Second time here and still just as good if not even better. Very tasty and authentic japanese dishes!

Everything was very good. The food was very tasty and the servers were very nice, they helped us chose what to get.

It was a pleasant surprise! I have to say it's in the top three best Japanese restaurants I've had in the Netherlands. First, let's address the negatives: the menu isn't well organized, making it difficult to order if you don't know what to order. I also encountered a situation where I wanted to order ramen (I saw it on the online menu) upon entering the restaurant, but it wasn't available. Other than that, it was excellent. You can walk in directly, and there's no line. The decor is simple, Japanese izakaya-style. They have a wide selection of alcohol. The food mainly features grilled, fried, and sashimi. There's a wide selection, with meat and fish dishes costing around 12 euros, and vegetables around 4 euros. I love seafood, so I ordered the grilled cod, which was perfectly grilled—not burnt, but with a beautiful, sweet flavor. I also ordered a dish of clams, which seemed to be cooked with sake, and had a light aroma. The grilled shiitake mushrooms were also delicious. For main, I ordered the seafood soba, which was generous with the seafood and delicious. The wait staff was very friendly and served the food quickly. The most surprising thing is that all these things together only cost a little over 40 euros. In Amsterdam, where prices are so high, this price is already very affordable.

A place that truly feels like Japan. Small but very welcoming, with incredibly kind and helpful staff. The food was excellent, with a variety of traditional dishes, some of which are hard to find elsewhere. We didn't try the sake, but the selection seemed truly extensive.

I wanna start by saying I'm reluctant in putting so little stars. The cooking is quite good. Authentic. The staff was very nice👍 the scenery enjoyable. BUT I don't know what happened in the kitchen the service was horribly slow! It took 1h to get 4 miserable dishes... It put quite a dumper on the evening. 😟

Fantastic service and even better food! Kyo is the go-to place for a lovely Japanese dinner in Amsterdam. The atmosphere is calm and welcoming, the staff are always attentive and friendly, and the quality of the dishes is consistently excellent. Fresh ingredients, beautifully presented plates, and a menu that balances traditional flavors with refined touches. For the quality and experience, the pricing feels very reasonable. Highly recommend for a relaxing and delicious night out!

Great time! The vibes are really great with the Japanese memorabilia and the food was beautifully presented. A bit pricy but worth it especially for a nice date somewhere tucked away from big busy streets. My waiter was Fábio and he was incredibly friendly and super nice! Had a great time, will be coming again

We got a bit sick from the food. We went here this past Friday and left feeling not so well later in the evening. We ordered an assortment of seafood and meat and by the evening had really painful stomach aches and bloating. Also the service was really unfriendly. It started off well when they say us early but after they seemed annoyed to answer questions about recommendations and about the food in general. This is my second time here and unfortunately may be my last. Too bad because despite all of this the flavors and environment are nice.

The Asian chef, who has been thoroughly trained by a Japanese chef, carefully prepares the food, and everything is delicious. I've lived in Amsterdam for about 10 years, but I've never found such a good-value and delicious Japanese izakaya. It's close to Central Station and right in front of the metro. The location is also great. When I visited, it was still early days after the COVID-19 easing measures were lifted, but I'm sure this restaurant will become a place that is hard to get reservations for, both for Dutch people who love Japan and for tourists. I'm rooting for you from behind the scenes.

The seasoning of the yakisoba was strangely sweet, using a lot of sugar. The white rice was long grain and not cooked well, so the white rice at the nearby Chinese restaurant was tastier.

Always delivering the best food, service amd atmosphere. Been here more than 3-4 times and i’d highly recommend every single item on the menu. You wont regret it.

Why do you write that you are open until 23.30 if you re only open till 22.00?? How are patrons supposed to plan to come?

