Cantina Mexicana in Centrum

We've been coming here for years; it's always a treat for us to pop in and enjoy our favorite dishes. Although we heard it's changed ownership, the quality of the food remains the same; very good. The spareribs, nachos pequenos, and the combinacion cantina mexicana are especially recommended.

The food is shameful, vegetarian Burrito is impossible.

Tonight I ate at Cantina Mexicana again after a long time, but unfortunately, it was disappointing. Both the tomato soup and the fajitas (chicken and beef) were bland. The portions were considerably smaller than in previous years, while the prices seem to have gone up. It's a shame, because I always had high regard for this place. The price-quality ratio is unfortunately not what it used to be. I sincerely hope this improves in the future. The service was excellent, but the interior is and always has been a bit dark. This makes reading the menu a bit difficult. The staff was friendly and attentive.

When we sat down at the table, the table was wiped down with a cloth (unfortunately, it didn't make it any cleaner; it was still very sticky). The walls and decorations were very dusty, not very appetizing to look at when eating. We received our main course, and no cutlery was brought with it; we had to ask for it ourselves. We then received cutlery, but it was dirty. After pointing out that the cutlery was dirty, we did receive clean cutlery. The main course was served in a very chaotic manner; it looked like a "kapsalon" on a plate, as if we were eating at a doner kebab shop. We ordered a crispy tortilla, but it was more of a soggy snack. We thought the main course was a bit overpriced; we could have gotten it cheaper at a doner kebab shop. One of us also had a mushroom in our meal, which wasn't part of the main course. We were kindly welcomed by the staff and were very prompt.

They took more than an hour to bring us our food, waiters were kind and the restaurant looked good but the food was very very tasteless and actually made one of us feel ill afterwards. Tacos were broken and wet. Clearly not true mexican food at all and excessively expensive. Just completely tasteless.

Food was pretty good, but pricey. Atmosphere was pretty nice. My Mexican friend looked at the menu and said that the dishes were not authentic. Also seemed very surprised that for certain things you need to pay extra while they should be part of the dish. I'm no expert, it seemed ok, but I expected more for this price.

Food came straight from the freezer and you couldn't call it Mexican.

It is a great restaurant! Delicious food and good service! Really recommended! We will definitely come back here!

Magical Mexican wonder restaurant, with a very cozy decor

We shared a Plato Mixto with an extra side dish rice. I really liked the meat, very well made. Especially the ribs were good! The meat fell of the bones really easy! It is a but on the expensive side for students but I still highly recommend it! Great staff with great service! And nice seating areas!

Abhorrent. This was the worst food I have had the displeasure of eating in Groningen. The 'guacamole' didn't seem to have any avocado in it and the nachos were sweet and soft. No spice or flavour was present. Horrific stuff. I would suggest this place is avoided. It also took ages to be seated and served (despite not being busy) and I received the incorrect items.

So you have to wait a long time for your food, but once you get it, it's delicious. We did the social deal, we will definitely come again. The menu had many delicious dishes.

Very tasty food. Nice surroundings and cozy atmosphere. Service also very nice. Even though we had to beckon a lot, they don't come to your table easily. The food is filling and definitely worth it, the chocolate cake is super tasty!! The sangria is also recommended.

Amazing I loved every bit of it! I definitely recommend ! The food was delicious and their drinks amazing! The service was amazing and it was done very quickly! The food was so yummy and it was definitely worth the price, they had many places open and I don't understand how it isn't even so crowded, this restaurant is definitely underrated, if I could give 6 stars I would!

"This Mexican restaurant is a real gem! From the entrance, the festive and colorful atmosphere transports us directly to Mexico. The dishes are prepared with care and authenticity: the tacos are garnished with marinated meats (or equally tasty vegetarian options), the guacamoles are freshly prepared at the table, and the enchiladas are just perfect, with a homemade sauce that explodes with flavors. I particularly loved their margaritas, prepared with fresh ingredients and a balance perfect between sweet and tangy. The portions are generous, and the prices are very reasonable for the quality offered. The service is fast and the staff is always smiling and ready to explain the dishes for those new to Mexican cuisine. In short, an address to recommend without hesitation for a friendly and exotic meal!

Poor hygiene in the entire restaurant. Diarrhea the next day. Mediocre nachos. Loud music.

