Totally disappointed by a chef that does not take feedback about an overcooked Teryaki Tuna! I know it is hot and we are all suffering but there is no need to be rude to your customers and neighbors. The lady is 100 % lovely but this behavior is 100 % unacceptable. I will certainly follow up on this …

Unfortunately, a very disappointing experience. The food was extremely salty. You can't take a bite without water and rice… Additionally, we had to wait far too long for the food. For the price, you really expect better in Amsterdam.

A true Japanese experience in Amsterdam!

I was suggested this place by a good foodie friend...and I understand why we are friends. AN was a great experience and I'm looking forward to my next visit.

Not a sushi restaurant, but delicious authentic Japanese dishes. Great value for money.

After a locals recommendation I wandered in here on a whim on a Thursday afternoon, not really anticipating what was about to come. There's a lot people throwing around the word "authentic" that often fall short of that moniker, this place however stepped up to the challenge. After a quick conversation with the front of house staff, I learned that they originates from Fukui, a region known for excellent rice, sake and urushi, with the chef coming from the region around Tokyo. After getting some recommendations, I ended up ordering the tempura, fried tofu, donburi bowl and a glass of Nanbu Bijin sake. The fishbowl was excellent, with some really nice and well tasting seafood, but the standout dishes were the tofu and the tempura. This is where delivering on the phrase "authentic" comes in. The tofu was lightly fried on the outside and soft on the inside, sitting in a delicious stock. The Tempura was light and airy with a juicy prawn on the inside served with a side of shredded daikon and citrus. If you live in Amsterdam, or even just visiting and long for Japanese cuisine that doesn't get stuck in the european expectation of "Japanese = Sushi and ramen", this is the perfect place for you.

Delicious food! We ordered one meat & fish omakase, one vegetarian omakase, and sashimi. Everything was soo delicious, especially the aubergine with miso, the tempura tofu, the fried chicken and the sashimi 🤤

Kinda Japanese restaurant with Dutch interior, prices and service. No sushi. Food here is not bad, we tried grilled fish, sashimi and mochi. Mochi was extremely overpriced, 6 euro for a single tiny not even delicious thing (see photo). Very disappointing. My friend also ordered miso soup, but we never got to try it because they forgot to bring it. Taking that there were almost people in the restaurant and our order was very simple, I found it a bit strange. And overall we didn’t feel very welcome. Another strange part was the interior. You usually expect something either modern or more authentic from Japanese restaurant. This place, however, is located in the old Dutch house, which would fit better to a more classic European restaurant. I can’t recommend this restaurant, there are better ones.

We had an amazing experience here. We ate edamame, agedashi tofu, sea bass shioyaki, gyoza, and yakiniku, and every dish was excellent. The flavors were spot-on, with a truly authentic Japanese taste that’s hard to find. For dessert, we tried the matcha and black sesame ice cream, as well as the shiro anko–cassis and coffee–caramel mochi—everything was perfectly balanced and delicious. The iced hojicha was also beautifully brewed, smooth and refreshing. If you’re looking for real homemade Japanese food in Amsterdam, this place is an absolute must-visit.

The food was tasty, but it took more than an hour to get a cucumber salad, and every dish took an extra 30 min to arrive at the table (we only ordered 5 plates). After we received everything it was not enough because the plates were smaller than we expected, so we wanted to order more and the kitchen closed earlier than the closing time (the waitress didn't mention it). Couples around us who arrived later than us got theiwhole order before us. For the food your should visit, but the overall experience is not worth the money.

Very cozy and well-hidden restaurant. But certainly worth a visit (or several) for the delicious food and the very friendly and fast service.

Authentic dishes, flavorful food, and a relaxed atmosphere. It took me right back to Naoshima.

Nice cozy place. It is located on the first floor of the building. The place is small but pleasant and cozy. They have a terrace that overlooks a beautiful garden. The menu is extensive and varied. There is even a choice of two set meals. I chose vegetable gyozas, seafood tempura, assorted sashimi, and chicken katsu. Everything was delicious. It reminded me of a grandmother's cooking, something well-cooked, that you might find in a home. I recommend a visit.

