I had a fabulous 5 course dinner with beer and port pairing. Utterly delicious and I’ll be back next year.

Super food, nice atmosphere and nice service. Recommended, we were there for our company Christmas dinner.

Delicious food. Great concept with a surprise menu. Delicious dishes that are coordinated, with tasty snacks between some courses. Matching wines, beers or non-alcoholic drinks can be ordered for all rounds. The staff creates a pleasant atmosphere. All in all a wonderful evening out.

Verrassend lekkere gerechten met heerlijke goed gekozen combinatie van smaken. En uiteraard prachtige bijpassende wijnen. De bediening is erg enthousiast. Het restaurant smaakvol ingericht. Kortom, een echte aanrader om je een avond culinair lekker te laten verwennen.

Wat een fijne avond hadden we bij Betere Tijden. De bediening is zo attent en leuk, de gerechten zijn enorm verrassend en goed op elkaar afgestemd. Een bijpassend sap arrangement voor iemand die geen alcohol drinkt: wat een uitvinding. De inrichting is heel gezellig. Akoestisch nog wel wat te verbeteren, je kunt de buren en achterburen letterlijk verstaan en de geluiden zijn best hard. Wat zacht materiaal onder de tafels en een paar grote gordijnen aan de straatzijde en dat is ook opgelost. Dan gaat het van een 9,5 naar een 10 :-)

What a nice place to eat. Driven employees who all do their best in their own way to make it a pleasant evening. Excellent knowledge of wine and food. Tasty dishes and matching drinks made this a successful evening. Thanks for this. The last missing star on atmosphere is a personal feeling. I thought the decor fell short of the warm feeling the people there give you.

The best meal I've had in a restaurant in the Netherlands in a long time. We enjoyed the five-course surprise menu with corresponding wines and were completely thrilled. The friendly service and the moderate bill rounded off a perfect, enjoyable evening. Absolutely recommended. And reserve in advance!

Wij hebben heerlijk gedineerd met z’n vieren. De gerechten zowel de vlees als de vega zijn met aandacht en creativiteit bereidt. Er ontbreekt alleen de optie om alcoholvrij feestelijk mee te proosten. Geen alcoholvrije wijn, cava of cocktail, niet meer van deze tijden. Hopelijk komen er betere tijden ;-) voor de alcoholvrije gasten

At this restaurant you are presented with a culinary adventure, you decide whether it is 3, 4 or 5 courses and whether you want a wine or beer arrangement. The quality is high and I really enjoyed all the delicious flavor combinations that were presented to me. Something went wrong with the service and the person who tasted the wine forgot to finally fill the glass. Location is excellent and the decor is contemporary. I thought the prices were very reasonable for the high quality delivered. Highly recommended for a top-quality culinary adventure.

An upgrade, situated in the heart of Groningen. The food is an explosion of flavors, and you're served by the nicest people in town. In addition, a collection of wine that would leave you thirsting for more. It is surely recommended.

Update after two years (July 2024). Still a wonderful place to dine. We have been to the Better Times several times and it remains surprising and tasteful. In the run-up to our reservation, I had (email) contact a number of times regarding: dietary requirements but also in view of the adapted measures, this was very pleasant. We started with a delicious appetizer and then the 4-course surprise menu, in a word: fantastic! The accompanying drinks were also great. Keep going!

I have rarely eaten as well as here. Truly phenomenal. Service top! Food great! Flavor explosions. Atmosphere great! Super concept. Recommended!

Excellent food with good value for money and nice atmosphere

Was here with friends. The SURPRISE MENU (5 courses) really surprised us from start to finish. Never experienced such taste explosions. The cheese platter was served with appropriate ports for each type of cheese. Everything is great!!! Thanks to the chefs. Best service ever. Always my pleasure.

Truly one of the best restaurants in Groningen, if not the best. Top dishes with interesting flavors, but also texture! The beer pairing was also very well chosen!

