Best Japanese restaurant in Amsterdam!

Probably the best izakaya in Amsterdam. It is a bit pricey and the dishes start piling up with the more sake that is drank but I would say the food quality was on point as everything was tasty and the sashimi tasted very fresh, definitely would recommend for a dinner night out!

Had a very nice evening. It is a very busy restaurant in terms of acoustics, especially since we were seated at the back and it is quite crowded there. Otherwise, the atmosphere and decor are good. The service sometimes feels a bit disorganized, but the food was delicious and the accompanying sake was good too.

This place is a hidden gem. Tasty food, with many options on the menu. great choice of sake, as well as plum wines and whiskeys. Lovely service and reasonable prices. Highly recommended!

I discovered this restaurant thanks to Google, and I'm so glad I did. The Japanese cuisine is unpretentious, truly excellent, and varied. A special mention goes to the staff who welcomed me warmly and expertly guided me through the delicious dishes.

The best and most authentic Japanese cuisine I have eaten in the Netherlands so far. Everything was prepared perfectly. Just as good as in Japan. The service was very friendly. We sometimes had to wait a long time before the waitstaff took our order, but that was also because it was busy. After ordering, however, the food arrived very quickly.

Asian here so you can trust me Came here as a surprise for my birthday, the atmosphere is nice and Japan-y, but there was only 2 servers so sometimes it’s hard to get their attention) I liked the takoyaki, croquettes, tempura, eggplant miso ⭐️Highlights: Chicken Karage (could be crispier but very juicy), gyozas, Maguro tuna sashimi Chicken skewer was mid The miso cod was nice but didn’t have a miso taste -overall, would be back, but portions are small and I still felt a little hungry after lol

This restaurant's signature dish is their special gyoza. The vegetables are crisp, and the yuzu ponzu sauce is a perfect match; personally, I think it's the best gyoza I've had in the Netherlands. The steamed clams in sake are also authentically Japanese, with ginger as an accent that makes them a great accompaniment to drinks. The eel is delicious, with tender skin and no unpleasant odor, so it's definitely worth trying. The wasabi on the sashimi is properly spicy, which is great. It's izakaya quality that will satisfy even the most discerning Japanese palate. The restaurant is always crowded, so reservations are recommended.

What a wonderful experience at this restaurant on Koningsstraat. Everything was taken care of down to the last detail and incredibly flavorful. The presentation of the dishes stood out, in particular. The dessert with the scoops of ice cream and the piece of cake looked beautiful on the plate. We truly enjoyed the careful preparation and the lovely atmosphere. Highly recommended for anyone who loves authentic food.

A truly authentic izakaya, in all aspects: food, venue and staff. Expect a cozy and informal atmosphere, where you can enjoy a rich variety of tasty japanese dishes. My personal favourite is the eggplant (nasu dengaku): you don't often find that in your average asian restaurant. If you like it, you can have sake from a nice selection. The staff is friendly as one would expect in such an informal, izakaya-style restaurant ;) Definitely my favorite spot in Amsterdam.

A true izakaya experience in the heart of Amsterdam. We've been three times and we are never tired of Kyo's cuisine. The food is absolutely authentic and delicious, and they also have wide selection of sake. The atmosphere is cozy and the staff really make you comfortable. They also help you choosing the right drink for your dinner. I would always recommend Kyo, and we will come back anytime we have the chance.

Felt very authentic, food was amazing. We had yakisoba, mackarel, agedashi tofu, okonomiyaki and gyoza and everything was absolutely delicious, authentic and well executed. I would like to highlight the drinks. We had the Ramune-Vodka drink, which was stunning and the lychee and also the mikan-spritz, which were both amazing. Service was very friendly, food came out fast and the decor is beautiful. The price is slightly on the pricier side but the food was qualitatively unbeatable. We will definitely visit again

