The spinach and goat cheese croquette was tasty. However, we had to wait a very long time for our drinks. There was also very little eye contact, so they often walked past us, which meant we had to ask a few times.

Lovely terrace where my little dog is welcome, and the tuna salad sandwiches and goat cheese spinach croquettes were delicious.

Fast and friendly service. Great value for money. Free parking in front of the restaurant. It is possible to eat without a reservation, but booking is recommended.

The food was good; however, we were asked if we wanted a bottle of water. After confirming, she asked if we wanted still water. We saw a swing-top bottle on another table and were surprised that we received a regular bottle. When paying, we saw that it cost almost €7. The waitress told us that we had asked for still water, not tap water. She acknowledged that tap water is also still. We deducted the cost of the bottle from the tip. It is not about the €7 for us, but rather about the fact that we were told that we had asked for it. So: if you want water, ask for tap water.

Every time I come here there is a certain section closed? Why? I walked away today .. too crowded in the area that was open .. no place to just sit and have a coffee.

A beautifully situated café-restaurant in a magnificent building, close to Baarn station. A great starting point for walks and bike rides.

We ate here last Saturday; we had a very good waiter. Unfortunately, the main course was brought out in stages. The adults received theirs first, while we were waiting for the children to get theirs as well. Eventually, we just started eating, as the children's food arrived much later. We still hadn't received our fries. They were finally served only when everyone had finished and the children were already playing outside again. Hopefully, next time will be better.

Fantastic place to sit! The restaurant has a spacious (non-smoking) terrace and plenty of seating inside. The menu is fairly standard, but therefore easy to navigate. Service is a bit slow and inattentive during the summer season, but that is perhaps to be expected during the holiday season.

The food itself was good, but relatively very expensive. Nice restaurant, but otherwise nothing special. Unfortunately, the staff consists of students who have absolutely no understanding of service. Perhaps it would be a good idea to have one or two supervisors shadow them. Sadly, our glass of red wine tipped over on the picnic table because the 'waiter' had placed it on a crack. After another waitress had cleaned the table and floor, he came to ask if I perhaps wanted a coaster under my glass..., but no new glass of red wine... We were a party of 8, but for me, this was the last time at De Generaal in Baarn.

The other person paid this for; 2 lattes and 2 apple pies €23.70😱😱 Cycle through quickly next time 🤣 Response to company. They did indeed bring the sugar bowl. There was nothing on two tables by the door. When I asked the waiter—a skinny young person—if this is a cappuccino, he replied: "Yes." Well, then I don't need to come by either, because you don't know what that is. Good luck with your business.

Not worth to go for dinner. Unhappy service staff energy & Not many menu options. But especially the annoyed service team who gave the energy that they were forced to be there, was the reason for us to leave. Eventhough watching the train was nice for kids.

Bad service, waited almost an hour, and when they finally shuffled over, they went to guests who had just arrived first. They also came over with the wrong order twice. The food isn't bad, but the service is worthless.😭

Waited a while. People who arrived later were already getting their food. The drink we ordered was something else. The fries arrived half an hour later. First, they were sweet potato fries, which we hadn't ordered. But we hope it will be better next time. The food was delicious.

The food was fine. We chose the lunch special. It took a while before someone took our order. It was also busy at that moment. In the end, the service was fine. The food did arrive very quickly, though.

Nice ambiance, atmospheric terrace. I have never eaten inside, so I have no idea what that is like. Took a lovely walk in the garden/woods before sitting down for dinner.

We were sitting there enjoying the sun with coffee and cake in front of us. The waitress wanted to open the parasol. We protested; we were enjoying the sunshine. A moment later, she returned and made the sun disappear along with the parasol. That’s what the boss told her to do. I asked if she would get the boss. That didn't happen. We finished our coffee and left disappointed. From now on, we will be looking for a customer-friendly terrace.

Very cozy despite the crowds, prompt service

A very nice place to sit, pleasant terrace, friendly service. Unfortunately, I found the food mediocre; I had the salmon blini and the cod. I found the salmon tasty but a bit unimaginative, and the cod was dry and the fries soggy. It was extremely busy, perhaps that had an influence.

