Restaurant De Beren (The Bears) in Wijk 07 Groenoord en Kethel

I visit De Beren often, but this time we were given a table at the back of the restaurant, even though I had reserved well in advance. The food was fine and the staff is friendly, but the view is truly unacceptable! You look out onto crates full of junk from the restaurant. Smoking employees sitting on top of the clutter in the racks. It takes little effort to create a partition behind which you put your junk so that this doesn't have to be the view for your guests who just want to have a pleasant dinner.

It was very bussy, food took a little bit longer than usual, but all things considered we had a great time! Can only recommend this place!

The food was delicious! Pork tenderloin satay nice and tender! Shrimp and prawns. Highly recommended. Service fast and friendly.

Unfortunately, the steak strips were not medium. Otherwise, everything was tasty. We were there at 6:15 p.m. Thursday evening. Not too busy, cozy.

I arrived on Tuesday evening at 8:36 PM to eat unlimited spare ribs. After all, their website states that they are open until 10 PM. Well, definitely not; the kitchen is already closed and I can only get bar snacks... The elevator is broken, so I have to climb a lot of stairs. Nowhere on their website does it mention the kitchen closing time. Anyway, a huge disappointment.

I've been here several times, 5 times in total, and it remains really nice. The food is especially tasty, including the spareribs, which are my favorite here at De Beren; nice and tender, really super delicious. However, I just wanted to mention that you should first ask if it's safe to walk someone to a table. Because I have COPD, and this was disastrous for me. I managed it, but I did feel a bit breathless for a moment. So I just wanted to mention that. You could also ask if you would prefer the stairs or the elevator. That way, people can prepare for this and tell you whether they can take the stairs or the elevator. But otherwise, I give this place a 10.

The surrounding area isn't exactly attractive, but once inside you don't notice that anymore and you are immersed in the atmosphere of a Beren restaurant. The colors create a relaxed atmosphere. I was there late this morning and there were no children until about 1:00 PM. That makes a difference too. The service was quick and friendly. The food was good. In short, good! The only downside: the fixed benches are placed a bit too close to the tables.

Had dinner there again recently before visiting the cinema. There is actually always something tasty on the menu. Reasonably priced. And they pay attention when you ask for a quiet spot.

I have been going here regularly for quite some time, following a cinema visit with a friend. Sometimes it is a bit less enjoyable because a dish is disappointing in terms of taste, but that is mainly a matter of personal preference. Generally, I am always satisfied; the service is prompt and friendly. That was the case yesterday as well. However: yesterday we had a shared garlic prawn starter and, for the first time, the spare ribs as a main course. Unfortunately, after a few hours, we both suffered terribly from stomach cramps and more. It is clear that this must be due to the food, as we ate the same thing and it cannot be such a coincidence that we both suddenly developed a stomach flu at the same time. We had a nasty, long night; a shame and painful.

We had lunch and dinner there. Both were fine. Friendly service.

We made a reservation shortly in advance. This worked out fine. We arrived and were allowed to choose a table. We sat outside, which was lovely, thanks to the many parasols available there. The staff was very friendly and the service was quick. Overall, we simply had a delicious meal.

Just De Beren....nice, big, good, and affordable, although prices here have also risen in recent months. The service was top-notch, but just a little too quick with taking orders, clearing tables, and serving. Give the customer a bit more time.

We had a delicious meal at De Beren Schiedam. The tournedos was perfectly prepared: nice and tender and full of flavor. The burger menu for the children was also perfect and the children were very happy. The waitstaff was friendly and the service was excellent. We will definitely come back again. Highly recommended!

We spontaneously visited at the end of July 2025 during the week and easily got a table for four. I think the location is really cool, and the food was delicious. The selection was good, as was the value for money. The service was quite quick and friendly. We'd gladly come again. 👍🏻

Beautiful restaurant, very friendly staff, great food. We had a package for a children's party and it was arranged perfectly. The indoor play area was also a big hit. Definitely recommended!

