Restaurant El Caballo in Lage Zijde

The four of us went for dinner today. Surprisingly, for a Saturday evening, we were the only ones there (between 6:45 and 8:30 PM). We had a delicious meal. The waiter was a bit curt at first and seemed a bit distant, but after a quick chat, that completely disappeared and he became very friendly. It was cold in the restaurant, though.

Had a wonderful meal with my partner tonight. Relaxed atmosphere, friendly staff. Good quality food, definitely worth going back.

They have really delicious spare ribs here! After reading the reviews, we were skeptical and had low expectations, but the food was absolutely delicious. The spare ribs with garlic marinade are highly recommended. They're 10x better than at De Beren. The host was also welcoming and friendly. If I'm ever near Alphen aan de Rijn again, I'll definitely be back. My tip: go on a Sunday evening; it's nice and quiet then, and you'll have the best value for money spare ribs in the Netherlands, with a good piece of ribs on your plate every 20 minutes.

I ate here with my girlfriend on Thursday night. It was empty, except for one table. I was initially worried that wouldn't be a good sign, but the food was delicious! And there was plenty of it. The decor is also fantastic, very cozy. Hopefully it'll be a bit busier next time; that would make it even more inviting. Maybe sometime on a weekend 😊

What a terrible experience. Ordered online, but it didn't go through. The service was unfriendly. Then we paid 50 euros for very poor quality spareribs. We threw half of them away.

The recent reviews are unfortunately right. We were with a somewhat larger group and had been called in advance about our preferences. That was encouraging, but on the evening itself, we ended up waiting three hours for our food. In the meantime, we saw people come in after we ordered, and they received their food before we saw anything. The only server was also busy and told us that he had also noticed the chaos in the past two weeks he had been working there. The food was also very subpar. The spare ribs weren't very tender, and the salmon was downright disgusting. There were no spices on the food. Everything was doused in sauce, which indicates a chef who seems to lack confidence. The restaurant was beautifully decorated, and the server really tried his best, but it was simply not good. The icing on the cake was that we received our food at 9:30 (unlimited spare ribs), with our second order arriving at 10:00. When we asked for a discount, the chef even felt the need to tell us he'd be open longer for us. It was very upsetting to hear that after leaving us without food for three hours.

The spareribs are incredibly tasty and after 6+ years of coming here it hasn't changed a bit, the ambiance, atmosphere and experience is lively and pure. The staff, the owner (and the small upcoming owner) give a positive atmospheric twist to the experience that you want to come back! Toppers!

Came with a group to eat, there were not enough beers and the tap was empty within an hour. We had reserved a week in advance so enough could have been bought. Spareribs were on the table within 10 minutes of ordering, this makes you wonder how fresh these are prepared for a group of 15.

Tasty spare ribs and good service

Unfortunately, it was not how I like to experience a dinner with a group. We had made a reservation well in advance. Despite the fact that the restaurant was not full, they had the greatest difficulty in serving us. The supply of drinks in particular left much to be desired and was quite disappointing. We indicated several times that drinks could be served more often and more, then they could also earn some money. But unfortunately they missed that opportunity in the beginning. The spare ribs were also not great in my opinion. The first was anything but cooked, the second was reasonable and the third not at all. The taste was good. But I always expect them to be cooked when I go to a restaurant. It's a shame, because this place has so much potential. If you wanted to, you could have great sales, reviews and happy guests here. I don't think I'll go back here again.

In de 33 jaar dat ik in Alphen aan Rijn woon, kom ik met tussenpozen in dit restaurant. Waar in het verleden je op een vrijdagavond moest reserveren om een tafeltje te krijgen, zit je nu met drie tafels met gasten. Bediening doet zijn best maar mist de skills om vlot met drinken te komen dan wel de geëigende momenten te kiezen om even vast te stellen of kan worden afgeruimd. Het eten zelf was goed. Lekker vlees met een saus die ook vers was bereid. Hierover niets te klagen. Wel aan het eind espresso uit theeglazen. Hierdoor was de espresso snel koud. Achtergrondmuziek was in het begin prima (lekkere Spaanstalige muziek op aangenaam niveau) maar werd op een gegeven moment wel hard. Aan het eind van ons bezoek tijdens de koffie werd de muziek ook stopgezet. Waarschijnlijk een teken dat wij weg moesten. Overall oordeel, hier moet wat gebeuren op het gebied van hospitality.

