Scallywags in Wijk 28 Centrum

I’ve been coming here for years, and the food is always excellent. The staff is friendly and welcoming.

Despite the fact that the owner makes fun of the negative reviews, I am not discouraged from mentioning that this place is ridiculously expensive and provides food of mediocre quality. Two supermarket quality sandwiches stuck together with 3 mini pieces of chicken in between and an indefinable sauce slathered on top for almost ten euros. A pancake with salmon and melted cheese from which the salmon had most likely swam away. A cup of tea for four euros. Now I know that water is water, but if even the waiter said Spa Blauw and you get a bottle of water from Albert Heijn for 3.50 then you are not serious about your guests. Fortunately, I was just able to whisper “don't do that” to a couple who wanted to take our place. Luckily they followed my advice and started looking for another lunch address. And everyone should do that. In any case, because of the fact that the authors of negative reviews are ridiculed by the owner to the extent of being rude and insulting. Because that means your guests don't interest you one bit.

Rarely have you been insulted in such an unfriendly and harsh manner because you have a dog. Dogs were said to be unwelcome. You have to accept that, of course, but you can also communicate it to potential guests in a more friendly way. In any case, that's not the fine English way! It's a shame, because the scones looked good and the area is also attractive. Addition: Anyone who reacts unreflectively to criticism in the hospitality or service industry (see restaurant reaction) will ultimately expose themselves and should perhaps reconsider their career choice. There are enough industries in which there is no contact with guests. Fortunately, after reading the reviews and reactions, customers have the power to decide for themselves whether or not they want to visit this restaurant and subject themselves to the host's verbal aberrations.

Very good scones, indeed! But the service and atmosphere was a bit chaotic (at least outside, which maybe was a mistake, as inside looked a lot cozier and more relaxed). Also, when I went in to pay, there was a mistake in my order with 2 coffees I didn't order, and it took a while to convince the staff that that wasn't my order. It was sorted out in the end, but I felt uncomfortable with how stubborn and insistent they were.

Lovely place with delicious food. What i like the most was their service, i was having some headache, and it was busy so we asked to sit somewhere else, they gladly accomodate us, later the owner came to offer what i believe was the best table, i was very touched by this and his kindness. Thank you so much!

We went here on a whim today, and didn’t really know what to expect. But we were very pleasantly surprised! The atmosphere was nice, the service very friendly and timely and the food was GREAT! I never had crumpets before but now I don’t think I can live without! My husband ordered an omelette and it was also delicious, and I don’t even like omelettes! Highly recommended.

When I said I didn’t like my chai latte because it was too much milk for me - which was not a comment but I just didn’t expect it to be that milky and I don’t like milk - this guy (older guy with beard) thought it was necessary to mansplain to me that there are children starving because lack of food. 😹😹 Sir please. You don’t know me at all. Also the lady serving me could not even smile. The only nice guy was the guy making the drinks. When I asked for some extra cream the lady said: you want more??!! (Yeah so?!) The clotted cream was just whipped cream. Scallywag used to be much better when they were located in the Wagenstraat. Update: the owner has some serious issues, oh my goodness. I read the other ‘bad’ reviews and the way he reacts… well well well. Imagine him being your boss. I now understand why the lady serving my scone wasn’t smiling. I didn’t wrote that the chai latte wasn’t good, I wrote that I don’t like it if my drinks are too milky. Nothing wrong with that. And so what if I ordered another drink? But he IS right about one thing: my hoitee toitee attitude 🤣🤣😁😁 Good luck with the business! 🍀

We went to Scallywags for lunch. Nice special decor. Super friendly and helpful staff. My English breakfast was tasty. Definitely worth repeating.

Wow what happened here? This used to be one of our favorite places in Den Haag, partly because of the nice waiters and the very friendly owner. But today the service was disappointing. We also didnt see the owner, so maybe something changed there. We were sitting for quite some time already waiting to be served, when finally someone came up to us. No friendly greeting, but just straight up: “did you order?”. After he learned that we didn’t, he walked away. Luckily a nice colleague came back a little later. When you want to pay, you have to stand in line at the cash register, which is positioned next to the place where they prepare some of the food, and also right in the path of the waiters. So yes, I understand I was blocking the way, but it’s hard not to with the current set up. And the way I was asked to stand here, then there, and then here again, and every time more grumpily, made me feel like a nuisance. Then I come here to see the other people’s recent reviews and the petty, childish responses of the owner…wow. No apology to be seen. That was the last straw that made me decide to leave this review. Not looking forward to the reply.

Ordered cake that was never delivered. Host very unfriendly. When I asked for the bill, he repeated 'please, please, please' three times in a very childish tone. Inappropriate unprofessional responses from the owner to the other bad reviews says it all. Better to go somewhere else where you will be treated with respect. Thanks for your quick reaction owner, you responded as expected, unprofessional. That's exactly what I mean, you confirmed it :)

The owner doesn't know how to handle the criticisms and replies by insulting you, very pathetic.