No sushi! Check first before coming in! Even if you want to order for your family different dishes for about 10 people..they do not take away!!! Not recommended, don't waste your time

To find truly authentic Japanese food outside of Japan is not an easy task. Things as simple as the type of rice can make an enormous difference. I honestly believe An is one of your best options in Europe. They use fresh ingredients, follow good recipes, and prefer a sober presentation, resulting in only delicious dishes, and always for a fair price. You cannot go wrong with An.

We had a wonderful night there. Both the miso soup and sashimi were particularly delicious, so I highly recommend them. Unlike many Japanese restaurants in Europe, this restaurant is run by Japanese people, so you can sample authentic Japanese food.

12/02/2025 Delicious food, fantastic dishes! Everyone was very friendly too. The hostess apologized for forgetting our reservation, but luckily we were able to get a seat anyway. We also got drinks on the house. In short, we absolutely enjoyed it and will definitely come back!

Authentic Japanese food in a homely atmosphere. We took the Omakase menu which was very delicious especially the salmon. The assorted tempura was also pretty good.

Very unfortunate! No more nigiri or rolls ☹️ Unfortunately, my sake glass was no longer served with a masu box, which meant that much less sake was poured.

One of my favorite Japanese restaurants in Amsterdam with amazing sushi (not covered in mayo like most Amsterdam spots), great omakase when you want to try multiple dishes, and delicious comforting miso soup! The biggest thing that needs improvement IMO is the lackluster atmosphere. It’s a cute restaurant but it’s like a really quiet living room, too quiet that guests are whispering to each other, and in general the setting feels quite sad and awkward. Some music could likely help.

Amazing and authentic japanese food- i had the 5 course sampling of fish meat vegetables etc and then side dishes aubergine miso and edamame and gyoza. Husband had broad choice of vegetarian food which is rare in japanese restaurants here. All was super. Fab service/waiter helpful tips etc. Lovely desserts eg black sesame ice cream. We will be back

A special dining address that has been a fixture in the city for a long time. Everything that comes to the table is prepared with great precision, using only the freshest ingredients. We ate the Omakase Menu and were surprised by the variety of aromas, textures and colors. The price-quality ratio is unbeatable. And the service is also of a rare quality (for Amsterdam)!

Been wanting to check this place out for a while, but food took 2.5 hours to arrive and they got the order partially wrong. Definitely not recommended.

Delicious food, the quality of the ingredients is very high and the dishes are excellent. In a city like Amsterdam, which is full of poor-quality restaurants and fast food, this place makes you want to eat out again and discover the culinary culture of other countries. The waiting times indeed reflect the quality of the dishes. Very kind staff and excellent prices. Well done!

Delicious food: Scallop salad! , super Sashimi and the Gyoza's. The two of us shared an Omakase menu to taste, which wasn't bad, but choosing my own dishes is my preference.

The atmosphere and the service people were really good but the food was below our expectations. The taste was decent but not amazing. The quality of the sushi was not super good.

Delicious Japanese food for a good price. I thought the tempura here was just as tasty as in Okura! Service a 3 because we had to wait a long time before we could order. I think that was incidental, so we would like to come back.

Delicious Japanese food. Simple dishes with great taste. Wonderful algae salads. Too bad we didn’t get to try the sushi as it was too late for our desired time (they told us in advance when making the reservation). We will come back for it!

Visited a Japanese restaurant recently and enjoyed the experience. The food was delicious, though the menu selection was limited, lacking options for sushi and sashimi due to staff shortages that evening. Despite this, the service was attentive, and the meal was enjoyable, especially the sesame ice cream—definitely a must-try!

Our rating is between 4 and 5 stars. The food tasted great, lots of choice and not standard sushi or ramen, price/quality ratio very good and service is excellent.

Oichidesu! Such delicious and well prepared Japanese food! This is my new favorite restaurant. I've been wanting to go for years and I'm so glad I did. The atmosphere is wonderful and the restaurant is filled with beautiful hand made ceramics. There is a simple but elegant Japanese mood and the staff is very friendly. It's also great for your vegetarian or vegan friends! Lots of delicious healthy options. I highly recommend the agadashi dofu and miso aubergine. But everything was beyond expectations.

