The baker of the future!!! In the future, your bread will be dry and unpalatable!! Last week, I got two loaves of bread, cut into 4 halves, and put them straight in the freezer the next day, they were so dry and unpalatable!! Terrible!!!@

Good coffee and avocado toast. Also brought some bread for homemade toast ☺️

Employees refused to cut bread for €4.35 because it was still too warm, even though it had already cooled down. After 10 minutes of discussion, another employee cut the bread without any problems.

We decided to grab a quick lunch in Leiden. We thought the bakery would be a good choice. We weren't disappointed. We ordered a club sandwich, and it was a real treat.

Van Maanen is a pretty good baker. In the Netherlands, you find small bakery chains everywhere, thank goodness, I sometimes think, because it's one of the few food production chains that hasn't yet been poisoned by foreign venture capitalists. Presumably, making bread is such a delicate process that almost no large company dares to touch it. There also seems to be little room left to differentiate yourself within that industry; almost all recently launched bakery products have been doomed to failure. Think of the Piggy Bar, the Oranje Pouce, the Turcotaart (which, because of its name, only does well in 't Gooi...), the Eskimotaart, or the Smurfvlaai... Well, "bread and affordable" are two concepts that haven't really gone hand in hand since the beginning of this century. Moreover, factory-made bread is particularly unpleasant, and in such cases, I always end up looking for a good and acceptable alternative. And, dear friends, I found that alternative! For a while now, I've been eating quality bread, albeit bread that's "past its sell-by date." This isn't because I can't afford fresh bread, but simply because I'm rather principled, and there's often nothing you can do about that. "Environmental factors," I always answer when people ask. This Van Maanen store on the Nieuwe Rijn—it's teeming with Van Maanens here, in fact. There are three of them in the nearest shopping center alone... This extremely elongated Van Maanen store is distinguished mainly by its gigantic size. When you go to the bathroom and walk all the way back, you have to...and that makes the place a bit uninviting, I must say. And then the sales counter is also placed lengthwise in the store, while the store already looks endless...not smart, sales-wise... There are tables in front of the door for relaxing when you have a partner who likes to 'shop', oh sorry, 'shops' of course!..., after all, people still have to understand what you write and what you're talking about, Niehland... Anyway, I sometimes get my stale bread from this store and buy a paper bag of stale bread for a fixed price. Unfortunately, the egg cakes Van Maanen makes are probably not that tasty and often remain unsold, so I was unpleasantly surprised by two enormous and pontifically presented packages of egg cakes, next to which, I only noticed after a closer look, also lay a croissant, 8 rolls, and a rather meager loaf of bread. Well, that was a bit of a disappointment, you go to the bakery to get bread, right? Then you might also expect that, let's say, most of it will be bread; one pack of egg cakes would have been nice. Once outside, I walked to the nearest bridge and provided the seagulls with a feast they'll remember for a long time.

Atmospheric bakery with a cozy restaurant area. You can have a delicious coffee or lunch here. Excellent quality and friendly service. When I am in Leiden I like to stop by baker Van Maanen.

Besides being in a good location there was almost nothing good to say about this place, unless you feel like waiting 10 minutes to order, waiting 30 minutes for them to finally bring your first drinks correctly and waiting 45 minutes for the food to arrive which is then not right. After walking to the wrong table five times you would think it wouldn't happen a sixth time. But hey it was a busy day, maybe better when it's quiet.

We went inside and asked for a table to one of the waitresses. We sat down at a small table and waited for her to take away the dirty dishes from the people before us and take our order. She knew we were here. We had a few eye contacts, and we asked for her multiple times. She ignored us for good 10min, on purpose, and cleaned other tables (without people). We left because we felt we wouldn't be served. Wouldn't recommend, unfortunately.

Nice place to take a break with your child. There is a cozy corner for children to play. The pastries and cookies are delicious!

I'm not a croissant gourmet :) But it might be the best we've ever eaten. Everything is as it should be. Understated and delicious. Thank you.