Great place!! The food is fresh and tasty. The waitress, owner? Helped me with the selection of dishes. She knows the sakes really well, they really have several, and made me taste them to see what I liked best. I recommend this place and if I have time I will return before the end of my stay. I strongly suggest booking. Second time in two weeks. Still just as good, if not more! Thanks to Ning and the chef! Superb experience. The food is fresh, made with know-how and passion. Authentic Japanese izakaya in the centre of Amsterdam. While the rations are a bit small (so if you want to get full it will be a bit price-y), it's absolutely worth the cost. The unagi kabayaki (eel) and aburi chashu (pork belly) are insanely good!!

Excellent food, very quick service. These are small plates intended to order many and share/try. Broiled pork belly was great as was the garlic shrimp and the marinated mushrooms

We had a really great time. The food was amazing, the service friendly and accommodating. You can order many small dishes to share with family and friends. Aside from that they have some of special japanese dishes you might not have eaten yet. There is also a great collection of sake to drink alongside. You might not be able to get a table when passing by, so we recommend making a reservation. Also if you don't want to spend much money this might not be the place for you. Some dishes are expencive but they are definitaly worth it. We definitaly will eat there again when we come back to Amsterdam. Hopefully we will meet the nice waiters again. I would have liked to continue eating all evening. The food was super tasty and authentic. Friendly service who gave me very good advice about sake. The portions are rather small and not very cheap. The quality is really very good. I briefly forgot some of my food today, but that wasn't a problem and came quickly. I can recommend it to anyone who likes to eat Japanese dishes and is willing to pay a little more for very good food. :)

Worst dinner I have ever had in Amsterdam. ---------- In response to the comment received: So you're telling me that if I want to have a decent dinner, with the chance to choose at least half of the dishes on the menu and without risking not receiving just as many, I shouldn't come on a Saturday evening? Good to know… it would have been nice to be informed when we made the reservation, so we could have avoided coming and chosen another restaurant capable of at least serving us dinner. As for the number of dishes received, you are completely wrong. You say we didn’t receive 3 or 4 dishes, but in fact we only got 8 out of 20 we ordered (including two bowls of plain rice that were supposed to be side dishes for other courses we never received). Before leaving the restaurant, I even calculated the bill based on what we had received and it came to about €70 — definitely not the €120 you claim. We know perfectly well the value of money and are always happy to pay when a good or at least decent service is provided. What you offered was completely unacceptable, you ruined our evening. If I were you, I would have been ashamed to even ask for payment. We arrived at 9:15 PM with a reservation and were seated at 9:30 PM because no tables were available. Then you told us to order quickly because the kitchen would close at 10 PM. At 9:40 PM, you took our order, and shortly after you came back saying that about a third of the dished were not available. We immediately adjusted the order with the waiter based on availability. In the end, we received only 8 out of 20 dishes ordered, and when we asked about the others, we were told the kitchen was closed and that nothing else would be served. You are the ones who don’t understand the value of money.

Absolutely appalling experience – avoid at all costs. We had booked in advance and paid a deposit, expecting a smooth evening. Instead, we were left waiting as our table wasn’t ready on time. Once seated, we were rushed to place our orders because the kitchen was about to close — through no fault of our own, as they were the ones who caused the delay. We placed our order, only to be told later that many of the dishes were no longer available. We had to scramble to choose from what was left, which was a poor selection to begin with. Then, after a long wait, only a fraction of the food we ordered ever arrived. When we asked about the missing dishes, we were told bluntly that the kitchen was closed and the rest of the food would not be coming. My husband, for example, ordered four items and only received plain white rice. No explanation, no apology. Nobody at the restaurant took responsibility or even seemed to care that none of us had a proper dinner. We were offered no compensation, and when we tried to discuss a refund for the ruined evening, the owner flat-out refused in a very uncomfortable and embarrassing exchange. This was hands down one of the worst dining experiences we’ve ever had. Unprofessional, disorganised, and disrespectful to paying customers. We left hungry and deeply disappointed. Absolutely disgraceful.