Kyo had been on my list for quite some time, but unfortunately, I wasn't really blown away by the quality of the food, the service, or the interior. To start with the service: the staff works quickly and efficiently, but a warm or personal feeling is completely lacking. Additionally, it is not exactly professional for kitchen staff to come forward twice within an hour to take a whiskey shot during working hours. The interior also leaves something to be desired. It looks dusty, with cobwebs here and there, and feels run-down in some places. Certainly in Amsterdam, there are many nicer and better-maintained izakayas to be found these days. The sheer number of menus also makes the whole thing confusing and unpleasant to order from. The food is okay, but certainly not special. You can clearly taste that a large part is not homemade, but rather bought in and frozen from a factory. As a result, it lacks freshness, character, and finesse. It is not bad, but remains far from what you hope for in a good izakaya. All in all, an experience that isn't bad, but certainly doesn't invite you to come back again.

Very moderate food! Dry, tasteless. Only the Japanese server is ok but apparently they are under staffing. Crowded place, no vibe at all.

Food is delicious, served by native japanese waiters and feels authentic. Service is friendly, helpful and prompt. Ambiance lets it down a little bit, the tables for two are very small but the tapas-like system of serving separate small dishes means that there is not that much stuff on the table at any one time. Prices for drinks are pretty steep, is 6 euro for a beer normal now? And I'll never get used to the idea that simple H2O, with or without gas, is charged at the same amount. We went in with not that much of an appetite but the meal, plus drinks, still set us back 40 euros each. Still, I don't regret spending it.

Food was great! It’s nice that you can order so many different things to try and then share. The size of every dish (except for noodles) was pretty small, so we ordered around ~6 dishes total for 2 people. Katayaki soba was our favourite and so unique!! Crunchy noodles and heart-warming broth 😋 Sashimi from yellow fish was delicious, cod is nice and super soft but not big We also tried cheesecake with ice cream. It was okay, not out favourite. It’s mostly ice cream and a bit of cheesecake. Service was a bit slow sometimes. We felt like we really needed to work to get waiter’s attention, otherwise she wouldn’t come to us.

The restaurant atmosphere is great! It feels like a transportation portal straight into Japan. I was very excited to have dinner here, but overall I hate to say it was a little disappointing. The staff was super friendly but it was a busy night and while they tried very hard the understaffing ment service was incredibly slow. For me the quality of the food wasn’t so mind blowing to make up for the long wait. I think one more staff member would have made a huge difference. At one point they forgot one of the rounds of food we ordered entirely. This can happen and wouldn’t have mattered if it the rest of the evening we hadn’t already waited so much. We received a free sake with the bill, which was very sweet. However, the whole evening just felt uncomfortable not being able to relax and just enjoy the sake and food because we constantly felt we had to try our best and get the attention of the waiters. What didn’t help was that we were seated at a table next do the door, which felt very uncomfortable because it was freezing cold and the whole evening people where walking in and out. I think it would have been better to use that area for hanging coats. Would also mean one less table to wait.

Good Asian food, but be aware that the portion sizes are inconsistent. I personally enjoyed the chicken udon, which smelled like fish 🐟

Kyo delivers one of the most authentic izakaya experiences in Amsterdam. The menu focuses on precise, well-executed classics: perfectly caramelised saikyo miso cod; Karaage juicy, golden, served with lemon and dipping sauce; homemade Gyoza; Agedashi tofu — silky, lightly fried, in dashi broth with bonito. Portions are small by design, ideal for ordering broadly. The sake list is exceptional, with knowledgeable staff who guide without pretension. The room is compact and warm, more Tokyo side street than Amsterdam centre. Prices are fair for the quality, and the overall experience is consistently strong.

We came here looking for ramen but they didn’t do it. We decided to stay anyway. The dishes we tried were tasty, albeit small. Everything is handmade though. Generous wine measures and friendly service. The scallop sashimi (Canadian St. Jacob scallop ) was not presented in its shell or with the roe. So one may doubt the genuinity of the product!! We’ll be back!

Great Izakaya experience and definitely a place to go if you re a sake enjoyer or if you want to discover japanese sake. Both food and drink menus are amazingly diverse which definitely matches the Izakaya concept : order many items to share, drink, and order again trying new pairings. And again ... I rarely saw such a diverse sake menu.

