We had an absolutely incredible dinner here at Dona this week. The place is run by a very sweet couple with one as chef and one as front of house, with inspiration from their grandmas in the service. Food was very fresh, tasty and creative while honouring Portuguese traditional food. The service is attentive and personal. There is only one sitting for the evening so you can take your time, relax, enjoy the food and the company. Highly recommended and we will be back!

Me and my partner had the best experience at Dona. The food and the service were impeccable. We had the 4 course menu with the wine pairing which was excellent. The dishes were delicious but the wines were a discovery. And the desert at the end just divine! Best end of the meal. You can tell both the owners are very passionate of what they do. Last weekend, we had a delicious meal at this atmospheric restaurant. The restaurant looks cozy and homey, and you are welcomed with open arms by the friendly host. The food was fantastic; the best fish I have ever eaten. We also had a wine pairing with our meal. It matched the food incredibly well; no safe choices, but nicely daring, which gave the food an extra boost. In short, this cozy Portuguese restaurant is highly recommended!

At restaurant Dona, they understand what matters: attention. Attention to the quality and presentation of the dishes, and attention to the guest. Here, your plate of food isn't simply placed on the table; instead, the story behind the dish is told with passion for the country and culture of Portugal. And all this with a perfect balance between professionalism and friendliness. The host is super nice and takes time to chat with his guests. The whole evening runs smoothly. In short: perfect in every detail. Oh yes, and here they don't work with those terrible, customer-unfriendly shifts. You sit comfortably at ease and enjoy the entire evening.

We spotted Dona while walking around the area and were intrigued, so we booked in advance. They only do set menus. The food was good — all fish — with nice plating and a lovely ambience. Everything gives off a vibe of Portugal and grandma’s cooking. It’s a fixed menu, but you can order extra starters and cheese on the side. We’d booked well in advance for a couples’ date, but unfortunately a friend got sick and couldn’t join. The owner told us we were still expected to pay for her, since they’d done the grocery shopping for everyone. In the end they charged us extra, which I found a bit odd — especially considering we’d already spent €10 on water and over €150 on alcohol for three people . The cocktails and wine were good too, but I do find it a bit tacky to charge extra just because someone couldn’t make it.

You gain a few grandmothers who, through the skilled hands of their grandsons, reach you in the form of delicious Portuguese fish dishes, well-chosen wines, and the warmest service. The Arroz de Robalo e Marisco was out of this world, and you wished you could eat more. The men at Dona are so incredibly welcoming, and the interior is so precisely designed; this is a place where you simply want to ‘be’ to enjoy yourself." I couldn't agree more. We had a wonderful, delicious, and delightful evening!

Dona gave my boyfriend and I the best taste of Portugal in Amsterdam. The dinner experience is appropriately paced. There is no rush for the customer to leave, which together with the cozy atmosphere makes the experience very relaxing. Coming from a Portuguese background, I experienced an elevated take on the food I grew up eating and loving. On the other hand, my boyfriend who comes from a non-Portuguese background got to experience a taste of my home country. There are no complaints on the service department. The waiter is kind and accommodating. In my opinion, the dinner is reasonably priced, taking into account the intimate experience, the delightful food, and the amazing service provided. Recommendations: Definitely choose the wine pairing, it brings the meal to a different level! Out of the aperitivos, I would say the bread is a must. Last, but not least, the Chef knows what he is doing. The food is going to amaze you. So, do not worry about not having different food options. Instead, go into the dinner experience looking forward to discover something new - and loving it!

The service was brilliant and extremely intimate due to the cozy limited space. The food was delectable. Truly the best Portuguese food I have had in Amsterdam. Recommend the wine pairing. They fill your wine cup for each meal with a wine to pair with the food and tell you all about the wine. It was a great additional to our meal that elevated the evening and the dish.

Run by partners Sjors and Diogo, this is clearly a labour of love, and it absolutely shows in every detail. From the moment you walk in, you are welcomed warmly and genuinely. Sjors is an exceptional host who passionately talks you through the dishes, their Portuguese origins, and the wines with real enthusiasm and knowledge. It feels personal, authentic, and never forced. The food itself is fantastic: honest, authentic Portuguese cuisine prepared with great care by Chef Diogo. Everything feels thoughtfully composed and true to its roots. The restaurant works with a set menu, which adds to the experience and allows you to simply sit back and trust the kitchen. One thing we particularly appreciated is that DONA only works with one seating per evening. No rushed service, no feeling that someone is waiting for your table; just the opportunity to fully relax, take your time, and enjoy the evening at your own pace. A wonderfully relaxed dining experience with fantastic food, genuine hospitality, and a lot of heart. We left already looking forward to coming back.