Nice ambiance. A bit big and busy. Lots of noise. Something happens. Friendly and cheerful young staff. Beautiful space with old and new details. Good granola yogurt. Delicious cheese cake. In addition, beautiful tasty coffee at reasonable prices, everything. Recommended if you are staying in Leiden and want to have coffee and breakfast in the morning.

After waiting 20 minutes for service, we went again. The most annoying thing is not being seen.

Croquettes arrived cold at the table, so they were sent back to the kitchen. Unfortunately, the next time they came out of the kitchen cold again. Then we left after paying for our drinks. Apparently frying croquettes is too difficult

Nowhere else where the flat White or latte machiato is served deliciously hot.

A place for breakfast or lunch with a complete menu of pastries or sandwiches made on site. Many customers come for the bread.

Well, I don't know what's going on, waiting 10 minutes to order a capuccino. Finally walked to the back to order there and paid immediately. 2 capuccinos and a filled cookie. 1 capuccino and cookie will be brought to you. The second cup is coming...but she doesn't say when. You drink coffee together. The first capuccino is cooling down and I decide to drink it. Someone comes from outside to ask if an order can be taken. I don't see anyone getting ready to go outside and the table opposite me asks where the snacks they ordered are. Things are clearly not going well. So my wife decides to get her own capuccino. That still had to be started. Have a nice drink together Not so, but I now had some time to write a review. Oh yes, the lady from outside had just gotten back inside when someone else came. Total lack of overview this afternoon. Entrepreneur Van Maanen will benefit from this review, such a beautiful business deserves better and your customers (5 of whom I have seen) certainly do.

The 4 of us had lunch this afternoon and the food was super tasty. Good coffee, sandwiches and service!

We were not allowed to order sandwiches to take away because the kitchen could not handle it. if we sat on the terrace, it would be possible. Logic escapes me....

Beautiful store, but the staff is not nice and not professional!

Had to wait for 20 minutes before a waitress came to us. We ordered two cappuccinos and a cake (already made) and it took further 20 minutes to arrive. Cake was dry, seemed a bit old.

Today we had cappuccino and something to eat here. The cappuccino was ok, the sausage roll was reasonable, the children's muffin was dry and tasted of nothing and the carrot cake we ordered later was made 2 days earlier, hard and a bit on the dry side, according to us. The entourage is fine, but this does not deserve to be repeated. Too bad, because the interior is nice and the atmosphere is great.

Very nice place in Leiden to have a cup of coffee or something to eat, which you can do inside or outside on the terrace. During the market it is of course a double delight, great people watching. Unfortunately I had a somewhat disappointing experience today, I was not seen and so I left after 10 minutes. Shame. Still, I give 5 stars and will come back again, it must have been an incident.

Had a delicious chicken thigh sandwich here. Price is reasonable with a chicken thigh sandwich for 11.75. The service is fast and friendly. Don't be put off if there is a line. This is usually for the bakery itself and not for the part where you can have lunch.

Have visited two times, had some good food, but waiters are quite inattentive (and not very pleasant). I was waiting for quite some time both times and in the end, had to go to the counter myself.

Nice brunch but terrible, terrible service. Waited 40 minutes to be served and after approaching the water who had ignored me he sent a waitress to serve me. When I went to pay, again I had to wait and I wasn't asked if if everything was okay or how was my food. I'll never return and will tell others to avoid.

Bright and airy inside seating area. Plenty of tables to choose from to sit at. Staff friendly and knowledgeable of extensive menu. Food excellent, drinks hot and service quick.

Everything seems to be getting more expensive. Still a nice meal, nice atmosphere, relaxed. If you're in a hurry you're selling yourself short.

Well well. I order drinks and cakes here for good money. But then after a while they come and say that the chocolate balls are sold out. My children were not happy with that. Unprofessional to sell something you don't have

Heerlijk broodje gezond met truffel mayo. Fijne ‘bediening’. Er zijn 2 plekjes binnen om te zitten., 1 plek buiten. Trek in een broodje, zeker doen.

Delicious food! The sandwich is extraordinary. It’s perfect for a post run meal.

