Incredibly rude staff, hostile immediately as soon as we came in the restaurant.

Really unkind people. We were going to have lunch here but as a lady from hours of travelling, I desperately needed to use the bathroom first. When I came out a man called me over and told me off for using it without permission, and I tried to explain we were going to get something after, he said “No you weren’t.” I insistent again and he said “no you’re not as your companion is still waiting for you by the door”. My companion was only waiting for me so we could decided where we are going to sit or if we only wanted to get a takeaway drink but because of his tone and attitude, we decided not to argue and take our leave. It was very hostile and rude people that need to give people some grace for doing very human things, I would’ve been happy to apologise if he wasn’t soo condescending and was a nicer person overall. Theres a lot of comments about being unwelcoming towards non-white people so maybe this is the case as I’m a British- Asian.

I went here for brunch to take a break before visiting Zansers Hans. I heard Zansers Hans is famous for its mustard, so I ordered the mustard soup and bitterballen, which I hadn't tried before. It was a novel experience to eat while looking at the windmill right in front, and the food was delicious. The bitterballen itself is a bit salty, making it the perfect beer snack.

Café de Slager — Wonderful Food and Even More Wonderful People We had lunch at Café de Slager, and everything about the experience was lovely — the food was clean, fresh, and delicious, and the atmosphere was warm and welcoming. But what truly set this café apart was not just the meal, but the people behind it. The night before our lunch, we actually came by the café late at night, around 11 PM, in the rain, when we were having trouble checking in to a nearby hotel. Even though the café had already closed, all the staff — who were clearly on their break — stood up and kindly offered to help in every way they could. They offered us food and drinks, tried calling the hotel on our behalf, and used their Dutch mobile phones to help us communicate since we didn’t have one. We didn’t get the names of those kind-hearted people, but we especially want to thank the lady in orange, who we were told is the owner’s wife. Her warmth and generosity turned what could have been a stressful night into a moment of comfort and humanity. We returned the next day for lunch, and everything was perfect — the food, the service, and the atmosphere. Good people deserve good things, and Café de Slager is full of them. For anyone reading this, you deserve good food and great service — and you’ll find both here. To all the amazing café staff: you deserve 10 stars!

We had a wonderful experience here! The food was absolutely delicious, especially the Confit Duck Leg. My daughter accidentally dropped her chocolate drink, and the server kindly cleaned it up and even brought her a new one. Such thoughtful service made our meal even more enjoyable!

The place is cute and very welcoming, with a Northern European mountain feel. However, the food is subpar and poorly cooked. We asked for a cheese platter and got a huge platter with lots of decorative chains and fried things, and literally four little pieces of cheese. It also said it was served with ham, and we got smoked salmon, but that was fine. We had the green pepper beef, but it was so tough to chew, served with lettuce and onions... The only good thing was the wine, as they have a fairly wide selection. The service is very friendly; the girls who served us were super helpful and nice. Overall, they should improve the quality of the food.

Beautiful building, great atmosphere, and no fuss. A lovely, relaxed meal with a good glass of wine. The prawns were excellent. I'll definitely be back.

The food was very good, although some portions were a bit small depending on the dish chosen (I also rate it based on the price). The vegan lasagna was delicious. Congratulations! I think they need to improve the waiting time. In our case, it took 40 minutes to serve us, which is why I gave it a low rating. The person who served us was very friendly, which makes up for it. Fortunately, the food was very good.

The three of us went out for dinner, but it was a disappointment. We waited far too long, were given tough meat, and even the wrong wine. The waitress was snappy, and the owner stood angrily behind the bar. The whole experience left a bad taste in our mouths. Literally and figuratively.

Excellent food, good wine and good atmosphere

I chose a burger from the lunch menu. The burger was a regular handmade burger, with a unique color for the bun. The beer was a special edition, something called orange, but I can't remember the exact name. Judging by the wait that started after I went in, I think it's best to go before 12:30 on weekends. It seems like after 12:30, there's a sudden surge of people heading back to Amsterdam for lunch. The taste exceeded my expectations.

We were disappointed by the welcome. Two waitresses received us in a rather nonchalant way, without a smile or real attention. At first, we were told we could only sit around the bar. When we asked if we could sit outside, they said yes, but didn’t even offer to clean the table or the chairs, which were still a bit wet. This creates a poor first impression and does not make us want to return, despite the interest we might have had in the restaurant.

It took almost 40 minutes to serve the food. The quality of the food was very mediocre. Disappointing. The portions were small, and we were left hungry. Not recommended at all.

I am extremely satisfied with this place. The bartender woman was so patient, kind and proffesional, the food was really great (especialle the croquettes and the salmon tartar). Also the strawberry cake is delicious. The restaurant offers a calm and cozy shelter for a rainy day. Totally recommended.