I decided to stop by here for lunch. I ordered the coffee first. Then I received the menu. The selection is huge. In the end, I went for the meatballs. These were served before the coffee! The meatballs weren't top-notch. I suspect they weren't homemade. On the other hand, the coffee was good.

We had a delicious meal on a beautiful terrace. There were plenty of shady spots, and it is an especially nice restaurant if you want to take a walk in the woods. It is located at the start of several hiking trails.

You had to grab the drinks because the waiter didn't feel like serving everyone their drinks. He clearly wasn't in the mood. Soft drinks came in a glass (without a bottle), so clearly from a large bottle. The hamburger was small, very rare, and the buns were old, reheated, and very dry. A very small portion of fries, and that for €19.95. A real shame because the location is great. Never eating here again!

De Generaal in Baarn is ideally suited for a stop at the beginning or end of your cycling or walking tour. Naturally, also for lunch or dinner with family and friends.

We had a bite to eat at De Generaal prior to the Tom Jones show at the Royal Park. It was nice to sit quietly for a bit. It's a beautiful establishment, but I think they hadn't quite anticipated the crowds. All the guests arrived at pretty much the same time, and it's almost impossible to manage that. It was noticeable in the staff as well. Very unpleasant for them, too. Quite a few things went wrong around our table. Things didn't go entirely smoothly for us either. The tenderloin steak was mega fantastic and perfectly cooked. Definitely recommended. We had asked for fried mushrooms and fries to go with it. Unfortunately, these only arrived when we had already finished a large part of the steak (we had asked for them, of course, but you could tell it was really too busy). When the fried mushrooms arrived (which they removed from the bill due to the long wait), I noticed that they had barely been in the pan. So, not used up. A shame. There was no spoon with the coffee, and the dessert was also missing a spoon. In the end, we had to ask for the bill several times. We didn't see a manager or supervisor. At least, not visibly. It is certainly not a complaint, but perhaps they can take this into account in the future. If we ever come to Baarn again, I think I'll go back to the Generaal 🫶🏼

Last Thursday, we were enjoying a nice cup of coffee on the terrace when a waitress folded up the parasol. All the water on it spilled onto the table between us. My bag, shirt, and cardigan were soaked. The waitress mumbled something, fetched a tea towel, and then disappeared. No one asked if everything was alright, no apologies were offered, and no solution was proposed. I even suggested that a complimentary cup of coffee would be appropriate, but nothing was done about it. After half an hour, during which no one came to our table, I walked inside myself to arrange it. Suddenly, a complimentary cup of coffee turned out to be no problem at all. However, when settling the bill and leaving, there was once again no apology or friendly word to be had. We were practically ignored. We both have extensive experience in the hospitality industry and know that things can always go wrong. That is not the problem. It is about how you resolve it. The way this was handled was anything but hospitable and downright disappointing.

I was there recently in the evening for dinner and I enjoyed it very much, as well as the atmosphere in the restaurant. The food came out quite quickly for my liking and the service was perfect. We had Karin as our waitress who helped us and she assisted us perfectly.

I had another delicious meal here recently. De Generaal never disappoints me, no matter who I come with. In the summer, I can often be found on the beautiful terrace. It is a lovely place to sit with an amazing view. As far as I am concerned, this is by far the nicest terrace in the entire area. The food is always tasty. You can come here in the morning for a delicious fresh piece of cake or enjoy an extensive lunch on the terrace. The staff is very young, but incredibly friendly and hospitable. If there is a problem, they do everything they can to help you as best they can, even when it is very busy. I will definitely come back here, because I am incredibly satisfied every time. It is also great that they are now selling Stëlz!

We got a table quickly but had to wait a long time for the menu and something to drink. Everything took a long time; the staff paid no attention to the guests and were not alert, meaning we didn't get any drinks during our meal. Additionally, they seated me on a cushion that was still wet from the rain and thought it was normal for me to go home with wet trousers. Very bad experience!

We visited for our anniversary and enjoyed dining outside on the terrace. They also had live jazz music which was great. The waitress was very friendly and attentive in explaining menu items where we do not speak Dutch. The food was 10/10 and very delicious. Only rated the service 4/5 stars as it was very slow receiving courses and drinks ordered. However, we would still visit again on our next return trip to Baarn. We recommend the shrimp croquettes and carpaccio to start, followed by the steak and stroopenwaffle.