The best place we ate at this year in Amsterdam! Run by a Dutch / Portugese couple, cooking from grandma's recipe book. Original Portugese cuisine, executed to perfection. Everything fresh, everything perfect. Very cozy ambiance. The host is very friendly, enthousiastic, and knowledgable. Option to eat outside when the weather is good. Very good wine list. Very affordable. At this price point, this place is unbeatable in Amsterdam. Well accessible (no stairs or steps). Can be noisy, but worth it.

One of the best service I had in a restaurant in Amsterdam! Super delicious portugese food, all inspired by the grandmas of the owners. Portions are very fulfilling, I left fully stuffed after the 4-course meal. (We got fire cooked chorizo, 4 course meal, 1glass of sparkling wine+ 1 bootle of wine + glass of port = 100€ pp. ) Wine recommendation we got was also very good. Highly recommended!

Expectations were already high, not only because it had been recommended by several friends, but also because of everything we had heard. Even so, our visit to DONA managed to surpass them. The atmosphere is incredible: a beautiful space, very well decorated and with attention to every detail; even the bathrooms are absolutely charming. The service was impeccable: friendly, attentive, and always present in just the right measure. And then there's the food… simply divine. We were immediately won over by the starters: warm bread, olive oil, and olives to begin with, and some black pudding croquettes that are, without a doubt, the best I've ever eaten. Courtesy of the chef, some toasts with octopus escabeche arrived at the table, full of flavor and freshness. We then moved on to the menu, which varies according to the season. We started with a fish and seafood cream soup, with a light spicy touch that made all the difference, absolutely wonderful. Then came a gratinéed cod, full of detail and flavor. To finish the main courses, pork cheeks with chestnuts, super tender and comforting. We finished with a delicious encharcada (a traditional Portuguese dessert) and a fine Port wine. An experience to repeat, without a doubt. Thank you, Diogo and Sjors, we hope to return very soon.

Amazing restaurant, amazing cuisine and amazing service ! One of the few restaurants in Amsterdam I’m looking forward to go back to! Sjors is great at explaining the dishes and passing on his passion about Portuguese cuisine and roots. The meals cooked by Diogo are perfect and very delicate. Portions are not too small not too big and we were able to fully enjoy all the flavors. The atmosphere is very cozy, few tables so you really get the « family vibes » and it’s not too noisy. The pastel de nata and the candle for my birthday were just the cherry on top ! Thank you !

New favorite spot in town! Usually, only a dish or two truly stands out, but at Dona, every single plate was a star. The food has that comforting, homemade Portuguese touch, and each dish is thoughtfully paired with excellent Portuguese wines. Eu amei tudo! The restaurant has a great atmosphere, fantastic authentic food (every course was delicious), and a wonderfully original wine list (I'm hoping for more Portuguese wines in other restaurants in Amsterdam). And a highlight is the service: Sjors is a truly fantastic host, smart, funny, and engaging. For example: the pastels de bacalhau, which I was given a special mention when I told her my 5-year-old daughter loves them too. I'll definitely be back!

The moment we walked in we where made to feel at home. This really is a fantastic place run by the most fabulous couple. I wish I could keep it a secret but it is too good not to share.

A small, atmospheric spot with an authentic Portuguese feel. The bacalhau was creamy and well-salted, just as it should be, and the piri-piri chicken had a surprisingly rich layer of flavor. The Vinho Verde paired perfectly with the dishes. The service is relaxed, warm, and unhurried. Very friendly and genuine.

They started off really strong with their amuses which hightened our expectations greatly. And hooray, they delivered throughout all courses :-) Also with their hospitality! A lovely little restaurant with a charming atmosphere. You eat whatever's on the menu. A set menu. And the food is good. The service is welcoming. Each course is explained in detail before serving. I don't need that. I don't need to know every ingredient, its origin, or that it's imported by the restaurant itself. It feels forced and unnecessary to me. The delicious food doesn't need it. That speaks for itself. A statement on the menu about using Portuguese ingredients and products is enough. There was a new menu. Unfortunately, no fish. And two pork dishes. That was a shame. The sausage was very good, by the way. The wine was good, but quite expensive. All in all, a delicious meal. Go for it, and good luck in the future! Oh yes, a deposit is required upon reservation. Perfectly understandable.

