We dined at Japub today, and I must say it exceeded our expectations. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, with traditional Japanese decor that set a relaxing mood. The staff were attentive. I started with the bluefin tuna with cucumber and nori, which was flavorful and comforting. For the second course, I had bonito served with chopped spring onions and seaweed. I also ordered sushi and nigiri with chu-toro and o-toro, and I was impressed by the freshness and quality of the fish. Each piece was beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. The salmon rolls were perfectly creamy and complemented the sushi well. Additionally, the sake was a perfect combination with the food, enhancing the overall dining experience. Overall, Japub is a must-visit for anyone craving authentic Japanese cuisine. The combination of delicious food, excellent service, and a cozy ambiance makes it a standout choice. Before JAPUB, this humble spot on the Jekerstraat was home to Kaiko, one of the Netherlands’ first and most beloved sushi restaurants. Alongside Yamazato and Umeno, it was one of the few truly authentic Japanese places in the city. I’ve been coming here since childhood, and ever since Chef Kobayashi of Kaiko stepped down, I’ve been quietly hoping that someone worthy would carry on the legacy. I’m thrilled to say that JAPUB is that successor. What you’ve created is exactly what Amsterdam needs - a no-nonsense Japanese restaurant and sake bar offering an affordable yet refined omakase experience. While others chase trends with gold leaf and caviar, JAPUB stays grounded in honest, beautiful Japanese cuisine. One of the highlights was the salmon, marinated for three days in sake leaf and miso. It reminded us of black cod, but richer, with crisp skin and deep, savory flavor. Our omakase featured a thoughtfully paced selection of nigiri, beginning with fresh, summery notes like red snapper with citrus and salt, and building toward seared otoro with a gently thickened, not-too-sweet teriyaki glaze. For dessert, a delightful surprise: negitoro maki with pickled daikon. Unexpected, satisfying, and fun. JAPUB brings back everything I love about Japan. It fills the space Kaiko once held, not with extravagance but with authenticity. Thank you to the staff as well. Your warmth and conversation made the experience even better. We’ll be back. Visited in April 2025. This sushi restaurant was started by a Japanese owner who used to run a sushi restaurant in Cambodia and moved to the Netherlands. There are about 9 counter seats and 2 tables. There seems to be only one sushi handler, so if you go during a busy time, be prepared to wait for your food. The food is delicious, especially the red meat. Local people often ordered lean carpaccio. There are many different types of sake, so I think it's a good idea to pair sake with a variety of sashimi and sushi. I would like to spread the goodness of Japanese food to people living in the Netherlands.

Reservations required, we had the evening course at the two-person counter. The lean meat was very delicious.

The quality of the products are overall very good quality and the owners are nice and their hospitality genuine. All that said paying what we did for this experience €350 for two people is not worth it at all.

I’ve been multiple times to Japan and this is the first time here in the Netherlands I really tast authentic japanese sushi. Definitely coming back, good quality and price. Sayonara

Easily one of the best Japanese restaurants in Amsterdam. Whether ordering a la carte or the omakase, you will have one of the most traditional Japanese dining experiences(izakaya style) you can have outside of Japan. Exceptional cooking and sushi with local and imported fish. Can not recommend enough!

For 90 euros per person a few pieces of fish, a small cup of soup and a cup of green dessert on a hard wooden bench and have to ask for a little soy sauce, Japanese haut cuisine. Only the tl tube is missing!! Empty on Saturday 20.00 hours!!! The green tea was the highlight of the evening.

Super cute place, we did the sushi omakase and I can say very comparable to what you get in Japan… super good quality, Oyakata very friendly and explaining each dish… im definitely coming back )

Look, the food is really good. Without a doubt. Had some divine nigiris, especially the red mullet and mackerel were as buttery soft as I ever had them in Japan. Top quality. Only... Due to a private party in the restaurant, we were taken to a kind of back room, where we had to eat our omakase menu next to a parked scooter and one meter away from the toilet. And no matter how fresh the sushi is, you are always afraid that the fish smell is not coming from your plate, but from the toilet.

