Excellent location, really lovely atmosphere. Prices are indeed quite high; there's potential to make it more affordable for families. I ordered a pot of coffee for over €5, advertised as an XL coffee, but it was just a fairly regular coffee, half-filled in a large pot. The location and atmosphere, however, are truly fantastic 🙋‍♀️. The service was also very friendly.

In hindsight, I should have relied on the reviews... the food was mediocre. The Beef Teriyaki wasn't very flavorful. While one person had a few pieces of meat, another had almost no meat at all. The Catch of the Day was a small piece of fish with a few pieces of potatoes and some vegetables. Only the Smash Burger was, by what we heard, delicious. Fortunately, it came with fries, and for those who found it a bit much, the rest could share. We took another look at the menu for dessert... but considering the quantity of the main course and the price, we decided to leave it at that. Back at the holiday home, we just grabbed a tub of ice cream from the freezer.

The food was okay, but the waiters barely paid any attention to us and didn't give us cutlery, serving dishes, or salt. We only had fries, but the table service at the tables next to us was much more attentive in comparison. Also, the food was very expensive.

The location is great and it's more than okay for drinks. €15 for a gin tonic is quite steep. The food, however, is mediocre and offers poor value for money. I read about house water. We had to pay €7 for a can of water. Drinks are okay, but we eat somewhere else.

We went to the beach bar on a Thursday evening. The prices are high, we knew that before we went, but what you get for your money is still incredibly disappointing. We had the "Smash Burger" and the Burrata Pizza. The burger patty was quite well-seasoned, but its consistency was more like a reheated meatball. The brioche bun was so dry (not just dry-toasted, but completely dry) that it splattered all over my plate when I tried to eat it with my fork. The pizza was clearly a pre-baked pizza; the crust and base were very thin, which some might like, but they were also rock hard, so the base just crumbled when you tried to cut it. The crust was inedible. The drinks were okay, you can't really go wrong with them, but the prices were completely exorbitant (a glass of water for €5). On the other hand, the service was very friendly and efficient, and we felt welcome. The view was wonderful, of course, but unfortunately the food wasn't.

Sunset lunch to share for 3. Nice variety of dishes, excellent virgin cocktails for the teenagers. Had a lovely time sitting and eating.

We were not allowed to sit on the terrace for a drink, only inside. This despite the fact that there were plenty of free spots on the terrace! We found it very unwelcoming and left. We watched the sunset from the beach. A little later, the music was blaring on the terrace, so we ended up sitting more quietly on the beach.

This just isn't acceptable anymore. Of course it's full, the island is full, and a tourist is less critical. But seriously, the staff speaks English and there is nothing wrong with that, it is just the stoic service that is characteristic. There is a DJ for the atmosphere, not for having a normal conversation. Way too loud [boomer]. And 5.60 for a Coke. Seriously? We're leaving it at that and leaving somewhat dismayed anyway. They no longer know what kind of tourists come to the island, mainly families with children. And prepare yourself for that. Good luck.

Beautiful location, amazing sunset

We visited twice during our stay on Ameland. The staff were definitely holiday workers and not experienced in the restaurant business, but they were all incredibly friendly and attentive. We had almost no wait after ordering, and the bitterballen were delicious. On a very stormy day, we went for coffee. The cake wasn't exactly cheap, but what can you expect given the location? It was a feast for the eyes and very tasty (9 euros with cream and a scoop of ice cream). The wind blew in some sand, so we decided to eat quickly. I would go back anytime to enjoy a coffee in a lovely atmosphere with a great view. We also loved the decor.

I generally don't like posting a negative review, but I'll do it anyway. We went there for lunch recently, just the two of us. I had already read on several menus that Ameland has its own bitterballen and croquettes. Made with beef from Ameland cows. So I decided to order 2 croquettes with bread. The price was a whopping 15 euros, but okay, it's vacation and I wanted to taste those croquettes anyway. The menu stated: forget Van Dobben and De Bourgondiër, these are the croquettes, or words to that effect. What did I get after 25 minutes? 2 small croquettes with 2 slices of bread, some green garnish, and mustard. The croquettes were downright tasteless. Which isn't surprising in itself, because the temperature was at most 40-45 degrees. This is normally well above 100 degrees, since the fat is at least 170 degrees. Either they had been left to cool for 20 minutes, or they came straight from the freezer and were under-fried. Given the light color, I think it's the latter. And the amount of meat was just as non-existent as in a regular croquette these days, not even half a finger joint. Since we didn't feel like waiting another 25 minutes, I just didn't say anything. That the waiter didn't ask if we enjoyed it didn't surprise me; naturally, I was afraid of the answer. A waiter who didn't say good afternoon or anything like that at all. Clearly wasn't in the mood. As a rare exception, I didn't leave a tip.

