Abyssinia Restaurant in Overtoomse Sluis

What a wonderful place! On the last day on my vacation in Amsterdam, I went spontaneously to this restaurant and had such an amazing final evening in the city. The waiter, Daniel, was so nice and friendly, and the food was so great. Thank you for a lovely dinner and experience!

Theft⚠️ While we were eating, someone who appeared to be a customer came in and stole our phone. We asked the staff for help during the incident, but they didn’t assist us in fact, they acted mockingly. We asked them to call the police, but they refused. They claimed there were no security cameras, which is hard to believe for any establishment in Amsterdam. The thief spoke with a waiter upon entering, which made us suspicious. We can still track the phone’s location it's now in Morocco! I absolutely do not recommend this place. It’s unsafe and irresponsible!

The food was average I can say. Service was good, nice, smiling people. The meat dish was so spicy that we could eat only half. Eating with your hands is not easy especially with that bread. General, maybe fine to try ones, but I wouldnt go again.

Well, two days ago we've been to the Café and had just original ethiopian coffee!!! It is NOT on the menu but I knew what to ask for and got the real McCoy. It was MARVELLOUS and the ladies were ever so kind to prepare it for us!! Why I do mention the preparation? Because it takes some time, patience and love to do it right and they put all the necessary ingredients into it.. :)) THANK YOU, dear ladies, it was wonderful! Please, try this kind of coffee whenever you stop by AND be patient until it is served, it'll be definitely worth your while..

Ethiopian restaurant. Despite being one, they served me wonderfully. I loved it. The dishes were gigantic and bursting with flavor. Spicy and eating with your hands is so much fun. It's worth trying. Although I have to say it was my first Ethiopian restaurant.

The food was truly delicious! My second choice is highly recommended. A banana beer to go with it, and that's it. Fantastic!

Mango beer is tasty. Enjoyed the lamb, lentils, and pumpkin. And injera is delicious, not too sour like some other places I've been. Service workers are kind and responsive. The atmosphere is very immersive. Another plus is that it's gluten free friendly. Definitely would come here again!

Everything’s perfect! I’ve never eaten African food before. But after this experience, I know I really love the food, furniture, and atmosphere. The staff is also very kind. Thank you for a comfortable time❣️ I was surprised at how sour the dough was, but when I ate it with the toppings, it was refreshingly spicy and delicious! It’s hard to find Ethiopian food in Japan, so I want to go again before I go back. If you’re good at foreign cuisine, I highly recommend it.

I loved the atmosphere, the enteriour design and the food is AMAZING! I especialy loved the white honey wine - the nectar of the gods! The staff is very polite and helpful. I wish to come back when visiting Amsterdam again.

Inattentive waiter, on the children's menu they put two dishes and he brings you a handful of poorly cooked beef, very spicy food. Very badly. Don't come back.

The atmosphere is super nice and the welcome is perfect! On the other hand, we were a little disappointed by the food, it was nothing exceptional and we expected to eat dishes that we are not used to.

Soy un autoproclamado experto en lo que respecta a la alimentación etíope y eritrea. Me encantó este restaurante! En primer lugar, está muy bien decorado. Es el restaurante más bonito en el que he estado. La comida estaba muy deliciosa. Estaba feliz y satisfecho. Lo mejor de todo es que el servicio fue increíble. Fui recibido y sentado inmediatamente y tuve una gran conversación con el anfitrión sobre la comida etíope y eritrea, nuestros antecedentes, etc. Él era muy agradable y solo me dio un poco de pena por pedir mi kitfo cocinado (😂). Cené solo y me sentí muy cómodo. No fue nada incómodo. Volveré la próxima vez que visite Amsterdam.

I am a self-proclaimed expert when it comes to Ethiopian and Eritrean food. I loved this restaurant! First of all, it is beautifully decorated. It is the prettiest restaurant I have been to. The food was very yummy. I was happy and satisfied. Best of all, the service was awesome. I was greeted and seated immediately and had a great conversation with the host about Ethiopian and Eritrean food, our backgrounds, etc. He was super nice and only gave me a little grief for ordering my kitfo cooked (😂). I dined solo and felt very comfortable. It was not awkward at all. I will be back next time I visit Amsterdam.

What a disappointment! We certainly didn't get it like the photos on the website - all those special dishes! A large plate of sludge, everything mixed together and meat was hard to find. Only the piece of chicken and ½ egg was recognizable. The 'pancake' was a cold, spongy slab that didn't allow you to pick anything up. Once but never again.

Wat een leuke en vriendelijke ervaring! Afrikaanse inrichting. Fijne rustige bediening. Eten met je handen van verschillende de leuke gerechten. Prijs/kwaliteit prima.

