One of my favorite Japanese restaurants in Amsterdam. A nice and quiet place with lots to choose from. Quite pricey to be honest, but honestly very worth it. I enjoyed every bit of the food and drinks. Everything nice and fresh, you could taste it. My favorite suprise was the crispy fish cakes. For that only, I can keep revisiting them! Nice staff and a nice owner!

Authentic Japanese restaurant, however the wait was very long on a weekday evening (before a concert). The prices are very high.

The prices are quite expensive for what you get. The pork cutlet in the katsudon was soggy, and both the unagi rice and yakisoba tasted pretty average rather than impressive. Overall, the food felt very overpriced. Ironically, the best thing we had was the shaved ice dessert.

If you truly want to taste authentic Japanese food, this place deserves a visit at least once.

I’ve been there twice; the first time picking things off the menu and the second time with a group of 8 friends the lady mentioned the possibility of doing a set menu for €50. Everything was absolutely delicious, there is no single dish on the menu that you can be wrong with. The service is excellent, the lady will suggest dishes, take care of any allergies or pregnancies, give you hints on whether you ordered too much or too little. The price is definitely great for the quality and especially quantity you get. I’ll be there many more times!

Super authentic and delicious Japanese food! The owners are from Kyushu so they have a couple Kyushu specialties but I got the unagi box instead which was really good.

This place is a true hidden gem. The second you step in this place, you feel like you are in Japan. The staff is very friendly & the food is incredible. The tuna sashimi was basically melting in my mouth… Highly recommend!

Absolute gem of a restaurant for truly authentic Japanese. They have a big menu with many dishes you won't find elsewhere (like pickled cucumbers, sesame spinach and marinated cabbage) for a real home-cooking feel. You'll also find classics like sushi, curry, and noodles, all served by friendly staff in a cozy setting.

A must visit if you wanna have real Japanese food in Amsterdam, delicious! My favorite dish here is the Unajyu 😍

The Japanese vibes and people around the area made it feel more authentic and then topped off with the food even more. Always heard from japanese people that is tastes like ‘grandma’s’ and boy if I had a grandma like that, I would’ve been there everyday. Really nice people aswell. Absolutely loved my first visit to Orandaya! The sashimi was super fresh, the tempura perfectly crispy, and the whole menu feels truly authentic. The lovely hostess reminded me of my own grandmother. She was sooo cute and warm-hearted 🥰❤️ Prices are a bit higher, but totally fair given the location in Amsterdam Oud-Zuid and the excellent quality. Even though I’m busy with my business, I’ll definitely try to come back as often as I can to see her!

Second time visiting and the service is way better. The speed to serve food is fast and food tastes nice 😊 happy it went better this time. Last time: “The food tastes fine, but we waited 2 hours for the food, during which time we got the drink after around one hour. Feels like fully forgotten. The restaurant is surely lower staffed, as we only see one girl cooking in the kitchen… the waitress kept saying sorry, each time we checked how’s the food, she said 10 more minutes. Eventually we were told there is no rice anymore. Luckily I got my noodle, but my friends have to take their dish with cold sushi rice… a strange dining experience. They could have better communicated in the beginning, or just frankly told us the progress rather made us wait for 2 hours and said rice was finished…”

This is my go-to safe place when I crave real Japanese food :) they surprisingly have quite an extensive menu and serve a bit of everything I miss (nigiri, soba, tempura, curry, gyudons, eels on rice etc.) and they serve them all with a good fresh quality ! Btw the nigiri are fresh and delicious, love the tuna. It’s on the expensive side, but I prefer that they favor the quality. There’s also a good attention to the dishes and plates for each piece. There’s also the owner who’s an absolute cutipie and goes beyond the average Dutch service to make sure you feel good.