Due to the high opinion, we decided to eat at this restaurant, we were there yesterday, unfortunately we were informed by the waiter that the kitchen was closing soon and to come back next time. We went there the next day, at a much earlier time, unfortunately, even though the restaurant was 60% empty, we were informed that we would not eat there without a reservation. It's a pity that on the previous day we were not informed that we needed to make a table reservation. We felt so bad that unfortunately we will not try to eat at this place for the third time. Unfortunately, the owner's answer was telling, not everyone spends hours in a restaurant drinking only drinks, often an hour is enough to eat a meal. Everything would be ok if there was proper staff communication.

We are often disappointed in a gourmet restaurant because the cooks try to invent beautiful combinations, with very beautiful presentations but often forget the taste... we do not easily separate the flavors and in the mouth everything is not really good... this is not the case here... the surprise menu is above all a surprise of tastes on a perfect presentation... the food and wine pairing and also a great discovery... a big thank you to chefs like that... what a joy to find you by chance on the routes of our travels... surprising and unexpected certainly but a great pleasure in the mouth 😘

Wonderful place to dine. Choose from a 3,4 or 5 course menu! Each one is made to a high quality. Friendly staff If you prefer not to drink wine, there is also a choice of matching beer or juice! Selected a restaurant with the highest rating on Google Maps. 4.8 out of 5. I don't know where the 0.2 was missed, but a big 5 stars from us. Service was good, explanation was good, the food was delicious. And we were blown away by the bill, which was very reasonable for the tasty dishes. It was a big party for my taste buds.

Absolutely incredible dining experience! We tried the 5 course menu and every dish was exceptional. We particularly enjoyed hearing an explanation of each dish and thought that really elevated the dining experience. Service and ambiance were both perfect - this is a wonderful spot for a nice, romantic dinner. The price was also very fair, in my opinion, for the quality of the food you receive. We will definitely be back again in the future to try another surprise fixed menu!

We had a fantastic evening here and had a delicious vegetarian meal (5 courses). It was very easy to register this in advance and you knew straight away. The food is delicious, the service is outstanding. Matching wine for every course. Certainly a bit expensive, but just right for a special, memorable evening.

As a vegetarian you are not in the right place here. Starter was very tasty. Main course a hodgepodge of flavors. Wine arrangement a bit sparse. It seems very thoughtful, I will give you something extra, but you will be charged a lot. Non alcoholic arrangement was very special.

Sound concept. The aim is to enjoy good food. This is not possible without the high quality of the processed local products, and higher, inspired cookery combined with a prudent selection of beverages (also non-alcoholic) in a pleasently relaxed setting at two sites in Groningen. We had a wonderful surprise dinner (with allergies well considered).

Friendly staff who will explain the dishes and explain the wine. From where we sat you could see straight into the kitchen. Small restaurant with an intimate atmosphere. One dish was tastier and more interesting than the other, but that is of course partly personal preference. In particular, we enjoyed the meat dish the most, the fish dish less. Everything is homemade and you can taste it. Highly recommended.

De Betere Tijden is the best restaurant in Groningen! Went here for the second time last Saturday and the food was great again! The staff was super friendly. The cook also came by the table to ask if everything was to your liking. If you don't eat meat or fish, you get a vegetarian variant that is also super tasty and you really don't miss the meat. It is definitely recommended to take a matching wine arrangement, just like the cheese board (which comes with delicious glasses of port). I was enjoying it so much that I forgot to take pictures ;)

Tonight we had a delicious five-course dinner with 8 people! Delicious food, also for the vegetarians and vegans among us! There was nothing to complain about in the corridors and we were amazed by everything, it was great! Thanks to Roel, Gijs, Kasper, Lennard & Nick! Well done! The homemade bread was also PERFECT, we will be talking about it for years to come!

Had a fantastic evening at this great restaurant. All dietary requirements communicated were taken into account. Instead of fish we got vegetarian dishes. Choice of 3, 4 or 5 courses (5 courses means 4 courses + cheese). The food is beautifully plated and all the flavors are superb. They have matching wines, beers and juices for everything. The staff is friendly, down-to-earth, not exaggerated as in other restaurants in this segment, and knowledgeable. The restaurant is small, feels like a living room. This was the first but certainly not the last time!

Nice concept and very attentive service. Here they know what good food is. The food is chic but the atmosphere is cozy. In winter I recommend not to sit by the window because of the cold draft at your feet.
