A wonderful place to escape the hustle and bustle for a while. It is equipped with all facilities and is clean and well-maintained. We found it ideal to park our stroller next to us on the terrace; there was plenty of room for it. This is definitely a place to enjoy a lovely lunch or dinner by the water. The Carpaccio was delicious, as were the croquettes.

It is a lovely place to sit. The food, service, and atmosphere are good. There are also activities for children, enclosed with an inflatable bouncy castle, etc. You have a beautiful view of the water, and you can also moor at the restaurant's jetty.

I love coming here for a walk or just to be by the water. It is surprising how quickly you get from Leeuwarden into greenery — you are there in no time, yet you immediately feel like you are truly out of the city. The water and the reed beds define the area. Especially early in the morning, it is beautifully quiet, with many birds and few people. It is also a lovely spot for birdwatchers; there is always something to see. The paths are easy to navigate and the area is well signposted, so you can easily take a walk around without any hassle. Ideal for a stroll with the dog or a weekend walk. On beautiful summer days, it is busy by the water, but that is part of the experience and the atmosphere remains relaxed. Outside of the season, you have it almost to yourself. The area is generally well-maintained and there are plenty of places to sit down and look around. Food way below par. It was really very bad. The service was also rude. We won't be coming back here.

We used to come here regularly during our bike rides. And it was always good. So now, for my husband's birthday, we decided to have dinner here. The welcome was top-notch! Friendly staff and drinks were on the table quickly. The starter also arrived fast. It was truly delicious! After that, things went downhill. I think it took about 40 minutes for the main course to arrive. And this was actually a bit disappointing. The taste was fine, by the way. But the food was lukewarm, even bordering on cold. The fries, on the other hand, were hot. It seemed very much like the main courses were already ready, but the side dishes weren't yet. Naturally, we pointed this out to the waitress. She indicated that they had started running immediately when the dishes were ready. But surely you should get hot food then, it seems to me. Furthermore, the prices are quite high. I am quite willing to pay, but you are allowed to expect something in return.

Very bad. We reserved for 4:30 with a group of 15 people and finally received our starter at 7 pm. Additionally, ordering was difficult and the food was cold and raw. This with two people over 80 and a young child of 2 years old.

In terms of quantity, the main course was not much; compote was supposed to accompany the dish. I asked for it twice but did not receive it. When everything had been cleared away, lettuce was offered as an alternative. Furthermore, there was no compensation or anything similar; it was not open to discussion.

-UPDATE- We accepted the invitation to the make-up dinner. On a Tuesday evening with 4 people again. We sat inside due to the weather. It wasn't very busy and “we were expected” 😇 2 people ordered the set menu. You get a selection of starters and desserts, and you choose the main course from the menu. The other 2 ordered from the menu. Delicious warm smoked eel and a mustard soup as starters. Main courses were fine. Everything was more than sufficient. ✅ It was a great evening, without any misses and worth repeating. Let's hope the restaurant can live up to this when it gets really busy! Many thanks for the second chance 😀🙏🏻 We got to keep our wallets 😎 It remains a beautiful place! By the water just outside Leeuwarden. We were there on Whit Sunday at 6:30 PM! Super busy and the staff were already overwhelmed! 🥾 A very young brigade without visible leadership! 👶🏼And then a lot goes wrong, it gets messy and a bit dirty. 🧹Lots of crockery, mess, and dirty tables. Incorrectly delivered drinks and poorly poured beer 🍺 The kitchen was also busy; waiting a bit longer isn't a problem with good company and nice weather with a drink. Hamburger 🍔 medium rare was lukewarm / rare and not hot. The taste was fine! The pork medallion was tasty, but a bit short on sauce. Asked once and they delivered a bit more sauce afterwards 👍🏼 And so it just drags on. The children 🧒 did their best but lacked direction and guidance! We had a wonderful lunch here! Restaurant De Groote Wielen is a beautiful place to truly enjoy yourself. We all sat on the lovely terrace with a stunning view over the water, which immediately created a relaxed holiday atmosphere. The lunch was very tasty, the service friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere cozy and casual. It was the kind of place where you like to linger a little longer to enjoy the view and the company. Highly recommended if you are near Leeuwarden and looking for a nice location for lunch or a drink by the water. We had a wonderful afternoon there with the whole family!