You get screwed here where you sit! Order a bottle of wine and you just get a carafe of house wine but you pay even more than a bottle! A glass of wine is less than 5 euros but a carafe is suddenly €30, the main course was also €3 more than on the menu .. certainly €30 euros too much! We will never go here again! Terrible!! Never experienced such a worthless thing. Firstly, we walked in and there was no one in sight. Finally a child helped us find somewhere to sit. It was stone cold, the heater was not on. You just had to sit with your coat on. Then we wanted to share 1 sparib menu together, first the order was taken, then the owner came to us very hostile. That we couldn't share it and that it would be too little, he preferred that we each take our own menu, then he walked out the door very irritated and angry... suddenly 8 minutes later the food was already on the table. Didn't taste fresh. Seemed like it had been reheated, also burnt pieces and more bone than meat. We would have preferred to leave immediately. The owner was so aggressive and customer unfriendly. Aan de taalfouten in de menukaart is al te zien dat er geen enkele Argentijn, of Zuid-Amerikaan, of andere Spaanstalige, in de bedrijfsleiding zit. Ondergetekende heeft veel tijd in Argentinië doorgebracht. Ik weet waarover ik praat. We hadden de reservering om half zeven en we waren er om half zeven. Het duurde een eeuwigheid voor we de bestelde wijn geserveerd kregen. We hadden de wijn al bijna op toen we konden bestellen. Mijn partner is geen grote eter, dus we bestelden één voorgerecht (Chorizos a la Mexicana) voor ons tweeën. Voor mijn partner als hoofdgerecht de Trocitos de Pollo. Voor mij de Bife de Lomo a la Pimienta. Toen de Chorizos werden geserveerd kwam tegelijk de Trocitos de Pollo. Maar die waren het hoofdgerecht voor mijn partner. Zij heeft ze gegeten, maar ik had nog steeds niets. Dat betekent dat we 2 uur binnen waren en ik slechts één worstje had gegeten. Daarover geklaagd (in niet miskenbare bewoordingen) bij de man die zich later bekendmaakte als de eigenaar. Hij zei daardoor beledigd te zijn en te zorgen dat ons hoofdgerecht nu snel zou komen. Toen dat ook niet lukte heb ik geld op tafel gelegd en heb m'n jas aangetrokken en zijn we de deur uit gelopen. Toen kwam de eigenaar met z'n vrouw ons buiten achterna. Zij schreeuwend als een viswijf en hij bedreigend. Om de zaak te sussen heb ik hem nog €10 gegeven. Dat leek hem tevreden te stellen. We zijn weggegaan en hebben ons uiteraard voorgenomen hier nooit (NOOIT) meer terug te komen. Ik ben in El Caballo een jaar of vijftien gelen geweest en toen was er geen probleem. I don't often post reviews, but when it's this bad I have to. The service was really tear-jerkingly slow. There was 1 waiter, 1 cook and I think the owner in a full restaurant. The waiter really did his best, but after sitting there for more than 3 hours we only had 2 dishes and we didn't wait anymore for the extra spare ribs that had been ordered. The ordered 250 gram steak was certainly not 250 grams and was really splatted on the plate and really swimming in the sauce. There was a very large group of guests who were always served and food was regularly sent out for delivery. Then don't accept delivery orders, but make sure that people in your restaurant receive their food reasonably on time. If it takes that long, offer, for example, that you get 1 deankje for free, but even an apology was not possible. This was definitely the last time we ate here.

Delicious takeaway including bife de lomo a la piment, bife de loma con mushrooms & spareribs with fries & salad. Super soft & very tasty. The cook was alone (service was missing) and cooked and served. Despite that, he walked outside with me (offered himself) to take the order to the car where my husband was waiting. Very friendly & attentive. Also received bread. Excellent service & delicious food: highly recommended!

It was so cold in the restaurant that we ate with our coats on. The service was dominant and curt. A grim atmosphere. Never again for us.

Spare ribs droog en belachelijk veel knoflook, ossehaas puntjes taai en niet doorheen te kauwen, stroganov saus uit n pakje. Het enige wat oké was, was de salade. Schandalig duur voor zulk slecht eten! We hebben nog nooit zo kort in een restaurant gezeten!!!

Verschrikkelijk duur, matig eten en ook nog opgelicht worden. 3 cola, 11 euro, voor 2 kleine kinderen een bananensplit besteld, omdat ze klein zijn, 3 en 4 jaar werd er 1 portie gedeeld. In rekening werd gebracht 1 bananensplit en 2 kinderijsjes. In totaal 18,50 euro. Ons zien ze daar nooit meer.

We had a delicious meal. Upon arrival you get a delicious type of flat bread with a tasty dip. The meat was well seasoned, fries were tasty and the salad was well filled. Went here for birthday meal. Alarm bells started ringing when we got there at 18:00 and the place was completely empty. I see why now, I got food poisoning. My guess is because they are so quiet they're using out of date food. I had the 250g beefsteak, expensive cut of meat so I guess they're reluctant to throw away if out of date. I will be informing the hygiene people at the council as I was really ill.