First time trying Ethiopian food. 10 outta 10. This is one of those places where the food is so good, you just don't want people to find out about it. Great value too

Loved the food and the preparation. The place as a great vibe, the coffee was amazing too. The service is a bit slow, so be patient. The only surprising thing I found is that they don’t serve tap water.

Central location, nice place but limited portions, average food quality. At 11 told to leave as the place was closing. I did not really enjoy the evening, I had better food (in terms of both quality and size of portions in other Ethiopians in Amsterdam). So, I won’t go back for food, for sure, maybe for a drink as the bar was lively (till 11!). Suggested to keep it open longer on a Saturday eve (in a capital city!)

We got a plate (1 ) for 5 people with only the meat from our dishes, when normally near the meat you get spinach, cheese, and other veggie. Doro (nuptial food): 1 piece of chicken (leg)! One! A small salad in the center with no flavour, just raw lettuce. 2 pieces of injeera at the side for 5 people Service slow and rude. We ordered drinks , but they refuse to give us a caraffe of water as well. 23 euro for a piece of chicken and 2 injeera divided for 5. I get the feeling that they thought we were tourists and they try to get the same price with much less quantity . Because it was not what we would have got in another restaurants and we go for Ethiopian quite often . We complained, but the girl took the feedback very bad and told us that 80 per cent of the clients were happy. Maybe they have been only there. We will never go there again, no food for that money

The food was tasty, but the pancake was a bit soggy/wet because of the salad, which made it difficult to eat. The steak was delicious. Recommend serving the salad separately. Space a little too small, spaces too close together. Good atmosphere and staff very friendly.

Cozy colourful warm intimate restaurant, but the quality/ price was disappointing. The taste was a bit bland and the price for a combined injera was expensive (23 euro). There are several other Ethiopian restaurants in the area/ city that serve more flavourful food and for a better price (around 17 euro). The glas of wine was also a bit too small.

The decoration is good, the drinks are delicious, and the price is still good. But the amount of minced meat is not much, and the flatbread is scary!

Mensen die er werken zijn met andere dingen bezig maar niet met hun klanten. Eten is zeer matig, prijs kwaliteit verhouding vind ik enorm uit balans. Ooit eerder in een Afrikaans restaurant gegeten en die was super. Dit was echt niks. Je krijgt wat prutjes (kleine porties) met vooral veel brood pannenkoekjes (die te zuur smaken) Nooit meer hier heen!

We shared the mixed meat & veggie version and it was a good mix! Service was not very pro active but would come when you gave a signal! The regional beers were amazing, try the mango beer!

The ambiance is nice, but the service is very chaotic and the food is quite plain, not really tasteful as I’ve tried other Ethiopian food before.

Sadly only a 3 star experience for us. Maybe we got unlucky, but we waited ~45 minute for one meal. For the prize of 4/5€ we just got a mini sip of wine - I would have expected a bit more. Also, while we were waiting some kind of gross looking bug crept up the wall right next to us. The food was delicious though

Prachtig en gezellig restaurant met heerlijk (vegetarisch) eten! Het restaurant bestaat al lang en voelt inmiddels heel vertrouwd.

Vriendelijk personeel. Vond het wel wat rommelig. Gasten zitten wel erg dicht op elkaar weinig privacy. Eten vond ik wel mee vallen ,maar dat kan ook aan mijn smaak liggen .ik had niets met het gemalen vlees . Mischien de volgende keer wat anders proberen ..

I wish I would have taken pics but I was starving by the time I finally ate. I had been looking for good Ethiopian food for a while so when I saw their reviews I was happy. Food was great atmosphere was also very welcoming. They have a small staff so bare with them all food is made fresh to order and it came out and was absolutely delicious. Do your self a favor and have an African Beer while you wait. Had a great time will definitely return.

Super leuk restaurant. Ik vond het eten heerlijk. Pittig, maar dat was bekend. Sfeervol en vriendelijke bediening.

Heerlijk gegeten op een dinsdagavond. We zaten bij t raam met uitzicht op de straat. We werden snel geholpen en eten kwam ook snel al onze kant op. Heel leuk om meerdere gerechtjes zo te kunnen delen. Zou het zeker aanraden om de keuze van meerdere gerechtjes voor 1 persoon van de kaart te bestellen. Zeker leuk om een keer naartoe te gaan.

The best Ethiopian restaurant I’ve been too, many vegetarian options!

Me and my cousin from London came here for some Ethiopian food and drink last week. The food was good, the staff were friendly - Daniel was very helpful and a photographer came in the shop and took a polaroid picture of us for 5 euros. Generally a great experience one customer came up to us towards the end of the meal, lovely man and gave us some good suggestions. Great experience and that 5 euros spent on that picture is the best 5 euros I've spent :)
