August 16th, We really enjoyed our dinner outside on the terrace. We received an exceptionally friendly welcome and service! The wait was very short, even though it was busy. Fresh-cut fries, which even we Belgians could learn from! 😋 Even though it was busy, you had plenty of privacy at your table and the feeling of having your own little corner. Ample parking. The historic building itself is also beautiful and cozy. A big shout-out to the wait staff. 👌

We spontaneously popped into De Generaal for a quick drink last Monday afternoon, and we were immediately captivated by the atmosphere! Upon entering, we were greeted with a charming smile from bartender Joy, and then enjoyed delicious coffee! We'll definitely be back!

meer groente bij de maaltijden. mogelijkheid om tefel langs het bos te reserveren, desnoods ver voor de datum daarop in kunnen tekenen. de boter bij de biefstuk warm serveren, vloeibaar. niet houd, hard en in ronde pastille-vorm. Bij de tournedo 2 kleine wortel en 1/8 stukje lof, met een hard uiteinde, zo treurig, deze groentekeus en portie. De Hollandaisesaus bij de gnochi te karige portie . Bij het lamsvlees werd totaal geen groente geserveerd; ja een paar kikkererwten op het vlees. Mijn tournedos kwam zwart en toch rauw van binnen geserveerd, terwijl ik medium besteld had. Ik had patat ipv puree gevraagd, maar dat was niet doorgekomen in de keuken. het ijs was saai, met vreemde korrels erover. Overweeg een mooie royale ijswafel erop of twee. En een kan kraanwater op tafel, zoals vroeger, vind ik zelf een geste van gastvrijheid.

Heerlijk geluncht (mede dankzij het goede weer) op het terras van De Generaal. Vlotte, vriendelijke en attente bediening door Kris. Gratis kraanwater (naast onze uitgebreide drankomzet), altijd een pluspunt. Wat ons betreft aanbevelenswaardig.

I had a fantastic meal with my boyfriend on Saturday. The food and drinks arrived very quickly. We were served by Karin, who's a lovely chatterbox. She also thinks along with us about solutions, which is really great. We'll definitely be back!

We had a wonderful meal at De Generaal on Saturday. We were there in the evening and luckily it wasn't too busy. We really enjoyed the tenderloin steak. The terrace is lovely (a shame about the weather) and Noe, who brought our food, was great. We had a nice chat with him. We'll be back soon!

We were on our motorcycle trip and stopped at this charming location. The staff was friendly and the atmosphere is very pleasant. There are lovely seating options both inside and outside. The lunch we enjoyed was excellent. If you're near Baarn for a walk or motorcycle tour, 'De Generaal' is a great spot for lunch.

Wonderful, nostalgic atmosphere. Artisanal, fresh, and very tasty food. The ice cream with homemade whipped cream was excellent and a generous portion. Delicious with a cup of tea. The service was warm and helpful. Excellent value for money. A lovely terrace, large yet cozy, and surrounded by lush greenery. A step back in time.

Nice location. Authentic building, lunch dishes were excellent. We were able to order drinks right away. Then we ordered our lunch dishes. After asking several times, we didn't receive our drinks. After receiving our lunch dishes, we asked again for our drinks. It took a while again. It's a shame it went that way. Otherwise, it was fine. We went again for lunch today. Everything went well. We had a lovely time on the terrace.

We come here often, and the quality varies quite a bit. This time I opted for a salmon fillet and a sirloin steak. What the sirloin steak lacked, the salmon had in abundance. It was overcooked. The sirloin steak was somewhat tough and quite red, while the salmon was quite dry. Unfortunately, it was overcooked. It's a shame you never know in advance how things will go. It could and should be better. I expect De Generaal to be a bit better than a very average diner, especially when you pay almost 90 euros (without dessert).

What a beautiful place De Generaal is! We thoroughly enjoyed it. The food took a little while, but the service made up for it. We received our food from a friendly woman, and we were well-served by Hidde, who seemed enthusiastic, helped us well, and with whom we had a pleasant chat. We will definitely be back! 🤩!!