The Sushi was very good. But the fried monkfish was not from the cheek but from the belly. So very tough instead of soft. The fact that they were stripes proves it. Cheeks are round. The fried salmon was dry. We had a nice evening but it was overpriced.

The place smelled of not fresh fish upon entering. The food was fine, nothing wrong with the service, but for the price (expensive!) far below par.

The food is very good. Everything we ate was very well prepared and tasted super fresh. The service was friendly and efficient. The omakase set arrived at regular intervals. The cost was €80 for one omakase set, and it was very good value for money for the variety of food and the freshness and cooking. Unfortunately, the restaurant decor and interior are in need of a major refresh. The dining room feels old, dark, and uninviting. It feels more like a run-down cafe than a higher end sushi restaurant. The seating is uncomfortable. With straight back wooden benches with old seat cushions that are lumpy and uneven. Sitting totally straight is not comfortable, and the seat cushions are so thin you are literally sitting on hard wood. The toilets are clean but again in need of a refresh. The same can be said for the crockery and cultery. Usually, when you are paying this price level, the tableware should at least look the part. The drinks menu has a reasonable selection of sake and wines but I would like to see some more Japanese drinks and teas. In summary the food and service is very good. The quality and amount of food you get for the price is excellent. But you really do have to be able to over look the overall ambience of the dining space. Hopefully, they will refresh the decor at some point.

Our first time, it was delicious, the monkfish liver was very tasty, the chef pickled the salmon sashimi a bit with salt, which gives a special taste, in short, we will come back again! 😃😃

Great authentic Japanese restaurant bar with excellent fish (sashimi /and sushi and other dishes) and sake. Big city vibe in a nice friendly neighbourhood. We go there every month or two since it opened. Totally recommended!

We had the omakase when we visited. Fish was very fresh and had a nice variety of food ranging from eel and tuna sashimi to crab and Japanese bbq meat. Owned by a very nice Japanese man, Kosuke. Would highly recommend this place, definitely on the top of our list when it comes to sushi!

Very good in all aspects. The fish is absolutely fresh. The rice is perfect. The staff is very friendly. Atmosphere relaxed and laid back.

Average food, very small selection of fish, nothing exciting in the presentation and the place has no vibes and poor decor, run down and not so clean. If you feel like I missed something please don't hesitate to contribute.

After one visit already one of my favorite Japanese places in Amsterdam. Really good omakase! Seya is an amazing chef! Everything was really good and really authentic. He suggested some really nice sake to go with it too. Highly recommended! Will come again soon!

Absolute gem, highly recommend! One of the best Japanese restaurants in Amsterdam if not the Netherlands. We enjoyed the Omakase, which included incredible sushi and other delicious dishes. The seared tuna skewer was one of my absolutely favourites.

Fantastic authentic sushi bar where the chef hand makes each bite, one by one, and serves it to you in the perfect sequence. The chef is lovely and the fish is very fresh and high quality. Have been waiting for sushi this good to come to Amsterdam and it is finally here!

Uitzonderlijk goed Japans gegeten. Zeer vriendelijke bediening met veel uitleg. Kwaliteit van de vis is top, bereiding is heel bijzonder. Wij komen hier zeker terug.

Incredible food and atmosphere! This hidden gem will probably not stay hidden for long. You sit at a very atmospheric bar, listening to jazz music, while the chef prepares the food. The toro tuna and the yellowtail nigiri were masterfully crafted! Besides that we had some delicious beef tataki and miso aubergine. The balance in the sauces were spot on. We would definitely recommend going while it is still easy to book a table!

Every now and then you discover a new place about which you want to shout from the rooftops (or not since you’d kind of like it to be a secret). japub opened on the previous Kaiko location which is how we discovered it. Great Omakase set menu (80€) with a large variety of sashimi, nigiri and hot an cold dishes. 10/10 would recommend.

Wow! This was amazing, very high level omakase sushi (a la carte also possible). Rice at perfect temperature and seasoning blended with beautiful seafood produce.

In all my tasteful live , putting this delicate art pieces, just right in the mouth gravity, and from there my whole being was mesmerised by wholly bliss witch continued long after gone 🙏🙏🙏