Good facilities, but on the pricey side

In itself, a nice place for drinks. However, it is a bit grubby and messy, as is the service. You constantly have to get the staff's attention if you need anything. The food was okay, but the BBQ chicken was not what I expected (a bland piece of chicken breast instead of a nice smoky piece of chicken with a crispy crust). The presentation was sad. A large scoop of white rice and a few slices of cucumber on the side. Dessert was tasty, but also messily presented. For 150 euros for a meal for three, I found the experience somewhat disappointing.

Excellent service and a very pleasant atmosphere, including a fantastic sea view! The food arrived quickly and tasted great. Prices are perfectly reasonable, and the staff is very attentive and friendly! What I also appreciated was that the children were given coloring pages and crayons right away – the little ones immediately felt welcome.

What a fantastic place! Very pricey. Unfortunately, the food (fish platter for EUR 96!) for 3 people was very mediocre. A few prawns, an oyster, a slice of sashimi each, two pieces of sushi each, a wafer-thin piece of smoked fish, and three pieces of bread….

Had a delicious burger that was truly gluten-free. And the staff here were really friendly too. Eating with a sea view, what more could you ask for??

A really beautiful shop in a really nice location. Bus stop right outside the door, and if you come by car, you can park for free in the general parking lot.

The main server/cashier was unfriendly/disinterested, which ruined the nice atmosphere. Tables weren't wiped down. The waiter was nice and friendly.

Beautiful spot! Had a lovely time, although it did take a bit long before someone came by to take our order. Otherwise, the staff was friendly. I read a lot about it being pricey; earlier in the day we had nachos somewhere else on the island for 4 euros less, but those weren't as tasty as these and the portion was smaller too. So we thought it wasn't too bad for what you get! Had a delicious meal.

Unfortunately, this was disappointing. According to Google, the beach bar should be open until 11:00 PM – this information was only updated a few weeks ago. Despite this, we were turned away shortly before 9:00 PM, even though we only wanted a drink. If they close earlier, the opening hours should be adjusted accordingly. This would save guests an unnecessary trip and disappointment.

According to the opening hours listed on their website, the beach bar is supposed to be open daily until 11 p.m. When we wanted to have a drink shortly before 9 p.m., we were asked to leave because it was already closing. We understand that the kitchen closes early. However, we found it disappointing that no more drinks were served, even though the website indicated it would be open for another two hours. If the bar closes early, the published opening hours should be adjusted accordingly so that guests can rely on them.

This place is fantastic. Great to relax during vacation.

We were here on vacation and were initially drawn to the restaurant because of its location. The extremely high prices (presumably due to the location) are one thing, but the quality has to match. Unfortunately, we were somewhat disappointed. The children ordered chicken nuggets. These were unfortunately very spicy due to the excessive amount of pepper in the recipe. Even for us adults, it was borderline too spicy. Far too spicy for a dish marketed as a children's meal. The burger meat was almost rare, which didn't bother us, but you should ask about this beforehand as it's not to everyone's taste. The burger itself, however, was very tasty. The apple spritzer for €6 was simply still water mixed with a hint of apple juice flavoring. We were looking forward to an Aperol Spritz, but after looking at the menu, we lost interest, as €13 was a lot of money. Sorry, the place has a lot of potential, but unfortunately, it doesn't live up to it.

The Sunset Beach Club is located in a truly beautiful spot with a stunning view of the sea. Because of this, our expectations were understandably high. Unfortunately, the service significantly affected the overall experience. I don’t understand why someone chooses to work in hospitality if they give guests the feeling of not being welcome. Friendliness is, in my opinion, a basic requirement when visiting a restaurant. Instead of a pleasant atmosphere, we experienced a rather negative vibe – and this in one of the most beautiful locations on Ameland. What was particularly confusing was the waiting time for our food. We visited outside of the main season, when the restaurant was almost empty with only about four tables occupied. Still, we could clearly see our pasta and fries sitting on the counter for around 20 minutes before being served. This is hard to understand and not acceptable in terms of food quality or guest experience. In addition, we ordered a “large bottle” of water but were served a can instead. I have honestly never experienced something like that before. If a requested item is unavailable, guests should at least be informed and given the option to agree to an alternative. On top of that, the prices are quite high. At this price level, one would expect attentive service and a smooth, professional operation. The food itself was okay, nothing more. The beautiful location alone is not enough to make up for these shortcomings. A real shame, as the place clearly has the potential to be something special.