Very disappointed considering the Google rating and the rather pleasant setting. Very expensive for tiny, barely cooked portions. Two tempuras for €15, soft and not fried: they were more like tempufades. And when you order a yakitori dish, you only get one skewer, uncooked. I've rarely seen anything like it, and it's truly outrageous.

Honestly, I put 3 star because I believe service is a really important part of the experience, especially considering the prices are quite high. Even if the food is good, what truly makes a meal enjoyable is the way you’re welcomed and treated and unfortunately, that wasn’t positive at all. From the lack of greeting to the cold attitude and the absence of any explanation of the menu, the service felt unwelcoming from start to finish. It’s a shame, because good food should be matched by good hospitality.

This was unfortunately a big disappointment. The food was bland and way overpriced - €100 for 2 people to feel semi-full.

I missed the warm towels and the serving order of some things was s bit weird but otherwise it was like being in Japan again. Good food, lovely fresh tofu, good soba and gyoza. Nice salmon salad and a nice range of Sake. I'd eat here again!

The food is very delicious. There was a lot of variety on the menu. However, the prices were quite high considering the portion sizes. There is not a lot of seating, so I recommend booking a reservation ahead.

Me and my girlfriend decided last minute to go out for dinner. We were lucky that we were able to get a table. The food is really good and authentic Japanese. I've been to Japan and there is so much more besides regular gyoza and edamame and they have those wonderful dishes on their menu. We also had crispy noodles with shrimps and octopus and bean sprouts. This was my favorite dish. Their eel on the skewer was also good but you must try their eggplant with miso. The photos will speak for themselves. Service was really good. 2 ladies who were super busy but very friendly and helpful to help us with the right amount of dishes and drinks. The restaurant has a wonderful vibe as it is not too posh but very simple and warm atmosphere. I dont post a lot of 5 star reviews but this restaurant deserves it. The staff asked me if I would come back and I will be back to try more of their dishes. And I do recommend to make a reservation as you dont want to miss it out!

Very very expensive! €16 for 4 oysters tempura dish with 2 shrimp, 2 green beans and 2 asparagus €15. We left and we were still hungry, too bad the dishes were very good.

Went for something specific, which was indeed delicious, Hamachi kama. The service is friendly, attentive and fast. A little tight tables, but that's Amsterdam for you, overall a pleasant place, not too loud. It's mostly small plates, interesting to explore some less visited Japanese dishes. Nothing crazy good, but if you like to hop around restaurants for a specific dish (I do) Hamachi kama will make you happy.

I ordered tempura, takoyaki, fried udon, and salmon sashimi, along with a bottle of soda, for a total of 44 euros. The tempura was 15 euros, a slightly smaller portion, but I could tell it was freshly made, with a crispy crust and tender interior. The salmon came in three thick slices, and the fried udon was less than ten euros, but it was more than enough to fill me up. Overall, the food was generous, fresh, and delicious. The female server who greeted me was very friendly and attentive. I'll definitely be back.

It was a pleasant surprise! I have to say it's in the top three best Japanese restaurants I've had in the Netherlands. First, let's address the negatives: the menu isn't well organized, making it difficult to order if you don't know what to order. I also encountered a situation where I wanted to order ramen (I saw it on the online menu) upon entering the restaurant, but it wasn't available. Other than that, it was excellent. You can walk in directly, and there's no line. The decor is simple, Japanese izakaya-style. They have a wide selection of alcohol. The food mainly features grilled, fried, and sashimi. There's a wide selection, with meat and fish dishes costing around 12 euros, and vegetables around 4 euros. I love seafood, so I ordered the grilled cod, which was perfectly grilled—not burnt, but with a beautiful, sweet flavor. I also ordered a dish of clams, which seemed to be cooked with sake, and had a light aroma. The grilled shiitake mushrooms were also delicious. For main, I ordered the seafood soba, which was generous with the seafood and delicious. The wait staff was very friendly and served the food quickly. The most surprising thing is that all these things together only cost a little over 40 euros. In Amsterdam, where prices are so high, this price is already very affordable.