Very cute location with neat decorations and nice service, but the scone was very dry and crumbled when it was cut. Cream unfortunately only whipped cream and no clotted cream.

The overall vibe of the café was good, with beautiful design and nice details. The coffee and cake were quite average though. I expected a friendlier service from the staff. Their cold (let’s say a bit harsh) manner really took away from the experience for me, making it hard to fully enjoy my time.

Mandatory stop for those in Den Haag, clean and comfortable environment. You feel at ease, and it's really a pleasure to talk to the Chef and the staff, the cakes are worth 10+++!!! We will return again for the professionalism and quality of the pastry shop. Well done….

1,80€ extra for oat milk in my cappuccino, for a total of almost 6€. I’m sorry, but the brand of oat milk they’re using costs the same for the whole litre. I love this place very much and have come here often, but this is insane, and might be my last visit.

Very tasty coffee and the best cake in The Hague. A little expensive but the price is worth it. Unfortunately, points are deducted for toilets, which need renovation.

Yesterday afternoon we ate delicious crumpets here with a delicious cappuccino. Then had a nice glass of wine. Very nice owner Richard! Cheerful man. And very nice music inside! Really English atmosphere inside. We love that. At least not that standard. We will definitely come back more often.

If you are looking for a full English breakfast, or simply missing England, this is the place for you. They even offer a ‘full vegetarian’ which is a bonus. It has all the elements of a full English apart from the hash browns. I would also recommend the high tea- a combo of coffee or tea, a sandwich or toastie, and a delicious scone. For an extra €1.50, you can add juice which is made with 100% fresh fruit. Scallywags reminds me of a very English Mad Hatter’s tea party with deliberate mismatched of furniture and crockery that work well together to create that feel. It just leaves one question, jam or clotted cream first?

Since the moment we walked onto the premise I’ve been enchanted at their homey “gezelig” layout of the tea room, and the pride flags hanging behind the register. The staff was super friendly and diverse with a bunch of artists that work there, it was very nice to see them interacting with eachother like one big family. The scones are to dye for; not sweet and complements the cream and jam so well. I heard it’s one of the owner’s family recipe! I had an avocado chicken with mango chutney toasty and it really hit the spot. Scallywags just hit my favorites list for places in Den Haag!

We sat down for a quick bite. Choose the chicken salad. Service was quick, and an absolutely great salad was presented. Just the right size with Lots of chicken, cheese and a tasty dressing. Good juice and friendly lady serving us. The food was not good at all, we did not finish it. The aggressive "no prams, no children" was a bit of a turn off (I don't have any prams or children for the record). The owner's responses to any criticism (cue response to my review below) is just laughable. I invited my mother (who loves everything British) for a high tea here and we are most definitely coming back again. The food is deliciously home made, the sandwiches are massive and the spreads on it were so so good. For two persons the food was actually too much but you won't hear us complain, we got to take the rest home in bags provided by the staff. :-) Lastly, a big compliment to the staff who all were very sweet, welcoming and just lovely. I'm happy I've invited my mom to such a lovely place and I cannot recommend it enough!

Perfect experience! Terrace in the sun, friendly staff and delicious food/drinks. What else do you want? Inspired by English culture, really nice. Tip: you have certain menus to save money.

Ate cake and coffee. Very unfriendly staff, cakes dry, everything too expensive, it doesn't have to be anymore.

The scone was beautiful, but the cake was very disappointing. It was an extremely small piece compared to the cakes on the other table. The cake was very dry, felt like it was baked few days ago. We thought it didn't make sense to pay 6 euros just for this cake (please see the attached picture). Once we complained to the owner, he replied to us that they gave us the last remaining piece and that's why it is small. He also told us we should not compare our cake to other customers' cakes. He specifically called us "greedy" people because we complained about how our cake was so different from the others on the table. Well, I believe they should not sell something if it is not of their original quality. And every customer has the right to be treated in the same way. This was one of my favorite places to enjoy a nice breakfast tea and sandwiches. Unfortunately, I became one of the unlucky people, and we will never visit this place again.

I'm from the UK I had the full English it was small and kinda sorry. Massively overpriced. Will not visit again.

The scones and sandwiches are all delicious!! It’s like it’s so thin. It’s so thin!! Sharing the mushrooms, I can't do anything, only a few people are doing well, and I'm not doing well. 💫

The carrot cake i ordered was way too dry to even finish. We even got a very small piece of a cake compared to the other tables’ cakes. We also received poor service from the waiter. He almost kinda ignored us. At least scone was warm and kinda nice.

