Grand Café Lodewijk in Wijk 06 Binnenstad

Nestled within the University Library at Drift, this café is nothing short of a haven in the heart of Utrecht, owing much to its outstanding team. Every single team member has always given me very good service and they’re always open for a chat. In view of another review I just read, special mention must be made of the two more experienced ladies on staff: their presence is a cornerstone of the café’s inviting atmosphere and they’re friendly and provide impeccable service. As for certain scathing reviews, such as the regrettable one by ‘Mel Bonnet’, they are entirely unfounded and grossly misrepresent the unparalleled experience offered at Café Lodewijk. One really cannot help but pity such negativity, for it speaks more of the reviewer than of the café itself, which remains a paragon of excellence. I recommend it unreservedly!

The Grand Café Lodewijk is located in the University Library, amidst the bustling intellectual activity and youthful, vibrant enthusiasm of the students. Ah! One comes here not only for the good coffee and delicacies, but for the entire atmosphere this café exudes. How dignified is the image of the student, hunched over books, their gaze sharp, their spirit inflamed! But the most graceful, enchanting presence is the beautiful female students whose slender figures parade past the counter. Most of them are still so young, delicate, and... fragile. Isn't it their presence that naturally makes the café shine? Upon entering, one feels once again that one has the full splendor of that youthful life with them forever! When one sits in this utterly charming corner of the university library, one can forget everything for a moment and live only in that glorious present of love, contentment, and zest for work. Yes, true work satisfaction can be experienced here, as all the students, in a kind of unspoken alliance, silently support each other in their intellectual labor. And oh, the staff – what a friendly, knowledgeable staff! The familiar faces, like friendly beacons of familiarity, give the place its character. Their warm welcome in the early morning light feels as if you've been coming for years. The coffee is delicious, stimulating the senses and awakening the spirit, accompanied by delicacies that are grand in their simplicity. But alas, how cruel is time! Already at three o'clock comes the cool signal... when the coffee set is polished and symbolically covered with a tea towel: "Service for the day is done." Then, a silence immediately descends where only moments ago the clinking of cups sounded, and the soft hiss of the coffee set served as reassuring background noise. It is, as it were, a final breath after a day full of life. In its stillness, the café carries the stories of today, and yet, somewhere, the secret, hopeful expectations of tomorrow already slumber softly.

My cappuccino tasted like charcoal. Since it was rush hour, I decided to give them a pass and try again. I got a latte today and it was okayish, but the woman behind the counter was incredibly rude and gave me an attitude. I used to spend a lot of money here twice a week whenever I stayed at the uni for lunch, but I guess it is over now. The only thing I'll miss is their panini with mozzarella and tomatoes.

The woman working there is always great to chat with and she knows her coffee!