A real disaster. The staff without any training or knowledge of the menu, even unfriendly, only serves the customer with 7 Dutch surnames, if they put it at the door, with NOT entering everything is fine for them and especially for the customer. The products are the customer's daily surprise: there is, there is not, it is not clear who is serving, they do not know, they do not answer and you wait half an hour and in the end there is none. Result, several very beautiful places await us very close.

Good bakery with a wide selection of breads, pastries and other artisan goods. I can highly recommend trying their cheese bread, it has crispy cheese on the outside and melted cheese within, it's the best I have had from any Dutch Bakery!

Een winkel vol heerlijkheden en voortreffelijke koffie!

Dit is echt een leuke zaak. Vintage stoelen, ruimte ziet er apart uit. Vriendelijk personeel.

Heerlijke lunch op in de sfeervolle lunchroom van Bakker v Maanen in Leiden. We bestelden het broodje avocado met de gerookte zalm en de clubsandwich 'gezond'. Prijs-kwaliteitverhouding en portiegrootte goed. Vooral het broodje avocado smaakte héérlijk. Bediening vriendelijk en vlotte service. Het was nu rustig. De kinderen konden in de wachttijd spelen in de speelhoek met keukentje en kleurspullen.

Wir tranken, so gegen 1100 Uhr nur einen Kaffe. Einrichtung, Kaffee und die Kekse waren gut und lecker, die Sanitäreinrichtung ist alt und nicht gerade sauber.

They have English menus so ask if you need one. Tea was fantastic. African Affairs Roobios was our favorite.

Lovely bakery in the heart of Leiden.

Belegde broodjes voor afhalen besteld, tot 2x toe verkeerde bestelling gekregen. Duurde al met al erg lang, amper excuses gekregen. Broodjes waren wel lekker…

Nu twee keer op zaterdagochtend ontbeten. Was wel druk, maar we kregen vlot een tafel. Ontbijt was prima, tegen een goede prijs. Een extra paar handen om uit te serveren of op te ruimen zou wel handig zijn. Maar ja... in deze tijden...

place is nice, nice location and atmosphere. i wouldn't recommend you to go on a Sunday, though, food is not fresh and they don't serve take away coffee for some reason

Lage klantvriendelijkheid. Ik stond ervan te kijken vandaag. Helaas heb ik mijn arm geblesseerd en loop bakkerij van Manen dan ook vandaag binnen, met 1 mouw teruggestopt in m'n jas, dus dit is ook zichtbaar voor anderen. Ik kan nu niet fietsen, dus ik was speciaal komen lopen voor de aanbieding van het duinenbrood. Ik vraag om twee broden en of ze het alsjeblieft in vier halfjes zou willen geven, omdat ik dat nu zelf niet kan. De verkoopster (een volwassene, geen tiener) zegt dat ze dan wel halfjes moet rekenen en dat ik dat de aanbiedingsprijs dan niet krijg. Ik zeg haar dat ik snap dat het normaal gesproken zo is, maar dat ik het nu zelf niet kan. Ze zegt dat ze eerst niet gezien had, dat ik nu maar 1 arm heb, maar ze draait haar statement niet terug en op mijn verzoek helpt ze met de broden in mijn tas doen. Ik krijg alleen de aanbiedingsprijs als ik twee hele broden neem. Ik vraag erom de manager te spreken, die zegt dat de verkoopster er nog niet lang is, maar dat de helftjes ook in de aanbieding zijn, maar niet dezelfde aanbieding. En vervolgens dat ze toch niet voor iedereen een uitzondering kunnen maken. Toen heb ik maar gezegd: "laat maar". Hij biedt niet aan er toch even vier halfjes van te maken. Geen meelevenheid, geen warm woord, geen medewerking. Bij de Franse bakker in de buurt kreeg ik juist een hartelijk woord, medewerking en zelfs een klein extraatje om de pijn te verlichten. En weet je, toen leek de dag een stukje lichter. Nou, nu ga ik eerst maar aan iemand anders vragen om die twee broden in kleinere zakjes te doen, want met 1 hand is dat minder makkelijk. Jammer, een kil moment voor mij en meer mantelzorg dus. Aparte reactie, toch?