A place that truly feels like Japan. Small but very welcoming, with incredibly kind and helpful staff. The food was excellent, with a variety of traditional dishes, some of which are hard to find elsewhere. We didn't try the sake, but the selection seemed truly extensive.

I wanna start by saying I'm reluctant in putting so little stars. The cooking is quite good. Authentic. The staff was very nice👍 the scenery enjoyable. BUT I don't know what happened in the kitchen the service was horribly slow! It took 1h to get 4 miserable dishes... It put quite a dumper on the evening. 😟

Great time! The vibes are really great with the Japanese memorabilia and the food was beautifully presented. A bit pricy but worth it especially for a nice date somewhere tucked away from big busy streets. My waiter was Fábio and he was incredibly friendly and super nice! We got a bit sick from the food. We went here this past Friday and left feeling not so well later in the evening. We ordered an assortment of seafood and meat and by the evening had really painful stomach aches and bloating. Also the service was really unfriendly. It started off well when they say us early but after they seemed annoyed to answer questions about recommendations and about the food in general. This is my second time here and unfortunately may be my last. Too bad because despite all of this the flavors and environment are nice.

The Asian chef, who has been thoroughly trained by a Japanese chef, carefully prepares the food, and everything is delicious. I've lived in Amsterdam for about 10 years, but I've never found such a good-value and delicious Japanese izakaya. It's close to Central Station and right in front of the metro. The location is also great. When I visited, it was still early days after the COVID-19 easing measures were lifted, but I'm sure this restaurant will become a place that is hard to get reservations for, both for Dutch people who love Japan and for tourists. I'm rooting for you from behind the scenes.

The seasoning of the yakisoba was strangely sweet, using a lot of sugar. The white rice was long grain and not cooked well, so the white rice at the nearby Chinese restaurant was tastier.

Great place!! The food is fresh and tasty. The waitress, owner? Helped me with the selection of dishes. She knows the sakes really well, they really have several, and made me taste them to see what I liked best. I recommend this place and if I have time I will return before the end of my stay. Authentic Japanese izakaya in the centre of Amsterdam. While the rations are a bit small (so if you want to get full it will be a bit price-y), it's absolutely worth the cost. The unagi kabayaki (eel) and aburi chashu (pork belly) are insanely good!!

Excellent food, very quick service. These are small plates intended to order many and share/try. Broiled pork belly was great as was the garlic shrimp and the marinated mushrooms

We had a really great time. The food was amazing, the service friendly and accommodating. You can order many small dishes to share with family and friends. Aside from that they have some of special japanese dishes you might not have eaten yet. There is also a great collection of sake to drink alongside. You might not be able to get a table when passing by, so we recommend making a reservation. Also if you don't want to spend much money this might not be the place for you. Some dishes are expencive but they are definitaly worth it. We definitaly will eat there again when we come back to Amsterdam. Hopefully we will meet the nice waiters again. Thanks for the great time and delicious food!

I would have liked to continue eating all evening. The food was super tasty and authentic. Friendly service who gave me very good advice about sake. The portions are rather small and not very cheap. The quality is really very good. I briefly forgot some of my food today, but that wasn't a problem and came quickly. I can recommend it to anyone who likes to eat Japanese dishes and is willing to pay a little more for very good food. :)

