Based on the positive reviews, we made a reservation at this restaurant. Unfortunately, the food was disappointing for us. The starter was tasty, but the main course wasn't for any of us. A shame. The restaurant did have a nice atmosphere, though.

We have been coming here for 13 years and have always had a delicious meal, with large portions. The staff is very friendly. The waiting time was quite long yesterday, especially for the first tapas dishes. Of course, we understand that cooking tapas requires a lot more work in the kitchen; we fully understand this. Franeker is an old, authentic little town. Just like the Grillerije building. Very suitable for an intimate and romantic dinner. The service is friendly and not intrusive. The food is very good and there is something for everyone. We opted for unlimited tapas and thoroughly enjoyed it. Fish, shrimp, steak, pork tenderloin, chicken, vegetarian options – the list goes on. We will definitely be back again.

What a fantastic restaurant! It has been a long time since we have had such a positive experience in a restaurant. Great service, excellent food, and it looks super atmospheric inside as well. To top it all off, our dog was very welcome in the restaurant, where they very sweetly placed a bowl of water for him. All in all, a solid 10! We will most certainly be back!

Friendly service and a nice, but busy, place. Pork belly starter was fine. The tasty grilled steak I had been looking forward to seemed, when it finally arrived after a very long wait, to be boiled rather than grilled. The weight and quality of the meat were good, but at a place called Grillerije, you expect a nice crispy brown steak instead of a grayish one that seems to have been cooked at too low a temperature and/or with too many at once. As a result, the price/quality ratio is no longer balanced.

Tasty food…sure, but really way too expensive for what you get. So, a one-time thing for us.

We had a delicious meal; the restaurant has a clear menu where everything is easy to find. Communication was very clear both before and during the visit. Parking took some getting used to, being so close to the city canal. But the three of us had a great time. You can let them know online in advance if there are any special requests, and De Grillerije will take them into account as much as possible.

I was planning to have a nice dinner recently in ❤️ Franeker. I myself am from Amersfoort. Unfortunately, it wasn't such a good day, and I don't think it was my fault. We were served by different girls, and they all gave me dirty looks, as if I had mud on my face. The owner wasn't very nice either. There was mostly a lot of bickering in the kitchen, and they weren't in a good mood. I also don't think dressing girls in dresses is such a good idea. You never know who might walk in. The food was fine, tasty, but nothing special. Maybe it's just me, or just Friesland itself.

As soon as you arrive, the building on the canal is already an eye-catcher, and when you step inside, you feel it immediately: the welcome, the atmosphere, the warmth and candlelight—exactly how you hope a restaurant feels. Normally, I wouldn't readily venture into ordering a T-bone steak in a restaurant. At home, I stand behind the Green Egg every week, so my expectations are high. Yet I took the gamble… and absolutely did not regret it. In fact, my wildest expectations were exceeded. The T-bone was exactly as it should be: a beautiful, brown crust on the outside, buttery tender on the inside, and with that perfect, characteristic grilled flavor. My wife chose the stew: deliciously tender pieces of meat in a creamy mushroom sauce. Here too, everything was prepared to perfection, soft and full of flavor. The side dishes were also really good: stewed pears, salad, and if you can choose between fries or potatoes, go for the latter—truly delicious! Even the conclusion of the evening was taken care of down to the last detail. The cappuccinos were served on a tray, accompanied by chocolate and small treats, and of course in preheated cups. 😁 The waitresses really do everything they can to make you feel comfortable. This is still a restaurant as it was meant to be. A place where attention, quality, and hospitality come together, something that very few establishments can match these days. We would love to come back here again. We told the chef this as well. Our compliments to the entire team.

Cozy restaurant with excellent dishes. It is nice that allergies are taken into account. It is also nice that they accommodate a theater performance immediately following the restaurant visit. However, the tables were very close together. Prices were reasonable for what was offered. All in all, definitely recommended.

Yesterday I celebrated my father's 89th birthday here and once again had a fantastic evening with delicious food and incredibly kind service! And as a special treat after dessert, he was surprised with birthday music, a birthday banner, and a festive plate with a delicious liqueur to round off this wonderful evening. It couldn't have been better!

Excellent food, a mixed pan with mushroom sauce and spare ribs. The last one could have been a bit more; it was just one spare rib, a bit dry on one side. But the food and side dishes were delicious. The starter and the mushroom sauce were saltier than we would have cooked ourselves, so I was a bit thirsty afterward. Highly recommended, this lovely, cozy, and super fun (Valentine's Day) atmosphere with good, attentive service.

We came up with something spontaneous, made a reservation online, and an hour later we were seated. In a word, every course was delicious and the portions were generous. The restaurant was decorated with a Valentine's Day theme. The Christmas tree with hearts was original. Every customer is treated warmly, and as they leave, they walk with them to the door to hold it open and wish everyone a good evening.

Ordered online, and we won't be doing that again. €25 for a few pieces of meat is really too expensive. With previous orders, the containers weren't generously filled, but this time it was extremely meager and lukewarm. A pear and half a tomato. It would have been better with two bags of thick fries. I'd prefer it the other way around. I politely reported this by email afterward, but never received a response. That makes the experience even more disappointing. But hey, practice makes perfect.

