The dishes (small fries with mayo, frikadel special, croquette) were delicious and exactly as expected. The ordering system on the screens was clear, straightforward, and comprehensive. If I'm in the area, I'd love to come back.

It's absolutely incomprehensible how anyone could give this place 4 stars—we were served cold, reheated, completely over-fried fries that were more reminiscent of fried wood chips in texture and taste. More than 1 star is completely overkill.

We visited Melis for the first time this year, driving 33 km from our home to Westcapelle (but also taking a 2 km walk along the beach, of course). It was once again delicious and plentiful. 1x Friet Moeilijk (Specialty + Satay), 1x Friet met Stoofvlees, €11.50. I had forgotten to order mayonnaise, and even got it for free. Friendly staff, very tasty and plentiful, including the Stoofvlees. Always a recommendation – other frituurs could learn a thing or two from their work, even if Melis doesn't have the great atmosphere of other places. But I'm going there for a snack, not a restaurant. 👋🥰

For years, we've been stopping by Melis for snacks every time we visit Westkapelle. Even when it's busy, we're always served fairly quickly. The location is great, the prices and quality of the food are top-notch, and the staff are friendly, too. (May 2025)

The food is fine, but the black-haired employee behind the counter still has a lot to learn about customer service. The order was taken incorrectly, and she made the wrong order, and we, as customers, were blamed for it even though we hadn't ordered it. Such a shame.

We came here 30 years ago on vacation. The fact that we're coming back speaks volumes, right?

A cult must-visit during your vacation

The fries? Golden brown, crispy, as if personally blessed by the potato gods. The atmosphere? Lovely, rural, with the aroma of happiness and grease. But then… the curry on the special fries. Sweet. Too sweet. Not Hela, but a curry that probably used to be on the children's menu.

It's as if Nehalennia has shed her tears in the frying fat. Each chip tastes like a gold bar plucked from the cloaca of a golden chicken. And what lactose-rich milkshakes! Delicious.

The place is buzzing, and it wouldn't be if the quality were poor. Delicious, typically Dutch snacks. Despite the crowds, the wait time is okay. If you want, you can order and pay via the display, similar to popular burger chains. You'll then receive a receipt with a number, and an electronic display tells you when it's ready. The ambiance is nothing special, and my table was greasy and dirty. There's room for improvement. Or you can take it with you and sit on the beach... 🙂

Delicious fresh fries and good-quality snacks. I go from Vlissingen to Westkapelle once a week just for Melis chip shop. It's also affordable, even cheaper than in the city during peak season. My favorite. And they have delicious satay there.

I've been coming here for many years, whenever I'm in the Netherlands. The fries used to be homemade and exceptionally delicious. Unfortunately, lately, the fries have become reminiscent of factory-made fries. What a shame.

We wanted kibbeling with fries. What we got was a family-sized portion of kibbeling dripping with grease, more breading than fish. The fries were also a disaster. We just had grease in our mouths, which could definitely be better. It's also a stupid solution that there's only one stand for fish, and if you want fries, you have to go to the stand in the same shop across the street. Never again.

melis frittenbude in westkapelle is a real gem the fries are cut and fried on the spot and you can just taste the difference they are without a doubt the tastiest fries you can eat crispy on the outside soft on the inside and just perfectly fried price quality is completely fine you get value for money and that is quite special these days in addition the kibbeling is really on a different level super fresh well seasoned and simply delicious if you are in the area this is an absolute must

Tasty dry fries. With a portion of satay of 3 sticks. Curry and mayo on top. I didn't like the wooden skewer so I did it with my fingers. You sit right next to the water. You can also enjoy a hot cappuccino. Fish with it or a nice soft ice cream. The portion was finally normal for once. The satay sauce was sweet which I'm not a fan of. Now it was already quite busy so in July/August take into account mega crowds so long queues to order.!

Well, I've had better fries ..... All those hard bits at the bottom and I found them very thin. I prefer thicker fries :)

I highly recommend it, especially the Bami, but not the ice cream with the chocolate drip. It's very heavy to eat and makes a huge mess. It was still delicious :)

Because of the bad service in Domburg, I cycled to Zoutelande for fries. At first I was a bit skeptical about fries at a beach bar. The friendly young man convinced me because the fries are homemade. Delicious fries, tasty mayonnaise, good price, and ditto portion. Potatoes are cut and fried on the spot. So that's why the small pieces in your container and the potatoes are fried twice. Fries as fries should be. Thank you, you made my day.

It was an unexpected highlight of my trip, and even now, back home in India, I find myself thinking about those fries and smiling. I just wanted to say thank you for the joy your food brought me. It’s amazing how something so simple, when made with care and love, can leave such a lasting impression. If it’s not a closely guarded secret, I’d be truly grateful if you could share a little bit about how you make your fries so amazing. The fries are okay. Unfortunately no thick Pomeranians, just the thin ones, some of which are very crispy. I was hoping for more.

Been coming here for over 30 years, but today is the last time. Super hard fries. Not tasty anymore, too bad. The bickering on the other side was even worse. Everything poured into the container.

If you want to eat really tasty fries somewhere: Definitely go to Melis Ambachtelijke Friet at the bottom of the dike. Where the fries are still cut themselves. Taking it with you is recommended. 300m by car to the dike or just walk up the stairs to eat with a sea view. The rush to order says it all. 😉

There's fries and there's fries. I really like the fries here. No mealy thick fries. But just tasty crispy fries. For me, fries and fries are the same, so anyone who thinks fries should be called fries or something else, too bad, because it's all about the golden yellow potato stems and how they taste I don't like corny things myself. It should be crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Furthermore, the snacks are also good.

"Hello, twee speciale frietjes alstublieft" and then everything went very quickly with the payment. With the receipt and the order number printed on it, there was a little wait in the pickup line. But everything is within reason. We didn't like the French fries that were fried a little too long. But that is a matter of taste. Everything was fine with mayo, curry ketchup and fresh onions. You can't really talk about the ambience here and evaluate it. To a certain extent, “tourist processing” takes place here. The Melis fish snack bar was right opposite! Highly recommended...

Melis Ambachtelijke Friet A must for us on every holiday in Holland! The location directly behind the dike is ideal. The fries are simply perfect – really crispy on the outside and wonderfully soft on the inside. The Frikandel Spezial are also very tasty. The prices seem reasonable for the quality. The only small negative point are the hungry seagulls, which can sometimes be a bit annoying.

Fries are often overcooked and dry, not freshly cut (all the same size). Yesterday Sunday the boy behind the counter apparently had a hangover and was not very friendly. My veggie burger was warm, but the bun, sauce and raw vegetables were still cold, which was not very appetizing.

I have been coming here for over 35 years and I have never been disappointed. Always top class fries and they come quickly too. Best place to eat fries in all of Zeeland (because what a view!) and quite a bit further afield too. For the whiners below and above who complain about weak fries (1) and hard pieces (2): 1. eat it right away and 2. do you really not understand what a potato looks like? They cut them here in front of you and yes, there is residual material included. If you don't understand what this top business is doing, just don't write anything.
