Today, Boxing Day, I had a brunch buffet with the in-laws. It was rather disappointing. It started with cold coffee. As was the soup. The cold dishes were fine. The hot dishes were gone very quickly and weren't replenished quickly. And the quality...not exceptional. The dessert was good, but because it was so busy, the line was quite long.

What a wonderful place! You feel welcome, there's attention for the guests, and a smile is always present. Very friendly staff and a cozy restaurant. We dined there on Christmas Day and were truly spoiled!

We celebrated my father-in-law's birthday with family. He was 95, and the restaurant staff made it very festive. They hung up streamers and balloons, and as a surprise, a delicious dessert with a fire fountain and 95 on it. So nice. Thank you so much! The great-grandchildren also had a great time; there was a coloring page for them, and they had a blast playing with the playthings. The food was delicious, and the service was excellent. Thank you!

A little carpaccio on the bread. For 16 euros

The burger was mediocre; it had been under a heat lamp for at least 10 minutes before being served, making it dry. The fries were no longer warm. I requested sweet potato fries instead of regular fries, which was initially included as an extra on the bill. After complaining, they were changed. Too expensive, even after this correction.

Disappointing experience despite beautiful surroundings! Restaurant De Groote Wielen in Leeuwarden looks promising at first glance: the setting is beautiful and well-maintained. Unfortunately, the rest of the evening didn't match that. What started with high expectations ended in a series of disappointments. Mistakes can always happen, but this was a series of sloppiness and poor service. The price-quality ratio is simply not balanced. When the main course, the avocado poke bowl, was served, the key ingredient was missing: avocado. When we pointed this out, we were told they were out of avocado – without any prior notice. Beef was chosen as an alternative, but it took another 20 minutes to arrive. The vegetarian rendang was so salty it was unpalatable. The stroopwafel monchoud dessert was served frozen, without the promised caramel and stroopwafels. Vanilla ice cream was served with the crème brûlée – which was fine in itself – instead of the advertised orange ice cream, vanilla ice cream was served. Another mistake was serving an alcoholic Skuumkoppe when 0.0% was ordered – a dangerous mistake for people who don't drink alcohol for medical or other reasons. Practically speaking, a lot also went wrong: only forks were provided at dessert when spoons were needed, there was a very long wait for clearing the table or taking orders, and the espressos ordered were cold. All in all, it was a chaotic experience with little attention to detail and service. For the relatively high prices, you simply expect more. I'm sharing this experience to protect others from the same disappointment. Hopefully, something will be done with this feedback. Following the aforementioned review, Groote Wielen contacted us immediately, took the feedback seriously, and proposed a solution.

The most beautiful terrace in Leeuwarden when the sun shines, beautiful view. The fries are really delicious. The service can be a bit slow taking orders sometimes, but that doesn't spoil the fun 😎

Beautiful restaurant with very friendly staff. Perhaps a little more guidance for the newer staff would be recommended, but in any case, everyone does their best to make our stay as pleasant as possible. Also, a beautiful view of the Grote Wielen lake. They're set up for a cup of coffee or hot chocolate with real whipped cream if you feel like unwinding after a walk. But also for a delicious lunch. I think the quality is quite good. I also recently went with a group. There's a separate room for that that can be converted to suit your needs. Very pleasantly surprised.

It's super clean. Fast and good service. But I'm missing something: it feels like a fancy canteen and not a cozy restaurant. Incidentally, it seems like the perfect place to rent for parties.

The ribeye was really bad, it had no flavor. Not recommended. I didn't eat it, but the dessert was delicious. The little kids can make their own dessert. Super fun! It's just a shame about the ribeye. I also didn't like the fries. But the service was excellent, and the atmosphere was great too.

We went to De Grote Wielen today and it took 20 minutes before staff came to take our order. After taking our order, we still hadn't arrived after 30 minutes. After waiting 10 minutes, unfortunately, nothing, so we left. We'd already been waiting an hour and had to ask again... Beautiful location, plenty of parking, and plenty of seating.

In terms of location, this is a beautiful and charming restaurant. The seating is wonderful, overlooking the lake, and the service is friendly. The food is good, but not particularly special in my opinion.

A really nice spot on the water. You can moor here, and it's a great place for kids, with a fun playground and a children's menu. The service was great, with friendly people and fast service.

