Sometimes everything just works out. Here it was. Lovely, friendly hostesses. Delicious food. Lovely view. A real treat.

We had another delicious meal last night! The mussels were fantastically prepared, and the vegetarian option was also a hit! A great restaurant with beautifully prepared dishes in a unique location.

A lovely restaurant in a beautiful location, especially if you can sit on the terrace. The burger was very tasty, although we had to wait quite a while for it to be served.

We came across this restaurant by chance as we were looking for a place that wasn't fast food in Zaandaam, and we found this one. The food was delicious and the waitress was lovely. The prices were perhaps a bit high, as is generally the case in Amsterdam, although we found the dessert particularly expensive (€10). The rest was great! 100% recommended!

Delicious food, nice staff and a great location.

They did not accept us for lunch saying that they were fully booked on a Saturday at 14.00 (in NL) when it was clearly visible almost half of the restaurant was empty.

The artisanal cheesecake and iced coffee are the best I've ever had! I also definitely recommend the Oeufs cocotte – everything was truly fantastic!

This terrace is so beautiful on the Zaan! We sat outside in a few minutes come a waiter to help us. The staff is friendly, the place is cozy very nice for a hot day. The view is great. I really recommend going there!

After a long time visited again. They are friendly. The food was mediocre. Apparently the new chef was not there yet w e were told that there was a new menu. Will try again then.

Lovely for sitting on the terrace in the sun (of course also lovely on the Zaan but those places for the afternoon are also really recommended). Top lunch (bread is not normally tasty). Very friendly and knowledgeable staff. What a nice place!

Amazing restaurant. The food was delicious. We ordered chicken, green asparagus, and french fries. They served bread with butter alongside the asparagus – it was tasty! The staff was also very friendly, and we felt very comfortable.

Nice place and attentive service. Unfortunately, the vegetarian options are blank and disappointing (too spicy, plain, semi-raw). There are plenty of recipes available on how to create wonderful, tasty vegetarian and vegan dishes. Pity the chefs weren't making an effort to test any. 😕 At the restaurant, I expect something better than I can cook myself at home. Unfortunately, that's not the case here. Eatable but much below expectation.

What a wonderful surprise. The atmosphere is great. A warm bath when you enter. The mushroom ragout on a brioche and the gyozas with vegetables taste delicious.

Due to a previously published review in Noord Hollands Dagblad, we were a bit skeptical. However, the restaurant is surprisingly tasty as always. My gluten allergy is taken into account. Being able to eat everything with it was delicious and no complaints at all afterwards. It's a shame that a reviewer who had a bad day or perhaps an entrepreneur with 1 difficult day made me doubt a reservation. Afterwards, no need at all, a delicious meal in a relaxed atmosphere.

I have been in zaandam for about 4 months.! I have been living up the road from this place but never realised its existence. For some reason it evaded me.But then a friend of mine invited me to go for coffee after church on sunday.To cut a story short ,what a hidden gem.Beatiful coffee and interior.Had the pumpkin soup twice.I have yet to try out more from the menu but so far its a delightful place.Wonderful atmosphere.I will be back soon.

The food looked beautiful and the taste was great! However, we did find that the stew contained relatively little meat. The atmosphere in the restaurant is good, although a little more attention could have been paid to the mood lighting, at the moment spotlights have been installed on the sides with very white light, which takes away some of the heat in the room.

Really delicious food, good service. Tables are not close together and there are many plants around us, creating a very pleasant atmosphere. Ordered a delicious bottle of viognier myself, which made the bill slightly higher. But prices are certainly reasonable. What a difference with the restaurants on Dam Square! We will definitely come back!👍

This was our best meal in our time in Amsterdam by far. The location was lovely, the food was delicious and the staff were a joy. I couldn’t recommend here more highly. I had to email to book, rather than an online system, but don’t let that put you off.

The food is worth the price, especially compared to the sometimes way too overpriced foods in the heart of Amsterdam. The atmosphere is lovely, the interior is nicely decorated, and you can sit outside right next to the Vaan river with a quiet feel to it. Overall, this was our best experience during our Amsterdam trip and we will visit here again the next time! To the staff: Thank you very much for the nice evening! PS: My girlfriend had her birthday and she received a handful of the handmade chocolates for free, which were really delicious!

