Bali James - Indonesisch Restaurant in Breda centrum

Visited as near to our hotel, luvly friendly welcome from female staff, wearing nice trousers and lacey tops. We order a bottle of wine. Then Ordered Kleine Rijsttafel for 3 of us to share. Dishes included white rice, pork in soya sauce, slow cooked beef, chicken satay, prawn crackers with toasted coconut and peanuts, to name a few of them. All our food was delicious and freshly prepared. Our Indonesian food was very different to what we had ever tasted before, everything was very flavoursome. We thoroughly njoyed our visit, just a pity we were unable to return. The restaurant is beautiful, bright and very spacious, the decor, photographs, statues etc make it very authentic. Highly recommend a visit here. Hopefully return if we return to Breda. :) :) :)

Ate here again after a while, but the quality was disappointing. Beans from a jar/can, pineapple from a can. Ordered the extensive rijsttafel for 2 people, but the price/quality ratio is really not okay. A real shame.

The food was good, though. But I have had better Indonesian food. The service left something to be desired. When we finished eating, we were not asked if we wanted dessert. When we walked to the counter to pay, we were given the bill for another table, which was higher than ours. Hence our low rating.

Beautiful, atmospheric restaurant that has been in Breda for 50 years. Small outdoor terrace. The food is delicious and nicely placed on the heated chafing dish in the middle of the table. Unfortunately, there is a bit of a shortage of staff.

It was always super delicious. Wanted to get a large rijsttafel for takeaway, but that was no longer possible, only a small one, and it really wasn't good. Not worth repeating, even though we had been coming here for years.

Bad! You get the food in flat containers {read: very little}, the meat is tough, and the beans come from a can! Well, just bad. The wait staff didn't respond either when they asked if we enjoyed the meal and couldn't give a positive answer. The same with paying the bill; they didn't respond when I said it didn't taste good. No tip! And word-of-mouth advertising is another story... so, bad overall...

It looks like the dishes come from a soup kitchen. Everything tastes a bit the same. It has little to do with Indonesian food. The service is also truly awful.

Very bad experience! Had to wait more than an hour and a half for the food! When it finally arrived, it was lukewarm and not tasty. Had invited friends who like Indonesian cuisine. Very disappointing!

Authentic Indonesian snacks and good, helpful staff

No reservations needed on a Saturday evening. My friends have been taking guests in this restaurant. They do notice the change in quality in the food. The service is still good, with friendly staff who looked after us. The food, well I thought most of the meat was dry. The skewers were dry, the rendang was dry and the tiny chicken was also dry. The taste of some dishes were also a bit off. The ribs for example that was supposed to be spicy, was just bland. Almost all dishes could use a little more seasoning and perhaps marinated longer. I expected a lot because of the nice reviews and the memories of my friends.

Fine dining Indon restaurant. As it's Bali focus, hence has pork dishes. Did not try d rice table as I was dining alone. The soto ayam was surprisingly good, as was d tahu telur. Had Es Teler Bali James for dessert, basically fruit cocktail based ice shaving on bandung.. If you feel like giving yourself a treat, then this is d place.

I have always been positive about Bali, but unfortunately, this has been a very bad experience. After years of ordering rijsttafels and having had positive experiences, a lot has changed. Many items are missing, and when you call about it, they get angry and shout on the phone. Four small rijsttafels for 150 euros, only to receive half-empty containers that are cold, is just too much. This was the last time.

Brilliant restaurant, with great staff and superb food. We had the set menu for the 3 of us and it was so tasty. Great interaction from the staff. Only issue was a non British menu. That would gave been useful, but we got round it with Google translate. We eill be back before we leave Breda.

Today we picked up a rijsttafel for 2 people. We have been coming to this restaurant for over 30 years and have always had delicious food and very good service. The takeaway dishes were always top-notch too. Today, however, a number of dishes were missing from our order: sambal, sayur lodeh, taugé sambal goreng, and tahu telor (which are on the menu, though). We then called and were told that if you order for 2 people, you only get 1 type of vegetable (this is not stated anywhere!) and that taugé hasn't been included with the takeaway dishes for 30 years. 30 years???? What nonsense, it was still included half a year ago! And why only 1 type of vegetable for 2 people?! And that with an order for 80 euros!!!! It is a shame that we, as (regular) customers, are being lied to and aren't even allowed to explain what we thought of it ('yes but'... was all we were told). I indicated that I would write a review about this. 'Go ahead' was the answer. With that...... this is very unfortunate.