Worst dinner I have ever had in Amsterdam. ---------- In response to the comment received: So you're telling me that if I want to have a decent dinner, with the chance to choose at least half of the dishes on the menu and without risking not receiving just as many, I shouldn't come on a Saturday evening? Good to know… it would have been nice to be informed when we made the reservation, so we could have avoided coming and chosen another restaurant capable of at least serving us dinner. As for the number of dishes received, you are completely wrong. You say we didn’t receive 3 or 4 dishes, but in fact we only got 8 out of 20 we ordered (including two bowls of plain rice that were supposed to be side dishes for other courses we never received). Before leaving the restaurant, I even calculated the bill based on what we had received and it came to about €70 — definitely not the €120 you claim. We know perfectly well the value of money and are always happy to pay when a good or at least decent service is provided. What you offered was completely unacceptable, you ruined our evening. If I were you, I would have been ashamed to even ask for payment. We arrived at 9:15 PM with a reservation and were seated at 9:30 PM because no tables were available. Then you told us to order quickly because the kitchen would close at 10 PM. At 9:40 PM, you took our order, and shortly after you came back saying that about a third of the dished were not available. We immediately adjusted the order with the waiter based on availability. In the end, we received only 8 out of 20 dishes ordered, and when we asked about the others, we were told the kitchen was closed and that nothing else would be served. You are the ones who don’t understand the value of money.

Unprofessional and disrespectful. I am really disappointed from how my friends and myself have been treated by this restaurant and its owner tonight. We have made a reservation for a table for 6 people with days in advance. When we arrived to the restaurant at the expected time (as requested, since that concerned the last round of the night starting at 21.15), we have been asked to wait 20min since the table was not ready for us. Finally seating at our table and making our order, we have been told only after other 20min that most of the food was not available. We were then forced to make a new order quickly (since the kitchen was going to close soon) and waited other time before receiving the first dishes. But it was our biggest surprise that after quite some more time, when we made questions about the dishes we were still waiting for (which concerned more than 2/3 of our expected dinner), the only answer we received from the waitress is that the kitchen was closed and we would not received any of our remaining food. Not to mention the fact that most of the food received at that point was side dishes (rice and pickles which we would not eat without the main dishes we did not receive) the waitress still wanted us to pay for the entire order made, that at that point was all cold and not even remotly what we would have ordered if we had known in advance what we would have received. We also spoke to the owner at the telephone to explain our disappointment since this was all really due to a mistake from their side, and we have been treated very bad, without ever even mentioning any apologies for what happened. Overall, our dinner was ruined, we never saw our deposit back and we had to pay for food we did not want. But what made our night even worse was the treatment received - I really regret having wasted time AND MONEY with people who don't know how to treat their customers decently. Sometimes an apology, professionalism and kindness makes a difference.

Absolutely appalling experience – avoid at all costs. We had booked in advance and paid a deposit, expecting a smooth evening. Instead, we were left waiting as our table wasn’t ready on time. Once seated, we were rushed to place our orders because the kitchen was about to close — through no fault of our own, as they were the ones who caused the delay. We placed our order, only to be told later that many of the dishes were no longer available. We had to scramble to choose from what was left, which was a poor selection to begin with. Then, after a long wait, only a fraction of the food we ordered ever arrived. When we asked about the missing dishes, we were told bluntly that the kitchen was closed and the rest of the food would not be coming. My husband, for example, ordered four items and only received plain white rice. No explanation, no apology. Nobody at the restaurant took responsibility or even seemed to care that none of us had a proper dinner. We were offered no compensation, and when we tried to discuss a refund for the ruined evening, the owner flat-out refused in a very uncomfortable and embarrassing exchange. This was hands down one of the worst dining experiences we’ve ever had. Unprofessional, disorganised, and disrespectful to paying customers. We left hungry and deeply disappointed. Absolutely disgraceful.

Excellent japanese with dishes beyond sushi. True favourite of japan. I loved every dish but particular bows to katayaki soba, black cod and takoyaki. Authentic and surprising flavour. I feel quality and its not my first time with those dishes. Just excellent and a must visit!

I give 5 stars because the food is so impeccably prepared, so delicious and light! This is a bit of a hidden gem tucked away in the city centre. Atmosphere is lovely, their selection of beers & sakes was amazing too! Service could be a little bit more attentive, but nothing too bad! Will definitely go back!

Seems nice and authentic, but very small dishes for a high price.More popular I think because it's on instagram so young"hip" people go there. But price/quality is not worth it.