Be sure to inform the restaurant in advance of any allergies or dietary restrictions, such as pregnancy, as this quickly can become a bit challenging. Seafood plays a significant role in Portuguese cuisine and everything here feels very fresh. The fish was is a highlight for us, along with the gazpacho starter and dessert. Overall, Dona is highly recommended for an authentic and delightful dining experience.

You can genuinely feel the love and care that Diogo and Sjors put into every detail of the food and the atmosphere. One of the most incredible aspects of Dona is that it’s fully operated by just Diogo and Sjors. They do it all—from cooking and table service to managing their online presence and website. Truly inspiring and a special place! This is a must-try for anyone in Amsterdam looking for an unforgettable dining experience. Will 100% be back when I'm back in Amsterdam.

Restaurante Dona was a beautiful surprise and for a moment time stopped. The beautiful restaurant has a very subtile non pretentious vibe, very warming and homelike and the food is absolutely delicious with an absolutely perfect wine pairing. The decor pays homage to their grandmothers, blending personal memorabilia from Portugal and the Netherlands. The food is simply delicious, paired with an amazing wine selection from the Alentejo to the Douro region. It's an experience not to be missed!

The food was genuinely great, but the service left me with a strange feeling. For some reason, the waiter focused almost entirely on my partner, barely acknowledging me throughout the meal. Even when I wanted a coffee, he only asked her and left when she said no, without giving me a chance to respond. She felt awkward too and later said she couldn’t understand why she was being singled out either. It was especially bad considering it was my birthday. To be fair he did wish me a happy birthday but it felt like if it hadn’t been for that, he might not have spoken to me at all. Also, at times, some nearby tables were being very loud, which made it hard to fully relax. Sadly, it all took away from what could have been an otherwise great experience. The waiter’s behavior might have been unintentional — I don’t know — but if it wasn't I’d be interested to understand what happened.

Dona is a fantastic restaurant that combines the cozy, homely feeling with excellent quality food. The small scale makes it a lot more intimate but no less cozy. The service ensures that you not only get your courses on time, but also know the stories behind these traditional dishes. And the food of course. Combined with the exclusive Portuguese wine (very tasty by the way), one of the best restaurants I have been to in a long time. When the menu changes I will definitely be back. If you like good food and don't like the extreme crowds of large restaurants, go here!

My partner and I went for dinner this week and we loved this place. The food is incredibly good & the atmosphere is super cozy and charming. Both owners are some of the nicest people I've had the chance to talk to also! 100% recommended!

An absolutely amazing experience through and through. We really enjoyed the chef’s menu and the wine, and of course pasteis de nata! We like going to restaurants and this was one of the best experiences in Amsterdam. A lot of care has been put into the food, the decor and service. I cannot recommend it enough!

I have only positive stuff to say about restaurant Dona! The food was delicious (haven't tried a better octopus), the service was excellent and the people that work there do a great job! Keep doing what you are doing guys! We will definitely come back.. obrigado:)

Muito obrigada Diogo & Sjors… We entered the restaurant and a smile filled our faces and hearts. A little corner of Portugal in Amsterdam. Ana Moura came out of the speakers with Andorinhas and we felt like we were in Portugal. The meal started with amazing Pasteís de Bacalhau and after the first bite we knew we were in the right place. You could taste the love for food and tradition in every single course and the combination of the chef and cozinheiro Diogo was enchanting with every bite. The perfect combination of traditional and modern. The entire menu was a true joy for our Portuguese hearts right up to the last bite. Obrigado por esta noite portuguesa e até breve.

Incredible food, everything had the perfect taste and balance, with beautiful story of heritage and memory behind each dish. An experience of slow dinner that I missed in these times where most restaurants only let you sit down for 90 mins, and force you to eat dish after dish without a stop. The setting is so cozy and beautiful that you want to stay even after having paid. Hats off to the two owners for making this possible!

Very cozy atmosphere (it really looks like to be in grandma’s house). Friendly staff that pay attention to details: I appreciate a lot the fact that the waiter poured a small taste of wine for both of us instead of only the person that ordered the wine. Food is also good. However do not expect the classic Portuguese restaurant, this is more fancy and fine. And crockery is very cute! Overall was a positive experience.

Very nice host, good atmosphere and super tasty food and drinks. No time slot, can sit comfortably all evening. 😄 Recommended!
