Home away from home. Lovely owners who serve home cooked food - I always make a visit here when travelling and it’s always the same - home cooked food!

Excellent food at a good price, friendly staff, and a lovely atmosphere. Would absolutely recommend coming here.

Having worked in India and sampled their food first hand I had a good idea what I wanted and the Balraj did not disappoint, food was fantastic and the service was excellent This is the best Indian meal I have had outside of India, 86% of Indian restaurants in the uk are Bangladeshi and add their take on it which in my opinion is not the same If you are in Amsterdam I highly recommend a visit to the Balraj

A must try verry unique and perfect hidden gem from variety of veggies to non veg all have a choice there . A must try great service and food

Excellent food, fast service with a very friendly owner. My wife and I split the Rogan Josh with garlic naan and it was perfectly seasoned and delicious. Our meal with two beers was about 30€. Highly recommend

I had potato eggplant dish and a tomato chutney dish, both of them were awesome, carful! Don’t choose the max spicy level its will be so spicy that you won’t finish the dish without drinking cups and cups of water (even for the Asians)

Me and my husband wanted to try out this place. Absolutely delicious food! Also had a lovely chat with the owner, such an amazing atmosphere! The restaurant was peaceful with quiet background music, just the way we like it!

best indian food i’ve ever had. it was so fresh and flavorful. even though i didn’t order it, they gave me some dal with my meal which complemented everything perfectly. centrally located and everything came out quickly. highly recommend.

Balraj is hands down my go-to Indian restaurant in Amsterdam. It’s the oldest in the city, and they serve the best butter chicken I’ve ever had. The staff is super friendly, and the restaurant is always incredibly clean. You can tell they really take pride in what they do.

My partner and I came across this little Indian restaurant while visiting another business on the street. With both of us being lovers of Indian cuisine, we had to check this restaurant out. What an lovely place, with the kind owner greeting and serving us. We enjoyed a wonderful meal. Later we found out that we were at Amsterdam’s oldest Indian restaurant that has served international diplomats.

Excellent chicken curry Madras, spinach and yellow rice. Recommended!

The starter was nice, cheese nans. Tandoori chicken I did find average but the other dishes were overall good.

Una noche después de un día ajetreado de turismo y a la llegada el olor del restaurante era increíble! El personal era encantador y tenía una gran relación calidad-precio. Recomendaría encarecidamente si estás en la zona para probar este encantador restaurante de gestión familiar.

Very nice restaurant… a jug of water was allowed and the food was delicious. We had a nice long chat there and we felt very welcome.

The staff at Balraj was really friendly and the food was good.

Attentive staff, overall the aroma and feel of the place is great. Our group ordered a chicken Briyani, lamb Briyani and 2 butter chickens. The Briyani’s were great along with their raita however the butter chicken was sub par. Maybe I’m just too used to spicier butter chickens and this restaurant caters to the Dutch palate but that was probably the only dish I was a little disappointed in. (Cuz I love my butter chicken) So, to conclude, nice Indian restaurant, good Briyani, generous with their papadam btw, and lastly, quite affordable for Amsterdam standards.

The bhaji, and butter chicken had no flavour. Would not recommend.

We hebben hier met ons bezoek aan Amsterdam gegeten. Via Tripadvisor hier gekomen. Heerlijk gegeten en de bediening was heel vriendelijk. Echte aanrader voor Indiaas restaurant. Enige nadeel is het harde geluid doordat alles dicht op elkaar staat, maar dat is volgens mij bij elk Indiaas restaurant. Top!

The tastiest butter chicken in Amsterdam with, of course, a garlic naan fresh from the tandoori oven. Nice people and fast service.

We had a delicious meal! The Saag Paneer and butter chicken are highly recommended. You taste the love in the food. This was one of the best meals we've had at an Indian restaurant. The Saag Paneer and Butter Chicken were heavenly. You really taste the love they put in it.

Lovely food and - luckily for me - also enough choice of not so hot dishes. Loved the butter chicken. For desert I had Badaam Kulfi, which was a totally new taste experience for me (almond ice, very good).

Scelta azzeccata. Pollo e gamberi, entrambi tandoori con il tipico contorno di riso basmati e lenticchie. Birra indiana in bottiglia. Gelato alle nocciole e cardamomo con pareri discordanti. Amaro offerto. Conto equilibrato. Consigliato!