No atmosphere, food is bland. Service is ok. Dishes you can find better and cheaper in other Japanese izakaya's

This restaurant's unagi rice is significantly more expensive than other places, yet the service is abysmal. The elderly waitress, wearing glasses, was extremely rude. Our reservation was mistaken, our order was wrong, and, worst of all, they added dishes to the bill that we didn't even eat. All the dishes were overpriced and completely unworthy of the quality and service. I will never go back and will never recommend it to anyone.

We were the first table to arrive when the restaurant opened that afternoon, and the dishes were served smoothly. The service was excellent, though the interior was a bit oily. As for the food, we ordered eel rice and curry pork cutlet rice, which were both quite good. Compared to Dusseldorf, I heard more Japanese, which made it feel like visiting Japan. :)

Came in with high hopes and please don’t be deterred by my review, I’m cautioning you to be mindful of your order. The staff was very friendly and nice. I really don’t mind paying for great food but in my opinion, Orandaya is steeply priced. We spend upwards of 300 euros for three people shared dining. Sharing plates of katsu curry, sashimi, unagi no kabayaki, some pickles and a few beers/sake’s. A meal that would set me back no more than 150-200 elsewhere in Amsterdam or Amstelveen. I really like the restaurant but considering the stiffer competition in the market over the past few years, I hope they can re-invent their model. I can imagine this becoming a spot with lines in front of the door quite easily, but it requires some introspection. More power to you Orandaya. There is a lot of ask for humble Japanese cuisine out there, fill that void.

I love Orandaya! Every time I go back, the quality of the food and service amazes me - and I like knowing that this is also the choice of many Japanese people. Today, with a friend, we ordered tofu as a starter, a slightly spicy meat dish with onions that was great, and for dessert a Japanese crème brûlée - very light and very tasty! I always recommend it!

Very nice japanese place! We sat in the communal table and had a very good time… the sushi was very good! I wasn’t the biggest fan of their chicken karage, could have been a bit crunchier :) but for the rest of dishes 👍👍… also yummy desserts! Their japanese creme brulee top!

As a fan of unadon (the eel bowl), I’ve found this good place for it today. The dining area was very quiet and peaceful, which I love. Run by real Japanese staff, friendly people.

Excellent service. A family business with exceptional skill in presentation and food preparation. Inside there are cozy areas for family dining in Japanese style where you can take your shoes off and sit on your knees like in a Japanese household. Havn't see any of that here in Amsterdam except here. We started with some refreshing drinks a rahmune and a fruitdrink with pineapple pieces. Accompanied with some radish and mirrin for starter, takoyaki. BBQ Eel glazed with sauce. Japanese rice and miso soup with yuzu as apetiser. Fish broth with udon noodles and tofu. Their tofu is so soft it melts away in the mouth a must try in my opinion.

Orandaya has become my favorite Japanese restaurant in Amsterdam, where I revisit many times whenever I’m craving for authentic Japanese food. Family run business, fresh ingredients (which is very important for me), masterful cooking and excellent service!

Update: I found that my bill included the shaved ice which I already cancelled! The greedy owner didn’t show me an itemized bill. Now I have to repute via credit card. I 100000% not recommend and will share around. TL; DR: food average to ok, received rude and mean service from the owner, overall unpleasant and disappointing experience despite traveling long to eat here specifically. I ate here on July 31st for dinner. As someone from NYC, I deliberately travelled from airport hotel to this place to see how the food was and whether the social media recommendation (esp Chinese) was accurate. The food was ok (the assorted grilled chicken was meh; the tea rice was good; the pork katsu was average), but the service by the old Japanese lady with glasses was very DISRESPECTFUL. Whenever part of my order was ready, she just threw it on the table without saying anything or introducing what it was. But she’d say a lot of arigato (thank you) and sumimasen (sorry) to other tables and her colleagues (Japanese and white). Finally she only said “so” when she put a dish on my table, which was such disrespectful word to use to customers. But I guess she didn’t think I understood Japanese. The wait for each order was also extremely long - my first dish came after 40 min (almost questioned myself if this was fine dining lol). And when this woman saw me finishing everything except the dessert, she didn’t start making the dessert until after 20 min I told her I didn’t want it anymore and I couldn’t wait any longer. At the beginning I wanted to order something more as takeout for next day, but after this MEAN service I decided not to. I would not recommend this place based on my unpleasant experience.