We waren gisteren wezen eten bij Cantina Mexicana. We werden vriendelijk ontvangen en gingen met ons twee aan een tafel voor 4 zitten maar werden weggestuurd naar een hoekje met een tafel voor twee. Mijn vriend had de boekenkast als uitzicht en ik een muur met een beklad schilderij waar ook nog eens een tekening op geplakt was ipv dat we tegenover elkaar konden zitten. Het duurde vrij lang voordat we een drankje hadden. Maar het ergste was het eten. Het was niet lekker. Alleen het voorgerecht was prima maar het hoofdgerecht was echt slecht. Hoofdgerecht was varkenshaas maar dat was helaas te droog op bepaalde punten, niet gekruid en alles behalve mexicaans. De patatjes waren ook helaas niet gaar. Mijn vriend at ook nog eens van een beschadigd bord. We hebben het nagerecht/ koffie overgeslagen. Bij het afrekenen hoefden we het voorgerecht niet te betalen wegens onze slechte ervaring maar wij komen hier niet weer.

Ate there with social deal. Unfortunately we got a menu with a few dishes. You could not choose the starter, it was 1 starter. Main course rice with beans and a lot of nachos with a little melted cheese. Desert ice cream, ice cream or cake. In short, not to repeat.

Delicious food, only the main course had too little chicken fillet. Furthermore, attentive service, that's a nice plus.

Atmosphere is equal to snow valley. But the quality of the food is really bad. Simple and rushed. Think I got maybe 100g dry chicken with my 3 mini wraps. Well 22.50. Lettuce not dressed. Tomatoes not ripe, white onion in large pieces on the food. Our vegan table companion got normal, non-vegan cheese and sour cream. Clearly indicated.

Friendly staff, but the food is a very sad affair. The idea behind the group "menu" is ridiculous. A wrap that is fried too crispy to share with 5 people, fajitas with only wraps for half the table... Mealy tomato cubes with lettuce with a sour green dip that pretends to be Guacamole.. I also have the idea that there are few herbs and seasonings to be found in the kitchen. What exactly is the idea behind this (other than cost saving)?

The atmosphere was amazing, but after a long wait we got our food which was very bland and lacking texture. No salsa on the tacos and basically unseasoned chicken. Very disappointing. I went there with four other students and we wanted to split the bill, but they wouldn’t let us pay for what we had so we had to split evenly! I couldn’t believe it.

Unfortunately, the food this time was downright bad where it is normally a great place to eat out.

Fun with the group, well-priced food

The food was decent, not great. But the mouse running around the floor seemed to like it. (The staff didn’t seem to care, let alone apologise – despite the staff member who climbed up on a chair.)

Tried spareribs in many different places at home and abroad. In my opinion, Cantina Mexicana still has the tastiest one so far. To be honest, I've never ordered anything other than spareribs here.

Delicious food in an attractive restaurant and friendly service

Erg lekker gegeten in een fijne sfeer. Zeer aardig personeel. Wij waren met 5 meiden en gingen voor een 3 gangen menu. Veel keuze en alles was erg goed van smaak. Echt een aanrader!

Very nice restaurant on the fish market in Groningen. The service was nice, the atmosphere was cozy and the food was delicious!

The nooks and crannies make this a nice intimate place. New and very clean toilets. Friendly staff.

Went in the hope of getting some genuine Mexican flavours, but hope was not enough. Ingredients did not feel particularly fresh, but even more noticeable was the lack of any flavours: No Lime, coriander, chillies, or other spices for that mater. Quanta was no issue, so if you’re willing to eat; you would be fed… Service was decent enough. Children’s play room was a nice idea, but very shabby, holes in the walls and the general feeling of never being cleaned, not to mention the staff changing room entrance (you could see into the room) in the same place. The venue otherwise went for run down Mexican look, was very dark, cramped and noisy. Only upside was the knowledge that I will never go again.

The food was terribly bad, the taco was disgustingly soggy and served with stale rice and dry beans. The portion was tiny for 18€! Warning to all citizens: this is absolute tourist camera! Don't eat here, I've never seen such bad tacos (taco, it was only one...)

Let me start with the positive first, the food was very good. Due to the negative experience of us and other couples, it actually deserves 0 stars. The table was moved twice, and the last table was really bored by other customers who constantly nudged us because it was cramped. several couples were moved, with 1 couple having to wait 2 hours for food. as they forgot the order. (by moving) Once again the food was good, but the entire negative experience remains. Because of this we will not be returning anytime soon.