I was visiting a birthday party with my family and stopped for a cake. We had drinks beforehand; I had an orange, milon, and orange drink. The drink was good, but more for those who like sour. There was quite a lot of orange in it, not a particularly ripe one, but that gave it a bit of a kick. When we went to eat a cake, I noticed there weren't many options. There were five in total, not a lot, but perfectly fine. I had a red velvet, and the flavor of the red part was actually perfect! However, there was a vanilla layer on the cake, which made it much less enjoyable. The "vanilla" layer is more like margarine; it was very greasy and overpowering. And it tasted like butter; if you were to make the layer a bit thinner, it would be more suitable. The restaurant itself looked very nice! Inside and out, the music was quite loud, but they immediately turned it down after I asked! The playlist was a bit busy, though, with constantly loud bass and mostly new music. I'd go for jazzy and calm instrumentals, especially since it was 11 o'clock in the morning ;). The music did change eventually, so it was fine. Four stars overall, it's highly recommended. But if you're looking for cakes, I'd go elsewhere.

This beautiful venue needed more TLC today. Weeds in the flowerbeds, dead flowers in the planters, and stains on the windows and tables. The fish was tasty, but still cold; the salmon was piping hot on a plate, but very salty with the sauce. The compote and fries were tasty, but we had higher expectations for this restaurant.

I went here for the construction party, and everything was perfectly organized. It looked neat and there was plenty of room for everyone. The atmosphere was good, and the staff was friendly. Everything was simply well-organized, nothing to complain about. A great place for such a party!

Een teleurstelling , bij het reserveren 3 dagen van tevoren i.v.m. mijn verjaardag aangegeven dat 1 persoon allergisch is voor de smaakversterkers E621 en E631. Bij binnenkomst dit nogmaals aan de dienstdoende medewerker aangegeven. Bij bestelling van de tomatensoep bleek dat dit niet mogelijk was vanwege ... juist, idem bij de mosterdsoep, als alternatief werd een broodplankje aangeboden. Het hoofdgerecht , zalm , was alleen mogelijk zonder bijbehorende saus. Ik zou denken dat je als kok wanneer je een dergelijke reservering binnenkrijgt je eerst gaan bedenken of en waar deze stoffen in jouw menu zitten en welke alternatieven je kunt aanbieden i.p.v. een broodplankje of zalm zonder sauzen. Het was tenslotte een dinsdagavond , niet druk, de kok had zijn fantasie kunnen uitleven om alsnog een soepje te creëren en om een saus zonder smaakversterkers samen te stellen. De rest van de bestelling voor de andere gast waren wel in orde.

Yesterday, we had lunch with four people. The satay was served in a unique way: not on a skewer, but simply a piece of chicken with skin and peanut sauce on top. We had three or four different staff members at our table, and all of them had stains and holes in their shirts/blouses. We find this absolutely unacceptable.

The food was delicious, but it took far too long. The service was also very sloppy. Lots of things were mixed up, and after the main course, there was no one around to serve, so the desserts took far too long.

They've learned their lesson. The service is fast and very friendly. Lunch, the quality is excellent. And then comes the disappointment: the chairs! Terrible to sit on. Hard, short backrests—how can you possibly figure something like that out?

Very nice place, but the staff doesn't come around very often. We would have liked another drink but didn't see anyone else. A missed opportunity.

Goedenavond, Vandaag hebben we de 98-e verjaardag van mijn vader gevierd bij de Groote Wielen. Elk personeelslid feliciteerde mijn vader met zijn verjaardag en bij het presenteren van de koffie en het gebak kwamen een aantal personeelsleden zingen en stond er een vuurwerkfontein op zijn taartje. Bijzonder en erg lief. Dank jullie wel. NB: prettige prijzen ook. Mvg, Maria uit Almere.

Today we had dinner with five people. Everything was fine and the service was friendly and competent. Only the acoustics could be better. It is quite noisy inside. Dishes are also nicely served. Definitely go and eat if you are in the area. Beautiful place on the water with a small harbour in front of the door.

After waiting for about an hour we asked where our order was. [It can happen, it was busy] It was brought quickly, but unfortunately it turned out not to be possible, despite the fact that I had specified when ordering to replace white bread with brown bread, so instead of 1 white and 1 brown slice 2 slices of brown. How difficult can that be? Despite the friendly service I am very disappointed with the finish. Very bad, sorry!

High tea was fantastisch. Goede prijskwaliteitsverhouding. Heerlijke hapjes en onbeperkt koffie en thee. Bediening was vriendelijk en snel & de locatie is ook heel mooi! Je kan er met de boot aanmeren en zo het terras oplopen.

Salmon fine, fries were tough and cold. For dessert ordered the cheesecake with ice cream, only cheesecake on a pastry plate. For the price very meager.

Recently been here twice in one week. We wanted to have a drink by the water and have a nice dinner with a beautiful view. The restaurant is very spacious, as is the terrace. We were impressed by the space. Everything looked beautiful too. Both times we were well taken care of and the food was surprisingly tasty. We are glad we went here once and will definitely come back.