Great atmosphere and delicious food

We dined here with eight people for a birthday, but unfortunately, it was a major disappointment. The service was very poor. It took a long time for our order to be taken, for the dishes to be served, and for the table to be cleared. We ended up sitting at the table for almost three hours. Moreover, the two children at the table were forgotten; their children's menus didn't arrive until about an hour and a half later. The biggest problem was the carpaccio. Twice we were served a carpaccio that had turned yellow and did not look fresh. After sending it back, we received a third carpaccio that was a beautiful red color and smelled good. Apologies were offered, but subsequently, two different employees came to explain that it was due to the lighting and that the carpaccio was fresh that day. We found that very unprofessional, especially after the apologies had already been offered. Just because something is fresh that day does not automatically mean that a dish looks good or has been handled well. It is a real shame that a birthday had to turn out this way. Due to the poor service, the long waiting times, and the way our complaint was handled, we will unfortunately not be returning here.

There were few visitors, so there was no buzz that enhances the atmosphere.

My group was a bit boisterous. Nobody made a problem of that. The staff are incredibly friendly, helpful, and the food is top-notch!

Upon arrival, there is nothing to complain about. Friendly welcome. It is a shame, however, that once we had finished our meal and ordered an extra portion of fries, three people came by to ask if we were finished. It felt like they were in a rush. Furthermore, a family member ordered a strawberry crumble, which they subsequently burned their fingers on. It was not indicated that the small plate was not to be touched. Despite this, the food is tasty. Normally I would have given 3 stars. But since it was very hot, I am giving it 4 with the benefit of the doubt.

It is a nice restaurant in itself, the food was tasty, but, even though we are used to spicy food, some items were spicy in such a way that you get tired of them quite quickly, which is a shame because they are nice dishes. It is also a large space and the place was full, making it very noisy.

The pork tenderloin satay was nice and tender, but the sauce had curdled and the meal was back up for both my dad and me after 2 hours, something to do with TV Kantine ft. Guus Meeuwis.

Always very good food and a cozy place. Nice indoor playground. It's a shame that parking is so expensive. Just grab a quick bite and you've easily spent €6.

With 6 adults and 4 children, we reserved a table upstairs by the play area and had another delicious meal. The children can sprinkle their pancakes and choose fun ice creams. The rest of the food was delicious, especially the satay with peanut sauce, which is a favorite! The service was attentive, and when we asked if the children could be served first, this was arranged by a friendly chef! We come here every year because it is definitely our favorite restaurant for a family outing, with a nice play area for the children.

I read so many bad reviews about the staff, but the opposite was proven on a busy Saturday evening. We were helped in a super friendly manner. The atmosphere, food, and staff were all top-notch!

My tournedos was certainly not 200 grams. I think 120 at most, and moreover, well-done instead of medium rare. After complaining, I did receive a new one, including the garnish, so it was resolved well, but this shouldn't leave the kitchen, right?

Only had coffee, too early for the movie at Pathé.

We had High Tea with several girls. The food was tasty, but not very plentiful, and the rolls felt a bit like they were homemade. The staff didn't come out to refill the teapot themselves; it's a shame having to keep asking for it. And if you mention it, you only get an "ohhhhh" in response.

Looks nice. Food is naturally very bad, just what you expect. Cold fries, half the party got their food 10 minutes ago, the rest are still waiting, burgers cold, staff a bit unfriendly. But then again, you kind of expect that at De Beren. Price reasonable.

What happened to De Beren??? The portioning is really disappointing.. The spareribs (fine in terms of taste, by the way) were 2 half ribs (8 bones), one part of which was actually the end of the rib, meaning there was even less meat on it.. A small bowl of coleslaw with mayo on the side.. so that’s 2 bites and it’s gone... Regular fries on the side.. so no choice left.. When paying, I commented on the size of the portion.. The employee honestly admitted that nowadays, unfortunately, there is no longer a choice between a 500 or a 700 gram portion, so you now get 500 grams as standard for the old 700 gram price... In short, what made Bruintje Beer famous on the Noordsingel is a thing of the past... what a shame...

We dined at De Beren tonight and unfortunately had a very disappointing experience. I ordered a 300g tenderloin medium, but was served rare. When I pointed this out, the response was without any form of apology or understanding. The staff member's attitude was indifferent and unprofessional. It then took a long time before I received a new one, while my wife and daughter had almost finished their meal. When serving the second steak, they didn't even ask if it was to our liking this time. It turned out that this one, too, was not prepared properly. The only positive point was the waiter when settling the bill, who did apologize and removed the bread rolls from the bill. However, that does not alter the fact that the overall service and experience were substandard. We will not be coming back here.

I can imagine that if you work there serving, you would be mortified when you have to serve a main course for €27.50 with two pathetic, overcooked, and dried-out pieces of spare ribs. That is really not normal! It is really bad!!!”