Restaurant Bali James is a shadow of its former glory. The quality of the food is reasonably good, but the quality-quantity-price ratio is far from good. The large rijsttafel (€ 44.00 p.p. and available for a minimum of 2 people) is overpriced, especially considering the quantity you receive. Everything is measured out to a minimum (2 prawns, 2 halved boiled eggs, 4 small cubes of beef, etc.). The à la carte menu excludes white rice, nasi kuning, nasi, or bami goreng. We had to pay € 8.25 (!!) for a small bowl of nasi kuning with the à la carte dish Ikan makreel Bumbu Bali (€ 20.00), so € 28.25 for 2 small pieces of mackerel (one fillet and then a lean tail piece)... a real disgrace. Service and hospitality are not great: we were politely asked to pay the bill when we didn't want to order anything more and all the other guests had already left, so that “we can then stop” [close up].

We come to Breda every year for the festival, and Bali James used to be our go-to restaurant: that's over, we won't be going back. The braised meat was frozen; the Nazi goreng was bland and not stir-fried. The dishes were tasteless. No apologies, no gesture of goodwill, and a huge disappointment. Everything was below our usual standard. What's more, the prices have skyrocketed while the portions have shrunk. I don't recommend it and I regret that this restaurant has fallen so low in both quality and service.

A delicious, filling Indonesian rijsttafel.

What used to be a wonderful restaurant, we now consider a shadow of its former glory. The staff is friendly, but the food is below average for us. Drinks were served upon arrival, and everything was on the table within 10 to 15 minutes, which makes me wonder if everything is already prepared in the kitchen in warming trays. Some dishes weren't even really warm and consequently went completely cold quickly, despite being placed on a hot plate. We received no explanation of what everything was (which used to be the case). The bamboo shoots/sambal goreng Rebung served in a small bowl had a strong (nasty) sour smell that stood out above all the other dishes; we didn't eat that either. The tables were sticky, and the edges around the round warming plate were really dirty, with the sealant broken in some places. The dessert menus are also dirty and sticky; they were simply placed in the food scraps still lying on the round plate, which explains why they are dirty. Where we used to regularly enjoy delicious meals, after this experience it is no longer worth repeating for us, and we find that a real shame!!

Great Indonesian restaurant ! Restaurant Bali is a place I've been visiting for over 35 years now. And it hasn't changed much over the years. It's a comfortable, classic restaurant with just plain and simple, wonderful Indonesian food. Service is always great and helpful. Every visit feels a bit like visiting family.

Reservations made at 7:00 PM, table arrived at 7:45 PM. Food arrived at 8:40 PM. The price-quality ratio was far below expectations, which is a real shame. Not something we'll be returning to.

We enjoyed a large rijsttafel (rice table). I found the flavors a bit too adapted to the local culture. We were there on a Saturday. It was uncomfortably busy, too busy. The waitstaff apologized for this. For a nice, quiet meal, go on a weekday.

The staff were undoubtedly hardworking, but no one seemed to want to welcome you. Dont look at your tables at all. it took 45 min before they finally orderd or drinks! after asking many times. had to wait 1,5 hours before you finally had food! When you finally had your food the quality was okay. But it was mostly rice and just a bit of meat. So pricewise lots of money for cheap rice. never ever again. never. Sound was VERY hard. Can't speak with your friends on the end of the table at all. all tables people are sitting with there arms over each other... waiting for the drinks and food.

We didn't look back at the reviews either, but apparently we weren't the only ones who thought so. We were with a group and were literally given the menu, without any interaction like "Hello, have a nice evening," "Welcome," or anything like that. After that, we had to wait an hour for someone to ask us a question. I don't think it's very polite, but eventually, I had to raise my hand just to get any attention. They don't "see" work... Finally, we ordered a rijsttafel (rice table) and weren't asked anything, just "Okay." We had to wait 45 minutes for that too. The food itself was fine! However, compared to the meat and rice, etc., we found it mediocre. All in all, I won't go there again and would rather order a rijsttafel from the local Chinese restaurant. After 10 minutes, someone finally came to ask if you were thirsty, and it took another 20 minutes for you to actually get it. After that, you have to wait at least an hour for someone to look at you long enough to realize you might want to order something to eat. The food then took another 45 minutes to arrive, a clever tactic, of course, because when you're starving, everything tastes good pretty quickly. We inquired, but this was correct because they charged a bit more for Christmas, and again, the supplier was to blame... 5 pieces of beef was the "normal" Christmas portion...! We had dinner on Boxing Day. What a disappointment. Where the table is normally full, we were served a very limited menu on Boxing Day, but at a very high price, over €68 per person. The children's menu was €26.50 (fries with a side dish). We had ordered lobster soup beforehand, which arrived later. It was inedible, so we sent it back. Unfriendly staff; it was a very disappointing experience. It had a good reputation, but we won't be returning anytime soon.