We had a staff outing last Friday. The boat trip was very enjoyable and well organized, with snacks and cold drinks. Upon returning, drinks were ordered; the service was very friendly. Before our dinner, we were offered baguette with herb butter; unfortunately, there was no herb butter. They said something else would be served in terms of spread. Up until the time to order, we didn't see any baguette or anything similar for everyone for dinner. I ordered pike perch myself with béarnaise sauce and baby carrots. 25.75 euros. Three baby carrots were limp. Rhubarb and nice large fries. Strangely enough, no fresh salad on the side. Personally, very disappointing. Having worked as a cook before. Yes, substandard.

Beautiful place, delicious food. But for the fourth time in a row now, the service has been truly terrible. We had to get the menu ourselves and walked in three times to ask if we could order something. Tip: Don't accept reservations if it's too busy for the staff. That's no fun for anyone.

It’s really lovely there. The food is fine too, but you pay a fortune here. If you order a sandwich, you don't get fries or salad with it. Everything is getting more expensive, but they invented it here. The price-quality ratio is just like spitting in your face. They are happy you’ve come to eat here, but they kick you while you’re down as soon as you have to pay. Unsociable owner. One drink and some food for two people easily costs €50-70.

Beautiful restaurant, nice and friendly service.

The food was delicious, but what really stood out was the super friendly staff. Host Timo was fantastic and helped us extra quickly because we had to catch the boat to Ameland. His colleagues were also incredibly friendly and helpful, by the way.

Beautiful location by the water. Super large, atmospheric terrace, and the interior is also very nicely decorated. You can also moor your boat. I had a high tea, and it was fine. Furthermore, the service was nice and friendly.

It was busy today, but we managed to secure a spot and were served by a very friendly employee and his colleagues. Unfortunately, we had other plans, otherwise we would have had a bite to eat there.

A pleasant place to sit. Inside, small play areas for smaller children. Outside, a large bouncy castle and slide. Friendly staff, though it was a shame the waitress had chewing gum. Food is fine, but expensive. Don't order the nachos as they are far too dry and tasteless. Tasty pastries!

Hummus sandwich without hummus. Carpaccio at lunchtime was very meager. Lukewarm croquettes. Everyone on white bread even though only one person asked for it. It is clearly visible that there is little experienced staff. Been there twice now. Orders are not being processed properly. Last time a vegetarian lunch with bacon bits in the soup. A shame for this beautiful location.

Because the restaurant's location is nice, I have been here often. But actually, I always leave with a bad feeling. And that isn't due to the food; that is (by now) okay. It is purely due to the service. Upon entering, you expect some kind of welcome, or at the very least someone approachable so you can mention that you have a reservation. That wasn't the case again this time, so I just chose a table myself, and that feels strange. And also kind of funny: the reservation confirmation email mentions a team eager to give you a fantastic experience, but there is no ‘team,’ and certainly not a team eager! The staff consists of children who, while friendly, really have no hospitality experience, and you notice that in everything. Furthermore, it seems there is no management walking around to keep things running smoothly and to correct and coach here and there, so the problem of unprofessional service remains. In summary, if you just want to eat at a nice place with ample parking and aren't sensitive to atmosphere, then this is a fine place to go. However, if you expect something more, and wish to arrive, stay, and depart as a valued guest, then I would choose something else.

What terrible service, they slammed the plates on the table, I got hit in the head with a plate.. Fine for drinks, but skip dinner. Everything tasted like onion... especially the salads. The sweet potato fries looked like they were fried four times, they were disgustingly black. We weren't asked if we wanted another drink. Plates weren't cleared, we left immediately. They couldn't find the bill, pff. Really, a waste of money.