Ridiculously expensive, a cocktail consisting of 95% ice for €15. Barely had a sip. Price-quality is really a 1 out of 5. A waste of money unfortunately, be careful what you order here.

Visited twice in the low season, June 2026. Friendly service, though sometimes it took a bit long before someone came by again. The bitterballen with cheese and chorizo ​​are delicious and nicely spicy. It is a pity that the bar snacks here are also designed for a minimum of 2 people. The benches with good cushions are very comfortable, and it is nice that there are power outlets to charge your phone. Here too, the staff are English-speaking; that is just how it is. Prices are on the average side for a beach bar. It could all be a bit better, and you would have received 5 stars.

Ordered coffee for 7 people, at €6 per cup; on the menu it is even listed as Coffee XL, but no, it was just a regular cup of coffee, which was already almost cold when we received it, €43 for 7 cups of cold coffee. We did mention that the coffee was cold, but they didn't want to do anything about it.....

Nice beach club where dogs are welcome. The food isn't cheap (beach club) but it is good, and the portions are generous (Tostie XL). The service is pleasant, and fast too, especially if you order via the QR code.

The location is beautiful, the decor is lovely, and the view is amazing. The prices are ridiculously high. €5.60 for a 33 cl can of cola. Chicken sandwich for €19. And if the food is really good, you get away with it…. The toasted sandwich was half-cooked, the neighbors got cold fries, and you order using a QR code. It is such a shame that the prices are absolutely unjustifiable.

It was tasty, though pricey. House water, that's great!!! We were also pleasantly surprised by the portion size. The smashburger was a bit disappointing in terms of taste, but otherwise it was good. I also found the chicken breast dry at times, but the generous amount of sauce and fresh vegetables made up for this. 1 glass of Chardonnay, 1 Weisseiner, 1 glass of water, smashburger & chicken bun came to €60..

Delicious cocktails! Been here twice, it looks really beautiful and you can sit very comfortably on the terrace. Lovely decor and the drinks and small dishes were perfect!

Good food, though pricey. Fortunately, you can order using a QR code. Because the staff are completely inattentive, so they never come by. Also, almost none of them speak Dutch... Very annoying. It was very hot, but they didn't ask if the dog wanted water.

Lovely little terrace to sit on.

Acceptable food and a nice view, but that's about it. Staff wear stained shirts and the reusable napkins (read: white tea towels) are stained. Staff deliver the wrong dishes and then come to your table to sigh about how heavy they are. It is also not possible to take leftovers home.

It was super busy and I was seated at a table with 2 different groups. The food was good, but the drinks were a real shame because they took so long, even the nachos arrived early, and then they came to tell me that the dark rum Nobel was sold out... (you could have told me much earlier).

Beautiful location but terrible service and grossly overpriced. The ‘fresh’ orange juice tasted like Appelsientje with pulp, and the Sunset lunch for two was barely enough for one person. If you charge these kinds of prices (almost 7 euros for a soft drink and 20 euros p.p. for a lunch plate), make sure everything is perfect and tastes top-notch. We will not be coming back here.

Great location, but unfortunately the food and drinks are overpriced for the mediocre quality. The fish & chips were rock hard, and the tagine consisted mainly of tomato sauce. The burgers were good, though. All in all, not recommended for dining, but it is a nice location to grab a quick drink.

Sigbren helped me give my proposal the perfect ending! I proposed to my fiancée on the beach in Ameland, and afterwards we had dinner at Sunset. After discussing it with them, they fulfilled almost every wish, and we even got our favorite dessert plus incredibly delicious sushi rolls. The champagne reception was also planned as a surprise. I can highly recommend them to everyone!!!

A far too expensive beach bar that absolutely does not meet normal standards when it comes to food. A fish salad containing 6 small shrimp and a minimal white fish without mackerel, which is listed for €26, is scandalous. The location is beautiful, but the food and drinks are far too expensive.

I got engaged on the beach, and we celebrated our engagement here afterward with just a few close friends and family. It was absolutely beautiful. The atmosphere and the view were simply perfect for this special moment, but what truly impressed us was the team. Every little detail was taken care of, everything was incredibly relaxed yet attentive. We felt completely at ease. This place will always hold a special place in our hearts because we associate it with one of the most beautiful moments of our lives 🤍 We would come back in a heartbeat and wholeheartedly recommend it.