We had a reservation for two people. We were assigned a table with a wet bench and chair. We had to ask for a dry cushion to cover the wet cushion. We asked two staff members for water for the dog because the dog bowls were empty. There was no response. The meal was mediocre, and the mushrooms we ordered separately were tasteless. It's a nice location, but the quality and service left much to be desired. It's a shame.

What a fantastic improvement compared to four years ago. The benches are incredibly comfortable, the vibe is great, and there's even a jazz band on Thursdays! The icing on the cake is the service! Such friendly people! Especially Sascha!! She helped us all afternoon, super polite and always managed to crack a joke. What a great person! (If you're ever looking for a job ;)). In short, De Generaal: highly recommended!!

Had a drink on the patio with a colleague today. Beer and bitterballen. Excellent, especially compared to the last time I dined here with a group. I actually didn't think I'd return after that. Fortunately, I had another good experience with the service and atmosphere. The food was as expected, beer and bitterballen.

My wife and I had a delicious meal on Friday afternoon. It was very busy, but Karin helped us well. Even though it was busy, she remained calm and collected. The food was also delicious, and the wait wasn't long.

You're not greeted here; you have to take the initiative yourself. The service is clumsy/chaotic. The food is tasty—with good ingredients—but could be prepared with more care (especially for that price). General: You have willing (though mostly young) staff, but give them the tools to "take care" of guests. I can take care of myself perfectly well, but I go to restaurants/patios to get my mind off things. It's a beautiful location with a lot of potential.

Despite being busy, the restaurant had a wonderfully cozy and relaxed atmosphere. The staff remained friendly and attentive, which was truly remarkable. We were helped by Alisha, who was incredibly hospitable and professional. We felt welcome and well cared for. Highly recommended, and we'd love to return!

Last Monday, we visited 'De Generaal'. We noticed that you had to be dressed for this restaurant. People wearing shorts and hiking boots weren't helped immediately, but people wearing different 'clothing' were (these people arrived much later). While we were waiting, I saw people in hiking boots leave after sitting for a while. After gesturing to the staff, they did look at us, but then chose to serve others. I even took the menu from a side table. The staff was indignant, but if no one wants to come... After 20 minutes, a server (I'll call her M, I won't mention her real name here; her initials are sufficient) came to ask if we'd like something to drink and eat. Drinks were brought promptly after taking our order. Yassies, lipstick on the rim of the glass. We immediately asked for the service again, and you guessed it: look, but don't come. We reluctantly drained the contents of our glass. Afterwards, I confronted the staff about this. M said she was sorry, and no, everyone was being helped. But then again, it was busy. Meanwhile, out of the corner of my eye, I saw a family (in shorts and hiking boots) leave; they had also been waiting for a while. M told me I should have warned her about the dirty glass. How could I have done that? I raised my hand several times, "called out," and she didn't respond. She didn't seem interested. I ended the conversation and quickly left.

My girlfriend and I had a delicious mussels dinner. The service was excellent, and Annu was especially friendly. We'll be back soon 👍👌

A lovely spot on the edge of the woods near Baarn station. Don't be in a hurry here, as the staff aren't either. There are one or two employees on the patio who take orders. They are friendly and attentive, and enjoy chatting with old friends and colleagues. The food was delicious and fresh. In short: a beautiful historic restaurant, but take your time—they do too.

The restaurant is located in the former Baarn station. I've often passed it by train and always wanted to eat there. It's a nice building, in a good location, and beautifully decorated. You get a three-course meal for €39.95, and the food was excellent. The menu is also quite extensive, and for a little extra, you can order other things. I had carpaccio as a starter and the spring chicken for the main course. I forgot to take a picture of it, but it was excellent. Dessert was cheesecake mousse. However, this time it was very busy, and we had to wait a long time for our drinks. We ordered our second round well before the main course arrived, and we received it after we had finished, even though I had already asked for it several times. That's why we didn't stay for coffee, as I was going to a concert afterward. I'm sure it will be better next time. The service was good, and the terrace is comfortable.