CHRISTMAS DAY, LAST CHRISTMAS DAY 6:35 PM. It's Christmas Day and we've only been here for five minutes. In those five minutes, we've already experienced the following: a waiter with a face like a thunderstorm and a menu nearly thrown on the table by the same man. Sitting there in your beautiful Christmas clothes. I could have stopped myself. But his colleague told me I wouldn't be getting a starter because, unfortunately, I'm allergic to shrimp and egg. After an hour and another 15 minutes, during which we still hadn't received a drink after asking three times, we were finally fed up. We left the building. Nice Balinese experience, tried the "grote rijsttafel" (lit: big rice table, or large thali) with many different little dishes with a satisfying covering of Dutch/Indonesian/Balinese traditional food. Warm atmosphere, friendly and charming staff in traditional garb, quick and efficient service. Too bad about the use of Seitan in two of the dishes, would have appreciated tofu and tempeh, seitan feels a bit cheap and also heavy on the system. Nice visit nonetheless.

For true lovers of authentic Indonesian cuisine, this restaurant is the absolute pinnacle. They also offer a selection of vegetarian and fish dishes. The menu has clearly been compiled with great care and passion. The drink selection is also excellent. Hospitality and Expertise are rightly capitalized here. A household name for years. Charming decor and ambiance. Reasonable, affordable prices. In short, a genuine recommendation to visit this acclaimed restaurant. Enjoy it, and you certainly won't regret it.

Unfortunately, a bad review. The service is poor; they don't speak English, and your orders don't come through correctly. The rijsttafel (rice table) arrives after two minutes, but I also ordered an a la carte dish, and it didn't arrive until my table companions had finished theirs. Many dishes are taken away, which is annoying when you're sitting in the restaurant. I ordered the Ikan Pepesan mackerel, but it was cold inside after the long preparation time. Bali James is an institution in Breda! I've been coming here my whole life, and the food just keeps getting better. The new chef (who's been here for a while, I think) has added some fantastic dishes to the menu, which are super fresh and flavorful. The food is spicy where needed and not too sweet like some other Indonesian restaurants in the Netherlands. Definitely recommended, especially for the atmosphere and the friendly service.

We had a great meal. We opted for the large rijsttafel (rice table). The dishes were delicious and more than enough for us. The staff was friendly. Initially, it took a long time to get served, but after that, everything went smoothly. I didn't think the price-quality ratio was quite right. The food was initially okay, until someone at our table found a larva in the rice. After that, of course, our appetite was gone. We were apologized for and asked if we wanted it taken off the bill or if we wanted new meat without rice. I opted for new meat, but the person ultimately didn't eat it. What I found disappointing was that nothing more was offered to make up for it. I find that very poor for a restaurant. Unfortunately, it wasn't a pleasant experience, and I won't be returning.

I'm not a big fan of Indonesian food but there were some good things.

Made a reservation for a group of 11. We got a table quickly and then spent half an hour being ignored by disinterested staff. The staff didn't listen well, resulting in incorrect orders that were added to the bill. "Misunderstanding," was the response. But the bill remained the same. The staff all sat at the bar drinking beer, completely disinterested in departing guests. A waste of an experience, as the food was good.

Poor service, there were 8 people, but only got food for 4. We waited an hour for our drinks, and when they arrived, the wrong drinks arrived. The staff were grumpy because they had to fix it. You had to get your own drinks. The table hadn't been cleared yet, and the bill was already ready. We didn't even get a chance to order dessert. We confronted the owner, and there was no discussion, only dollar signs in her eyes and she threatened to call the police. We lost 485 euros and left hungry, so NEVER AGAIN for us.

It was so bad it took almost half an hour before we had a drink...the food was bizarrely little, there were 8 people, they literally ripped us off, what you normally get for food, we now only got for 4 people, but we had to pay for 8 people, so well deserved. Unfortunately, I didn't have a good experience with this restaurant. There were two of us, and we were seated in a corner next to the coat check, completely blinded by a large screen. Then we waited an hour for a large rijsttafel (rice table). Then the food arrived, and it was lukewarm/cold, even though the air conditioning was on. I reported it, only to be met with an "oh, and I walked away." They didn't even ask if everything was okay. While clearing another table, someone asked if they enjoyed it. I again mentioned that the food was cold. Unfortunately, they didn't do anything about it. Never again. It's a shame, because you pay a lot for it.