Nice location, great service, I had a tasty burger but not much for the real vegetarian. Can you please take the salad with ricotta off the menu, a really boring and uninspired dish.

Food was amazing, martini was the best I’ve had and the staff were so friendly and spoke brilliant English. So glad we stopped off here, highlight of our trip so far 😊

Recently had lunch with a friend. We sat on the terrace on the Zaan and that is a nice place. We were kindly helped. The food itself was fine, but in sparing quantities (soup of the day and carpaccio) and at a decent price. It wasn't that expensive when I was there before. I was planning to celebrate my birthday there in October, but unfortunately I have to cancel that now.

Very pleasant setting, under the sun, it must still be several with their terrace which offers a nice view. We have taken : A revisited sauerkraut on a toast, very very good. A mustard soup with extra croquettes. (Go for the soup, delicious!) 🤤 Accompanied by a ginger beer, a great discovery, usually they are too spicy and peppery. I recommend this place with all eyes closed, the service is very fast, the staff takes great care. 🤍

Quality ingredients, impeccable service

Absolutely stunning venue (inside and out!) - the beautiful views over the river were a perfect match to the incredible food. We had the beef tenderloin, sea bass and farm chicken… all cooked and prepared to perfection! The cherry on top was the really friendly staff, who kindly accepted to serve us despite our late arrival, close to kitchen closing time. I would definitely recommend!

This restaurant seems excellent at first glance, but it turns out to be just barely adequate. The "sauce" with the tournedos consisted of the shortening in a small bowl. Meat was cooked a little too long. The service was rushed. The dishes passed by in rapid succession. The biggest setback was when my wife went to the toilet and the waitress asked me: "Do you know what she wants to order?" Too bad, for five stars you need to dot the famous t's and cross the i's.

Despite a small lunch menu, the options are excellent and different goods, allowing all tastes to be catered for. The food is fantastic and the service excellent.

A nice friendly atmosphere and attentive and sweet service. It was not terrace weather, but the terrace on the Zaan is certainly a plus.

Surprise at the Zaan, but also a real surprise, I think the prices are extremely high, 15 euros for Chicken Tenders. I also think that if you come with a large group, this should be taken into account. Staff was extremely good, nice sweet girls! Perhaps the owner can follow this example. Strollers had to go, high chairs had to go, everything to make the guests around us comfortable. We were completely surprised after ordering again within 10 Minutes asked to leave. Because there were even more reservations, it's nice to earn 5 Meijer within 1.5 hours. Never again for me.

Achter de hekken van de Doopsgezinde kerk in Zaandam vind je echt een " Verrassing" De Verrassing aan de Zaan is een mooi restaurant met een verrassende ligging. Wij hebben hier geluncht. Alles was prima opgemaakt en de smaak en kwaliteit was uitstekend. Echt een aanrader in het Hartje van Zaandam.

We had an wonderful wedding day at Verrassing aan de Zaan. Cozy place for almost 40 guests. We had the wedding ceremonies in the church next to it, then tart en toast, en amazing dinner served by professional staff. Thank you for good care of everything, Maartje ^^

Het is een wat verborgen gelegenheid, naast de Doopsgezinde kerk. Het ligt in een soort kas met uitzicht op de Zaan. Je hoeft geen plek met een kijkje op het water, want aan de overkant staat een spuuglelijke hoge flat. Verrassing? Het bedienende, heel vriendelijke meisje vond het zelf ook afschuwelijk. We begonnen met mostardsoep van Zaanse mostard. Lekker, maar veel te sterk. Ken je dat? Dat het boven in je neus terecht komt en je de adem beneemt? Heb het idee, dat het 't laatste uit de pan was en ingekookt. Dat had wel een verdunning met bouillon kunnen gebruiken. Het volgende gerecht heeft het goed gemaakt. Eggs Norwegian, briochebrood met een pocheerd ei op gerookte zalm was heerlijk.