(Saturday, July 5, 2025) I had a good experience (as usual) at De Generaal. Friendly staff in a beautiful location with a lovely terrace. The 3-course menu is therefore a no-brainer for the price, ensuring good value for money. Food - As a starter, there was nothing wrong with the carpaccio. I order this often, and it's always delivered consistently well. - The seasonal special "mussels" were well prepared, with two sauces to enhance the flavor of the mussels. Because this is a seasonal special and not on the regular menu, I'm pleasantly surprised that this doesn't incur a premium for the 3-course menu. - The cheesecake mousse is a dessert that could be further enhanced, such as removing the mint leaves (which I opted for). The menu also doesn't mention that the mousse had been sprinkled with bastonje cake particles, such a missed opportunity for a nice third course. - The side dishes, especially the sweet potato fries, were, as usual, a lovely and tasty addition. Comment(s) - Unfortunately, my table companion's tournedos was served cold and raw, but they resolved the issue by frying a new one and serving it within 10 minutes! - However, it took the bar 15-20 minutes to receive two beers; the bar wasn't at its fastest that day. We would like to thank Julia D. for the excellent service. She immediately addressed our complaint about the tournedos and kept us informed about our food. She is a friendly and hospitable staff member, whom we would like to commend in this way.

Cosy, solid old Dutch restaurant with royal roots

Nice to stay on the terrace. Food is fine. Adequate service.

We expected more. We had eaten here regularly and deliciously in the past. Unfortunately, it was not good this time. The shrimp croquettes were shrimp croquettes (so there was very little shrimp in them), the hamburgers were tasty but very small. The Ceasar salad consisted of a huge mountain of lettuce with a few pieces of chicken (and a piece of bone) and some grated parmesan and anchovies. The dressing was not to be tasted. The mussels were fine, but the promised cocktail sauce turned out to be a curry sauce without this being indicated when serving. The desserts were also not a party. The syrup waffle dessert was unimaginative and as a horrible flavor combination apple syrup on the syrup waffle. Brrr. With the cheesecake mousse the whipped cream had already collapsed when it was served. We saw a vacancy for a chef and we hope that it will be filled soon.

Too bad both (!) disabled parking spaces are used to unload stuff for the café! And that while there is also a separate place especially for 'loading and unloading' ...

We sat on a bench on the terrace with a view of the forest. 1 time someone came to the table to take the drinks order, a nice little girl. It took a really long time before we got our drinks, then a lost half stoned guy came who didn't know if it was right (whatever he said) and gave us the drinks very awkwardly. Then I got a beer instead of a weizen We didn't get a menu and waited long enough. After our drinks we just paid and left. When paying cash the girl said she wasn't sure if it was correct with the change. AND IN THE END IT WAS NOT CORRECT EITHER, 5 EURO TOO LITTLE GOT BACK DISGOLDEN, Never again

Used to eat here regularly. Was always good and cozy. After it has a new owner, ate here once and it was very bad. So won't come back.

Salad nicoise consisted mainly of large lettuce leaves with 1 canned haricot verts. Tuna was nicely fried but tasted like nothing. Dishes were not served at the same time so we had to wait for each other. Many dogs that you had to step over.

Beautiful building, nice location, great menu & fast service. Only all the (wet) dogs inside spoil the experience. They bark, stink, I am allergic and unfortunately get asthma from it. The toilet was also dirty...too bad. Tip: the general consists of several parts. Maybe only allow dogs in the conservatory and keep the inside area dog-free?

De Generaal is a cozy place with nice service. However, there were a few things that I had my doubts about. There was way too much mustard on my hamburger, the hamburger was not fully cooked, the salad that was served with it was impossible to eat (it seemed like it came straight out of the package) and the fries only came after I had finished my hamburger. Not really thought through. The service was good and friendly.