We decided to eat here spontaneously and were more than welcome. Friendly, somewhat younger staff. Everything was well taken care of. We opted for the tasting menu, which includes a main course of your choice and a tasting of various starters and desserts. This was highly recommended and also more than sufficient in terms of quantity. In summary, a recommended restaurant where you can eat well and which is also located in a beautiful spot with a view.

We attended bingo, which was well organized by the restaurant! The service was fast and efficient, the atmosphere was pleasant, and the room was beautifully decorated. Overall, we had a very successful evening and would definitely recommend it!

Had lunch at Groote Wielen this afternoon. My wife had the chicken thigh satay, which was very tasty... but my beef hamburger was so hard on the outside that I could barely get the knife through it... and completely cooked on the inside... even though the menu says medium rare... otherwise, I really like the restaurant and the atmosphere!

Sitting nicely in the sun, but when you've been sitting there waiting for half an hour and no one is paying attention to you, we thought that was enough, so we just got something from the supermarket ourselves.

Unfortunately, we had a bad experience. We ate at this restaurant yesterday. I remembered it from my childhood, and we went there with friends after a lovely day of visiting. My partner and I had onion soup followed by Frisian stew, which we thought was appropriate. It wasn't really very hot, but I had to go to the toilet very quickly and didn't feel entirely well. Back home in Alkmaar, we were so sick after the meal, and today, too, things are literally going downhill for both of us, involving vomiting and the rest—which you can probably guess. A terrible end to what was supposed to be a beautiful day. According to my doctor, the stew was probably heated but not thoroughly warmed through, causing us to get quite sick. It is a real shame about the outcome of the day. Something I read quite often, and which we also experienced, is absolutely no value for money. The food is truly way too expensive for what you get. The hostess wasn't very motivated either, whereas the waitress was very friendly. The location is beautiful, but the way we felt and still feel doesn't make up for it. Unfortunately, we do not visit Leeuwarden very regularly anymore; we were born and raised there, but sadly, we do not return to this location when we are in Leeuwarden.

We had lunch at your restaurant today, located in a beautiful spot! We had a great view and a delicious lunch. The service was very friendly; our dog even got a water bowl and a biscuit. The drinks were on the table within 3 minutes and the food within 15 minutes! Fast times considering how busy they were, as the restaurant was full. We definitely recommend this place; it has a very nice atmosphere and is a beautiful spot!

- Bad experience today, don't know if I will come here again or recommend it to others. - The cook with a brown, lightly shaved beard is eating straight from the tortilla chips bag; not a big deal, but make sure you don't lick your finger afterwards and then start preparing other food and displaying it openly. - Staff do not adhere to hygiene rules, but perhaps this is just part of this restaurant. Long nails (fake nails), hair half-tied back for waitstaff, rings and watches worn by kitchen staff, gloves on, but taping off your face and things from the floor, and then preparing food without washing hands in between. - Staff are slow to assist; it takes 15 minutes before you can order drinks, and then it takes 45 minutes to get a charcuterie board. - Food sits there for about 20 minutes until it is served. - Several times, customers/children have come to the bar asking if they can be served. The staff handles this well, but in my opinion, it isn't really necessary. Staff are nicer to children than to adults; if they indicate it, they are quickly told "I'm right there, food is on its way." - Tables remain dirty and are not cleared quickly; this takes more than 15 minutes. It happens faster if people sit at the dirty table. - Food is good, drinks selection is decent. - Staff probably have a very good time together if they gossip loud enough about the staff leaving. - Regardless, it is a beautiful location for a low price. A shame about the service.

Last Sunday I paid another visit to De Groote Wielen, but unfortunately, it was disappointing once again. I come from a time when the location offered a cozy atmosphere and the food was fine! Now, after the makeover and having eaten there twice, I say: I won't be returning for the time being. It's a shame, because the location is fantastic and parking is not a problem. The service scores the highest with three stars, but there is much room for improvement regarding the food and hygiene. On the other hand, the prices are quite high and do not match what is offered!

