There’s something deeply satisfying about enjoying Japanese cuisine — the balance of flavors, the attention to detail, and the harmony between simplicity and elegance. Whether it’s the delicate taste of sushi, sashimi, or the tenderness of the wagyu beef, each dish tells a story rooted in tradition and seasonality. It’s not just a meal — it’s an experience and special thanks to Chihomi for making this experience possible. We will come back again!

My partner and I celebrated our Anniversary at Yamazato, and we couldn’t have had a more wonderful experience. We had the pleasure of being seated with a view of the beautiful zen garden and koi pond which provided the perfect backdrop for our dinner. The menu provided a creative and unique blend of traditional Japanese flavors. Most importantly, our server Chihomi was knowledgeable, welcoming, and attentive. We are very grateful for her hospitality, and she is to thank for this special memory. Overall, a beautiful restaurant, delicious food, and top notch staff!! A must try in Amsterdam!!

One of the best Kaiseki meals I've had, including multiple ones around Japan. Everything was delicious from the first course to the desserts and the amazing sakes. Heavenly flavors and textures. The service was absolutely top notch - extremely attentive, but never too much, always there when needed.

This was the best Japanese food I have had outside of Japan. All items from the menu were beautifully prepared and skillfully presented. The waitstaff were all attentive and caring. Our waitress Chinami was most skilled and made the evening a special occasion we will always remember.

Very disappointed with my experience. I was at the restaurant for my birthday dinner and expected to have some great meal considering it was 250 euro for one person’s menu. We paid about 500 in total including drink. in the quality of the dishes for the price. Most of the food was quite average, not something with the price point by any means, you can definitely have much better Japanese food for this price. I also got food poisoning after the dinner, the restraint was absolutely unresponsive about this and asked me to prove that my food poisoning was due to their food poisoning even though this was my only meal of the day. The sommelier was amazing and the same as well and nothing wrong with the service. But the price/quality of the food is not great and for 500 euros I do not expect to be sick afterwards. Extremely disappointed.

Amazing! A memorable experience in every way. We had the tasting menu for 2, which was varied, highly original in presentation, with clean and well balanced taste. Each course was beautifully plated - additional nice touch: we were given an explanatory map that points out the region of origin for every course. The Chefs provided tasty alternatives to avoid food allergies of one of my table guests. The gracious Hostess was extremely well-informed, welcoming and provided the personalised attention that goes above and beyond. She knew the menu and the intricacies of preparation, which she shared with genuine enthusiasm. We opted for sake instead of a wine pairing and the equally enthusiastic and educated Sommelier's recommendations were spot-on for each course. A lovely finishing touch was the origami bird and personalised birthday card at the end of the meal, as the staff had taken note of the fact it had been mentioned in the reservation. I love good food and the warmth of sharing a meal, whether it be at a family run small restaurant or the occasional splashing out at a top rated place. Expectations are especially high when a place comes recommended and has Michelin stars. Yamazato' s back and front of house, the serene atmosphere and impeccable menu more than lived up to its reputation. Thank you!

Beautiful location, delicious food and excellent service.

The service was amazing and the food was even better, you can tell that the restaurant really put effort into each and every ingredient and detail of the dish. Our waitress Chihomi was very polite and friendly as she carefully explained each of the dishes to us. The interior of the restaurant was also very peaceful especially if you are sat near the garden. Must try if you are looking for a special place to take you to Japan!