Nice place, layout leaves something to be desired which can make it a bit noisy. Menu is ok but don't expect any highlights. Service leaves something to be desired, multiple people at the table instead of fixed quarters, simple soft drinks cost 10 minutes while the place was far from full, they are constantly talking to each other but asking if you want something else to drink while the sandwiches are served after 30 minutes! is asking too much.

I asked myself, why are we trying again? Although the food was tasty (although expensive), although the lettuce leaf was missing on all burgers, the service is still not up to par. It's not that the staff doesn't try. They support each other and sometimes have to play babysitter when many parents let their child get in the way of the waiters or show very disruptive behavior. So kudos. But it's not running smoothly. I don't know what it is. There was enough staff now, they weren't as young as the previous times and it wasn't full. But it's going so slowly. It would be nice if the management would find out where the problem is. You expect better from owners who also have a busy restaurant in the city center. Especially after 3 years. Addition 25‐5: following review good communication and had a good lunch for the second chance. There was nothing wrong with that. Adjusted my score accordingly. Thanks for the good service.

Nice restaurant with a good menu, tasty food and drinks

Well, what can you say. We were placed at a dirty table that was half cleaned by the hostess. Then we had to ask our waiter twice to clean the table. Eventually another waitress cleaned the table with love as it should be. In the meantime, as a customer, you sit there for half an hour looking at a dirty table top. Incomprehensible... The food was quite tasty but certainly not really warm. The fries were only brought when half of what was on the plate was already gone. We didn't see the compote at all. We did indicate this when asked if everything was to our liking, but there was no response. In short. Don't be a thief of your own wallet and go eat somewhere else where you are treated as a guest.

Parking is easy. Less than a minute's walk from the car. Plenty of seating both inside and outside. Outside is lovely with a beautiful view of nature, by the water (with a screen in between for the wind). Service is great. Food was there fairly quickly. And the food is also tasty. I had a carpaccio sandwich, which is well filled. Definitely recommended to sit on the terrace on a nice summer day!

Had a particularly bad experience at this restaurant on Sunday 11-05-2025. After waiting almost 1 hour for simple snacks, salad and drinks, we finally got our food served cold. The salad consisted almost entirely of lettuce with hardly any chicken in it, and the nachos we ordered with the food only arrived after we had already finished eating. To make matters worse, the nachos were full of onions and almost no cheese — which is not at all what you expect nachos to be. Every time we asked how long it would take, we were told “the kitchen is busy”. But waiting an hour for snacks is really unacceptable. When the nachos finally arrived, we were already full and I asked if they could pack them up to take with us. The employee then threw it away without asking. When I pointed this out at the till and asked where my food was, I was told a simple “oh sorry, I threw it away”. To my surprise, the dish was still on the bill. Even though I was angry about this, I paid so I wouldn't have to argue further about such a bad case. In short: very bad service, bad food, and no customer friendliness at all. I don't recommend anyone to eat here. Waste of your time and money.

Beautiful weather, many guests and few staff, so it took a very long time before an order was taken and the order was delivered. A bit chaotic but ultimately a tasty meal.

I hesitated for a long time whether or not to write a review. It was resolved again and I shouldn't complain so much. But it won't let me go. It's a great place to sit, beautiful terrace with fantastic views. This was our 8th time, we always go for that nice spot. Yet the food is always very mediocre or downright bad. As a vegan you have no options and vegetarian options are limited, but that doesn't matter if the quality is good. It is always resolved neatly, but the setbacks no longer outweigh the beautiful place. Cappuccino cold, you get a new one where the duumke floats in the foot bath on the saucer. I think: never mind because I was already complaining about the coffee. The waitress was wearing a terribly overpowering perfume, but it didn't bother my husband so it must be just me. When the food comes to the table, I cannot help but feel that you have to accept that you are paying a lot for a nice place with very mediocre food. I mentioned it and it was neatly resolved. I may be a picky princess and the pea, but what I am served is taken out of the kitchen with dry eyes and placed in front of me and I experience as a great insult. Even if you don't want to eat slabs of meat, pieces of bread or fries, you can do your best in the kitchen and the service. I didn't have to pay for the Buddha bowl, but I don't think anything will change about the 'dish' (rice, some raw nuts, diced tomatoes, cucumber, red cabbage, canned beans) that is eaten for €14.95 by customers who take it for granted with the great view, like I always did. "We've never had a complaint about it, ma'am." I don't think anyone has ever ordered this, the chef clearly didn't know what to do with it.