Been coming here for years The only problem sometimes is the parking space, but for tasty Japanese food you take that for granted. At least for me, not an all you can eat sushi place.

The flavours were excellent. The dashi used as their base provided for excellent dishes. Recommend their sea bass nanbanzuke. The balance of vinegar and sweetness was perfect. Sushi was excellent. A good measure of a japanese restaurant is the tamagoyaki (sushi omelette) and I was wanting more! They were busy but the service was excellent and friendly. A great meal.

The AN is truly a hidden gem that is easily overlooked or misjudged. This cozy Japanese restaurant offers wonderful Japanese home cooking. The sushi is fantastic but you also have to try the gyoza*****. Everything is really delicious and served lovingly. The service is very attentive and helps with every question imaginable. Last but not least, they serve exceptional sake. We simply love it.

Likely the best japanese cuisine I've ever had in Europe. Also got free tap water which is much appreciated from students that need to be aware of budget :) Worth the price! They only accept certain types of cards, but the lady was kind enough to let us know ahead of time ans give us perfect directions to the ATM 3 minutes away. The Chirashi came with an excellent variety of various fish and pickled veggies. Very welcoming atmosphere.

Traditional Japanese experience in Amsterdam! It is traditional and authentic family Japanese restaurant. The atmosphere and staff are really cosy and warm… the taste of the dishes are very good especially we loved salmon and tuna!! I really recommend salmon sashimi and tuna nigiri 👌🏻 the price is definitely worth and affordable for this amazing food! Everything was really good and service is great!

A wonderful gem tucked away on a busy Amsterdam street! This restaurant is in a cozy old building and serves wonderful home-style Japanese food, including dishes you don't often see. Everything is absolutely delicious and the staff are lovely. Can't recommend it enough.

This place is amazing. We were able to get a last minute reservation here and we were so thrilled with the food and service! Sashimi was outstanding (scallop and mackerel), as was the gyoza, different kinds of seaweed salads, homemade pickles just to name a few. Definitely coming back here 👍🏼😝

The food and the service was good. We had Omakase (chef's menu), sushi and sashimi platter along with a Tofu starter. For the dessert we had pumpkin ice cream and red bean ice cream which were both home made. The lady explained us the dishes and was friendly.

Super authentic and cozy Japanese restaurant with very attentive and friendly service! Strongly recommended! All the food I’ve had has been perfectly cooked and seasoned, especially the gyoza is out of this world! The wait time between ordering and serving the food is impressively short. Must try hojicha (roasted matcha tea)! My longtime favorite! Decoration is very cozy and sweet. I love the china dishes & bowls on the walls! All and all, it’s becoming one of my fav Japanese joints in town!

Traditional japanese cuisine, highly recommend the eel sushi and miso soup. They have good tea and drink options, plum wine, sake and beer too. I didn't like the tempura, but the sushi , sashimi and meats were exquisite. A bit on the expensive side but depends really what you order.

Very high quality Japanese restaurant (best in Amsterdam). Great sushi, gyozas, chicken katsu, and homemade ice-cream. The staff is super friendly and the atmosphere is very welcoming and cozy. Reserve in advance as there is limited space.

Visited on a friday evening. Make sure to book at least a week in advance as this restaurant is quite small and there's practically no walk in tables available as its very busy and everyone makes a reservation. we ordered the omakase menu, the mixed sashimi/seafood bowl, season special fish (i forgot which fish) tempura and a ice cream. The tempura was very nice. crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. My boyfriend had the sashimi bowl and he enjoyed it very well. I had the omakase and it was nice. The karage was fried really nicely and the side dishes were good. The only disaappinting bits were the salmon and the brocolli side. the broccoli was just boiled and maybe had some sesame oil on it; the salmon was VERY salty. Not sure if it was the salmon itself or the teriyaki sauce but it was VERY salty. I got the calpis ice cream and that was nice. tasted like calpis.