Our waitress and sommelier were very attentive hosts, making us very comfortable all through the evening. A sensational, unforgettable dining experience that transports you to Japan, every bit worthy of its Michelin star. If you are looking for an authentic Japanese kaiseki experience, look no further - this is the place for you! From the moment you step into the restaurant, the wooden decor and Japanese garden that greets you makes you feel that you have been transported to Japan. It goes without saying that the food was delicious, but it was so much more than “just” delicious. Every course was exquisitely presented, beautiful and aesthetically pleasing even down to the utensils used (e.g. the blue glass of the Shinogi course that evoked a sense of cool, refreshing summer breeze). Every single ingredient on each course complemented each other perfectly, in terms of their textures, and achieving the perfect balance of their complex flavours and umami. The charcoal-grilled lobster, and the spectacle that is the charcoal-heated traditional hotpot, were visually stunning and breathtaking in so many ways - not just the depth of flavours on offer, but also the fragrance of the dish itself, and the supporting players on the plate that brought precise, little touches of much-needed lightness.The nyumen (noodles) was an absolute dream, the perfect harmony that I never knew existed! Kudos to the team and chefs for their efforts and persistence in using many authentic, seasonal ingredients sourced directly from Japan - such as the yuzu peel from Tokushima and the sea bream sashimi - which is hard to come by in Europe and really elevated the whole experience. It was really admirable and we really appreciate it. The other star of our experience has to be our waitress, Chinami-san. She was wonderful and so knowledgeable about all the courses and ingredients, and gave really informative explanations of everything. She was attentive, caring and kind, making sure that our glasses and drinks were constantly refilled, and even ensuring that the pacing of the courses were comfortable for us - it was this little touch of personalisation that shows just how much care went into a single meal. We had a great conversation and cannot thank her enough for making our experience such a memorable one. The drink selection deserves a special mention, too - the seasonal sakura cocktail was not only gorgeous to look at, it was so fragrant and evokes a sense of hanami (appreciating the sakura blossoms). The Ama Shizuku (non-alcoholic) was as surprising as it was amazing, we have never tried anything that tasted even remotely like that but loved it so much - would highly recommend it to those who do not drink alcohol to try. Overall, this is probably an experience that is impossible to surpass. Not surprising that this restaurant is the first kaiseki restaurant outside of Japan to be awarded a Michelin star - we may be biased, but this restaurant is definitely a must-do in Amsterdam. Even if you are not familiar with the Japanese kaiseki concept, please give this restaurant a try - you will not be disappointed!

Came to celebrate a special occasion as I also stated when making the reservation, however they did not do anything with it. Not even a candle with the dessert. Such a shame as we came here often and for this price point it was the least we expected.

We came here for the first time 21 years ago and it was our favorite restaurant. We kept coming back every year. The experience was unique, the food spectacular and the presentation very refined. I think since the last 7 years the experience is totally different. Tonights meal was quite disappointing. Its a shame. I dont think we’ll go back. The price is twice as high and way below expectations.

This restaurant meets all the requirements to provide an exceptional dinner. The dining room is beautiful, the service is excellent, with most of the staff being Japanese, the menu is of great quality, with balanced moments, lots of umami and with special emphasis on the nigiris and wagyu, of tremendous quality. The Michelin star is fully justified.

For over 600 Euros for two, this was by far the most disappointing meal of my life. The food was still okay, but for the value it is not nearly worth it. The only reason we stayed was because of how great our server was.

It was our first time with you. We had a wonderful evening with fantastic dishes and excellent service. The friendly and very knowledgeable f.o.h made our 5th anniversary unforgettable. The sommelier served us beautiful sake and the service was spot on in terms of timing. A handwritten note with Japan tips (we had indicated that we were planning to visit Japan) made the whole thing almost family-like and we therefore left the restaurant with a warm feeling. On to the next anniversary, we will be back. Thanks!

I have to say that the service and ambience is immaculate. It is a quiet, calm and peaceful space, where you can enjoy simple interior and being taken care of. We have been here two times. The first time, the food was good, the second time not so much. The wagyu steak was overcooked, the dishes were bland. Unfortunately, we will not visit again. The price point is high, but the food is not meeting the expectations at all. The dishes are poorly cooked and seasoned. One more thing that ruined the second experience is the restroom outside of the restaurant. The woman’s restroom was closed. You could use the men’s restrooms, but it is extremely small for the amount of people (resulting in a cue), dirty and you could basically look in the eyes of other people in the standing toilets while washing hands, because you see everything in the reflection. Something that I don’t want to experience when visiting a Michelin star restaurant.

Previously a fantastic unique sushi bar experience, Yamazato has turned into an over-rated 1* Michelin gastronomic Japanese restaurant. Good service, good food but which unfortunately cannot compensate for a dull atmosphere with poor decoration (the old sushi bar is masked by some wooden walls instead of removing it!) and prices which are now stratospheric for such a rated restaurant (one house cocktail + menu excluding wine for 570€, add a bottle of Chassagne -Montrachet 2022 for 200€, a dull experience for 770€ for 2!) Sincerely not worse it

Absolutely delicious but not cheap! Had Japanese tea with it because I had to drive. Beautiful dishes with delicious refined flavors. If you have the chance I would eat there. Extremely good and tasty.