Nice restaurant, but the staff isn't quite there, you have to wait a little longer for your drinks/food and you have to call the staff more often if you want to order something, annoying for some people, not a big deal for some people..

We came for high tea and it was great! Staff friendly, but need to communicate better with each other. Waiting more than half an hour for a bowl of hot water is too long! Decor not my style, wooden chairs that make you feel exhausted and wooden tables. Bare/cold industrial design? Dogs are apparently welcome there, but the puddle was on the floor and was not cleaned up. Not for me again!

Booking a party will be fun and delicious

A while ago the four of us went to the lazy Sunday buffet. The food is okay, but not spectacular. Eventually, several products ran out and were not replenished until requested. There was also supposed to be children's entertainment, but unfortunately there was none. Waited 10 minutes at checkout before anyone came to the cash register. The line had now grown. The location is great!

Geweldig feest mogen geven in de bovenzaal van het restaurant Groote Wielen. Het personeel had alles goed voor elkaar. De gemaakte afspraken zijn een aantal weken vooraf telefonisch gecheckt en op de avond zelf. Alles was goed en op tijd. Het jonge personeel was vriendelijk en behulpzaam bij de opbouw en afbouw van het feest. Door bijvoorbeeld het apparatuur van de DJ naar beneden te sjouwen. Op het moment dat er per ongeluk rode wijn over de kleding kwam bij een gast van het feest, wist het personeel raad met witte wijn. Vervolgens ging de kleding in de was en droger. De gast mocht tijdelijk even een koksbroek lenen. Na al deze acties was er geen spoor van de rode wijn. Top gedaan door het personeel. Het personeel was ook gezellig in omgang en gaf complimenten aan de dansende gasten. Er was hierdoor een erg fijne wisselwerking. Kortom een top plek voor een feestje. De gasten waren ook erg enthousiast over het prachtige uitzicht vanuit de bovenzaal over het water en de ondergaande zon.

De carpaccio op mijn broodje leek uit vriezer re komen. Aangegeven bij bediening maar werd niet op gereageert. De kroketten waren lauwwarm. Al met al een erg dure lunch voor de kwaliteit die we kregen

Delicious food. Everyone has their own choice. Everything carefully laid out. The dessert was also beautiful and delicious. Portions very well balanced. Kaya was an excellent host.

Bediening was erg behulpzaam toen we met groep van 12 in plaats van 7 kwamen. Bediening niet super snel, maar wel heel erg vriendelijk. Goed gegeten voor goede prijs.

Keurige bediening eten is heerlijk, vooral de eigen bereide soep. Komen zeker terug voor een etentje en tussendoortjes. En zit er bovendien ook heel gezellig. Was 9 maart gaan fietsen en prachtig weer daar nog wat gaan drinken. Dan zit je daar prachtig bij het water.

Hello, today I stopped by with my husband after a motorcycle trip. After almost fifteen minutes I ordered our drinks and food at the counter and waited ten minutes for our drinks. After almost half an hour we still didn't have our food, then a waitress came and asked us if we wanted everything. We said no, my husband said I would like to pay, she mentioned what we had ordered. My husband said only the drinks, would you like to have the food we said no. We had to wait too long, we don't have to wait anymore, it's very bad that you have to wait so long

Friendly service, but a mess in terms of organization. Waiting 2.5 hours for lunch without prior warning is not normal.

Went for a brunch buffet this morning. No idea what was there, you could make it up yourself. Nothing was included and was not told. Plates were not replenished, coffee and tea were not ready and if you wanted something else you had to look for someone who could help. It was all very amateurish and as if they were doing this for the first time. I wouldn't go for the service. Nice view!

Made a second visit at the invitation of De Groote Wielen. shared feedback six months ago. This time a truly positive experience. Delicious food, quick, recognizable service and a beautiful location. We discussed the points from the first time with our table lady and we noticed that a lot has improved. That is nice to see and benefits the company! Will definitely come back again.

We hadden daar een heerlijke high tea. Alleen misten we wel een mesje. Voor het snijden van de scones en quiche. Maar verders was het allemaal lekker.

We hebben er met onze kinderen geluncht. Na meerdere keren fijne ervaring te hebben gehad, was het nu wat minder. De baguette met kip/kaas/tomaat/pesto was voor de helft helemaal doorweekt. Nadat we dit hebben aangegeven kregen we een nieuw broodje, maar helaas hetzelfde verhaal. Ik zou dit echt van de kaart halen, want zo voorzetten is echt niet oké. Bediening verder aardig. Attent om dit artikel van de rekening te halen. Echter als je gebruik maakt van de actie 2e lunchgerecht gratis (zoals wij), betaal je dus gewoon nog hetzelfde...