The restaurant is absolutely beautiful, with a warm and inviting atmosphere. I ordered a burger for my kids, and to my surprise, they loved it so much that they finished every bite—something that almost never happens! The other dishes we tried were equally delicious, and the presentation was simply gorgeous. A wonderful dining experience from start to finish!

Did look forward to a great pepper steak with fries and wine. The service before eating was fine. No probs. Asked for a rare steak and had a well done small small piece of meat. Fries was lefties from til plastic bag and not eatable. Asked for new ones and it was a little better. Did tell staff that fries were not good but I don’t think they understood. Don’t do steaks if you don’t know how to.

What a beautiful idyllic location. Very nicely laid out and decorated, pure old Dutch glory. We immediately felt welcome in the Zaanstreek towards the Zaanse Schans. That was certainly enjoyable on the terrace. They have an extensive menu for lunch and the cappuccino/coffee were very tasty. This allowed us to recharge from our long journey in a very pleasant way. The service was friendly and attentive, they also deserve a big compliment. We would like to come back again on a next visit to this region.

We are tourists and wanted to have dinner at the restaurant. There were still many empty tables inside and outside but we were refused even though there were only 2 adults and 1 child. They said tables were all booked but i believe that was a big lie because it was almost 7pm on a normal wednesday and the restaurant was not really crowded. They don't even deserve 1 star

This place definitely discriminates non-white people. We walk in to the place for dinner on a Tuesday and they have plenty of space, but they say they don't have space for us while they serve all white customers. Not recommend for any non-white travellers!

I tried bitterballen elsewhere and thought it was bad.. The best food I ate in the Netherlands.. It goes so well with beer. You should definitely try BEER TASTING..

Nice place, just off the main tourist route leading to the windmills. Nice English speaking staff. Pleasant sitting outside, even for larger groups of 4-6 people. The food was perfectly fine.

We had a great time! The welcome and service were attentive, the atmosphere welcoming and authentic. But above all, the food was incredibly good. The “Chef’s Mystery” menu has some nice surprises in store for you. In addition, the wines offered are of very good quality! A very, very good time!

Thank you again for this delicious meal! We are two French epicureans! We took the chef's 5-course surprise menu and tasted, surprise after surprise, intelligently thought-out dishes, traditional French recipes with identifiable local notes that go together perfectly! The wine pairings were perfect, meeting our expectations and allowing us to travel, an exceptional Rioja and a Californian chardonnay which was a powerful discovery. This menu ended with a revisited strawberry tart, my favorite dessert! We couldn't hope for better to spend an exceptional evening in an authentic and warm setting with attentive staff! Many thanks again, we can’t wait to come back!

The ladies who served me were very nice and gave an excellent recommendation of confit duck leg. The dish was excellent. I came in about 5:45 and was seated immediately. I would definitely come here again.

We visited this place in begining of April. Insite there was free tabels but it have been told to us that all is booke. Tharofore we sit outside. We order6 fries, 6 tees and 3 other bites. We just recived fries, tees and one meal. After 30 minutes waiting we decided to cancel the rest and asked for bill. We was very surpriesed that there was all meals on the bill. The staff tried to convince that we recieved all. After unpolite argumentation he was willing to removed one meal from the bill. We was tired to continue to figt therfore in the end we stil have to pay for what we didnt get. This is very unprofesional. We highly do not recomend to go here mainly because of one realy arogant employee.

The chicken was raw, that for chicken meat 70c core temperature. For older people that can be dangerous. Complaint was not done. Parking is a drama there Service just walks around in their daily clothes and was catty. Short, conclusion: disappointed

We had avocado toast and local soup—it was absolutely delicious! We had never tried the soup before, and we really enjoyed it. We had a wonderful lunch here, and I hope we can visit again.

Great spot to go after walking around the mills. I went with my parents who have dietary restrictions and it was easy to accommodate. We ordered the croquettes, burrata salad and the burgers. There was a misunderstanding when I ordered another dish because I don't speak Dutch nor much English (mustard soup with smoked salmon, which I cancelled) and after reading the reviews I regret not ordering it! After lunch we ordered coffee and I was hopeful to have apple pie but they didn't have this time. Everything was delicious, and I loved the detail of the cookie with the coffee. Amazing service and beautiful space. I'll come back.

Came here for my Opa’s 90th birthday supper. English menu wasn’t translated properly, and lacked a lot of details in both the English and Dutch versions of the menu (like a beef option not specifying it had mushrooms in it). My main course, the pumpkin ravioli, was good but the duck my grandparents and mother got were not what it specified on the menu (it was a tiny leg piece with barely any meat instead of the breast it was supposed to be) and was also too salty. The appetizer I got was the burrata salad which needed much more balsamic vinegar and was also too salty. The staff were nice but most seemed inexperienced and one waitress seemed to have to take over the other tables. The managers need to do more training for them. The place itself was nice and historical, although the steps to get into the place need to be fixed as they’re a tripping hazard for my elderly grandparents.