I found the food not as good as it used to be. Portions also seem smaller. The price is fine. But it's not what it used to be. The atmosphere is nice and the staff very friendly.

Everything took an exceptionally long time, even though it was quiet. The soup with meatballs for the kids had exactly one whole meatball. After half an hour inside, it turned out the drink order hadn't been processed through the system. They didn't even offer an apology; indifference reigned supreme. They were processing the order of customers backwards. We received the ham and cheese toastie without the ham. The menus were dirty, the chairs were rotten... I've had better restaurants.

As a vegetarian, I was surprised by the celeriac dish. I ordered it and was so disappointed. The celeriac was barely pierceable with a fork; it contained three slices of mushroom and a piece of zucchini that was completely invisible. The waiter passed it on and came out of the kitchen with a lame excuse. It's a shame the chef didn't come to the table himself and let a 16-year-old boy sort it out. Unfortunately, the idea was good; the execution less so. No more Beren for me...

The food was delicious and top-quality. The 300-gram tournedos is highly recommended, with a delicious smoky flavor. The satay was also super tender. The service was incredibly friendly and attentive. So, a solid 9 out of 10 for this restaurant. Highly recommended.

We had the three-course menu. The salmon is highly recommended, perfectly cooked, beautifully seared on the skin, and, honestly, quite a generous portion. Special compliments to the friendly service. Even when we had to tell them we had to leave in ten minutes, they gave us a friendly smile, and before we knew it, the luxurious coffee was on the table, even though it was quite busy. What a fantastic hostess.

The food was decent, but it's not what it used to be. We had to wait an hour and a half between the starter and main course, even though the tables that arrived later than us were already enjoying their main courses. When we asked about it, it was only 15 minutes, but be a good sport and just say you'd lost the receipt.

Great food! We got our food quickly! The quality was good, as usual. Spareribs, of course, and a bear burger too.

I ordered medium meat and it was served raw. When I politely confronted the employee about it, I got into an argument because she was convinced it was medium and that I was wrong. You don't have to be a meat expert to see that this was raw, let alone medium rare (which would still be acceptable). Is it so hard to apologize and try to improve my experience? We also waited an hour for our food. I later spoke to another employee about it, and apparently, it's "subjective," so I was still wrong. I've never experienced such bad service in my life. I wouldn't recommend anyone to eat here. Horrible, thanks for ruining our Christmas dinner.

What a terrible experience, now I'm done with the bear restaurants. The meat couldn't be cut, it was too busy...how much work is that?? And I have a cast on my hand. My daughter has a nut allergy and, without telling her, she didn't get any sauce with her satay...the sauce makes the dry chicken look like satay. Then I ordered salmon instead of satay, but the salmon was way too dry. All in all, a fantastic Christmas Eve...NOT. Oh yeah, no more sweet potato fries either.

Unfortunately, it was a bad experience. In two hours, we only ate the appetizer. It took so long that we went home to finish our meal.

Delicious food and friendly service

The service was excellent and polite. Unfortunately, there were six of us. Three of us had soup, which was lukewarm. We mentioned this and were told, "Yes, we hear that often, it's a shame nothing is done about it." The pork tenderloin wasn't really warm inside, and the salmon was dry. Three of us had ice cream, which arrived simultaneously, and three had tea and coffee, which didn't arrive until the ice cream had long since run out. The reason given was that this was issued by another staff member, who was busier. Not very pleasant.

They really thought along with us about food, because I don't have a stomach anymore I can't eat everything, but no problem at all if I eat with someone, very good service compliments

The Bears in Schiedam is a beautifully designed restaurant, the food is always good, the service friendly and good.

Decent place to go after work if you live or work in the neighborhood. The food is actually delicious and I really enjoy the cocktails as well. The only thing that is really off about this place is how unfriendly and borderline rude the employees are. They can’t begin to feign a smile, often struggle with serving and are just all in all not very welcoming.

Not the best dinner at De Beren. The third guest's dish arrived more than 10 minutes after the other two—not very welcoming. We asked for two mayonnaises; one arrived fairly quickly, the other was supposed to arrive later. It never arrived. The spare ribs were tender, but also very black. We reported it to the waitstaff, of course, but they took it for granted and made no attempt to make amends. We ordered dessert—and had to wait more than 20 minutes for that as well. We were seated upstairs, and hardly any staff came by.

