We visited during our trip to Amsterdam and had a great experience! The food was absolutely delicious and definitely worth a stop if you're visiting the city. The atmosphere is also a standout, the restaurant is inside the historic Waah building on Nieuwmarkt (know for its indoor candlelit interior). Great food, good atmosphere, and such a fun place to experience while in Amsterdam. We would absolutely recommend!

It was perfect for hosting our foreign guests. Beautiful location and building. Friendly staff who actually spoke Dutch and English. Great beer. Food okay—nothing special, but nothing wrong with it. All in all, a successful evening.

Loved the vibe of this place! Inside super romantic and upscale outside was perfect for relaxing and enjoying the views! Huge umbrellas to keep you dry and shaded. Limited menu and the price is a tad high for a burger. Overall I would go again, the service was fantastic! The building and history behind it is amazing.

Honest burger, but a little under-salted and the salt grinder is broken. Excellent draft beer. Outdoor tables to enjoy the sunny days, which aren't very frequent. Cozy indoor atmosphere. Friendly and attentive staff. Good value for money.

Outrageous value for money. The food was expensive, but nothing special in terms of taste, and the portions were really small, so we left the restaurant still hungry. Probably a bit of a tourist trap; I wouldn't recommend it.

The outside tables are very nice and there is good shade. Nice place to have a drink and chill. I had a vevar sallad as well but was not very impressed. It was alright though.

We had a high wine, managed by waiter, Joey, and he was super sweet, kind and friendly. Wines and accompanying small dishes were good as well.

Café In de Waag in Amsterdam was a pleasant surprise. A charming space where the presentation of the dishes is meticulous and the food lives up to expectations, both in flavor and quality. Another positive point is the price-to-quantity ratio, which is quite balanced for Amsterdam. A pleasant and relaxed experience that ended up exceeding expectations. A good surprise and an option to consider in Amsterdam.

Group of 10 for Senior Pride. It was a blast and the staff is just top! I go there during the week, for a quiet lunch but I can recommend De Waag for any occasion! It is not often you sit in front or inside a 15th Century building!

Everything was truly top-notch. The service was impeccable, with attentive and very pleasant staff. The restaurant is beautiful, elegant, luxurious, and offers a romantic ambiance, ideal for a dinner for two or a special occasion. The prices are a bit high, but the quality of the food, the service, and the setting more than justify the cost. I highly recommend it; it's a place worth discovering!

I ordered soup and tartare—everything was absolutely delicious. The ingredients were very fresh, and everything was prepared with love. I especially loved the tartare: tender, with a perfect balance of spices. The service was pleasant, and the atmosphere was cozy. I'll be back if I'm ever in Amsterdam. I highly recommend it!

Waiter told us our group would be served in 2 consecutive rounds. One diner did not get her meal until both groups basically finished their meals. Waiter said we could not have individual bills,but then another server was able to do it. Salad served with chicken meal not made with fresh leaves, mostly bitter arrugula. Nice locale, staff friendly but quality of good average and prices not reflective of amount or quality.

It's quite unique that this is a restaurant with such a unique name. The menu, featuring shrimp ball salad and fried fish as a main course, was delicious and highly recommended. The restaurant is a blend of old and new, a wonderful experience.

I am shocked by the prices you charge. A main course that is already pricey, and then having to pay an extra approx. 15 euros if you want fries and vegetables. Bizarre! So I just ordered a salad. A large salad. 22 euros. A large salad should be enough to fill you up nicely. Unfortunately not. 10 chicory leaves, a few nuts, and 3 slices (delicious! Soft goat cheese). No bread. And why a much larger Caesar salad than the chicory salad? The service was very inconsistent. Sometimes every other minute, sometimes unreachable. P.S. the table rocks. Hugely. P.S.2: new menu in June, prices even higher?

The restaurant is very nice inside, but you have to book in advance. I only had appetizers, which weren't anything special. The portions were good, but they weren't very tasty. Still, I would visit again to try other options.