I don't get why so many of the reviews are positive. The food is mediocre at best. The enchiladas are dry with no sauce and the chimichangas were cold but tasted decent. However, this coupled with the insane prices (19 for chimis??) makes this a 2-star review and a not-so-great place to eat.

Grabbed a social deal last minute. Starter, main and dessert excellent. Spare ribs very tasty, also enough. Children's dish Beef (not very tender, chew for a long time) It was not busy, all dishes were served quickly one after the other. Restaurant is larger than it looks from the outside. Cozy decorated. (Some dust collection here and there). €7.20 for 0.5L wheat beer, which is fairly priced. All in all a nice meal.

Very nicely decorated restaurant and the owner makes you feel welcome with a healthy dose of humor. The food is tasty, including delicious tortillas. I recommend ordering Mexican because I didn't think the spare ribs were special (although the marinade was tasty). I will definitely come back to try other menu options!

Service was friendly, but it took 20+ minutes each time for the drinks to arrive. The food was tasty but very little, especially the size of the burrito. Afterwards we were still hungry…

Been eating there for years. At the Vismarkt, inside because the market was being hosed down. And the stalls cleaned up, etc. Nice spot on the terrace. Food was so tasty! Sufficient (large oval plate) and very tasty. Yes, but only minced beef is on the menu, although pullen park is also an option. Also vegetarian, I thought. Nice tent and decoration. The man at the entrance too, the one on the right...

Food was good and tasty, and the personnel was friendly. Prices are okay, but not cheap and the food took quite a long time to serve.

Had dinner here with family yesterday, delicious!! Nice service. The only point of criticism is that it is a bit cold, but that doesn't detract from how delicious it was, with the dessert platter being the highlight!

It was very pleasant and the service was attentive, but the food was disappointing. Guacamole was not fresh/homemade (more sour cream than avocado?), tortilla chips from the supermercado and the 'guajillo sauce' was strangely sweet stuff. There are entire cookbooks with vegetarian Mexican recipes, but apparently people here come up with the idea that almost all vegetarian dishes require Roquefort sauce??

Went for dinner with a group of friends. Food itself was delicious, for most of us. 1 of us ordered a meal for 500gr. but that was maybe half of it. This person also had to ask for his fries 2/3 times before they finally came. Furthermore, 2 of us sat in a corner (in the back) above which moisture was dripping from the pipes. This is really not done. Finally, the service also had difficulty remembering the correct order for the coffee.

Nice people, nice location only the food is not "fantastic" The tenderloin tips (pork tenderloin) were anything but tender, otherwise we had a great evening.

Generous menu, delicious food. Hospitably received. It is a long, narrow place, which also makes it special. The colored plastic tablecloths are a matter of taste. I thought it was very busy and a bit messy. Quite nice though. As long as they are whole. And that wasn't the cloth I was sitting on. One round out and I find that unhygienic. But I will definitely come back, the menu is inviting to taste more.

What a bad food shed! Price/quality completely out of proportion. Has nothing to do with tasty Mexican. Bad operation. Substandard portions. + point for the service! When paying, half of the bill was taken out when the complaints were ventilated. Never again unfortunately.

Nice place! The enchilada had beef which was tasty, but the one with pulled pork at the competitor is slightly tastier. For the rest it is nicely decorated, although a bit messy here and there, for example the tablecloth would be nicer in burgundy red instead of the cheaper looking plastic with pictures (just a tip)

Gezellige sfeer hangt er in het restaurant. Vriendelijke bediening en gezelligheid ook. Heb er met een groep er gegeten maar ik had het idee dat de kaart om uit te kiezen dan kleiner is dan het menu op hun website staat. In ieder geval heel erg lekker gegeten. Drinken werd ook voldoende aangevuld. Spareribs zijn een aanrader !!

Leuk Mexicaans restaurantje aan de vismarkt hartje centrum Groningen. Bediening was vriendelijk, behulpzaam en gastvrij. Het eten was lekker en van goede kwaliteit (ze hebben een mooie grote uitgebreide kaart). Minpuntje vond ik mijn tafeltje tegenover de bar aan het gangpad (pand is vrij nauw en krap). Ook zat mijn stoel niet heel comfortabel. Prijzen zijn prima voor hetgeen je krijgt. Als je niet voor fancy of chic gaat is dit restaurant een prima keuze (voor de allerkleinste kinderen hebben ze ook nog een leuke speelplaats in de kelder).

was leuk, lepel was vies, vlees te gaar, eten zonder bestekset en voorgerecht was vergeten! Bij afrekenen roepen ze elkaar... jasper Jasper... Kortom.... Slordige boel.