I had an unforgettable birthday dinner last Sunday. During my stay at the Okura Hotel three years ago, this restaurant caught my attention, and upon a friend's recommendation, I was excited to finally dine here. Upon arrival, we were immediately greeted with warmth and hospitality. The interior, ambiance, and atmosphere were all excellent, and the female staff, dressed in traditional Japanese clothing, added a wonderful touch to the experience. The food was exquisite: beautifully presented, thoughtfully explained, and tasted incredible. Our favorite dish was the Wagyu steak, which might just be the best Wagyu we've ever had. The service was the best we've experienced at any Michelin restaurant we've visited so far. I would like to extend a special thank you to the main host, Chihomi, and her colleagues, who took such great care of us that evening. Not only was Chihomi incredibly kind, but she was also very attentive to every detail. For example, my partner noticed that Chihomi immediately recognized he was left-handed based on how he placed his chopsticks and glass of sparkling sake (which is a must-order), and later adjusted the plates, chopsticks, and glass accordingly. He mentioned that he had never had staff notice he was left-handed in this way at any other restaurant. We also appreciated how they asked about and took into account the pacing of each dish served, making sure the flow of the meal was perfect. As a sweet surprise, I was given a miso chocolate cake in addition to the dessert for my birthday. And to top it all off, we received a small origami crane for good luck at the end of the meal. Thank you, Chihomi, and the entire team at Yamazato. We’re already planning our next visit! :)

The birthday surprises, including a miso chocolate cake and origami crane, made the evening even more memorable. We’re already planning our next visit!

Oshogatsu - New Year in Japanese. It seems to be the most important festival of the year, a true high festival and they celebrate it on the same day as we do. Never before have I eaten such an excellent meal in Yamazato and the food that is only prepared on New Year's Day is truly of an unprecedented high quality. A true feast for all the senses! With so many good wishes in my tummy, I am really looking forward to 2025!

Christmas dinner in Yamazato. Truly fantastic menu in structure, execution, taste and layout. In my opinion, Yamazato deserves a second Michelin star. Within the contours of the original Japanese cuisine, the service, the wine pairing, exemplary sommelier and the sublime signature of the current new chef in combination with the beautifully original, timelessly decorated restaurant that also feels like a Japanese pavilion, this seems to be a feasible goal. Better again! Compliments!

5 hours 8 courses of wonder. I cannot say anything more than, "wonderful". I and my husband are frequent michelin restaurant explorers. Generally, everything falls short. Yamazato in Amsterdam reaches the same level as many we tried in Tokyo. Not to mention the fact that - the staff are outstanding. The chef is a genius with a team of ~20 and still growing. The wine sommelier is tactful and knowledgeable.

Again another experience at Okura, afternoon lunch and dinner same day at Yamazato. What an incredible experience, this restaurant together with Ciel Bleu from what I heard from my children and friends are definitely in my top 5 of best restaurants. Let the pics speak for themselves !!!

A disappointment. Have eaten here roughly a dozen times (biggest bill was >€12k) and overall at >50 Michelin starred restaurants across the world. Tonight - enjoyable but underwhelmed. Overall value for money felt missing and the dishes were fine but not incredible. Service wonderful, and being able to pop up to the 23rd floor for a drink afterwards was great… but meal itself was “ok”. Wine pairing fine, but only one or two stood out. Given I paid almost €1k for dinner for two… I would expect more

We have had a very wonderful dinner there! They have very good service which is rare to see in the Netherlands. Also I like the vibe in the restaurant. sashimi, sushi and wagyu steak are really amazing! Also coffee latte there is amazing.

Delicious food in an atmospheric environment. You feel like you are in Japan. The dishes allow the natural flavors of the ingredients to come into their own. The service is also extremely friendly and attentive. A bit pricey, but for us it was more than worth it.

Everything here is wonderful. The setting and atmosphere are especially unique and the service is probably the best I've had in any other one-Michelin-star restaurant. All dishes are exceptional and the menu is well-balanced. Accept any sake recommendation you get in the wine pairing, this is the perfect occasion to do so. Well worth the price tag!

I visited this place last year and wanted to share my review. Located inside the Okura Hotel, Yamazato Restaurant offers traditional dishes from the Japanese Kaiseki cuisine, with a typical Japanese atmosphere and service. They serve 9 or 10 different courses, explaining each one in great detail. We went in the evening, so I couldn’t see the garden’s atmosphere, but the place is truly beautiful, enjoyable, and perfect for fine dining. I highly recommend trying it!