Stopped here out of convenience while we were exploring the Saturday market. Great backdrop in the castle and outside seating. Service was slow but excellent ten out of ten for friendliness and attentiveness. There were a lot of people there and staff had a hard time keeping up but made do with smiles on their faces. Food was was better than expected. Tried local Dutch fried meat balls and soup of the day was the most amazing tomato and pepper bisque I've ever had. The babaganoush came on toast which was unexpected but delicious nonetheless

Well … the service was better than the food, unfortunately I go to restaurants for the food and not the service. This is a gimmick location and a turist trap. The best thing with this place is that it is close to a good cocktail bar where I went afterwards. My recommendation, skip this place, and go directly to the bar.

Restaurant in a nice building, cozy terrace. Staff is ok, but you should still be careful that you get everything you order... The snacks were good, especially the Jopen beer.

We had a wonderful dining experience at Waag. The historic beautifully preserved medieval building made the dining experience truly special. Our waiter, Mits, was attentive, friendly, and provided excellent service throughout the meal. We chose the 4-course menu with wine pairing, and every course was delicious and thoughtfully matched with the wines. The quality of the food, the atmosphere, and the service made for a memorable evening, and we felt the price was very reasonable for the experience. Highly recommend Waag to anyone visiting Amsterdam!

We stumbled upon this place by chance, and after browsing the small market nearby, we decided to go in. However, there was a reservation for a fairly large group, so we had to eat outside. From what little we could see, it has a lovely atmosphere, lit only by candles, which I think must be one of its attractions, since it's an old castle. We went in to order, and while the menu is short, what we ate was delicious. My only suggestion would be to be a little more welcoming to customers. The service was a bit too formal, which didn't make it very pleasant. The prices are reasonable for what you get. When we were there, it was very cold, and it even rained a little. But they turned on the heating, which improved the experience. If I return, it would be to have the experience of eating inside by candlelight. I highly recommend it.

The place has a very atmospheric atmosphere, located in an old city gate, where a guillotine supposedly once stood. We had a reservation, which turned out to be unnecessary, as the waiter didn't ask for one. We were assigned a small table for four, and then I waited for a chair (actually, I think the waiter wanted me to get one myself). The food was decent. Bitterballs, eggplant ravioli, and mashed potatoes with Dutch sausage. We didn't try the croquette we ordered. The food is tasty and fresh. The main problem is the average service.

The surveying station has been renovated and boasts a fantastic atmosphere. On weekends, there are stalls and flea markets where you can conveniently buy and eat, with friendly service and delicious steaks.

It's a shame the waiter was alone to handle everything; there was a long wait. Otherwise, it was really very good, we had a very enjoyable meal.

I think the people in the kitchen do a great job. The portions are small but delicious. I also really liked the ice cream. The service is slow; the waiters don't listen well. Fortunately, experienced waiters came to the rescue; although I sent my order back twice, they brought it patiently and correctly on the third attempt. Thank you.

Wow! What a beautiful place to have a meal! In addition to candles on each table for dinner, they had chandeliers of candles overhead. The atmosphere in this historic building couldn't have been nicer. We also had a great experience with the staff and enjoyed the meal. We had the Dutch Stew which was good, but we really loved the sweet potato fries with the truffle sauce and the simple lettuce salad.

Nothing on the menu. Two measly steak tartares. The waiters had clearly had one too many herbal teas! Three trays on the floor in less than an hour! One of them even ended up on my coat. Good luck to them.

I ordered a chicken curry club sandwich. It looked absolutely perfect and tasty. Unfortunately, the bread was quite tough and dry, which was a real shame and really detracted from the sandwich itself. The service, on the other hand, was prompt and very friendly; absolute compliments for that. Hopefully, this was a one-off, because the presentation and service were otherwise fine.

Very rough and aggressive personal that needs more education, food came completely cold and was prepared not in a right way

I ate at De Waag yesterday. Because of the cold weather, sauerkraut mash with smoked sausage seemed like a good option. Everything probably came from the freezer: the mash wasn't warm and the sausage wasn't warm either and was dried out. What a shame. And on top of that, that pathetic piece of sausage costs €7.50!! So, not recommended.

My wife and I had a wonderful evening at De Waag. Good food, traditional regional cuisine. The atmosphere is unique, with medieval touches, although there are many modern touches in the dining room's decor. It was our wedding anniversary, and we were very kindly offered two glasses of champagne! A special thanks to Sophie, the very kind and charming waitress who served us and accompanied us throughout the evening, making it special!