Unprofessional and disrespectful. I am really disappointed from how my friends and myself have been treated by this restaurant and its owner tonight. We have made a reservation for a table for 6 people with days in advance. When we arrived to the restaurant at the expected time (as requested, since that concerned the last round of the night starting at 21.15), we have been asked to wait 20min since the table was not ready for us. Finally seating at our table and making our order, we have been told only after other 20min that most of the food was not available. We were then forced to make a new order quickly (since the kitchen was going to close soon) and waited other time before receiving the first dishes. But it was our biggest surprise that after quite some more time, when we made questions about the dishes we were still waiting for (which concerned more than 2/3 of our expected dinner), the only answer we received from the waitress is that the kitchen was closed and we would not received any of our remaining food. Not to mention the fact that most of the food received at that point was side dishes (rice and pickles which we would not eat without the main dishes we did not receive) the waitress still wanted us to pay for the entire order made, that at that point was all cold and not even remotly what we would have ordered if we had known in advance what we would have received. We also spoke to the owner at the telephone to explain our disappointment since this was all really due to a mistake from their side, and we have been treated very bad, without ever even mentioning any apologies for what happened. Overall, our dinner was ruined, we never saw our deposit back and we had to pay for food we did not want. But what made our night even worse was the treatment received - I really regret having wasted time AND MONEY with people who don't know how to treat their customers decently. Sometimes an apology, professionalism and kindness makes a difference.

Excellent japanese with dishes beyond sushi. True favourite of japan. I loved every dish but particular bows to katayaki soba, black cod and takoyaki. Authentic and surprising flavour. I feel quality and its not my first time with those dishes. Just excellent and a must visit!

I give 5 stars because the food is so impeccably prepared, so delicious and light! This is a bit of a hidden gem tucked away in the city centre. Atmosphere is lovely, their selection of beers & sakes was amazing too! Service could be a little bit more attentive, but nothing too bad! Will definitely go back!

Amazing food, very fresh and nice people working here! One of the best Japanese restaurants in Amsterdam where I came sevearl times. The only thing is that the reservation system is not correct. On Saturday you was fully booked so the earliest was 20;45 so we came around this time. When we came it was almost empty and the kitchen was almost closing so we felt like hurrying. When I go out for dinner it is nice if the restaurant is full and cozy especially when we go out later then normal because there was no availability earlier. Hopefully you can work on this.

Delicious food here! Authentic small Japanese dishes with lots of flavor and freshly prepared. Service started a little slow and there were a few things that didn't quite go through with the ordering, but that was quickly corrected and the staff are extremely friendly and attentive. Price-quality ratio is really very good. We ordered many different dishes and drinks with 3 people and spent approximately €50 per person. The Black Cot and lacquered eggplant were really delicious! Absolutely recommended!!

I went alone, and at first I felt the service was a bit cold (considering Brazilian service). But then it got better, and I understand that we all have bad days and the servers have feelings too. But the food is good... I missed a bit more sauces or accompaniments, but the flavor was balanced and tasty.

Best Japanese restaurant in Amsterdam! The food is really good, especially the aubergine and the fried chicken. They’re a bit understaffed, so as a restaurant employee myself I appreciate them even more for the good service. So, Kyo, don’t mind the (disgusting) negative reviews and keep up the good work!

Great and tasty food, good choice, great choice of sake and other alcoholic drinks for every taste, great service and help with choosing dishes. I love the soft chairs and the warmth inside, unfortunately the chairs were without soft covering and a bit cold in the room for me. everything else is great!

If i could leave 6 stars i would. Must try here is sake and their Mushroom Shrimp pancakes!

Incredible cuisine, helpful staff, I’m going to be dreaming about this agedashi tofu! Can’t wait to bring more enthusiasts of all things Japanese to this hidden gem. It’s not Muji, but it does the job. Great date spot! Will be back <3

The food was SUPER authentic, really good, every dish reminded me of the feeling in Japan! Interior is also very cute and cozy, only thing what can improve is the music. The music was a bit too mellow and made us a bit sleepy which brought down the experience. But overall very satisfied :)

Their menu is carefully put together to give a taste of real Japanese cuisine. The dishes are not too heavy or overwhelming - they hit just the right spot. The fried dishes are surprisingly light and leave you feeling satisfied, not stuffed. I didn't come across a single dish I didn't enjoy. Not forgetting about the premium sake selection! But what really makes Kyo stand out is the friendly and genuine vibe from the staff, making the whole dining experience even more enjoyable. Highly recommend!