Nice and suitable place to talk/sit after or during a (forest) walk. On sunny days it is great to stay on the spacious terrace. The location has a long history which can be seen in the photos on the wall. Also easily accessible by public transport.

No attention from the staff and the dessert was disappointingly meager.

On Mother's Day with my wife, golden retriever puppy and children, I treated my dear mother to a drink at De Generaal. Unfortunately, we were treated very unfriendly by the manager, who did not make us feel welcome at all. The food came on the table before the drinks, my dog ​​had to go outside the dog bar if he wanted to drink water (the dog bar no longer contained a drop of water) and everything seemed like an impossible task for this gentleman. When my wife spoke to him about it at checkout, the response she received was “then you shouldn't come here anymore”. Please take this advice to heart, they probably have that one croquette from the appetizer that was very tasty (a second star!) somewhere else.

Delicious food and great location. Only if, as a guest, a glass of wine is thrown over you by the wind in front of the waiter, I expect him to grab a cloth or a stack of napkins. In the end we arranged this ourselves.

The atmosphere is very good. Very cozy terrace. Food wasn't that good. Patties were gone. Very lukewarm/cold (and therefore less tasty) croquettes, both spinach, goat cheese and shrimp. Fried egg very basic (really just 'an egg sandwich' and slices of fried bacon on it). Plate very bare. No garnish to be seen 🙁 Shame!

There coffee and cake for a walk around

We regularly go to the General for a cup of coffee and a cake. Until my girlfriend said: do you know how much your apple pie with whipped cream costs? 7.35!!!! 6.50 for the cake and 85 cents for the whipped cream. I said: no, you can't be wrong, you can almost buy a cake for that. (then a cake with say 8 pieces would cost 52.00...I didn't think so). But unfortunately, upon inquiry it turned out to be true. I think this is really disproportionate and making a profit at the expense of the customer. I really hope that you will take this to heart and start charging a normal price for pastries. Otherwise, no more cake for me.

Beautiful location. Terrace outside very nice and large. Tasty food. The only downside is that there is smoking while you eat there. Very distasteful. Great for smokers of course. Maybe, depending on the wind, reserve an outer part for that.

Slechte onervaren bediening, er ging erg veel fout. Teveel patat gekregen, verkeerde tosti gekregen, zag er overigens ook niet uit die tosti. 1 champignons ui besteld, 2 gekregen, wel gecrediteerd gelukkig. Er was geen satesaus of curry beschikbaar want volgens de bedrijfsleider zijn ze geen snackbar. Sorry hoor zelfs sterrenrestaurants hebben curry. De hele ervaring had wel wat weg van een simpele snackbar. De biefstuk die 2 mensen hadden was wel goed. Na klagen over de rekening zei hij, kijk even goed want het is wel goed gedaan, later moest hij hierop terug komen. Rekening uiteindelijk naar wens aangepast. Wij komen hier in ieder geval niet meer. Mooi locatie maar jammer van de staf

Thursday April 17, 2025 we went for a bite to eat with 2 other former colleagues. Nice location and very friendly staff, fast service. The food was good, Tournedos good, side dishes perhaps a little lacking. The temperature of the food could be a little warmer. It was a successful and very enjoyable evening, and therefore worth repeating at this location!

When we arrived, all tables were occupied. Still, we were asked to take a seat at the bar if we wanted to order a drink. When the first table became available, we ordered a delicious lunch. Country bread with pulled mushrooms and Dutch shrimp croquettes with country bread. Pleasant, professional and friendly staff. Good atmosphere.

Top spot! Lovely terrace and always friendly and good staff. Good cocktails and snacks and the best apple pie ever!

De Generaal is always a cozy and nice restaurant to go to. The last time we were there, the service was a bit messy due to staff illness and large crowds. The owner acted professionally and customer-oriented towards us. Such service really makes the difference!