What a wonderfully beautiful location, and the interior is also super modern and tastefully decorated!! Nice staff, delicious food at a reasonable price, but above all tasty and plentiful; highly recommended, we will be going there more often 👍👍😎

What a lovely spot for lunch or dinner! Restaurant De Groote Wielen is beautifully situated on the waterfront, just outside Leeuwarden. The terrace is right on the water, so you can enjoy a view of the boats and the open water while you eat. On a sunny day, it's truly a pleasure. There are few restaurants in Leeuwarden where you're so close to the water. We went for lunch, and it was surprisingly good. We had bread with tuna salad and bread with croquettes. The bread itself was especially delicious. I don't say it often, but this was perhaps the best bread I've ever had. It had a brioche-like texture, wonderfully soft on the inside with a crispy crust. It made even a classic croquette lunch truly special. The restaurant itself looks modern and well-maintained, and the atmosphere is relaxed. Inside, it's beautifully decorated with lots of wood and large windows, allowing you to enjoy the water view even indoors. A place we'll definitely return to, especially on a sunny day for lunch on the terrace. Highly recommended if you are in Leeuwarden.

We went for dinner yesterday. We were overlooked right from the start. We weren't welcomed, and the person who was just paying someone else's bill simply left us standing. So we chose a table ourselves. It was pleasantly busy. It took a while before anyone joined us at our table. Afterward, we ordered drinks, but what immediately struck us was that the waitress was wearing a very wrinkled shirt and didn't seem particularly interested. Then we ordered our food. It was quite tasty. I had the pork schnitzel with cognac sauce. The sauce was tasty, but you had to search for it on the plate. My husband had the pike-perch. And my daughter had a grilled cheese sandwich. We were given one portion of fries, but we weren't told we could order them separately, since both my husband and I were supposed to have fries with it. The menu said the pork schnitzel was supposed to be with wild mushrooms. It did have mushrooms, but not what you'd expect with wild mushrooms (a mix of different mushrooms); they were just mushrooms. What was especially annoying was that I wanted to express that we weren't entirely satisfied, but the waitress was impossible to contact, and she didn't even come to ask during our meal if it was to our liking. After we finished our food, she didn't come for fifteen minutes to collect our plates and ask if we enjoyed them. I also mentioned that I found the service poor and that, despite it being delicious, it wasn't entirely to our liking. She offered me a cup of coffee, but I didn't want one because everything took so long and the waitress's atmosphere wasn't very welcoming. The price you pay here, combined with the service, means this isn't a restaurant we'll be returning to. It's a shame, because the location is beautiful.

Saturday evening, my wife and daughter dined at Groote Wielen. Our experience was extremely disappointing. We had to ask for the menu and to order drinks ourselves, but things didn't improve much after that. I didn't think the woman who initially served us was particularly enthusiastic about the evening. The woman who served us afterward, however, was very friendly. The main courses were poor quality and very expensive. My wife had the lekkerbek (€25!); the average fishmonger has a better one for less than half the price. Dry, greasy, and with only a little salad, it was very meager for this price. We should have at least had a cod lekkerbek. The hamburger buns my daughter and I had were far too thick, like meatballs on bread. Little flavor, very little cheese, and also overpriced. For €24, you expect something more. The fries that came with it were soggy. I don't understand how you can't manage to get a whole portion of fries. The tables around us hadn't been cleaned. One table still had debris from previous guests, and another was covered in food scraps. I'd always raved about this restaurant, having had several afternoon snacks and drinks, but this was absolutely terrible. And with a €95 bill, we might as well have gone to the snack bar for a hamburger.

Today, Boxing Day, I had a brunch buffet with the in-laws. It was rather disappointing. It started with cold coffee. As was the soup. The cold dishes were fine. The hot dishes were gone very quickly and weren't replenished quickly. And the quality...not exceptional. The dessert was good, but because it was so busy, the line was quite long.

We celebrated my father-in-law's birthday with family. He was 95, and the restaurant staff made it very festive. They hung up streamers and balloons, and as a surprise, a delicious dessert with a fire fountain and 95 on it. So nice. Thank you so much! The great-grandchildren also had a great time; there was a coloring page for them, and they had a blast playing with the playthings. The food was delicious, and the service was excellent. Thank you!