I went here for dinner with my father and his brothers, and my niece and her husband. All Indo people. When I read the other reviews about the customer service, I hesitated for a moment, but luckily, there was nothing negative to say. We received a very friendly welcome and were regularly asked if everything was to our liking. We chose the large Indonesian rice table, and I highly recommend it. If I'm ever in Breda again, I'll definitely come back.

10jaar geleden zijn we hier voor het laatst geweest, wat me bij was gebleven was een warme en gezellige uitstraling. Vandaag maar weer eens een keertje naar Breda gereden om bij Bali te eten. Bij binnenkomst een vriendelijk ontvangst, ondanks dat we 20 minuten te vroeg waren direct een plekje gekregen. Het plekje is aan de voorkant van het restaurant, niet het meest geschikte plekje. De achterzijde straalt meer sfeer uit. De Nederlandse menu’s waren op, we moeten het doen met de Engelse versie. Laten we het simpel houden en gewoon de grote rijsttafel nemen. Als beginnen de kroepoek met satésaus, deze was een beetje waterig. We hebben maar om sambal gevraagd, deze kwam op een schoteltje met 2 varianten. De rijsttafel kwam 20minuten later, deze bestaat uit een groot aantal gerechten en de gebakken banaan mocht niet ontbreken. Niets vernieuwends waargenomen, weet niet of dit gewenst is. Het eten heeft smaak, echter niets bijzonders, aan de flauwe kant. Het eten moet warm gehouden worden door de rechauds (op kaarsje), tot onze spijt koelt het eten snel af en is zelfs al lauw voor we halverwege zijn. Gerechten worden snel koud op de plaat. We zouden het niet aanraden maar ook niet afraden om hier te gaan eten. Ligt meer aan de verwachting die er bij heerst, voor ons lijkt het nu meer op een eet schuur. Maar mogelijk is onze romantiek van 10 jaar geleden wel bij gebleven.

We hebben hier heerlijk gegeten, geen rijsttafel maar à la carte. De bediening is heel vriendelijk en checkt regelmatig of je nog iets nodig hebt. Maar we vinden de prijzen erg hoog. Garnalen koop je per stuk, saté van vier garnalen met twee eetlepels saté saus kost daardoor meer dan 20 euro. Daar krijg je verder niets bij. Bij alle hoofdgerechten moet je de rijst apart bijbestellen. Een schaaltje witte rijst: 6 euro! Ik heb heerlijke Urap Urap gegeten, maar 16 euro betaald voor een schaaltje sperziebonen, taugé en wat kokos er overheen. Jammer!

The service of this restaurant could be much better. It is very strange that they do not answer questions via e-mail. They also stand behind the table all the time to check if everything is in order. Very annoying and strange. The food itself is fine, only if you do not order a rijsttafel it is delivered later than the rest and it did not fit on the table. Even if the entire restaurant is almost empty (on a Saturday) they still put you next to a full table which is annoying. It is also not clear which dish you will get at the rijsttafel because it is simply placed in front of you, without indicating what it is. Conclusion: Food is fine, service is terrible.

Op zaterdag einde middag met defensie vriendengroep weer eens heerlijk genoten van de blauwe hap. Wij kozen voor de grote rijsttafel. Heerlijk veel verschillende gerechten én smaken. De moeite waard.

Extremely unfriendly staff. Couldn't even ask for something normal. Food for that price extremely expensive. Very little. 4 small satay sticks for 12.60.. ridiculous. Will never go here again

We hebben genoten. Hele vriendelijke bediening, op het gemakje gezeten, heerlijke rijsttafel. (en wij zijn kenners;))

More of a feeding shack than a good Indonesian restaurant. We were not warmly welcomed. We ordered 5 large rice tables, however all meat dishes came in portions for 2 max 3 people. We asked if this was correct, this would be checked but we did not get any feedback. The vegetables were in abundance, but with a lot of moisture. A tasty meal was not possible. There was also little chance to order something to drink. After eating we decided to leave quickly. A huge disappointment unfortunately!

Picked up Rendang with white rice for 22.90!! So the white rice costs 7 euros, dry barley rendang, no sauce! This together with white rice is even drier! Never again

We bestelden de grote rijsttafel voor 2 personen, één keer het nieuwe “menu ikan laut heek” en één keer een à la carte gerecht. De rijsttafel werd opgediend en ons werd “eet smakelijk” gewenst. Huh? Waar zijn de andere bestellingen? Na 5 minuten kwam het “menu ikan laut heek” en nog eens 5 minuten later het à la carte gerecht en de anderen maar wachten; getuigd van een slechte planning. Tijdens het eten is ons niet één keer gevraagd of het ons smaakte en of we nog iets wilden drinken. Dit laatste hebben we tot 2 keer toe zelf moeten vragen. Het eten daarentegen is prima en toen we tot slot vroegen of we het eten wat we niet hadden opgemaakt, mochten meenemen, gaf de bediening ons plastic bakjes en succes ermee. Ik had toch wel verwacht dat zij dat voor ons als gasten zouden verzorgen….niet echt gastvrij. Dus…goed eten, maar een slechte bediening.