My husband has never eaten there and he was blown away, it was his first introduction to kaiseki cuisine. Compliments to the kitchen and of course to the service, not to mention the sommelier. Unfortunately we don't know his name, but he recommended 2 very nice wines for my husband's dishes. After dinner we received a very sweet card from the waitress Isuzu-san because she also thought it was very pleasant and fun. We were also surprised with a festive gesture for our anniversary, very thoughtful and sweet of you. We had a night of our lives, thanks to all of you. Thank you so much again and we hope to come back again.

Fantastisch gegeten bij Yamazato. Pure smaken, kwaliteit van de producten ongekend, kundige bediening en goddelijke combinaties met sake en wijn. Alle gerechtjes waren een feestje, maar vooral de wagyu zullen we nog lang onthouden.

This place was fantastic for a quiet and calm evening while enjoying delicious food. The staff was extremely welcoming and kind. The food exceeded all our expectations even as people who lived in Japan for several years.

The food was decent, but given the price, I was a bit disappointed. Some dishes were a bit bland, while others were just okay. I was expecting a bit more. On the bright side, the service was fantastic. It’s probably some of the best I’ve experienced in Amsterdam!

Sometimes you need/want to make a statement. Bringing somebody to Yamazato is such a statement. You care and you only want to bring the best. Great night. Impressive food. Fantastic atmosphere.

Had an amazing experience. The service was very personal and skilled. They told us about the food and wines / sakes in detail. The food and drinks themselves were exceptional.

Tucked away in a hotel lobby which also houses other Michelin star restaurants. Staff is great and the restaurant itself has great atmosphere - the back does face a koi pond and a garden so it’s refreshing. The wine selection is also good (don’t expect it not to be) and the som walked us through and help select a great wine pair. The options are between two pre set menus and you can’t go wrong with either. I will say the food does get too much as you get closer and closer to the end - given it’s a 2hr sitting the pace is great but just felt full half way through the menu (personal note and not a mark on the restaurant. Enjoy the food but don’t be surprised to see a big bill - reservations recommended.

A high price tag that truly is worth every penny. From the ambiance to the attention to detail, there is not a single thing I could comment negatively on. I tremendously enjoyed my 25th birthday dinner here and hope to come back in the future

What an experience! My team and I had the pleasure of having dinner at Yamazato, and everything was phenomenal. The ambiance, service, and presentation of meals were nothing short of excellence. The pictures certainly don't do this establishment justice, but I highly recommend having your next dinner here if you're in the area.

This was such a special meal. The service was impeccable and the food was truly amazing. Chihomi took such good care of us, explaining each dish simply and elegantly. Paul was also wonderful and gave us great recommendations and descriptions of the wine and sake. Will recommend to everyone coming to Amsterdam!

Very good and clean food. It is a very serene and relaxing restaurant. Really the feeling of being in the middle of Japan.

The food was incredibly delicious and amazing quality. Our waitress, Chinami, provided great service and made our experience truly top tier. Would highly recommend!

The hotel Okura is home to two Michelin restaurants, including the amazing Yamazato. This Michelin star restaurant definitely lives up to its reputation. When I arrived at the restaurant, I was quickly checked in and led to my table. I had a wonderful seat with a direct view of the Japanese garden and pond in the back of the hotel. It was very serene and peaceful. The service here is impeccable, and the food is superb. Every server here is from Japan dressed in Kimono's adding to the ambiance. I was just in Sapporo and Tokyo earlier this year, and the fish here was also just as fresh and flavorful as in Japan, too. The Wagyu was cooked to perfection and melted in my mouth. I would highly recommend upgrading to the Icho Kaiseki menu. It will elevate the Omakase experience to a whole new level. If you are looking for an authentic sushi experience outside of Japan, make sure to put Yamazato on your list.

It was a nice evening but nothing out of the ordinary. The prices were. The food was well prepared, the staff friendly, but this was in our opinion not a Michelin star experience.

Best Japanese food ever. What a great place.

Had a very nice experience a few years ago, but it seems since the pandemic there is no longer a lunch course? Do you have plans to start this again at some point? It seems a shame not to be able to enjoy the beautiful space in the daytime.

I've been here twice. Once with my mum in spring and once with my sister in summer. The food is excellent and the service too. The photos I've attached are from the first time I was there. The garden outside is really pretty and nice to look at and see the fish. This was the first time I tried Wagyu as well and it was so delicious.