No doubt that the food at Kyo is tasty and good quality, but we didn’t have a nice experience. Everyone was working really hard, but the service was out of pace and unfortunate.

I live in Amsterdam and this is without a doubt one of my favorite spots in the city. The menu gives you a lot of choice and staff is always helpful in suggesting what best to try. The Miso Glazed Eggplant is truly incredible, but honestly I yet have to find a dish I did not like. Also the atmosphere is very peculiar and nice, and the selection of sake is amazing.

Wow, just wow. A very nice, quiet restaurant you should absolutely visit. We ordered sashimi and it was the best we've ever had. The dishes were very high quality and very delicious. Please see the pictures. And also the prices very very good for that high quality. If you had the time and chance then you should absolutely enjoy the dishes there.

Really nice, pretty authentic, Japanese dishes. There’s not that many Japanese restaurants in Holland that have agedashi tofu in their menu or serve the tempura complete with their dipping sauce. This place does these dishes well. The super katsu wasn’t much to my liking due to the meat being quite fatty. But as far as the taste, overall it was a great place! The okonomiyaki was 👌🏻. It’s quite pricy tho… but food was good.

Very small portions, so it was relatively pretty expensive. Seating a bit uncomfortable. Wanted to have some rice of fries on the side of our mains, but that was not an option.

Cute Japanese Gastropub just off the lively part of the Amsterdam center. Enthusiastic staff serves delicious Japanese delicacies from a menu that serves anyone's tastes and preferences. Asahi beer on draft and an endless list of premiums Sake. Absolutely recommended. No parking close, but a Metro exit just across the street.

Without a doubt the best izakaya in town. Affordable, amazing tasting food and really friendly staff. A must go to restaurant! Update after revisiting: food wasn't as great as before, portions were also definitely smaller. Used to be my #1 favourite restaurant but that has changed now.

Food presentation is definitely more than you pay for, the staff is very accommodating and nice, and the vibe is perfect for a quiet and delicious dinner. My wife and I enjoyed this place for it staff more than anything but the food was outstanding as well.

The food was good, I like the Udon and Buta kimchi dish even though the Buta kimchi was a little too salty. I wish they have more dishes with rice or noodles because after eating here for dinner we had to buy something else to eat since it is also very expensive.

We found Kyo on our trip in 2022, went back a second time this November and was not disappointed. Do yourself a favor and make reservations in advance as it is rightly very popular. They have an extensive selection of sakes, as well as Hitachino Nest brewery beer from Japan. Try the espresso stout, it's outstanding. This time around we had the Keraage Chicken, the Tempura, the Super Katsu, the days fresh Sashimi, the Goyza, grilled Black Cod. All were exceptional. There is not a dud on this menu. The staff are super helpful and very efficient. Love this place for a solid Japanese cuisine experience.

Quirky little Japanese restaurant with a large menu full of very flavourful (but small) dishes. Given the size of the dishes, it all does add up to quite a bill - but for an occasion this is a solid spot with cozy atmosphere. They also have a very extensive drinks menu, with an overwhelming amount of authentic Japanese beverages.

Kyo biedt een authentieke Japanse eetervaring die je meeneemt op een culinaire reis. De sfeer is erg meeslepend. Het eten is heerlijk en getrouw aan de Japanse keuken, maar het is belangrijk op te merken dat de prijzen aan de hogere kant kunnen zijn als je een volle maaltijd wilt. Dit komt voornamelijk door de kleine hapjes die ze serveren, die prachtig zijn gepresenteerd en zeker smaakvol, maar wel snel kunnen leiden tot een hogere rekening. Als je op zoek bent naar een bijzondere eetervaring en bereid bent om wat meer uit te geven voor authentiek Japans eten, is restaurant Kyo zeker een bezoek waard. Het is een geweldige plek om te genieten van de Japanse keuken en de sfeer.