Unfortunately a bad experience this time. I ordered a filleted fish, it would be 500/600 grams. First of all, there were still many large pieces of bone in it (these could not even be called bones) and there was really not much fish. This was also immediately indicated at the operator. He took the pieces of bone to the kitchen. Then he didn't come back either. I thought they would handle this nicely, I actually expected a new fish, something reduced in price or a drink on the house. But none of this. So this was also the last time here!

I have been eating here for 40 years but yesterday the food was so bad. The meat dishes were very tough and dry and sometimes not hot enough. The vegetable dishes were also not particularly tasty.

Favorite Indonesian Restaurant in my since 1968 favorite city Breda, to be revisited soon by Cor 'Ardenneman'...

Delicious food. Much better than any Chinese-Indian restaurant.

It was ok to mediocre. What ruined everything is the 2 thin slices of bacon biscuit with the coffee that cost no less than 5.90. We won't come again.

Delicious !!!!!!! Here you can really relax and eat in a great atmosphere. We had a rice table, which was certainly a feast and delicious. The staff wears traditional costumes, gives just that little bit more, and is all very friendly. So highly recommended.

Het was alweer een aantal jaar geleden dat ik bij Bali James had gereserveerd. Vandaag met mijn ouders (mijn pa is een Indo van Soerabaja) hier een grote rijsttafel voor vier personen genomen. Met recht een grote rijsttafel. Grote variëteit in groente- en vleesgerechtjes. Royale porties. Uitgesproken smaken. En vooral echt pittig. Prijs-kwaliteit verhouding is uitstekend. Authentieke Indische bediening. Blijft een aanrader voor liefhebbers van de Indonesische keuken.

Kwaliteit is goed maar niet top Prijs voor een kleine rijsttafel 35 euro niet in verhouding van de kwaliteit Wijn in vieze vette glazen

Takeaway: Really bad. The tofu was very watery. Babi ketjap was more like large chunks of fat than meat. The ayam besengek sauce was very watery and lacking in flavor. Called the restaurant and they couldn't do anything. Dishes very expensive for what you get

Wat was dit slecht! Vroeger een top restaurant. We zaten aan het room en het was koud. Het eten hele kleine porties, lauw geserveerd slechte bediening. Daarbij is het nog heel duur ook. Geen afrader maar een waarschuwing. Ga er niet meer naar toe het is gewoon veel te duur en super slecht.

Heel teleurstellend. Tijdens de reservering werd niet vermeld dat er uitsluitend een menu opgediend zou worden. De perkedel werd bevroren geserveerd. Rundvlees was heel droog en de kreeft heel erg matig. De bediening was abnormaal slecht. Het eerste drankje kwam na 35 minuten. Op het nagerecht nog 35 minuten gewacht en was er toen nog niet. Zonder nagerecht vertrokken. Heel erg duur voor slechte kwaliteit en zeer slechte bediening. Niet voor herhaling vatbaar.

Very poor service, we were 10 people and had to wait a long time for drinks and the food was not warm and we had already had half of the ice cream and the rest had to wait a long time and was way too expensive for what you get, not recommended, never again.

wat een desillusie, de sfeer is compleet uit het restaurant. slecht personeel, slecht eten. de oude eigenaar en personeel zorgden voor de mystieke, relaxte sfeer met uitermate goed eten.laatste paar jaar niet geweest , maar honderden malen hier gegeten .wilde graag op kerstavond zoals vroeger, hier nog graag een keer eten. we hadden 2 grote rijsttafels, bami en extra sateetjes. de sateetjes waren koud, de bami veel te heet qua peper.. niet lekker pittig gekruid. de gerechtjes haalden het niet bij wat het ooit was. droog rundvlees, groene gekookte eieren, snotgekookte spercieboontjes en alles lag in het “water” zeer zwaar aangelengd dus, fruit in een soort onopgeloste bruine brij etc etc. nee nooit meer daar eten , euro 165 voor 3 personen echt veel te duur voor hetgeen wat je krijgt. jammer daar gaat mijn “jeugd” sentiment.