For a places situated in the heart of city and running for so long you would expect the food to be great but it’s below average. All the meat was dry probably cooked from morning and served in after.. drinks are 3 times more expensive than supermarket with nothing good in terms of positive to say about the experience. I will never go here again or order online. I paid 201€ for a food that was dry and over cooked and drinks that cost like you have gold in them !

A cozy restaurant, the food was delicious but took an incredibly long time, two and a half hours for the main course. We weren't allowed fries this time; the side dishes were supposedly smaller these days, but other tables did get them, and we had to pay for mayonnaise. It's all in the details. So, no tip this time... A bit of a shame, though.

Six of us dined here on Boxing Day. The Mrs. Clauses and elves did their utmost to please everyone, and they succeeded. The food was, as always, excellent, more than enough, and served nice and hot. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a pleasant evening out.

Last night we enjoyed a delicious three-course meal in this charmingly decorated, cozy restaurant. The food was excellently served, with special attention to ambiance, especially in the way our tea tray was decorated with treats and Christmas decorations. The baked potatoes and salad that accompanied our dishes were both very tasty, the portions generous without being overly large, and our desserts were a real treat. The staff were likely busy with a busy restaurant, yet they maintained a calm and attentive atmosphere.

Last night, December 20, 2025, my husband and I dined at De Grillerije. It was beautifully decorated, and the atmosphere was already very inviting. We had mentioned our short time, and they were very accommodating. We both enjoyed our meals!

Last Tuesday, I celebrated my mother's 71st birthday here, and it felt like a little culinary celebration 🎉. Delicious dishes with fresh ingredients and hospitality that spontaneously makes you smile. Sweet, attentive, and incredibly welcoming—my mother beamed, and we ate just a little too much. Definitely one to go back! 😊

We've eaten here many times, and it's always delicious. Yesterday I had the pork belly as a starter, and it was delicious. For the main course, I had the venison steak, and it was as tender as could be. For dessert, I had the warm chocolate cake. All three dishes were delicious. Tables were right next to each other, but there was plenty of privacy to chat with my companion. The service was polite and attentive. There was a long wait between courses, but that gave us time to enjoy the evening. It's okay to slow down sometimes!

If you want to dine for a long time, this is the perfect restaurant. The two of us went out for dinner and had to wait 50 minutes for our appetizer and then over an hour for our main course. This also resulted in extra parking fees. Clearing the table took a very long time; we ended up asking for the menu ourselves. The wait for dessert was also very long. The food was good, but the long waits were very frustrating. We spent over three hours there.

Simply too expensive for what you get. A simple example: a bottle of Hertog Jan for 5 euros, seriously? That's 120 euros per crate, a good profit, I'd say. You'd at least expect a freshly rinsed glass with the second beer, but that's asking too much. Just like a little bread with the appetizer. Or a glass of tap water with the (also expensive) wine. No, none of that is included. Too bad, this way it's just not quite right.

On September 25th, we celebrated our 45th wedding anniversary. We took a day trip to Friesland from South Holland. We wanted to enjoy a delicious meal together at De Grillerije. We succeeded. Yes, nice steakhouse, but when I asked for something, I didn't get it. I had to ask twice and it still wasn't ready for me. I would have added some more vegetables, salad isn't an option for me.

We arrived a bit early, so the restaurant was still empty, with many "reserved" signs on the tables. The restaurant is cozy. With the exception of the hostess, the staff is very young (and inexperienced). The food was okay, but certainly not exceptional.

Dinner for five people on September 13th. The restaurant is beautiful and nicely decorated, and the service is attentive. The table was overflowing with unnecessary items like a mushroom, a hedgehog, and large vases. We were soon asked if we'd like a sandwich with spreads. That was fine. We received two plates filled with squares of bread and some witch's cheese, herb butter, tapenade, and carrot chips. The bread tasted a bit bitter. The bread wasn't on the house, but we were charged €10 per plate. After our drinks were ordered, it took 15 minutes before we received our menu. The menu was large and clearly presented. However, €32.50 for a 250-gram ribeye is really overpriced. We received three mixed grills, one stroganoff dish, and a portion of spare ribs. The food took a very long time to arrive, over 60 minutes. The restaurant was also busy. The food itself was of mediocre quality. The spareribs were pre-cooked, dry, and looked gray. A sauce was spread over them to give them some flavor. 1/5 Mixed grill with steak, pork tenderloin, chicken, and spareribs. Everything tasted good, but the pork tenderloin and chicken were cooked too dry. The steak was medium-rare; we won't mention the spareribs anymore. 2/5 Stroganoff pot: plenty of meat, cooked too medium/medium-well, and no consideration was given to the remaining cooking time in the sauce. The sauce was good for flavor, lots of vegetables. 2.5/5 The fries and salad were fine. The fried potatoes were overcooked and hard. We didn't order dessert, partly due to the long wait. When we paid, there was a €5 beer that we didn't drink. Conclusion: Nicely decorated restaurant, but long waits for the food, and the price was too high for the quality of the food. Friendly but inexperienced service, it does look well-maintained. But we'll skip this one from now on when we're in Franeker.