This building, formerly a medieval city gate, with its soaring floors, classical and ornate structure, and the glow of countless real candles, creates a historically rich yet romantic and leisurely atmosphere, making it an excellent restaurant for experiencing Amsterdam's historical ambiance.

We had an amazing experience with the 3-course tasting menu with wine and beer pairings, so so so good! Our waiter Joey was fantastic, and very knowledgeable about the wine and the beers - he delivered great service all night and we didn’t want to leave!

The food was average, the salad did not seem to be very fresh (as you can tell it from the leaves) and the portions were relatively small. They do not include the french fries or salad in the main course, so you have to add them separately. The bread was also separately. In total, I would say you should go there for the atmosphere, it is very beautiful. I hope that it could be a bit cheaper, but I do understand why the price point is so high.

The food was delicious, and the portions were quite large and filling. One main course would be enough. The prices weren't low, but they were good for this place. The building was formerly a city gate. It has been used for many purposes throughout history, but as a restaurant, it has been beautifully decorated and has a great ambiance.

Reservations are recommended; it gets very crowded and busy. I arrived a little earlier than my reservation time, and the restaurant was packed. The staff were too busy to ask if I had a reservation, so I waited for over ten minutes before someone finally told me to wait a moment. I ordered the signature waag, which was okay. The toppings for the burger were more flavorful than the meat itself. The fries were so-so, and the portion was small. For dessert, I ordered a brownie, but it didn't look like a brownie at all. Overall, the restaurant had a great atmosphere, and it was also nice to stroll around outside. It's just the kind of place you'd find in a tourist area.

Had 3 group dinners here, very good food and ambience, nice staff!

Stopped by for a quick drink and a glass of wine. The service was friendly, helpful, and quick, the snacks tasted good, and at first glance, it was a very neat and cozy place. Unfortunately, the toilets were the complete opposite. Overflowing trash cans, a wet mess, a toilet seat that was completely loose, and worst of all: there were even traces of poop on the underside of the outside of the toilet bowl. What made it even more remarkable was that the cleaning schedule had already been signed off far into the future. Really very dirty, and a real shame for a restaurant that otherwise looks so cozy and tidy.

This is a tourist trap. That's it. Burgers are disgusting. Their stew is a bit a sauerkraut with half a sausage. Any side is 8 euros, on top (I'm talking french fries). Service is nice but you will be able to find way way better anywhere else. Avoid.

Went for the Cote de Bœuf not realising it was €42 pp that's €84 for beef on the bone ours had 25% fat..... The meat was lovely but I'd suggest you give it a miss....

Good evening, Visit on April 12, 2026 at 7:30 PM Disaster... Reservation not honored. Error in the orders. 20-minute delay for one of the orders. One of us was attacked with hot candle wax from the ceiling chandelier. Avoid at all costs.

Over all a total disaster of a nite. The newly hired staff of 3 days was simply not trained properly. That should be a top priority. This was my fourth time in. The others were very good. This time, they forgot to order the main dinners. She ordered the wrong size salad. A 2 hour mess... We never even ate our dinner. This is not exceptable . The soup...ice cold.....

visited this city previous week with sis in law. Although the negative comments, we both enjoyed the nice atmosphere, great food and excellent choice of many kinds of beverages. Staff was absolutely amazing, especially the beautiful waitress with high heels and ponytail that suggested the Glühwein for the both of us. it was so delicious! Shared a few laughs too. amazing experience and will for sure visit again soon when back in holland🍷❤️❤️❤️

I don't even know where to begin. I ordered a burger that cost a mere 19 euros, but paying 19 euros just for the burger is a rip-off! Then they charged another 8 euros for some fries 😂 That makes a total of 26 euros for what? My partner ordered a salad, well, she just picked at it and then left everything. We were in Amsterdam for 8 nights and ate out twice a day, and I can only say one thing: this restaurant was the most expensive and the worst we experienced. Every other restaurant within a 50-meter radius is 100 times better than this one. I'd give it 5 stars, but only for the ambiance, nothing more.

A very nice building where you can eat or just have a drink :)

The place looks beautiful and the staff are friendly but our table was in front of the open kitchen and here’s what I saw: The “chef” stirred the sauce pot with his two fingers and then put his fingers in his mouth to taste. Then we put it in another pot to stir something else. Then he wiped his finger with his apron and plated a dinner and he touched all the food with his hands and fingers to check the temperature. He made a side salad and he just grabbed all the ingredients with his bare hands and put them together. So spoon, no gloves, no washing hands, nothing.