It was lovely sitting outside with our team, the drinks were nice and cold, and the traditional Dutch fries buffet with snacks was delicious!

We ate on the terrace on a weekday evening. It would have been a nice terrace, were it not for the fact that there were many smokers, causing a lot of smoke to linger under the parasols. There was plenty of friendly staff walking around, but the waiting time was a bit long. The food was tasty but on the pricey side, and also a bit pretentious. And with a wink to another restaurant, ‘a steak à la Loetje’… well, is that really necessary? All in all, a nice place with good food.

A really nice and unpretentious eatery right by the station. We were staying at a nearby campsite and stopped here for a drink in the evening; this is truly a place where you can just walk in wearing flip-flops, a three-piece suit, or any other outfit. Everyone feels at home here, and in my opinion, that is what hospitality is all about. The apple pie is highly recommended!

We had a delicious meal at a lovely spot on the terrace. The service was friendly, though sometimes a little too familiar with one another. Although most of the dishes were good, the waiter's explanation regarding the turbot was remarkable. It was swimming in a small bowl of butter, supposedly to make it nice and crispy, which it certainly wasn't. The waiter thought it was.

On our way from the station in Baarn, before starting a walking route, we went to get coffee and cake at De Generaal. Upon entering, we were asked if we wanted to pay. We informed the young man that we wanted to have something to eat or drink before paying. The coffee was okay, served after about 20 minutes. The apple cake was a major disappointment. Defrosted in the microwave, resulting in a hard crust and sickly sweet—and piping hot to boot. The cheesecake was also seriously sweet. Next time we go hiking in this beautiful area, we will skip this place.

I often come here for a cup of coffee, but today I had lunch with three and it was a very positive experience. Cozy atmosphere, the restaurant is full but there is plenty of attention. The food was incredibly delicious (fried eggs and omelette Florentine, so nothing exotic but just very tasty and generous portions).

We were here with the children after a walk through the Baarnse Bos. There was a spot on the terrace, a truly lovely place. The service was friendly and the vegetarian sharing platter was completely finished. The pastries were also very tasty. Highly recommended.

Food good, wait a bit too long, good atmosphere.

On King's Day, we thought we'd grab a nice bite to eat. Average busyness around the time, perfectly fine. Unfortunately, we sat at a table in front of the bar for about 20 minutes without being able to place a menu or order drinks. When it's busy, that is completely understandable (although putting down a menu is a small effort). But unfortunately, the staff took plenty of time to chat amongst themselves at the bar. We were completely invisible to them, even after trying to make eye contact and attracting their attention. Walked away irritated. Poor service.

The food was okay. However, very little for the price. The staff is mostly absent at the table. I had to walk to the bar myself up to 3 times. It is absolutely not the old Generaal anymore. I am going to look for another restaurant.

If you are in the area, you should definitely stop by here. Even if it's just for a bite to eat. It is a very beautiful monumental building. You feel like you've stepped back in time, although the modern train doesn't quite fit the picture. The food here is tasty. Friendly service. However, it can be chilly if you sit in the bar area due to the open door to the back terrace. It is busy, and if you definitely want a table in the lovely conservatory/veranda, I would recommend making a reservation. The price-quality ratio here is good 👍🏻.

I visit this area once or twice a year for work (we have an office in Soest), and this time my colleagues brought me here. The restaurant is truly unique: as far as I understood, it’s a former train station that has been converted into a restaurant. The atmosphere feels very local and authentic, not touristy at all, which makes the experience even more enjoyable. The outdoor area is beautiful, overlooking a garden and a large open space. There is also plenty of parking available just in front of the restaurant, which is very convenient. We had a reservation, so there was no waiting time to be seated. Service was friendly and generally quite fast, especially for starters and main courses. It slowed down a bit towards the end with desserts, but nothing major. Inside is very charming, but if the weather allows, I would definitely recommend sitting outside — it’s really the highlight. There is also a nice covered veranda, so you can still enjoy the outdoor feeling even if the weather is not perfect. As for the food, I went for local dishes. The smoked veal fillet starter was excellent, full of flavor and very well balanced. The beef tenderloin with sautéed mushrooms and onions was perfectly cooked and very tender. For dessert, I tried the stroopwafel with lemon mascarpone, strawberries, mint, and vanilla ice cream — a great combination and definitely worth it. Good selection of beers and wines as well, both local and international. Prices are very reasonable considering the quality. This is not a typical tourist destination, but if you happen to be in the area, I would highly recommend it.