Nice authentic English cafe. We came for high tea. The tea was varied, large sandwiches (super tasty!!), different types of scones with jam and clotted cream as you would expect at a real English high tea and a number of types of cake. Plus point, everything is homemade as far as you can judge. Nice environment. Downside is the price. And the fact that if you want to taste everything from the scones and cakes you have to divide everything by 4. The latter is especially impractical. I personally thought the price-quality ratio was very high. 29.50 per person is expensive.

I ordered the soup of the day, being told it was a vegetable soup and received a miserable looking broth with just a few mushrooms and 4 floating spinach leaves. The scones we ordered later were slightly better but too crumbly and served with whipped cream. Not possible to pay separately

Lovely place with a very good atmosphere and well-kept decoration. Friendly and attentive staff. You have to try the crumpets! Very good! The tortillas and sandwiches are also very good! Cooked with love by Sergi. Do not miss it!

Like a hidden gem in the city center, it feels like a cozy little British cafe! Absolutely wonderful staff, great dishes and baked goods (think high tea) and the freshest Mimosa I’ve ever had. Plus the owner is the kindest man with the best head of hair that greets you at the door 💗

'Scallywags' is a real English tea room.

They discriminate against people who are alone. If you are alone you are not allowed to sit outside. The reason: " we loose business, my love", was the explanation given by the waiter. Apparently people who travel alone are not worthy of sitting on a terasse on a sunny day.

A very original and quirky decor which will no doubt add charm and authenticity for the non British visitor. For the Brit wanting a taste of home, the food is genuinely excellent and with the home made sincerity you hope to find in these places. The full English is fantastic, the sandwiches are delicious, and the cake selection with a pot of tea is a real treat! Always best to reserve, it is very popular for a reason.

I come here every now and then for a perfect break with a cup of coffee or tea and a home-made scone! I enjoy this place every time. The interior is English, cozy and full of character (just like the owner). I'm obsessed with their homemade scones and cakes!

A sweet and unique surprise! The last weekend we were just looking for something different, not the usual brunch with avocado toast… and that’s how we ended up in this place in the most beautiful center of The Hague! The location is simply surprising, the service is fast and kind and the food is the main reason to not miss a lovely breakfast, brunch or scones with tea in the afternoon! Also the pricing is very low compared to other places in the same area.

The best tearoom in The Hague, if not The Hague. The best of The Netherlands. With Richard, Jeffrey and Christine to make your visit exquisite. The cakes are scrumptious and the menu gives a rich choice of salads, sandwiches, toasties and other delicious authentic British food. And have you tried the wonderful, loving fruit cocktails? Not yet?? You'll be surprised.

I celebrated my birthday here with a high tea and absolutely everything exceeded my expectations. The food, the tea, the venue, the staff, they were all simply amazing. I recommend!

Went to Hague for a day, and while walking in the city centre, we found this gem hidden... very nice environment and the most delicious scones! The mango chicken sandwich also worths a try! Very polite and helpful staff; the lovely lady in the entrance who, I believe, is one of the owners, is also polite. Highly recommended for a relaxing yummy break.

As a person that rarely puts themselves "out there" I must confess that I have made little memorable experiences after migrating to the Netherlands one year ago. However visiting Scallywags (for now the 2nd time in two weeks) has definitely satisfied that intrinsic human craving for familiar yet memorable experiences. Firstly, the location of this establishment could not be more ideal. Nestled within the Haagsche Bluf, in the center of Den Haag, the exterior and interior ambiance of Scallywags tickles at your imagination with its stylishly mismatched furniture pieces and quirky decor, all very impressive in their own regard. Upon entering, staff are always VERY pleasant and welcoming and are happy to guide you to a table. Wait times between seating and ordering are very well handled by staff, offering guests ample time to browse the well-curated menu. Food - the main reason for visiting. The food does not disappoint. I intend to try every item on the menu at least once. The classic full English breakfast is a must for those with a healthy appetite. Thick cut bacon and perfectly cooked eggs are always a hit with me. Portion sizes are good and meals are filling. Today I had the salmon, cream cheese and avocado omelette and I swear this was the best thing I've ever had in my mouth. The flavour combinations of food on this menu truly do work! Lastly, the experience of meeting Richard, the owner has left a lasting impression on me. Richard is truly a man of class, eloquent, witty, and able to engage with customers, which makes it easy to keep on coming back. I quite enjoy listening to his stories after my meal and his personality and charm are what allow me to return to Scallywags. I definitely recommend it here so do yourselves a favor and get some food.

Hands off the best Caesar salad I've had. The atmosphere is cozy, you can tell it's a family business with the staff attentive and pleasant. Highly recommend!