A little carpaccio on the bread. For 16 euros

The burger was mediocre; it had been under a heat lamp for at least 10 minutes before being served, making it dry. The fries were no longer warm. I requested sweet potato fries instead of regular fries, which was initially included as an extra on the bill. After complaining, they were changed. Too expensive, even after this correction.

Disappointing experience despite beautiful surroundings! Restaurant De Groote Wielen in Leeuwarden looks promising at first glance: the setting is beautiful and well-maintained. Unfortunately, the rest of the evening didn't match that. What started with high expectations ended in a series of disappointments. Mistakes can always happen, but this was a series of sloppiness and poor service. The price-quality ratio is simply not balanced. When the main course, the avocado poke bowl, was served, the key ingredient was missing: avocado. When we pointed this out, we were told they were out of avocado – without any prior notice. Beef was chosen as an alternative, but it took another 20 minutes to arrive. The vegetarian rendang was so salty it was unpalatable. The stroopwafel monchoud dessert was served frozen, without the promised caramel and stroopwafels. Vanilla ice cream was served with the crème brûlée – which was fine in itself – instead of the advertised orange ice cream, vanilla ice cream was served. Another mistake was serving an alcoholic Skuumkoppe when 0.0% was ordered – a dangerous mistake for people who don't drink alcohol for medical or other reasons. Practically speaking, a lot also went wrong: only forks were provided at dessert when spoons were needed, there was a very long wait for clearing the table or taking orders, and the espressos ordered were cold. All in all, it was a chaotic experience with little attention to detail and service. For the relatively high prices, you simply expect more. I'm sharing this experience to protect others from the same disappointment. Hopefully, something will be done with this feedback. Following the aforementioned review, Groote Wielen contacted us immediately, took the feedback seriously, and proposed a solution.

Beautiful restaurant with very friendly staff. Perhaps a little more guidance for the newer staff would be recommended, but in any case, everyone does their best to make our stay as pleasant as possible. Also, a beautiful view of the Grote Wielen lake. They're set up for a cup of coffee or hot chocolate with real whipped cream if you feel like unwinding after a walk. But also for a delicious lunch. I think the quality is quite good. I also recently went with a group. There's a separate room for that that can be converted to suit your needs. Very pleasantly surprised.

It's super clean. Fast and good service. But I'm missing something: it feels like a fancy canteen and not a cozy restaurant. Incidentally, it seems like the perfect place to rent for parties.

We went to De Grote Wielen today and it took 20 minutes before staff came to take our order. After taking our order, we still hadn't arrived after 30 minutes. After waiting 10 minutes, unfortunately, nothing, so we left. We'd already been waiting an hour and had to ask again... Beautiful location, plenty of parking, and plenty of seating.

This beautiful venue needed more TLC today. Weeds in the flowerbeds, dead flowers in the planters, and stains on the windows and tables. The fish was tasty, but still cold; the salmon was piping hot on a plate, but very salty with the sauce. The compote and fries were tasty, but we had higher expectations for this restaurant.

A really nice spot on the water. You can moor here, and it's a great place for kids, with a fun playground and a children's menu. The service was great, with friendly people and fast service.

I was visiting a birthday party with my family and stopped for a cake. We had drinks beforehand; I had an orange, milon, and orange drink. The drink was good, but more for those who like sour. There was quite a lot of orange in it, not a particularly ripe one, but that gave it a bit of a kick. When we went to eat a cake, I noticed there weren't many options. There were five in total, not a lot, but perfectly fine. I had a red velvet, and the flavor of the red part was actually perfect! However, there was a vanilla layer on the cake, which made it much less enjoyable. The "vanilla" layer is more like margarine; it was very greasy and overpowering. And it tasted like butter; if you were to make the layer a bit thinner, it would be more suitable. The restaurant itself looked very nice! Inside and out, the music was quite loud, but they immediately turned it down after I asked! The playlist was a bit busy, though, with constantly loud bass and mostly new music. I'd go for jazzy and calm instrumentals, especially since it was 11 o'clock in the morning ;). The music did change eventually, so it was fine. Four stars overall, it's highly recommended. But if you're looking for cakes, I'd go elsewhere.