Had a lovely lunch at the Butcher yesterday. The steak tartare is DELICIOUS!!!! So fresh it melts on your tongue :-) It was a very busy Saturday and I think it was the girl Miete or something :-/ But my compliments on how she did all this on her own. This is actually impossible to do alone and she did a FANTASTIC job!!! You can hold your hands with such a winner. I hope someone will join us on Saturday because it would be such a shame to let someone do this all alone. Nice tent, delicious food (also compliments to the kitchen brigade by the way) and nice atmosphere, we will come again soon!

This was delicious - one of the better meals we had in the Netherlands. We ordered the steak & ravioli. The steak was cooked perfectly, and the ravioli was packed with flavour. The owner made us feel very welcome. Would highly recommend if you’re checking out the windmills to pop in here for lunch.

We had lunch with surprisingly tasty dishes. Super sweet service and top location

Ate here last Wednesday. What a disappointment. Upon entering there were two groups having drinks, which made it very noisy. We were seated next to the door, so it wasn't cozy. Every 5 minutes someone would go outside to smoke or people would come in and then leave again. The starter steak tartare seemed fine at first glance, but unfortunately the chunks were too coarsely cut and seasoned too salty, as was the garlic toast that came with it. The deer steak was cooked well medium rare as ordered. Quite sparse in terms of vegetables, only 1 carrot. The bavette was way overcooked and we sent it back. First the plate was taken away, only to be told that it would take a while before I got a new one due to traffic. More than half an hour later I received the new bavette, with fries, fried bacon, onion and mushrooms. Unfortunately no vegetables as stated on the menu. I ate the bavette but it tasted different, it was very tearful. After the main course we left. As compensation, 1 drink was removed from the bill. The staff paid more attention to each other than to the guests. And had a nice drink behind the bar. The price-quality ratio is out of proportion, we only spent €100 for a starter and main course for 2 people and there were hardly any vegetables or salad.

Very good restaurant! Good service, yes a little slow, but normal. We arrived on a Tuesday at 1:15 p.m. and it was almost empty, very nice. Good Dutch decoration and a complete menu for all tastes. The dishes were homey, simple but very tasty food! The only negative thing was the prices, a little expensive but I think it's worth it

That was delicious! I have always been disappointed when I have eaten out in the Netherlands. Here's the big exception, I've rarely eaten such a delicious piece of meat and the rest was just as good. 👍👍👍 And all of this in a beautiful atmosphere.

Visited 10/21/24. Best fish and chips hands down over Amsterdam. Quaint spot with varied menu. Personable host and efficient and friendly wait staff. Really enjoyed the meal and ability to relax and regroup after a long day of walking.

Rude staff, restaurant was completely empty and they refused us service cause it was allegedly fully booked. Perhaps they don’t want customers from different nationalities.

We had lunch at the “Schlachter”. The only friendly service had a good time with the coffee guests. Things were clearly progressing since we took our order. The drinks came quickly and we could watch the experienced chef through the large hatch. The lasagna and prawns were professionally prepared and tasted very good. De Slagter is an excellent place to stop for a break on the way between the train station and the open-air museum.

Charming restaurant that celebrates its history as an old butcher’s shop. Warm ambiance and friendly service. The restaurant smells wonderful and it’s good to see the working kitchen when dining. Food was very good, menu interesting. The cheese board was a stand out. It was interesting to read a previous review of racial profiling. The day before we ate here, we visited close to dinner time for drinks only and were served reluctantly at the bar. This is a tiny restaurant with limited covers so understandable they turn people away sometimes. We saw many different ethnicities being welcomed on the night we dined.

Good location for food near the attractions and station. The lady server did a good job. The burrata was very hard though, but wasn’t cold, it was weird. Fix it.

I visited this restaurant over three months ago, and while the food was excellent, what truly made the experience unforgettable was the stunning waiter. Even after all this time, I find myself thinking about her beauty, which left me speechless. Her presence and charm elevated the dining experience to a whole new level. The food was good, but her indescribable beauty is what really blew my mind. I’ll definitely be back, though I doubt I’ll ever forget that visit!

Late Sunday afternoon, Zaanse Schans restaurants close six to seven times a day when tourists have left. I didn't realize it because it was my first day here. I had a recommended draft beer and French fries at this open cafe. There were a lot of French fries, but they were so delicious that I ordered another beer and ate them all. I'm sure the other side dishes would have been delicious as well. I think I will go again while I stay here.