Too crowded.... Steak was served incredibly cold. I am sure it was a plate returned by another client. Side food was missing.... Only steak and two carrots. I guess there was some wheat thing and other vegetables had to be in the plate...

We booked at this restaurant solely because of its location inside a castle, which is practically its only appeal. Everything else leaves much to be desired. The staff's attitude was unacceptable. After ordering hamburgers and a drink, which came to approximately €25 per person, one of the waiters looked at us with surprise and a clearly arrogant attitude, as if he were annoyed that we hadn't ordered more. The feeling is that they expect customers to spend a fortune just to be there, which is very unpleasant. The hamburgers were okay, but they don't justify either the price or the overall experience. Furthermore, the menu is extremely short, with very few options, which further diminishes the restaurant's appeal. In short, I absolutely do not recommend it: neither for the service nor for the food. It's a place that lives off its surroundings and image, but not for the service or the quality. That said, if anyone decides to go, it's best to book in advance, because the place is packed because of the castle, not the food.

We have ordered fish, but it taste nothing. The hamburger was not cooked wel. But the pasta was delicious.

I had the high wine with a friend and it was fantastic, even better than expected. The dishes were perfectly paired with the wines, the atmosphere was lovely, and the staff were friendly. Highly recommended.

This was one of the best places to get something to eat or just a drink. It was our last day and we wanted to see as much as we could but I would have loved to stay here longer just to enjoy the atmosphere

We booked the room on the second floor for a group of 20 ppl. The group menu was provided beforehand, including appetizers, three different kinds of main dishes to choose from, and desserts. Salads, fries, and drinks were provided as well. The beef tartare was not impressive, with the meat being so rubbery that I couldn’t chew through it. The pork belly had a high proportion of fat. The fish dish was not memorable, not tender, and had no umami; it had leek and mashed potatoes as sides. The dessert was an open apple pie, with different elements scattered on the plate: apple crumble, pie pastry, ice cream, and apple sauce. It was sweet but better than other dishes. The restaurant was really fancy in its interior design, a great option for special event celebrations. But food itself was not impressive, which might be due to the group menu chosen. Possibly other dishes not included are worth trying. The service was great, the colleagues were patient and hospitable.

After visiting Amsterdam many times, we finally went to this restaurant in the center of the New Markt. Beautiful on the outside and truly charming on the inside. High ceilings, enormous chandeliers with candles, a very welcoming atmosphere. But that's about it...unfortunately, in my opinion, the service was improvised and very slow. We ordered the typical bitterballen (good), shrimp in a spicy sauce (boiled and flavorless), and a meat tataki (a small dish but quite good). The bill, however, was a bit high given the quantity and service. You definitely pay for the restaurant's central location and its authenticity.

We ordered traditional Dutch dishes. I'm Brazilian, my partner is Dutch. His idea was to surprise me with the flavors. The experience was disappointing. We are excellent cooks and appreciate well-prepared food, from the simplest to the most sophisticated. According to him, the same dishes, if bought at the Albert Heijn supermarket, would have been tastier and with more authentic ingredients. We were honest when asked about the food by the waiter.

Such a beautiful old building… I stopped for a moment without even planning to 🙂 It looks a bit like a small castle right in the middle of the city. People walking around, taking photos, a relaxed atmosphere. I didn’t stay long, but the place has something calm and pleasant about it. A nice stop while wandering through Amsterdam.

Dining inside a 15th-century city gate was a unique and interesting experience! Waag Restaurant is Amsterdam’s oldest non-religious building, which once served as a weigh house (waag) and anatomical theatre. The candlelit interior and vaulted ceilings created a dramatic, historic setting that was hard to beat. Food was decent; the white asparagus was fresh and nicely prepared. Overall, the building itself makes the visit worthwhile. A memorable spot for the ambience!

You should definitely reserve a table in advance if you want to eat here. The style is very nice, both inside and out. Unfortunately, I can't comment on the food, as we only had drinks. But the other tables looked very tasteful, at least.

Don't go here if you're hungry, €27 for a mouthful of pork belly. Tiny portions and the quality was disappointing, I've had better pork belly from aldi. But staff are nice and it's a good atmosphere.