I went here for the construction party, and everything was perfectly organized. It looked neat and there was plenty of room for everyone. The atmosphere was good, and the staff was friendly. Everything was simply well-organized, nothing to complain about. A great place for such a party!

Yesterday, we had lunch with four people. The satay was served in a unique way: not on a skewer, but simply a piece of chicken with skin and peanut sauce on top. We had three or four different staff members at our table, and all of them had stains and holes in their shirts/blouses. We find this absolutely unacceptable.

Een teleurstelling , bij het reserveren 3 dagen van tevoren i.v.m. mijn verjaardag aangegeven dat 1 persoon allergisch is voor de smaakversterkers E621 en E631. Bij binnenkomst dit nogmaals aan de dienstdoende medewerker aangegeven. Bij bestelling van de tomatensoep bleek dat dit niet mogelijk was vanwege ... juist, idem bij de mosterdsoep, als alternatief werd een broodplankje aangeboden. Het hoofdgerecht , zalm , was alleen mogelijk zonder bijbehorende saus. Ik zou denken dat je als kok wanneer je een dergelijke reservering binnenkrijgt je eerst gaan bedenken of en waar deze stoffen in jouw menu zitten en welke alternatieven je kunt aanbieden i.p.v. een broodplankje of zalm zonder sauzen. Het was tenslotte een dinsdagavond , niet druk, de kok had zijn fantasie kunnen uitleven om alsnog een soepje te creëren en om een saus zonder smaakversterkers samen te stellen. De rest van de bestelling voor de andere gast waren wel in orde.

The food was delicious, but it took far too long. The service was also very sloppy. Lots of things were mixed up, and after the main course, there was no one around to serve, so the desserts took far too long.

They've learned their lesson. The service is fast and very friendly. Lunch, the quality is excellent. And then comes the disappointment: the chairs! Terrible to sit on. Hard, short backrests—how can you possibly figure something like that out?

Very nice place, but the staff doesn't come around very often. We would have liked another drink but didn't see anyone else. A missed opportunity.

Goedenavond, Vandaag hebben we de 98-e verjaardag van mijn vader gevierd bij de Groote Wielen. Elk personeelslid feliciteerde mijn vader met zijn verjaardag en bij het presenteren van de koffie en het gebak kwamen een aantal personeelsleden zingen en stond er een vuurwerkfontein op zijn taartje. Bijzonder en erg lief. Dank jullie wel. NB: prettige prijzen ook. Mvg, Maria uit Almere.

Today we had dinner with five people. Everything was fine and the service was friendly and competent. Only the acoustics could be better. It is quite noisy inside. Dishes are also nicely served. Definitely go and eat if you are in the area. Beautiful place on the water with a small harbour in front of the door.

After waiting for about an hour we asked where our order was. [It can happen, it was busy] It was brought quickly, but unfortunately it turned out not to be possible, despite the fact that I had specified when ordering to replace white bread with brown bread, so instead of 1 white and 1 brown slice 2 slices of brown. How difficult can that be? Despite the friendly service I am very disappointed with the finish. Very bad, sorry!

High tea was fantastisch. Goede prijskwaliteitsverhouding. Heerlijke hapjes en onbeperkt koffie en thee. Bediening was vriendelijk en snel & de locatie is ook heel mooi! Je kan er met de boot aanmeren en zo het terras oplopen.

Salmon fine, fries were tough and cold. For dessert ordered the cheesecake with ice cream, only cheesecake on a pastry plate. For the price very meager.

On a quiet evening we wanted to have a bite to eat. After half an hour we were finally asked what we wanted to drink and after 45 minutes we still hadn't seen a menu. Unfortunately we went home hungry. Very bad service! Not recommended.