I wouldn't recommend just walking in spontaneously, as the description suggests. We walked in spontaneously but weren't served. The staff were just standing around chatting with acquaintances on the terrace or with each other. We came here for lunch after walking 10 km, but after waiting for fifteen minutes, there was still no one to order from. Absolutely useless; there was a waiter serving us, but he did nothing about it when we pointed this out. So, we will go have lunch somewhere else, somewhere where we are appreciated.

It was served after about 10 minutes: a small glass of tomato soup, a croquette with bread, and a generously topped sandwich with cheese, walnuts, celery salad, and lettuce. Had a delicious meal. We had a delicious meal with the three-course menu. The waitress (blonde curly hair, wearing green Puma sneakers) was fantastic. In short, highly recommended. Delicious and very enjoyable.

Last Friday, the four of us had lunch, and as always, it was busy. We found it very strange that the boy who brought the drinks just shoved the tray down on the table and walked away. He did the same thing the second time. The second time, the (delicious) stroopwafels were just lying on the tray, which we didn't find very fresh. The pastries were tasty, but lukewarm (stupidly, I didn't mention it), and the salad was more lettuce than anything else (not helpful, but accepted). All in all, not very satisfied with how things went (even though I'd been there a month before and it was fine). It's definitely a shame. Ruth.

Delicious Gooise meatball and chicken ragout. The atmosphere is always good here, and the service is attentive. Beautiful weather, so we enjoyed sitting on the platform with a Texel beer on tap. The lunch menu could perhaps be expanded to include a satay, but who am I?

On Monday, November 3rd, I enjoyed a delicious lunch at De Generaal in Baarn with former colleagues. A pleasant atmosphere, a delicious lunch (noon), and fast and friendly service.

The food was very mediocre... for this price, you'd expect more. A goose stew wasn't really warm, but it was also disheveled and tasted nothing special. The staff were friendly young people.

I go there every Saturday for a pulled mushroom sandwich and apple pie. Both are incredibly delicious!!

3 course menu for 41.50 euros pp was fine

My experience was a tasteless plate of barely grilled cauliflower. No chives. Poorly stir-fried spinach and greasy baby potatoes, also fried without any seasoning. The staff didn't tell me these were included with the cauliflower. So I ordered fries. In short, €28.50 for this dish, including fries. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. I complained to the staff, and they said they would pass it on.

Delicious food. 4 stars because not everything on the menu was available. Excellent service and a cozy atmosphere. Ample parking.

The service was inexperienced, and our waitress at the beginning was truly unsuitable for the hospitality industry. She wasn't friendly or welcoming, and she lacked knowledge. When we asked if the burrata was pasteurized, she was met with a "no," even though she clearly had no idea what she was talking about. When asked if the hamburger could be cooked well done, she replied that it's always cooked the same way. After insisting that the hamburger absolutely had to be well done due to her pregnancy, she said, "Well, I'll mention it, but I can't guarantee it." The order was taken from one table; because we were a group, others had to keep repeating it. She should have walked to the other side of the table. The food was okay, nothing special. The atmosphere is good and cozy.

A beautiful restaurant with incredibly friendly staff. We arrived on a busy Sunday, but there was plenty of personal attention to make us feel welcome!

De Generaal is beautifully situated, nestled among the trees and next to the station. A lovely base after a visit to, in our case, the Concertgebouw. The only downside of the train is that it has to leave relentlessly on time, and we absolutely had to catch it otherwise the rest of our itinerary would be completely ruined. With our estimated time of two hours to leisurely devour a three-course meal, something went wrong. The man who took our order did everything he could to ensure our meal went smoothly, but behind the scenes, something went wrong. For one of us, part of the food was warm and the other cold. Microwave heating took an incredibly long time. The staff also didn't understand what was wrong. They were put in the impossible position of loyalty to their colleagues and understanding for us. The time between courses made it feel like we'd been forgotten. A shame, because we cherish the memories of this place.