The restaurant, located between Europaplein and de Pijp, offers both indoor and outdoor seating, perfect for a nice day. The atmosphere stood out to me as it was very quiet, unlike many other places where you have to shout over loud music. The staff was incredibly polite and welcoming. They changed the dish after every course, which added a nice touch to the dining experience. The fish was the freshest I’ve ever had in Amsterdam. I’m surprised this place only has 250 reviews! My boyfriend and I enjoyed baked gyoza, tuna sashimi, the Niji, another dish (the name escapes me), caramel mochi, and two Japanese beers. The total came to €148, which is a fair price for such fresh fish and high-quality products. The portions were just right; I left feeling full and even got a Chupa Chups 😊. I’ll definitely be back to try more of the menu. Highly recommended! 😉

After a disappointing experience at a 'Japanese' restaurant around the corner, we went here in the hope of finding some more traditional food. And that was a complete success! Because it was so delicious, we went here twice. First of all, the service is super friendly and you immediately feel welcome. The inside consists of cozy corners where you can certainly seat 5-6 people. They have a wide choice of drinks on the menu, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic. I understood from my friends that the umeshu was very tasty. I personally had the calpico soda and it also tasted as expected. Price for drinks is what you would expect from a restaurant in the Amsterdam area. Then the food, we finally tried the sushi, the curry karaage, the tonkatsu and the cold soba noodles. Everything tasted good! The curry is traditionally Japanese, just like the soba noodles. The tonkatsu tasted better than some restaurants I've tried in Japan. The sushi is also very tasty and fresh. The prices for sushi/sashimi are a bit on the high side, but you do get tasty food. Last but not least, we enjoyed matcha mochi and shaved ice cream here, both of which were very tasty. ごちそうさま! 美味し :) I would definitely go back here if I get the chance, if you are looking for traditional I would at least skip the 'izakaya' around the corner...

A similar Japanese “Izakaya” restaurant that you can also find in Japan. They really have everything. From sushi/sashimi to yakitori, yakisoba noodles etc. Pleasant service, able to have a chat here and there, the interior has quite an authentic look, and some tables outside. The food, in terms of price-quality ratio, was certainly not expensive. Their highball calpis mix and whiskey ginger ale mix are highly recommended!

Food tastes great, actually better than the common ones in Seattle. However the price is actually pretty steep that I was shocked. I think the karage was 12 euros, unaju (eel rice) was 35 euros, katsu curry 28-29 euros. Still adjusting to no tip and tax included (love this, please US stop with your stupid pre-tax price and passing the salary to customer via 15-20 tips), so after currency exchange might still be cheaper slightly compared to if you dine in in the States (in Seattle, NY, SF, good Japanese restaurants might run a bit higher after tax and tips).

Orandaya near RAI is a hidden gem of an authentic Japanese restaurant! From the moment you step in, the ambiance transports you straight to Japan. The menu boasts a wide array of authentic Japanese dishes, and each one we tried was a delight. From the exquisitely prepared Sushi to the flavorful Unajyu and the satisfying Ebiten Udon, every bite was a treat. And let's not forget the Japanese Shave Ice Matcha for dessert, a refreshing end to a fantastic meal. The owner's warm hospitality and attentive service added to the wonderful experience. Moreover, the price-quality ratio is excellent. If you're craving delicious and authentic Japanese cuisine at a reasonable price, Orandaya is a must-visit!

This was a great experience! We were 7 people and had a semi-private room reserved. We asked for them to prepare stuff instead of each of us picking things from a large menu (also mentioned that one of us is vegetarian). The food kept coming and everything was great! A lot of attention was given to vegetarian options too, with kindness. 10/10 would recommend.