We arrived after 22:00pm and still got food. Super nice service and smiling people. The food is very tasty and was ready after 10 Minutes. Not expensive and normal portions. It was perfect, very recommendable.

Lekkerste Samosa ooit! Heel vers, twee keer besteld. Wij eten regelmatig indiaas, maar we hebben nu een pareltje gevonden. Super vriendelijk personeel, heerlijk eten...Wel reserveren anders loop je de kans teleurgesteld te worden. Druk bezet restaurantje. We zullen zeker met regelmaat terug komen. Yummie!

Great Indian. Very nice service. Dal soup and butter chicken are very tasty. On this Friday evening it was quite full with some busy groups, but it was not disturbing, rather pleasantly busy. You sit at tables of 4 in a row, and there are also a few extra tables on the side. Drinks and appetizers arrive on the table very quickly. Very nice service from the engaging lady. Main courses took a little longer but were worth the wait. Delicious flavors, both the chicken and vegetarian dishes are very tasty. Dal dishes may be replenished when they run out. In other words: one of, or perhaps the best, Indian in Amsterdam. Give it a chance and be pampered by this cuisine that is thousands of years old

When I come to Amsterdam I always eat there once! I discovered this restaurant 20 years ago by chance and it's still the same owner and family! It has existed since 1977.... everything is said.... the best Indian I have tried and I have tried many... the butter chicken is a delight.... if you go to Amsterdam try it yourself will not be disappointed!

Heerlijk eten en vriendelijke mensen. Alle gerechten waren zeer smaakvol en lekker gekruid. Ook het naan brood (garlic) is om je vingers bij op te eten. Reden genoeg om terug te komen of eten af te halen.

Amazing Indian. We loved the butter chicken, it was the best we've ever had. Got it with the garlic naan and came with rice and daal. Pot of chai is great. Delicious meal, would return and recommend. Easy to get in and staff was very nice.

Wat een fijne plek om te eten. De service is waanzinnig. Vriendelijk personeel. Klant is koning, deze mentaliteit hebben ze nog. En dat zie je niet meer vaak. Ook het eten was verrukkelijk! Alles is vers, zelfs de garnering van slablaadjes. Ik kan niet anders zeggen dan dat wij hier heerlijk authentiek gegeten hebben, en komen zeker terug. Bedankt!

Wij komen hier al zeker 15 jaar. Wat een aardige lieve mensen en echt Indiaas eten met authentieke smaken zoals het hoort. Wat ons betreft maakt het niet uit wat je bestelt, het is alemaal top. Porties zijn prima en als je over hebt vraag je de rest mee voor thuis, kan ook gewoon. Tot snel weer!

Lovely food. Lovely owners. Maybe not the absolute best Indian food I’ve ever had in Holland (there’s just a lot of competition…), but Balraj is in the top 5 for sure. I immediately felt at ease and welcomed as soon as I stepped inside. The interior is a little bit shabby, but it’s okay. I ordered a fish tikka. Got a nice side of dal with my main. The curry was great. The fish maybe not so much, but I’ll let that one slide. The average Dutchman might have found it spicy for sure, even though it was only medium spicy. I liked it! You’ll definitely be seeing us again. :)

Fantastic food and super friendly service!

Wenn ich als Tourist, der nie in Indien war, in ein indisches Restaurant gehe, dann ist mir die Frische und die Qualität der Speisen wichtig. Das kann ich beurteilen und beides habe ich hier gefunden. Gemütliche Atmosphäre, nicht überladen und bei unserem Besuch leise angenehme Musik. Dazu die nette Bedienung durch den Besitzer selber, also keine Kette. Das Lokal hat uns 100% überzeugt, wir werden wieder dort essen gehen, sollten wir wieder in Amsterdam sein.

Wat hebben wij lekker gegeten. Wij hebben de keuze van het eten overgelaten aan de gastheer. Het eten was echt heel erg lekker. Mijn favoriete de butter chicken maar de Masala was ook echt top. Het was echt een smaak explosie. Ik ga zeker terugkomen

Good food, including vegan options and willingness to cater to allergies. Love a pineapple cauliflower dish. Was in a group of 12 people so can't really give feedback on speed; the staff seemed slightly distracted that day. But i would for sure go back.

After an exhausting journey , time for lunch at Balraj Indian restaurant run by Jalandhar district family . Food very delicious and homemade like , personnel soft spoken , friendly , good ambience with melodious old Hindi and Punjabi songs playing on stereo . Value for money .