What an unpleasant experience we had here. After entering, we decided not to sit down because of the crowds (one of us had a headache): the staff (perhaps even the owner) made fun of us in a very unprofessional manner. If we had thought about coming again in the future, this experience would be sufficient reason to never come again. In short, if you want to feel welcome somewhere, definitely don't go here. Update after owner's response below: The owner's answer clearly shows how extremely unprofessional this catering business is. Avoid the business: it is guaranteed that every other catering establishment will treat its guests more decently. Another recommendation: also look at the other bad reviews here on Google about this business and the answers from the owner: that's actually just funny and substantiates my point even more.

Unfriendly staff, despite “Please be polite” signs posted. Not the best atmosphere. Pretty packed. They refused to sell one scone to go which made my little son cry. P.S. I am soooo ashamed of myself. Don’t want how to live further. If serious, the way communication is done (as you all see from the reply below), only proves my points: not the best place, better to avoid it. P.S. #2: Read more reviews and replies, folks. You will not be disappointed :) it’s their style though. But if they act like that online, would you really trust them cooking for you and bringing you food?! Spitting. :)

Went for to meet up with a old friend and the atmosphere was the best! Felt very comfortable and cozy. Felt very at ease the staff was well mannered and very nice. Had a English breakfast with a fresh Ginger tea. I felt like i got my money worth for sure and everything was affordable! They art exhibition downstairs was very nice also. 🤙🏾 Keep up the good work guys, hope to be back soon!

Supergezellig Brits cafétje, ik vond het echt fantastisch dat ze crumpets op het menu hebben staan want die zie je eigenlijk bijna nergens in Nederland. Ook de omelet en de scone met frambozen bevielen goed, en de thee was lekker. Service was goed, het enige wat minder was is dat het zó druk was binnen dat het leiddingevend personeel continue ondertussen met andere tafels en klanten bezig was.

Unbedingt Scones probieren. Herrlich locker und luftig. Wurde warm serviert.

Ik vind het een geweldige zaak, met een fantastische eigenaar. Bediening altijd super vriendelijk en ik voel me altijd heel welkom. Herken ook absoluut de slechte reviews niet. Een high tea kan gewoon last minute geregeld worden, dit kan bijna nergens. Het eten is heerlijk! De saus op de sla voortreffelijk. En mijn dochter gewoon heel welkom, maar ze blijft zoals het hoort voor haar eigen veiligheid (denk aan het thee op dienbladen van de bediening) en voor andere mensen gewoon netjes op haar plek zitten. Niet iedereen zit op gillende rondrennende kinderen te wachten. Wil je dat je kind kan rondrennen en gillen, dan moet je naar de Mac gaan. I love this place!

מקום חמוד מאד שמגיש אוכל בסגנון של  five o'clock tea. סנדיביצ׳ים, סקונס וכו. אווירה אנגלית עם תמונות של הנסיכה דיאנה. מאד מוצלח.

A British experience in The Hague! With no direct reference to the Crown probably for respect to the Dutch crown, however there are very nice memories of Diana. Tea was nice and so were the scones. Will be back again!

Sir Richard heeft dit restaurant al decennia lang op verschillende plekken in de stad en wij komen er al jaren. Ik ben nog nooit teleurgesteld door het eten, de sfeer of de service. Love it

Nice warm spot to hide from the busy city. Great service and drinks, the chocolate drama lives up to its name and the Bloody Mary was just spot on. Our orders did not arrive exactly at the same time due to a small mistake with the ordering system but who cares when enjoying the ambiance and a drink. Based on the reviews it’s either hit or miss but the food, waiting staff and owner all have been nice during our visit. I guess some folks should not take themselves so serious and just enjoy the moment and appreciate some sarcasm from time to time.

Went here on a Saturday, it was completely full but luckily we had a reservation. We had the high tea and it was excellent(tasty sandwiches), we enjoyed ourselves. The staff was really kind to us :D I would recommend this place

Deze plek is heel leuk! Het is perfect voor een gezellig ontbijtje of gewoon een warm kopje koffie of een geweldige Engelse lunch. De sfeer en de warmte in het café maken de vibe helemaal compleet. Het voelt gewoon als je tweede huis. Ik had een 'Hot Chocolate Drama' bestelt. De naam past er super goed bij! Het is een warme chocolademelk met heel veel slagroom, chocoladesaus, mini marshmallows en een beetje sprinkels. Echt een aanrader! Het vult heel erg en smaak verrukkelijk! Verder had ik een scone genomen, dat viel tegen, maar waarschijnlijk zijn scones mijn ding gewoon niet. Het was een warme scone en heel mooi geserveerd. Het personeel is heel aardig, attent en er wordt goed naar je geluisterd. Ik weet dat het een Engels café is, maar ik vond het wel jammer dat het personeel niet Nederlands spreekt. Dit was een super goede ervaring en ik kom zeker weten hier nog een keer terug!