I was here a while ago, and the price-quality ratio is truly absurd. I definitely wouldn't eat here again. The surrounding restaurants offer excellent alternatives.

The 4-course menu from the social deal was a huge disappointment. The starter was fine. The intermediate course was nothing special, with stale snacks. The schnitzel was dry, with very little sauce. The two spare ribs were a bit small. The fries were good. The ice cream afterward was average, and we drank four beers. For €85 for two people, it's not really a social deal. The service was friendly but rushed. No tip because of the food.

My wife and daughter and I went to this restaurant for dinner. My wife and I ordered a Chateau Briand, requesting it be cooked medium rare. We were offered French fries as an option. My daughter had a hamburger, which she thought was excellent. When the food arrived, the Chateau Briand was redder than red. We indicated we wanted it medium. After the waitress stated that, in her opinion, it was medium, I explained to her the core temperatures for rare, medium, and well-done. The fries turned out to be rock hard. When we pointed this out, they took note and didn't do anything about it. This wasn't the first time something went wrong, but my daughter wanted her hamburger. We'll be going to McDonald's from now on, because it wasn't worth the €110.

I'm not a fan of sauces, but here I really liked the mushroom sauce 🤤 and the guy sitting next to me 🙃

Bad customer service for people of color

I went there with my friend last month with Kruidvat coupons. I took with me Sriracha sauce because I like it spicy. When I took it to put in a small bowl, the reception guy walked pass and asked what I did (in a rough bossy way). I told him Sriracha sauce. He said that I was not allowed to bring outside food here, that was for my personal consumption. (OK, I got it, probably it's about liability for the restaurant...) So, I asked if they had chilli sauce, he said yes. So I asked for it. What I got was typical Dutch Chilli sauce that was sweet and sour, not spicy at all.. for 1 euro. Anyway, since they charged me 1 euro for that chilli sauce that I did not like, and with the tone of that reception guy.. so no tip.. (sorry for the rest of the lovely waiters/waitresses) Still have 2 Kruidvat coupons for all-you-can-eat ribs, I will go again with my friend, and that will be it. Won't be any more visits after I use all the vouchers. Just don't like the tone/attitude of that guy..

Unfortunately, you don't have to go here for the vegetarian burger, and I read in previous reviews from a few months ago that this story was also the case then. The menu says; BERENBURGER 100% beef burgers I cheddar I bacon I pickle | Berenburger sauce, vegetarian version also available. We think it's nice, a vegetarian burger, but then we get a bun with sauce, lettuce leaves, a fried vegetarian chicken schnitzel and sauce again. No cheddar and no pickle. This is not a burger, so we asked, yes this is our burger, I say it's a chicken schnitzel, no this is our burger. We explain that a vegetarian burger is a vegetarian burger and not a schnitzel. They don't have those and they can't make them either, maybe we want to choose something else then. I read that this has been going on for a long time and nothing has been done about it. Strange. Don't change it on the menu and don't tell the customer either. Also, the pornstar martini with a price of €10,- or more, I don't remember exactly. When the glass gets even smaller, that half passion fruit really doesn't fit in it anymore. Staff super friendly.

This was a good restaurant. Good food, friendly staff and you get your food on the table quickly. Cozy space, not too busy. Worth repeating.

It takes a rare combination of disinterest, haste and sub-par ingredients that can only be provided by a soulless restaurant chain to make a burger this tasteless. Burrata and sweet potato fries were not available when we arrived. And all that for these prices I think is a waste of my money. A little throwback to the “rebranding” a few years ago after which they: - changed the color scheme - gave the logo a little update - took unlimited spare ribs off the menu - jacked up all prices by 20% Oh but we did have friendly and fast staff. They did earn 2 stars for that.

Within 5 minutes of ordering, the food is already on the table. This is a shame when you want to dine a bit longer or enjoy a meal with family or friends.

Delicious food as we are used to from De Beren. The staff always makes the difference and this time too we were helped really nice and enthusiastic. We sat upstairs, nice and relaxed and not too far from the playground (ideal for kids). Parking is possible in the garage, good, but not really cheap. An evening parking costs € 12.50

Great food, the meat of the spare ribs fell off the bone. It is a nice place with a cozy atmosphere, the service is friendly. The food was sufficient, not too little, not too much. The dessert was also delicious. You can park in the parking garage for a reasonable price.