Heerlijke sparebis en nacho's gegeten. Gezellig restaurant. Ze hebben een speelruimte voor de kinderen voor de ruimte van de toiletten. Hierdoor apenkooiend naar het toilet. Ook klonk dit erg door in het restaurant. Verder vriendelijk personeel, en goed eten.

Leckere mexikanische Küche mit gehobenen Preisen, im Sommer auf der Terrasse sicherlich ein Highlight, drinnen etwas abgewohnt, gehört sicher zum typischen Charme.. Wer mexikanisch liebt, kommt hier auf seine Kosten...

This place connected me directly to Latin America again after some weeks on europe. The food is just AMAZING, simple, full of flavors, worth each coin. If you're Latin, you need to taste it. The staff is amazing as well!!!

We were a little early for our reservation and it was no problem for us to wait at the bar and enjoy a drink. We were looked after really well, nothing was a problem. Our table became available right on time. The meals were delicious and very generously portioned. Excellent burrito, chicken wings and quesadia. A very nice maragrita. The team was super friendly and very professional. Top marks!

It's a really cozy (Tex-)Mex spot with friendly staff and an extensive menu. Their cocktails are worthwhile as well. Service tends to be a bit slow, so be prepared to spend an hour or two or three there during busy hours.

In comparison to what Cantina used to serve, the food portions shrunk considerably in size, while the price has steeply risen. The portion is more suitable for lunch than for dinner. Taste is still good, but it's not what it used to be.

Super lekker gegeten en niet duur. Met z'n tweeën waren we iets meer dan 50 euro kwijt. Het is binnen wel een beetje donker maar dat heeft ook wel weer een gezellige sfeer. Helaas was het dakterras niet open, anders waren we daar gaan zitten.

Goed eten. Jammer dat er geen mezcal is. Mooi restaurant. Dakterras gesloten omdat er teveel wind stond. Het waaide echter nauwelijks

Weer heerlijk gegeten. Klein minpuntje was dat we nog bezig waren met het voorgerecht en het hoofdgerecht al werd geserveerd. Verder heerlijk gegeten zoals altijd.

Leuk restaurant met een diverse, uitbundige en leuke aankleding! Eten was erg lekker. Iedereen had een ander gerecht, welke stuk voor stuk lekker waren. Personeel vriendelijk. Al met al een prima ervaring en aan te bevelen. Was het dichter bij huis, zou ik sowieso terugkomen.

Goed en gezellig restaurant met lekker eten. Vooral de chorizo worstjes vooraf is een aanrader. Helaas is de keuken cq. het eten niet te vergelijken met zoals je het eten in Mexico zelf krijgt, maar dat is mede door de goede, vlotte, enthousiaste bediening vergeven ...

We hebben er ontzettend lekker gegeten. Personeel was zeer vriendelijk en gastvrij. Er was een speelruimte voor ons kindje waardoor het ook een heel kindvriendelijke plek was. Een echte aanrader voor gezinnen met kinderen!

Erg slechte bediening. Niet 1x vragen of ik nog iets te drinken wou of dat alles naar wens is. Moest de hele tijd naar hun als ik wilde bestellen Lijkt me niet de bedoeling van een restaurant. Muziek stond ook erg luid waarbij een fatsoenlijk gesprek bijna niet mogelijk was. Nu zaten wij ook recht onder de muziek box.

Cantina Mexicana is niet Mexicaans. Het is gewoon lekker eten in "Mexicaanse" stijl. De witte sangria is veel te zoet, zit geen wijnsmaak aan. De gerechten zijn volgens mij allemaal bereid met ingrediënten van de Albert Heijn om de hoek, maar het smaakt allemaal prima. Helaas ook krimpflatie geconstateerd in de porties hier: vroeger waren de enchiladas veel groter. Het smaakt allemaal prima maar het is absoluut niet bijzonder of hoogstaand. Gewoon lekker eten. Het dakterras zit heerlijk in de zon en het personeel is vriendelijk en goed, dus je kunt er prima vertoeven. Vroeger was het wel een stuk drukker op zaterdagavond. Hopelijk zitten ze niet in zwaar weer. We komen nog wel eens weer, maar we weten waarvoor we komen. Niks bijzonders, gewoon lekker, prima eten in "Mexicaanse" stijl.
