden wir angesichts der Tatsache, dass hier die Pommes selbstgemacht und nicht nur aufgewärmt sind, angemessen. Wir würden auf jeden Fall wieder hierher kommen, allein schon wegen der Satésaus!

Such a shame, they have delicious fries and fish. But if you ask for harder fries, you will still get soft fries after asking again. The kibbles were already ready in the box, so it was cold This is now the 3rd time I have thrown away my money because the staff cannot listen to the customer. And you just sell something.

Everything is more or less ok with the food, but the service is zero. For a smile and good morning, you either have to pay extra or be local. Shitty hospitality. I had to go to the counter three times even though I was sitting a meter away from the counter and no one bothered to call when the order was ready. Nationalism in 2024?

The Koala Express is an outdated snack bar. The furnishings are very spartan. There is real mass processing here and the staff seem mostly listless to me. Fries with mayonnaise, on the other hand, are cult here and are also convincing. However, “preparing” the currywurst takes some getting used to.

When I go shopping here from Wengern an der Ruhr with my friend Jutta, we always eat our fries 🍟 and the delicious Frikandel.

Somewhat outdated restaurants with a classic snack bar flair. And is designed for tourists. The staff speaks Dutch, English and German. The focus is on fries and frikandel. Outside they advertise the best fries in Venlo. These are optimal and you can tell that they are not frozen fries, but fresh potato fries. These taste good too. But there are better ones. But overall tasty, everything crispy and no old greasy taste or anything like that. The sauce is the classic or the Kola sauce. This is mayo mixed with mustard and some spiced ketchup. The frikandel was also very tasty and typically Dutch. The price-performance is fair.

The fries tasted like Frikandel fat and they were just scooped up leftovers. The sauces were okay.

So when we read the comments we couldn't believe it at first. But yes, unfortunately the fries don't taste as delicious anymore... the oil is definitely old... tastes like old fat from potato pancakes... but the fries could taste so delicious. Burping is now included :(

A pity. We entered the store, I was in the middle of the greeting when the waitress yelled at me at 5:44 p.m. that it was already closed. What caught our attention was the huge mountain of thawed, unfried fries lying on the shelf above the deep fryers. Whether they will be thrown away, who knows. But that's just speculation. Thanks but no. We won't be coming back, then 2 shops away to the Turk (Fermo), they are friendly and welcome customers.

When I was in Venlo last time I ate at Koala Express because it was recommended to me. It is also easy to find as it is directly opposite the well-known supermarket Die 2 Brüder. So I liked it there and the price-performance ratio was also right! I can also recommend the Koala Express and will come back!!

If you're looking for a place to sell raw fish and sandwiched together fries that don't taste good, this is the place for you. The shop is dirty and the food is just bad. The kibbeling was still raw and the fries only tasted like fat. NOT RECOMMENDABLE! (Visually the food looks good but the appearance is dull)