After a lovely walk with the dog on Ameland's endless beach, we went to the beach club "The Sunset" to watch the sunset. The prices are high, but the view is truly beautiful.

We must have arrived at the wrong time, a lovely Sunday afternoon for the terrace, although it wasn't packed. Several customers struggled to get attention to order or pay. For the price level, you would certainly expect better service, let alone that there is much more to be gained from it from a business perspective. The staff could definitely use more training or leadership. Perhaps our expectations were too high after all the information on the website, but unfortunately, this was a one-time experience and we won't be repeating it.

Beautiful and nice location. Friendly service. The food was decent but not great. The flounder was watery and lean, the fries lukewarm, the hamburger was tasty. And that for quite a hefty price. So the price-quality ratio was not right. A shame.

On Sunday, April 12, we settled down on the lovely terrace for lunch. A beautiful spot. Nicely decorated inside. We ordered tea and lunch dishes. The tea was served in large, but sparsely filled glasses. Lukewarm! The lunch dishes were delicious. We complained afterwards. A friendly young lady, after consulting with an invisible chef, offered to serve another 2 cups of tea, but we wanted to move on. High prices are fine if you offer a nice experience for them. That failed here. Shoddy work.

I sat waiting for over 35 minutes in a filthy, noisy place. No staff came by. When I asked via the toilet if I could order something, someone shouted something at me in English. I left disappointed and went for a drink 150m down the road. Actually, I'm glad about it, because the prices on that terrace are sky high. They'll just see me walking past there again.

Betty is a very nice server. The service is remarkable. The wine and calamari were highly recommended.

The location alone is reason enough to go there. In my opinion, it's one of the most beautiful spots on Ameland. The restaurant is okay, relatively expensive, but that's not such a big deal during the holidays. For the past few years, we've always gone there for the nachos, but this year they've changed the recipe… unfortunately. They still tasted good, but why do I have to eat Korean-style nachos on Ameland when they used to be incredibly delicious? I have no idea… The staff sometimes seem a bit awkward and disorganized; from the owner's perspective, better organization would certainly generate more revenue. But I was there as a guest, not an operator. All in all, I think it's a very nice place to relax and enjoy the sun. The seating is sheltered from the wind, and there used to be a fire at each table, but they haven't lit them since this year; presumably, gas prices have gone up here too… It's a shame, because it creates such a cozy and inviting atmosphere.

Most beautiful location for sunsets in Ameland. Unfortunately, the quality of food & service shrinked over the last couple years so I‘ll only give two stars.

Unfortunately, a less-than-stellar experience. The first time, everything was a bit chaotic and the tables on the terrace weren't clean. That can happen, of course, due to the crowds. The price was very high, but oh well, it's probably right. Another attempt the next day. Everyone deserves a second chance. We were allowed to choose a spot. The table we wanted to sit at was wiped down a bit, but there was still a thick blob of sauce from the previous visitors. So we went outside after all. Again, the tables weren't clean, no tablecloths, and a cold cappuccino that I had to wait way too long for. The pastry was very tasty, but even though I had ordered without whipped cream, there was still a thick dollop on it. Oh well, I do like whipped cream and didn't feel like getting annoyed any further. Paying at the cashier takes forever. Two other couples behind me to pay, and no one came forward. They just kept doing their own thing. A real shame, this is a missed opportunity. And we won't be getting another chance.

On Betty's recommendation and served by Betty herself, we had oven-baked salted sea bass, and it was wonderful. A highly recommended experience. Thank you. Grit and Jens

We had a great early evening again! Year on year great service, great drinks and perfect sunset!

A very fancy atmosphere, perfect for watching the sunset. The service was excellent, especially from the waitress Beatriz.

Beautiful location, but today the service was terrible. After we got a table, it took at least fifteen minutes before our drinks order was taken. We then indicated that we were going to look at the lunch menu as well. After that, it took half an hour for the drinks to arrive. A flat beer. The staff was confused, didn't know what was for which table, and didn't ask about lunch again. Around us, crockery was piling up, people were leaving, and there were lots of fellow waitrs. We thought: never mind. In short: you can sit here for a few hours without being disturbed ;)

After a long bike ride, we ordered a beer and a glass of wine. We left it at that, since we had to pay 9.90 euros for the glass of wine.

De Sunset is a beautiful location, but unfortunately, you can no longer order apple pie well before closing time because the kitchen closes as staff have to be deployed elsewhere. Tough times in the hospitality industry.