We ordered ribeye and unlimited spare ribs, but after 45 minutes there was still no food. There was the news that the cook had not arrived yet. He did not know that there were guests in the restaurant, even though we had made a reservation. When we wanted to leave and pay for the drinks, the chef arrived. The cook said that food could be on the table within 5 minutes. At our own request we received 2 free drinks as compensation. Unfortunately the food was very disappointing. The ribeye was prepared in such a hurry that almost all of the onion was burnt and the inside was still raw. The spareribs were mediocre.

Since I previously had a good experience in Woerden with an Argentinian, I also decided to try this one in Alphen. When we entered it was empty and there were no staff. The atmosphere was of a restaurant from 30 years ago. Dark but cozy. After shouting, I found someone at the kitchen who said that they were indeed open. A friendly man. Ordered and really couldn't fault the service. The store remained empty, only a number of collectors and a delivery person walked through the store. The menu was also from 30 years ago. But don't worry, I would sometimes like to travel in time with restaurants more often. The food was not bad, steak strips a bit tough and few ingredients in the sauce, some more peppers and mushrooms would have made the excellent sauce a little better. The taste of the meat was also good, for the price it could have been better fries fried in fresher fat. Desserts were also dated. Now I might go there again and again, but after a visit to the toilet I decided that this would be the only time. Old, broken, dirty doors, two soap dispensers that didn't work. How does the chef do that here, you wonder? The benches at the tables were also too hard and uncomfortable. Tip for the owner: renovate a bit, freshen things up and it will probably become busier again.

El Caballo was once a household name in Alphen, but that time seems to have faded. the seats in the restaurant are not very comfortable, the atmosphere that used to be there is no longer there and apparently that contributed to the taste experience. certainly not bad food, but it is no longer fantastic either. We hadden gereserveerd voor 16 personen, dus dan weet je dat er veel in korte tijd op tafel moet staan. We kregen eerst vlees, toen dat bijna op was de patat, na enele keren vragen paar kleine bordjes salade. Uiteindelijk kwam de 2e en 3e ronde spareribs weet wat sneller ,omdat de meeste andere gasten toen al weg waren. Was wel lekker, maar sprong er niet uit. The food was delicious, but the service could be better... Friendly... But if I order something as a snack before the main courses arrive, I don't expect it to arrive at the same time as the main courses. The presentation of the plates could also be improved. I missed the passion, but the food tasted great.

If you want authentic Argentinian food, this is the place for you. The meat is really good. The spareribs really don't taste as good anywhere.

Always order super tasty spare ribs here! Ordered again on October 4 and was disappointed with the 6 euros charged for a container of extra garlic sauce. While this is normally not the case...

Very cozy restaurant, Service 10/10 Atmosphere 10/10 Food 100/10 The ribs, 1000000% recommended, have not been here for 4 years and have not changed in quality and flavor. PS: THEY REPLACE YOUR RIBS WHEN THEY ARE OVER.

0 Stars... But you can't post that! Sunday evening dinner for four in the restaurant El Caballo in Alphen a/d Rijn. From my memory it is a nice restaurant with good Spareribs. Unfortunately, this has turned 180 degrees due to two incidents. The Spareribs are listed on the company's website for EU 21.50, while in the store you suddenly pay EU 4.00 more on the menu! When the waiter was politely asked about this, it suddenly turned out that the gentleman was not happy about this. He also asked why we looked at the menu...? Excuse me? We expected at least a simple explanation, after which the end of the matter would be over for us... however... To make matters worse, my dining companion also found a piece of steel sponge in his food. No compensation No compensation, nothing just a "sorry" twice... That was all. A bill of EU 150.00 for the four of us. Then again, yes. A missed opportunity for this entrepreneur who could have retained his customers with a free cup of coffee... This is the last time we eat here.

Great food and a good stay! But that was in 2019! Went again on 05/06/2022 and it was not really spectacular. Price-quality ratio poor. Not much atmosphere! Food also poorly prepared, no beautifully presented dishes, a pity, that makes it not worth repeating. Indicated what we thought of it, the excuse was that it was busy with deliveries, strange when the owner was almost constantly outside the entrance smoking and drinking a beer. Attention to the guests minimal, despite a hardworking English-speaking waitress. Too bad, the experience wasn't there.

We ordered 2x garlic spareribis. After waiting an hour and a half the order was wrong. Called to complain. Another 1 hour wait for the right order, but instead of 2 there was 1. Not good service
